The Houston Rockets hoped their longest homestand of the season would allow them to avoid the inconsistency that's plagued them at times, and they've played well in three of four thus far.

Houston, though, can't afford to take short-handed Cleveland lightly - particularly after the Cavaliers' latest effort.

The Rockets look for a 10th win in their last 12 home games as they continue this seven-game stretch at the Toyota Center on Friday night.

While the up-and-down Rockets haven't won more than three in a row or lost more than two straight since mid-January, they seem to be taking advantage of an opportunity to build some momentum on their home floor.

Houston has won nine of 11 at the Toyota Center, and on Wednesday bounced back from one of their worst losses of the season. After getting trounced by 30 against Golden State on Sunday, the Rockets (37-31) built a 26-point lead before hanging on for a 100-93 win over Utah.

James Harden had 29 points and hit 17 of 18 from the foul line, while Jeremy Lin added 24 on 9-of-13 shooting.

The Rockets, who hold the No. 7 spot in the Western Conference, extended their lead to 1 1/2 games over the eighth-place Los Angeles Lakers and three games over the ninth-place Jazz. They also moved to within one game of the Warriors for sixth place.

Now Houston will try to keep it going against the Central Division-worst Cavaliers (22-46) before wrapping up the homestand with a pair of first-place clubs in San Antonio and Indiana.

"We're still not locked into the playoffs yet, so every game counts," Harden said. "We have to bring our attention to detail to every game. (Friday) is a very big game for us."

Playing without top scorers Kyrie Irving, Dion Waiters and Anderson Varejao, Cleveland led by as many as 27 points in the third quarter on Wednesday before Miami stormed back for a 98-95 victory to extend its winning streak to 24 games.

Wayne Ellington finished with a team-high 20 points and Tristan Thompson added 18 and eight rebounds in the team's fourth straight loss.

The Cavs won't have any of their top three scorers Friday, which doesn't bode well considering they've lost 20 of 23 in Houston - including five straight by an average of 15.4 points. Cleveland also has lost 11 of its last 12 on the road versus West opponents.

"When we line up, we expect to go out there and win, regardless of who is out there," coach Byron Scott said.

Harden, who leads the NBA in free-throw makes (8.8) and attempts (10.2) per game, hit 14 of 15 from the line on the way to 29 points and added a career-high seven steals in a 112-104 victory at Cleveland on Jan. 5.

The Rockets are averaging a league-best 110.0 points at home and may be able to maintain that pace against the Cavaliers, who have allowed 105.8 points per game in their last 14 road contests.

Irving finished with 30 points, Alonzo Gee had 18 and Thompson added 14 and 16 rebounds in the first meeting, but Cleveland shot just 39.6 percent from the floor.

Thompson is playing well heading into this contest, totaling 38 points on 17-of-31 shooting and 19 boards in his last two games.

Harden leads Rockets' 116-78 rout of Cavs

HOUSTON (AP) The Houston Rockets avoided the trap on Friday night and now can move on to one of their season's most challenging weeks.

James Harden scored 20 points, Chandler Parsons and Omer Asik added 13 points apiece and the Rockets cruised past the cold-shooting Cleveland Cavaliers 116-78 on Friday night.

Thomas Robinson scored 15 points and Greg Smith grabbed a career-high 13 rebounds off the bench for the Rockets. Asik also grabbed 11 rebounds for Houston, which has won four of five games on its current homestand.

The outcome was decided after three quarters, and Houston's starters sat out the fourth, turning their attention toward Sunday's game with San Antonio.

"That was a big win for us, and now we've got an even bigger one coming up Sunday," Parsons said.

Shaun Livingston scored 14 points for the Cavaliers, who've dropped five in a row and nine of their last 11 games. Cleveland failed to reach 20 points in each of the last three quarters and shot 36 percent (31 of 86) for the game. Houston also had a 54-32 edge in rebounds.

"As I told our guys, it was the first game in a long time that I saw us being very disconnected on both ends of the floor," Cleveland coach Byron Scott said.

The Rockets currently hold the No. 7 spot in the Western Conference. After the Spurs come to town, Houston faces Indiana, Memphis and the Los Angeles Clippers next week.

"We could see some of these teams coming up (in the playoffs), like Memphis and the Clippers," Parsons said. "It's a big test for us, to see where we stand with the elite teams."

The injury-depleted Cavaliers are hardly one of those, and the Rockets started to take control in the second quarter.

Harden returned after a long rest with 6:44 remaining in the first half, promptly stole the ball from Wayne Ellington and raced for a one-handed dunk. The Rockets ranked sixth in steals (8.51 per game) coming into Friday. Harden and Carlos Delfino sank back-to-back 3-pointers later in the quarter as the Rockets stretched the lead into double digits.

Livingston and Ellington sank jumpers in the final two minutes as the Cavaliers briefly seemed to find their shooting touch. But Delfino just beat the halftime buzzer with his second 3-pointer and Houston led 58-43 at the break.

Houston outrebounded Cleveland 14-5 in the second quarter and held the Cavaliers to 7-for-18 shooting.

"The entire defensive mindset was amazing," Harden said. "It was probably one of our best performances we've had on the defensive end all year."

Cleveland's shooting was even worse in the third quarter and Houston blew it open.

The Rockets found little defensive resistance inside and Asik and Parsons cut inside for easy baskets early in the third quarter to extend the lead. The Rockets continued to control the boards, particularly Asik, who was fouled making his 10th rebound with 6:49 left in the third quarter. He split two free throws, then dunked 30 seconds later for a 69-51 lead.

Last month, Houston squandered 17-point leads in consecutive games and lost. Parsons knew that wasn't going to happen on Friday night.

"We've had tendencies of getting big leads and then letting them (opponents) come back in," he said. "I thought it was big to keep our foot on the gas pedal and not look back and not let them keep climbing and give them any hope."

Harden and backup point guard Patrick Beverley sank 3-pointers in the last two minutes of the quarter and Houston led 87-61 heading to the fourth. The Cavaliers went 6 for 24 from the field in the third quarter.

"We just seemed like we were on our heels, waiting to see what they were going to do," Scott said.

The Cavaliers blew a 27-point lead in a 98-95 loss to Miami on Wednesday night and they were once again missing their top three scorers. Point guard Kyrie Irving (23 points per game) may miss the rest of the season with a left shoulder sprain, center Anderson Varejao (14.1 ppg) is definitely out for the year with a torn quadriceps and rookie guard Dion Waiters (14.7 ppg) is out indefinitely with a sore left knee. Scott said before the game that Waiters will be re-evaluated next week.

Notes: The Cavaliers have lost six in a row in Houston. ... Cleveland failed to reach 100 points for the ninth time in 11 games. ... Harden reached 20 points for the 57th time this season. ... Asik recorded his 29th double-double of the season and his first since March 6. ... Lin scored four points for Houston, snapping a streak of three consecutive games with at least 20.

THE FACTS: The Houston Rockets did not stumble into the trap known as the short-handed Cleveland Cavaliers, rolling to a 116-78 rout Friday at Toyota Center.

James Harden scored 20 points on nine shot attempts, and Omer Asik recorded his 29th double-double of the season (13 points, 11 rebounds) for the Rockets (38-31), who have won 10 of their last 12 home games and six consecutive meetings with the Cavaliers in Houston. Rookie Thomas Robinson finished with a career-high 15 points on 6-for-7 shooting, six rebounds, three steals and two blocks off the bench.

Shaun Livingston led Cleveland (22-47), which has lost five straight games overall and four in a row on the road, with 14 points and two steals. Wayne Ellington added 13 points for the Cavaliers, who scored 32 fewer points in the paint than the Rockets, were outrebounded 54-32 and shot a dismal 36.0 percent for the game.

Friday's victory, combined with the San Antonio Spurs' win over the Utah Jazz, gives Houston a four-game cushion over the ninth-place Jazz in the Western Conference standings. The Rockets, who sit just one-half game behind the sixth-place Golden State Warriors, also hold the head-to-head tiebreaker over Utah and Golden State.

THE STAT: The Rockets' defense sealed driving lanes and did not allow Cleveland to get comfortable around the basket in the second and third periods. The Cavaliers scored only 10 points on 5-for-15 (33.3 percent) shooting in the paint during this 24-minute stretch in which Houston put the game out of reach.

TURNING POINT: Houston exploited Cleveland's pick-and-roll defense early and often, but the Cavaliers looked particularly helpless during a three-minute stretch that bridged the first and second halves. The only ones who could seemingly stop the Rockets were themselves, as they either scored or committed a turnover on each of their possessions during a 12-2 run that extended their 50-41 lead to 62-43 with 10:55 left to play in the third.

QUOTABLE II: "Guys weren't communicating. We were just individuals out there. We weren't a team. ... We didn't take away anything, because I thought we were just on our heels waiting to see what they were going to do. ... You want to continue to progress as a basketball team, and tonight, I thought we took a couple steps back."

HOT: The Rockets' reserves brought plenty of energy to the defensive end to help Houston create separation in the second quarter, but they also handled their counterparts on offense. Patrick Beverley, Carlos Delfino, Robinson and Greg Smith combined for 18 points on 7-for-11 shooting and outrebounded Cleveland's backups 12-4 in the first half. The Rockets, whose bench totaled 56 points, improved to 5-0 this season when their backups combine to score at least 50.

QUOTABLE III: "They [the bench] came in, and they pressured. Patrick Beverley was unbelievable guarding the point guard full-court and not letting them get into their offense."

NOT: The Cavaliers saw a three-point deficit after one period grow to 15 at halftime after they were limited to 7-for-18 (38.9 percent) shooting and two points in the paint in the second quarter.

GOOD MOVE: Houston's defenders contested a large majority of the shots Cleveland took from inside of 15 feet and dared the Cavaliers to beat them with long-range jumpers. Not surprisingly, Cleveland could not connect on enough low-percentage looks at the basket to compete as it shot 33.9 percent (19-for-56) from outside the paint.

BAD MOVE: The Cavaliers' Tristan Thompson, who had scored at least 18 points in his previous two outings, could not avoid foul trouble and logged less than 26 minutes. Thompson's limited playing time likely did not have as much of an effect on Friday's game as his lack of touches. With Thompson's teammates refusing to consistently feed the 6-foot-9 forward, he attempted less than seven shots for only the third time since Dec. 15.

NOTABLE: Cleveland played without its three leading scorers -- Kyrie Irving (left acromioclavicular sprain), Anderson Varejao (season-ending surgery) and Dion Waiters (sore left knee). ... Cleveland's Alonzo Gee and Houston's Jeremy Lin are the only undrafted players in the NBA to start every game this season. ... The Cavaliers rebounded only one of 20 missed shots in the first half. ... The Rockets, who held the Cavaliers to opponent lows in scoring (78 points) and field-goal percentage (36.0 percent), have won 21 of their last 24 meetings with Cleveland at Toyota Center. ... Houston improved to 20-5 this season when it limits its opponent to less than 100 points. ... The Rockets are 14-0 when leading by at least 10 points after three quarters. ... Houston, which shot a scorching 57.1 percent (44-for-77) overall, improved to 19-2 this season when it buries at least half of its field-goal attempts. ... Cleveland fell to 6-23 against Western Conference opponents this season. ... The Cavaliers dropped to 9-25 when they score fewer points in the paint than their opponent. ...
