Thunder-Grizzlies Preview

In their quest for first place in the Western Conference, the Oklahoma City Thunder must do a better job of defending the paint and snap out of a perimeter shooting funk.

Especially considering they'll be on the road Wednesday night against the Memphis Grizzlies, who have won eight straight at home and continue to score inside effectively.

Even with Tuesday's 114-104 home loss to Denver, the Thunder (50-18) have still won 11 of 14. But with 1 1/2 games separating them from West-leading San Antonio, each game is crucial.

Oklahoma City had no answers for the Nuggets inside, giving up a season-worst 72 points in the paint while mustering 50 of their own.

Memphis presents another big challenge as it is seventh in the league in points in the paint per game at 43.2.

The Thunder are third in the league in 3-point shooting at 38.3 percent, but their hitting just 27.8 percent of their shots from distance over the last six games. Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook have hit a combined 10 of their 43 3-point attempts over that stretch.

Catching fire could prove difficult against the Grizzlies, who have held opponents to 26.5 percent 3-point shooting over their last five home games.

"We missed shots that we normally make and dunks and 3-pointers weren't going," Kevin Durant told the league's official website after the Thunder went 4 for 25 from deep against Denver. "We fought and we've got to stay positive because we've got a game tomorrow. We just have to continue to stay positive and keep pushing."

Oklahoma City has been the league's best team after losses since the start of last season, going 29-6 in games immediately following defeats.

Memphis (45-21) had ended a season-high four-game road trip with two straight losses before bouncing back with a 92-77 home win over Minnesota on Monday.

Percentage points ahead of the Los Angeles Clippers for third place in the West, the Grizzlies not only have their sights set on obtaining home-court advantage in the first round of the playoffs, but they're also well within striking distance of the franchise record for wins. With 16 games left, Memphis is five victories short of the 50 it earned in 2003-04.

"We're trying to build something special," coach Lionel Hollins told the league's official website. "I don't know if we can do it or not, but we've got to work toward it. And that's to contend for a championship."

Mike Conley had a rough shooting stretch during the road trip, going 19 of 54 (35.2 percent) and had seven turnovers in a loss at Denver on Friday, but he had 20 points on 8-of-14 shooting with six assists against the Timberwolves.

Jerryd Bayless is riding a string of strong performances, averaging 16.3 points over his last three games on 7-of-14 shooting from long distance. He's scoring 7.6 points per game this season as a 35.4 percent 3-point shooter.

The teams split two meetings in Oklahoma City earlier this season with Durant totaling 61 points and 17 rebounds. He's averaging 30.0 points while shooting 50.8 percent from the field over his last 16 games against the Grizzlies.

Gasol's tip lifts Grizzlies over Thunder in OT

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) Marc Gasol tipped in Zach Randolph's miss with less than a second left in overtime to give the Memphis Grizzlies a 90-89 victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder on Wednesday night.

In a game that had all the intensity of a playoff matchup, Jerryd Bayless connected from the top of the key for Memphis with 3.7 seconds left in regulation to send the teams into overtime tied at 83. Bayless had 10 points in the fourth quarter.

After Gasol's tip over Kevin Durant put the Grizzlies ahead, Russell Westbrook's desperation shot from past halfcourt was off the mark and Memphis walked away with its 16th victory in 19 games.

Mike Conley led the Grizzlies with 24 points and Bayless had 20. Zach Randolph added 15 points and 18 rebounds, while Gasol had 14 points and 15 rebounds.

Durant led the Thunder with 32 points, including 15 in the third quarter to help Oklahoma City take its first lead. Westbrook scored 20 points on 7-of-25 shooting from the field. Kevin Martin added 17 points, but no other Thunder player had more than seven.

Oklahoma City scored the first points in overtime on a pair of free throws from Thabo Sefolosha. Memphis then scored five straight, including three from Gasol.

The Thunder answered with a 6-footer in the lane from Durant and a layup by Westbrook with 13.2 seconds left for an 89-88 lead.

That set the stage for Gasol's final tip-in.

The game featured physical play, disputed calls and technicals. Westbrook got a technical early for griping; Randolph got one late in the fourth when he thought he was fouled under the Memphis basket.

The physical play was coupled with defensive pressure that led to low shooting percentages. The Thunder ended the night at a season-low 35.7 percent from the field, while Memphis managed to shoot only slightly better at 36 percent.

There were four ties and 14 lead changes in the game.

The Grizzlies maintained their hold on third place in the Western Conference standings and pulled within three games of the Thunder for second.

Once Oklahoma City caught Memphis behind Durant's shooting late in the third quarter, the teams exchanged leads throughout the fourth, eventually leaving them deadlocked at the end of regulation.

Memphis shot well early to build a 10-point lead in the first half before carrying a 44-38 lead into halftime.

Durant and Martin had 10 points apiece at the break. Randolph had 12 for Memphis.

It was a physical first half with neither team shooting well. Durant and Westbrook started a combined 3 of 16.

Tayshaun Prince, who was responsible for guarding Durant, wasn't exactly providing offense, either, going 2 for 8 from the field.

The defensive intensity continued through the early stages of the third period as the teams were a combined 4 of 22 through the first 6 minutes.

But the Thunder kept cutting into the lead as Durant took over offensively, scoring 15 in the quarter. His consecutive baskets late in the third gave Oklahoma City its first lead at 57-56.

Two free throws from Gasol gave Memphis the lead back at 58-57 entering the fourth.

THE FACTS: Marc Gasol's tip-in of a Zach Randolph miss with .08 seconds remaining sent the Memphis Grizzlies were able to come away with a 90-89 overtime win over the Oklahoma City Thunder in front of a sellout crowd of 18,119 at FedExForum.

From the moment Russell Westbrook picked up a technical foul less than two minutes into the game between Memphis (46-21) and Oklahoma City (50-19), you could tell this was going to be an intense battle. And, after an fourth quarter and overtime period that saw 12 lead changes, it wasn't until Memphis came out on top. The win gave the Grizzlies the season series, 2-1, and moved them to within two games in the loss column of the Thunder in the Western Conference standings.

Mike Conley led the Grizzlies with a season-high 24 points, while Kevin Durant had a game-high 32 points.

QUOTABLE: "It's always good to win a game like that because you're playing against one of the best teams in the league. When you have to go through everything we went through in the game, a lot of free throws, a lot of questionable calls here and there, we just played through it. We were forced to handle that adversity against a very good team. That says a lot about our confidence down the stretch and believing we can win regardless."

THE STAT: The Thunder entered the game as the NBA's top scoring team, averaging 106.7 points per game. The Grizzlies were the league's stingiest team, allowing just 89.2 per game. It was the Grizzlies' defense that prevailed in this one, holding the Thunder to just 89 points, which took them an overtime period to reach that total.

TURNING POINT: The Grizzlies actually got the break they needed when they were down 78-76 and were forced to foul Westbrook with 12.4 second remaining. Westbrook could have made it a two possession game, but he missed the first of two free throws, allowing the Grizzlies to eventually hit a 3-pointer to send the game into overtime.

HOT: With Randolph struggling for most of the night, it was the backcourt of Conley and Jerryd Bayless that kept the Grizzlies in the game after Oklahoma City took the lead in the fourth quarter. Conley scored 11 of his 24 in the period while Bayless had 10 of his 20 in the quarter, including four free throws and a 3-pointer in the final 12 seconds.

NOT: It was a frustrating night for Grizzlies forward Randolph, who felt like he wasn't getting any calls in the paint. Randolph was 6-for-23 from the floor, although he managed to have a double-double with 15 points and 18 rebounds.

IN THE ARENA: On hand to watch the playoff-like game was Dallas Cowboys All-Pro defensive end DeMarcus Ware, who was in Memphis visiting children at St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital.

QUOTABLE II: "If your players compete like that, you live with the results. Obviously, it would be a nicer flight to come away with the win, but this is the NBA. You can't win them all, but you have to compete like that."

GOOD MOVE: The Grizzlies had the ball with 25 seconds left in overtime, trailing, 78-74. But, rather than attempt 3-pointers, Memphis coach Lionel Hollins opted to go for two points and foul the Thunder to extend the game and hope the Thunder would miss at the line. They got that break when Westbrook made 1 of the two shots with 12.4 seconds left. Both teams traded four free throws before Bayless drilled a game-tying 3 with 3.7 seconds left. Conley then stole the ball from Durant to send the game into overtime.

BAD MOVE: After Gasol's tip-in, the Thunder still had one time out remaining. Brooks elected not to use it, and the long heave by Westbrook to end the game was well short.

NOTABLE: Westbrook received a technical foul with 10:06 left in the first quarter. Seven seconds later, he fouled Gasol and then pushed him without drawing a second technical. He would be frustrated much of the night as ended up missing 18 of the 25 shots he attempted, although he still managed to score 20 points, including nine in the fourth quarter. Durant shook off a 3-for-9 start in the first half in which he scored 10 points, to go 7-for-14 in the second half and score 20 points. But the league's leading scorer was cold again in the overtime where he was 1-for-5 for two points. ... The Thunder have now lost back-to-back games against Denver and Memphis, two teams right behind them in the Western Conference standings. ... That was the Grizzlies first one-point victory of the season. ... The Thunder were 2-for-18 (.111) from 3-point range after entering the game as the NBA's third-best 3-point shooting team at 38.3 percent. ... Despite a 46-21 record, tonight's game was just the Grizzlies third sellout of the season and first since Nov. 23 against the L.A. Lakers.
