Nets-Clippers Preview

Following one of their worst defensive games of the season, the Los Angeles Clippers put together perhaps their best performance in their last contest.

They may face a stiffer challenge trying to contain the Brooklyn Nets, who haven't had any trouble scoring so far on their road trip.

The Pacific Division-leading Clippers will try to claim back-to-back victories for the first time this month and beat the Nets for the eighth time in nine home games on Saturday night.

After matching a season high for points given up in regulation in a 116-101 loss at Sacramento on Tuesday, Los Angeles (47-22) tightened things up in a big way in a 101-72 victory over Philadelphia on Wednesday.

The Clippers allowed their lowest point total of the season, finished with 13 steals and forced 19 turnovers that led to 24 points in the team's fourth win in five home games.

"You got to stay calm and fight our way back in and we did that," forward Blake Griffin said. "We had a big letdown (against the Kings) so to have a bounceback like this in a back-to-back, it's a good win."

Now Los Angeles will have to find a way to contain a Brooklyn team that has averaged 116.0 points on 52.3 percent shooting in its two victories to kick off an eight-game trip. The Nets (40-28) outscored Dallas 91-64 after the first quarter Wednesday en route to a 113-96 win.

Brooklyn, which is right on New York's heels for the Atlantic Division lead, clinched a playoff berth with Denver's win over the 76ers on Thursday.

The Nets have been playing well on the road, winning seven of nine to move within two victories of the single-season franchise record of 20. Deron Williams and Brook Lopez combined for 69 points on 28-of-47 shooting on Wednesday and the Nets shot better than 50.0 percent for the third time in four games.

"When you're feeling good and feel like you can't miss, it's a good feeling," said Williams, who scored 31 in each of the first two games of the trip.

Williams and the Nets' backcourt may catch a break Saturday. Eric Bledsoe (calf) has missed the Clippers' last five games while Chauncey Billups (hamstring) sat out Wednesday's win, and both are questionable to return against Brooklyn.

Lopez finished with a season-high 38 points on 15-of-22 shooting on Wednesday and had a team-high 26 in an 86-76 home win over the Clippers on Nov. 23.

He's averaged 24.7 points over his last three games in this series.

Brooklyn stifled the high-scoring Clippers in the first meeting, holding them to 40.3 percent shooting - including 4 of 17 from 3-point range - and 29 points in the second half.

The Nets' defense has also been a key on the road lately, as they've allowed just 88.4 points over their last five away from Brooklyn.

Chris Paul has scored just 12.2 per game in his last five against Brooklyn, but Griffin has averaged 22.0 points and 12.0 rebounds in his last four in this series. Griffin has 23 and 14 in the Nets' last visit on Jan. 16, 2012, a 101-91 Los Angeles win that marked its seventh in the last eight meetings at Staples.

Despite its struggles in Los Angeles, Brooklyn has won five of the last six meetings overall.

Paul's 29 points help Clippers beat Nets 101-95

LOS ANGELES (AP) After going 4-4 in their previous eight games, the Los Angeles Clippers were looking to set a tone for themselves before heading out on their last big road trip before the playoffs.

Chris Paul made sure it started with him.

The All-Star guard scored 17 of his 29 points in the fourth quarter after banging his left knee early in the game and the Clippers held off the Brooklyn Nets 101-95 on Saturday night in a matchup of playoff-bound teams.

"A lot of these games we've been letting get away from us," Paul said. "Tonight we found a way to get stops when we needed and we got some big buckets when we needed them.

Paul made 12 of 13 free throws and had 11 assists while going against Deron Williams. Willie Green added 15 points, DeAndre Jordan had 13 points and 12 rebounds, and Blake Griffin scored 11 points for the Clippers, who improved to 28-8 at home and won their second in a row.

It was their franchise-record 10th consecutive victory against an Eastern Conference team.

"We played the best in the biggest moments," Clippers coach Vinny Del Negro said.

The Nets were led by Brook Lopez and Williams with 18 points each. Gerald Wallace and Joe Johnson added 15 points each and ex-Clipper Reggie Evans had 16 rebounds while holding down Griffin's numbers.

"It's tough because we did so well for 3 1/2 quarters, and then the way it ended, I felt it was really our game," Lopez said.

The Clippers got a scare in the first quarter when Paul bumped his left knee with Keith Bogans and briefly left the game. It was similar to what happened to Paul in January when he ended up with a bruised right kneecap after colliding with J.J. Redick and missed games.

"No question," Paul said when asked if he experienced a flashback. "I know it wasn't done on purpose. It's just one of those things when people are setting screens on you, they just didn't give me a step. Hopefully it'll be all right."

Del Negro was uneasy when he saw Paul's collision, especially with just 12 games remaining in the regular season.

"I wasn't happy he hit knees, but if I had to pick a knee I was glad it was the left," he said.

Paul carried the Clippers in the fourth when they rallied from five points down to take the lead for the first time since the second period and avoid a season sweep by the Nets.

The Nets tied it at 90-all on four straight points by Lopez.

"We needed a couple more free throws or a few less turnovers down the stretch," Nets interim coach P.J. Carlesimo said. "We put ourselves in a position to win the game, and they just did a much better job closing it out than we did."

Paul's jumper put the Clippers back in front 92-90. Jamal Crawford, who finished with 13 points, stole the ball from Williams and dunked on the fast break for a 94-90 lead with 48 seconds left.

"That was the biggest play of the game," Paul said. "I had no clue what was happening. I was guarding D-Will. I heard the crowd go nuts."

Williams called his error "definitely a huge and costly play, and one I wish I could get back.

"They just pick-and-rolled us to death, and we just didn't do a good job as a team of defending it in the second half," he said.

Johnson's running layup cut the lead to two points before Paul completed a three-point play for a 97-92 lead with 22 seconds left.

Paul scored 11 of the Clippers' final 13 points.

"He takes command of the offense within the last four or five minutes and he makes sure they get a great shot every time," Johnson said, "and that's what they did. We had a lot of open looks that we normally make, and we just came up short a few times."

Eric Bledsoe returned for the Clippers after missing the last five games with a sore left calf. He scored seven points in about 10 minutes, and Paul credited him with being "all over the ball. That's a point guard's nightmare."

Jordan scored six points in the Clippers' 18-11 spurt that began with Paul's 3-pointer and was capped with one from Caron Butler that tied the game at 65-all late in the third. Jordan scored on back-to-back alley-oops from Paul and Griffin.

From there, the Nets outscored the Clippers 10-5 to lead 75-70 heading into the final 12 minutes.

The Nets led most of the second quarter and a free throw by Evans put them up 48-47 at the break. The Clippers led by eight points in the first quarter, when they made 5 of 10 3-pointers, before the Nets closed on a 14-7 run to trail 25-24.

NOTES: The Nets were seeking their first road win against the Clippers since Nov. 15, 2010. ... The Clippers' old consecutive win streak against the East was nine games from Feb. 19-Nov. 14, 2001. ... The Clippers clinched a playoff berth in consecutive seasons for the third time in franchise history after Utah lost in overtime to San Antonio on Friday. ... Clippers G Chauncey Billups missed his second straight game because of a strained right groin. ... The Clippers' Lamar Odom guarded Kris Humphries for a while in the first half, with Odom's wife Khloe Kardashian looking on. The trio is still officially related through Kim Kardashian's brief marriage to Humphries; their divorce trial is set for May 6.

Notebook: Clippers 101, Nets 95

THE FACTS: For a few anxious minutes in the Los Angeles Clippers' 101-95 win over the Brooklyn Nets on Saturday night, it seemed like Chris Paul might not be around to save the day.

Paul went down late in the first quarter for the Clippers (48-22) after colliding with a Nets (40-29) player who was setting a back screen. He lay on the floor clutching his left knee then hobbled to the bench, where a large ice pack was attached. He returned, however, and the Clippers can thank him for scoring 17 of his team-high 29 points in the fourth quarter, including seven in the final 22 seconds to keep L.A. in fourth place in the Western Conference standings.

QUOTABLE: "I just tried to be aggressive on the ball screen and push the ball. Luckily, we got into the bonus early, which gave me the opportunity to attack, make them grab hold of me and just try to get to the free-throw line as much as possible."

THE STAT: For the second straight game, the Clippers played without starting shooting guard Chauncey Billups. But, once again, Willie Green proved more than capable of stepping into his shoes. Green, who usually falls out of the rotation when Billups is healthy, matched his season high with 15 points, including 10 in the opening quarter. He scored 13 points in relief of Billups in Wednesday's victory against the visiting 76ers. Billups is sidelined with a groin injury.

TURNING POINT: Paul broke a 90-90 tie when he took advantage of a defensive switch and sank a 20-footer over Reggie Evans. Jamal Crawford then stole a lazy pass from Deron Williams and scored on a breakaway dunk to extend the lead to four with 48 seconds left. Joe Johnson banked in a drive to pull Brooklyn back within two, but Paul split defenders as he drove into the lane and hit a fall-away five-footer as he was fouled by Williams. He made the free throw to push the lead to five with 22 seconds left, and then made four more in the last 16 seconds to secure the win.

HOT: Clippers center DeAndre Jordan has been the odd-man-out in a number of fourth quarters this season, as coach Vinny Del Negro often opts for a smaller lineup down the stretch. But he stayed with Jordan for most of the final quarter against the Nets, and that probably had a lot to do with his success earlier in the game. Jordan made all six of his field-goal attempts and scored 13 points. He also grabbed 12 rebounds for his 10th double-double of the season. In the last six games, he's a combined 25-for-28 from the floor. Gerald Wallace owned the third quarter for the Nets, a stretch in which they opened up an eight-point lead. He scored 13 of his 15 points in the third quarter, and some regular observers considered it his best 12 minutes of the season.

QUOTABLE II: "[Nets center Brook] Lopez is obviously big, so we needed some length on him. A lot of teams now go small and don't always have a big in there as much as a guy like Lopez. ... I thought [DeAndre Jordan] was very active, made some plays over the top for us."

NOT: Clippers forward Blake Griffin had a tough matchup against Evans, and it's safe to say he lost that battle. Griffin tried a variety of spins, fakes and drop steps to get to the basket, but Evans didn't budge. Griffin ended up scoring 11 points on 4-for-11 shooting and only managed seven rebounds, compared to 16 for Evans.

GOOD MOVE: Johnson recognized his 40-pound size advantage on Green and Crawford, powering his way to 10 first-quarter points, most coming close to the basket. Unfortunately, Johnson was slowed by a right quad contusion in the third quarter and only managed five points in the second half. Brooklyn coach P.J. Carlesimo said after the game Johnson is questionable for Sunday's game in Phoenix.

BAD MOVE: As hot as Wallace was in the third quarter, the Nets were unable to get him any shots in the fourth. Brooklyn also hurt its chanced by missing four free throws on eight attempts in the final quarter and committing four turnovers that led to nine points by the Clippers.

NOTABLE: Brooklyn backup forward Kris Humphries played for the first time since March 2 and spent time guarding Lamar Odom. Humphries is trying to annul his five-week marriage to reality star Kim Kardashian, the sister of Odom's wife, Khloe, who sat courtside. ... The Clippers improved their league-leading record to 36-2 when leading after the first quarter. ... Clippers backup point guard Eric Bledsoe returned after missing the previous five games with a sore left calf. He finished with seven points, including a three-point play with 8:02 left that gave L.A. its first lead since the second quarter. ... The Clippers have won a franchise-record 10 straight games against Eastern Conference opponents.
