Celtics-Hornets Preview

After the short-handed Boston Celtics nearly knocked off the hottest team in the NBA, they hope to get a key piece back in time for the start of their road trip.

The Celtics could have Kevin Garnett in the lineup when they take on the sinking New Orleans Hornets on Wednesday night.

Garnett missed the last two contests while dealing with the flu and a strained abductor, but coach Doc Rivers said Garnett was close to playing against Miami on Monday. The Celtics (36-30) are 2-1 without Garnett this season.

Boston led by 17 in the first half against the league-best Heat, but LeBron James' go-ahead basket with 10.5 seconds left gave Miami a 105-103 victory that extended its winning streak to 23.

Jeff Green carried the Celtics offensively with a career-high 43 points. In the three games without Garnett, Green has averaged 28.0 points while going 30 for 44 from the field and 8 for 13 from 3-point range.

Paul Pierce added 17 points, eight rebounds and eight assists but missed a 3-pointer in the final seconds that could have given Boston the win.

"No moral victories, even though it was a close game," Pierce said.

The Celtics had won seven of nine before falling to the Heat, but the two losses came on the road by an average of 19.0 points. Boston is opening a three-game trip and plays six of eight away from home.

A date with the league-worst Hornets could give the Celtics a good chance to get the stretch started with a win. New Orleans (22-46) lost its fourth straight and 12th in 15 games Monday, 93-72 to Golden State in the opener of a seven-game homestand.

Ryan Anderson had 21 points and Anthony Davis added 16, but the Hornets shot 33.7 percent from the field and 3 for 17 from 3-point range.

"We took a lot of bad shots," coach Monty Williams said. "It's a challenge to try to manufacture your offense with guys who are trying their best to make shots when we don't have a guy to get it done, get the ball and go to the basket."

Despite its recent struggles, New Orleans has won four of five meetings with the Celtics and can sweep the season series following a 90-78 victory Jan. 16.

The Hornets rolled to the surprisingly victory in part by dominating the boards, holding a 55-40 advantage. That could again be an area of concern this time for the Celtics, who rank near the bottom of the NBA in rebounding differential at minus-3.8.

Davis has averaged 17.3 points and 10.3 rebounds in his last six games overall.

Garnett led Boston with a team-high 15 points in the first meeting, but he's scored 9.0 per game and shot 37.5 percent in his last three at New Orleans.

Davis tip lifts Hornets over Celtics, 87-86

NEW ORLEANS (AP) Anthony Davis outreached Kevin Garnett and Jeff Green for a last-second tip-in, and the New Orleans Hornets snapped a four-game skid with an 87-86 victory over the Boston Celtics on Wednesday night.

Davis was playing despite missing the morning shootaround with an illness, and finished with nine points and eight rebounds. Ryan Anderson scored 21 points and Eric Gordon 18 for the Hornets. Gordon's floater to win it in the waning seconds missed, but followed up for the winner.

Paul Pierce scored 11 points of his 28 points in the last six minutes to nearly lead Boston back from a nine-point deficit, but missed a jumper with 16 seconds left that could have put the Celtics up by three.

Garnett, returning from a two game absence caused by a left thigh injury and the flu, scored 20 - not quite enough to spare Boston from a second straight loss.

Green, coming off a career-high 43 points in Boston's loss to Miami on Monday night, scored 13 points, all in the first half.

The loss dropped Boston into seventh in the Eastern Conference, 3 1/2 games behind Brooklyn for the fourth seed, which carries with it home advantage in the first round of the playoffs. The Nets beat Dallas, while fifth-place Atlanta beat Milwaukee to pull 1 1/2 games ahead of the Celtics.

Boston had been in control much of the game and led by as many as 13 after Pierce's 3 made it 60-47 early in the third quarter.

Then New Orleans steadily whittled away. During a nearly five-minute span, the Hornets went on a 9-2 run that included dunks by Robin Lopez and Al-Farouq Aminu, and tied the game at 65 on Anderson's free throws with 1:02 left in period.

Anderson then answered David Lee's jumper with two more free throws to tie it at 67 heading into the fourth quarter.

The Hornets then surged into the lead. Brian Roberts hit a driving layup and 3 to open the period, and Anderson later added six straight points to put New Orleans ahead 78-69.

The momentum changed when Pierce worked his way inside for a layup and Garnett followed a reverse layup, igniting a 10-0 run that included a tough soaring scoop shot from Jordan Crawford and four more free throws from Pierce.

After Anderson restored New Orleans' lead with a 3, Pierce tied it with a driving two-handed dunk and followed that with a 3 to put Boston up 84-81 with 2:34 left.

That gave Pierce 11 of 15 Boston points in a span of about three-and-a-half minutes, but he finished the game with a couple of missed mid-range jumpers, giving New Orleans just enough of a window to pull out the upset.

Garnett started fast after his brief layoff, scoring 14 points in the first half. Pierce 12 during the opening two periods, which the Celtics largely controlled.

Boston led by as many as 12 in the opening half, taking a 50-38 lead on Garnett's layup, and the Celtics led 55-45 at halftime.

Notes: While Austin Rivers' broken right hand prevented him from playing against the team his father, Doc Rivers, coaches, the younger Rivers said he was at least able to take his father out for dinner at one of celebrity chef Emeril Lagasse's New Orleans restaurants on Tuesday night. "That's the first time I've ever paid for my dad," Austin Rivers said. "The bill came and I was ready to get up. ... He looked at me like, `It's your turn now.' It feels good. You work hard. Finally you take care of somebody that has taken care of your whole life." ... The Hornets won the teams' only other matchup this season, 97-78 in Boston on Jan. 16. ... Boston fell to 12-21 on the road and wraps up its three-game road trip with games on Friday at Dallas and Saturday at Memphis.

THE FACTS: Anthony Davis tipped in a missed Eric Gordon runner and the New Orleans Hornets pulled off an 87-86 come-from-behind win over Boston Celtics on Wednesday night.

Down 13 early in the third quarter, New Orleans went on a 31-9 run, taking a lead that set up the finish, which helped the Hornets break a four-game losing streak. Davis, fighting a stomach bug, ended the game with just nine points and eight rebounds, but the final points and board were the biggest of the night. He was in position for the game-winning tip thanks to key defense and rebounds down the stretch. Gordon hit a 6-foot jumper to close a five-point deficit. Seconds later, Ryan Anderson, who led the Hornets with 21 points, went 2-for-3 from the free-throw line.

On Boston's ensuing possession, Paul Pierce missed a 16-foot jumper and Anderson rebounded. That set up New Orleans with the final shot, which Davis converted for the win.

Pierce helped Boston battle back with 11 fourth-quarter points, but they weren't enough. He finished with a game-high 28 points while Kevin Garnett added 20 points and six rebounds. Jeff Green cooled off after 11 first-quarter points and finished with just 13.

Greivis Vasquez guided New Orleans with 13 points, seven rebounds and six assists while Brian Roberts had 12 points off the bench as the backup point guard.

QUOTABLE: "He was really sick and I almost didn't put him back in the game. I was going to put him back in around the seven-minute mark, I think, in the fourth and I looked at him and I said, 'Are you OK?' And he just looked at me with sad eyes and he was like, 'I'm good coach.' I just said, 'Man, I can't do that to you.' The parent in me or the guardian in me takes over at times. Then I saw him on the bench kind of excited and getting into a little bit. ... And the last shot he made was his first game-winner and it comes on a night when he's sick and puking and not feeling his best. Kudos to him."

THE STAT: 45-28 -New Orleans lacked the size against Boston but that didn't keep the Hornets from outrebounding the Celtics by 17. New Orleans also had 11 second-chance points. And none of the rebounds and put-backs were more important than the game-winner by Davis, who outmuscled Garnett and Green for the key play.

TURNING POINT: The Hornets trailed big early in the third when a 9-0 run turned into that 31-9 spree that gave New Orleans home. Davis started it with a layup. A Vasquez jumper and free throw cut the 13-point deficit to eight. Gordon then converted a layup and a jumper and New Orleans was down only 60-56 with 7:03 to play in the third quarter.

HOT: Pierce might have missed the final key shot for Boston, but without his 9-for-17 performance and 8-for-8 night at the free-throw line, the Celtics wouldn't have had a chance at the end.

NOT: Boston guard Avery Bradley, who was shooting 41 percent heading into Wednesday night, went cold against the Hornets. Bradley was 2-for-10 and finished with just five points and five rebounds.

GOOD MOVE: Williams tends to err on the side of caution when Hornets players are sick or injured. But he rolled the dice with Davis and was rewarded in the end for putting the No. 1 overall pick back in the game at the end.

NOTABLE: The Hornets swept the season series with Boston 2-0. ... New Orleans' bench outscored Boston's 39-15. ... Boston's Bradley had a season-high five steals. ... The Celtics went 16-for-17 from the free-throw line. ... The Celtics had just four offensive rebounds all night.
