Celtics-Cavaliers Preview

The Boston Celtics continue to slide - and with it, their chances of improving their playoff seeding in the Eastern Conference.

Struggling to adjust in the wake of a significant injury, Boston on Wednesday night visits a Cleveland Cavaliers team that is dealing with its own injury problems and is also mired in a five-game losing streak.

The Celtics (36-34) are only a little more than two weeks removed from a five-game winning streak, but have since gone 2-7 and are a defeat away from matching a season-worst six-game skid from Jan. 16-25. They were in a three-way tie for fifth place in the East on March 16, but are now in seventh, 2 1/2 games back of sixth-place Atlanta.

Tuesday's 100-85 home loss to the Knicks marked their second straight game without Kevin Garnett, who is out with inflammation in his left ankle and a return date is uncertain. Courtney Lee also missed his second game in a row because of a sprained left ankle, with Jordan Crawford starting and scoring 14 points.

Although Garnett is the team's leading rebounder (7.8 rpg) and second-leading scorer (14.9 ppg), coach Doc Rivers doesn't buy his absence as much of an excuse.

"Kevin's not playing. I don't worry about it," Rivers said. "Overall, we were pretty bad. Kevin had nothing to do with that."

Playing without Rajon Rondo, the Celtics have struggled with turnovers, committing an average of 16.8 per game during their skid compared to opponents' 13.2. That could be trouble even against the Cavaliers (22-47), who have the league's third-fewest wins but are averaging a league-low 12.9 turnovers since New Year's Day. Cleveland is also forcing an average of 16.6 turnovers in its last five games.

Boston coughed up 20 turnovers Tuesday leading to 17 points for the Knicks.

"We've got to get back to playing with more energy, forcing a lot of turnovers like we were three or four weeks ago," said Paul Pierce, averaging 20.4 points on 53.0 percent shooting over his last 14 games. "Turning the ball over less if we're going to give ourselves a chance."

After blowing a 27-point lead to Miami last Wednesday, things got even worse for the Cavaliers in a 116-78 loss to Houston on Friday - their largest margin of defeat this season.

"As I told our guys, it was the first game in a long time that I saw us being very disconnected on both ends of the floor," coach Byron Scott said.

Cleveland is being outrebounded by an average of 9.4 during its slide while letting opponents average 108.0 points on 50.6 percent shooting. Friday marked the ninth time in 11 games the Cavaliers were held to less than 100 points.

Kyrie Irving (shoulder) and Dion Waiters (knee) have both been ruled out. Irving, who has missed six straight, may miss the rest of the season, while Waiters is expected to be re-evaluated this week, but he's out indefinitely after missing the last two contests.

For the Celtics, Jeff Green continues to play well since making his first start of the season on Feb. 22, averaging 15.9 points in 16 games.

The teams split two earlier meetings this season, with Pierce notching a season-high 40 points on 13-of-16 shooting in a 103-91 win on Dec. 19. But he struggled in a 95-90 loss in Cleveland on Jan. 22, going 3 of 15 for 12 points with four turnovers. Irving had 40 points in that game.

Green's layup at buzzer lifts Celtics over Cavs

CLEVELAND (AP) The reeling and battered Boston Celtics were seconds away from matching their longest losing streak of the season.

Then Jeff Green saved the day.

Green hit the winning layup at the buzzer and scored 21 points, and the Celtics snapped a five-game losing streak with a 93-92 win over the Cleveland Cavaliers on Wednesday night.

It was obvious Boston, which had lost seven of nine coming in and was again without star forward Kevin Garnett, needed something positive to happen. An uncharacteristic late-season slide had dropped the Celtics to seventh place in the Eastern Conference and it looked as if the skid would continue when Cleveland built an 86-72 lead with just over eight minutes to play.

"It was a huge win," said forward Paul Pierce, who had 19 points and 10 rebounds. "We didn't play well from the second quarter on, but we found a way. It seemed like we were mentally fatigued and physically fatigued, but we put it all together at the end."

Wayne Ellington scored 16 points to lead Cleveland, which has lost six in a row - matching a season high - and 10 of 12.

Pierce hit a jumper with 32 seconds remaining to make it 92-91. Following a miss by Shaun Livingston, the Celtics regained possession and called timeout with 9.2 seconds left. The next play, which began in the backcourt, seemed to set Pierce up for the final shot before Alonzo Gee knocked the ball loose in front of Cleveland's bench with 2.1 seconds remaining.

The Celtics regrouped while a video review confirmed they had possession of the ball. Green took an inbound pass from Avery Bradley near the three-point line, drove into the lane and scored over two defenders as time expired.

"Jeff wanted the ball," Boston coach Doc Rivers said. "He asked for it by the way he was looking at me in the huddle. He clearly wanted the basketball. I sensed that and everybody sensed that."

"(Jason Terry) set a good screen on my man, and Avery made a good pass," Green said. "I just tried to be aggressive and get to the rim. I'm a player."

The Cavaliers were coming off their worst defeat of the season, a 38-point loss at Houston on Friday. Cleveland seemingly had control of the game in the fourth quarter, but lost a battle of teams that have been decimated by injuries.

Boston played without Garnett, who missed his third straight consecutive because of inflammation in his left ankle. Guard Courtney Lee has also missed the last three games of a sprained left ankle.

Cleveland played without All-Star guard Kyrie Irving, who missed his seventh straight game with a bruised left shoulder. Dion Waiters, the Cavaliers' starting shooting guard, was out for the third game in a row with a sore left knee.

It was another frustrating loss for Cleveland coach Byron Scott, whose team was outscored 21-6 with the game on the line.

"We were looking at the clock, playing not to lose the game instead of to win the game," Scott said. "You have to look to win. You can't hope the clock runs out and that's what we kind of did."

Brandon Bass scored a season-high 22 points for the Celtics, who lead eighth-place Milwaukee by 2 1/2 games. Pierce also had eight assists but nearly negated all of them with seven turnovers. Jordan Crawford added 12 points for Boston.

The Cavs trailed by 12 in the second quarter but cut the deficit to 46-45 at halftime. They opened the third quarter on a 17-4 run to take a 62-50 lead before Boston trimmed it to 73-69 early in the fourth. A trio of 3-pointers by Daniel Gibson, C.J. Miles and Luke Walton, along with two baskets by Marreese Speights, stretched the lead to 86-72.

Miles and Speights scored 13 points each for Cleveland.

The first quarter ended in an unusual manner. A basket by the Celtics was waved off because of traveling, forcing the officials to put five-tenths of a second back on the clock after a video review. Speights hit a shot after a length of the court pass from Walton, but the basket was waved off after another video review.

Boston point guard Rajon Rondo (knee surgery) and forward Jared Sullinger (back surgery), along with Cleveland center Anderson Varejao are out for the season. Varejao developed a blood clot in his lung after having surgery to repair a split leg muscle.

NOTES: Rivers thinks Lee will return for Friday's game against Atlanta. ... Rivers moved Green from center to power forward, while Bass started at small forward. C Chris Wilcox made his first start of the season. ... Irving was on the court and in uniform about 90 minutes before the game to shoot a commercial for the NBA. He's been out since March 10, but could return in April. Irving scored 40 points in a 95-90 win in Cleveland on Jan. 22. ... Waiters' status will be re-evaluated this week. ... Walton was given a technical for arguing a traveling call in the second quarter.

THE FACTS: Power forward Jeff Green scored on a driving layup as time expired, giving the Boston Celtics a 93-92 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers. Green took an inbounds pass from point guard Avery Bradley at the top of the arc with 2.1 seconds left, then drove down the right side of the lane before floating up a shot between the outstretched arms of Cavaliers guards Wayne Ellington and Shaun Livingston. Forward Brandon Bass scored a season-high 22 points for the Celtics, who snapped a five-game losing streak. Ellington paced Cleveland with 16 points, while shooting guard C.J. Miles had 13 points and a career-high six assists.

THE STAT: Boston ended the game on a 21-6 run to erase a 14-point deficit, which was the largest spread for either team all evening. The Cavaliers had taken an 86-72 lead on a short jumper by center Marreese Speights with 8:08 left, but blew their second straight large late lead at home. "I thought we stopped being aggressive," Cleveland coach Byron Scott said. "We were looking at the clock, playing not to lose the game, instead of trying to win the game." Green scored nine of his 21 points over the final eight minutes, including his game-winning layup at the buzzer.

TURNING POINT: After Miles made two free throws to extend the Cavaliers' lead to 92-89 with 39 seconds left, Celtics shooting guard Paul Pierce scored on a fadeaway jumper just seven ticks later -- giving Boston a two-for-one opportunity. When Livingston misfired on a short jumper with 11 seconds remaining, shooting guard Jordan Crawford grabbed the defensive rebound, and the Celtics had the rest of the clock at their disposal. "They had a chance to win it at the end, and they did," Miles said. "It was just a point of execution and us not doing what we needed to."

HOT: The Celtics' win -- coupled with Milwaukee's 100-92 loss in Philadelphia -- extended Boston's lead over the Bucks to 2 1/2 games in the race for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. ... Pierce collected 19 points, 10 rebounds, eight assists, seven turnovers, two blocked shots, and one steal in 36 minutes. ... Green also scored the game-winning basket in the Celtics' previous road victory, 83-81 at Indiana on March 6. ... Cavaliers shooting guard Daniel "Boobie" Gibson had six points and a season-high tying six assists off the bench. ... Cleveland center Tyler Zeller rung up 11 points and nine boards in just 24 minutes.

NOT: The Cavaliers tied their longest losing streak of the season at six games. They also have the third-worst home record in the NBA at 13-22 and the third-worst overall mark at 22-48. ... Cleveland power forward Tristan Thompson missed five of his six field goal attempts and only scored two points in 24 minutes. ... The Cavaliers squandered a 27-point, second-half advantage in their previous home game against Miami. It was the largest blown lead in Cleveland's 43-year NBA history. ... Livingston was the only Cavaliers starter to record a basket or an assist in the fourth quarter. ... Neither team grabbed an offensive rebound in the final 12:45.

QUOTABLE III: "I feel like, at this point, we have to hold ourselves accountable. We're all professionals here, and we should all be communicating with each other and helping each other on the defensive end of the floor."

GOOD MOVE: Rivers could have called the final play for legendary clutch scorer Pierce or sharpshooter Terry, but he opted to go with Green. "I thought Jeff at the four was our best advantage (over Cavaliers power forward Luke Walton)," Rivers explained. "Paul is our best offensive player, but there are certain nights when your team has a better advantage. I figured I was going to go with that advantage."

BAD MOVE: Byron Scott had multiple timeouts left, but opted not to call one before the Cavaliers' final possession, which saw Livingston dribble down the clock before missing a shot in the middle of the key. "(Boston) was going to switch up everything anyway, and it was going to be pretty much the same shot we ended up with," Scott insisted. "Shaun got right into the paint, about a 10-footer, but he just missed it."

NOTABLE: Celtics shooting guard Courtney Lee (left ankle sprain) missed his third straight game, but Rivers said he could play Friday against the Hawks. ... Also out for Boston were power forwards Kevin Garnett (left ankle inflammation) and Jared Sullinger (season-ending back surgery), and point guard Rajon Rondo (season-ending right ACL surgery). Garnett is expected to miss 1-2 more weeks. ... Cleveland played without its top three scorers in All-Star point guard Kyrie Irving (left shoulder sprain), shooting guard Dion Waiters (left knee soreness), and center Anderson Varejao (season-ending right knee surgery). Irving is out until at least early April, while Waiters' status will be updated later this week. ... The Cavaliers are 62-156 since LeBron James left the franchise for Miami in July 2010.
