While the Memphis Grizzlies managed to slow down the hottest team in the Western Conference, it didn't translate into a victory in their last game.

They may be able to get back on track against a Utah Jazz team coming off one of its worst offensive performances of the season.

After having their six-game winning streak stopped, the Grizzlies will try to bounce back with their 15th win in 17 games on Saturday night when they visit the struggling Jazz.

Memphis (44-20) has been one of the NBA's best defensive teams all season and allowed just 85.8 points per game - 3.6 below its league-leading 89.4 mark - in 11 games heading into its contest at Denver on Friday.

The high-scoring Nuggets, meanwhile, entered the game averaging 111.5 points during their season-best 10 game winning streak before the Grizzlies held them 24.5 points below that average in an 87-80 road loss.

It was Denver's lowest point total since an 81-72 loss at Memphis on Dec. 29.

The Grizzlies are percentage points ahead of the Los Angeles Clippers and one-half game in front of the Nuggets for the third seed in the Western Conference.

"We understand where the standings are at," said guard Mike Conley. "But we still have 20 games left and anything can happen from there. We're just worried about tomorrow."

Now the Grizzlies turn their attention to the Jazz (33-32), who have lost eight of 10 to fall one game behind the Los Angeles Lakers for the final playoff spot in the West.

Gordon Hayward had a team-high 20 points, but leading scorers Al Jefferson and Paul Millsap combined for just 15 on 5-of-18 shooting in a 110-87 loss at Oklahoma City on Wednesday.

Jefferson scored eight while shooting 4 for 13 from the field, but appears poised for a better effort Saturday. He's averaged 18.6 points and 10.0 rebounds in the last five against the Grizzlies.

Millsap scored seven in his first action since missing two games with inflammation in his right knee.

The Jazz hope to recover from their forgettable offensive display on Wednesday. They scored 28 in the first half, shot a season-low 35.0 percent and were outrebounded 48-35.

"We're trying to get in the playoffs we can't have games like this," Hayward told the team's official website. "We were down by 20-plus points and that's just stupid. We gotta execute our offense better."

It doesn't figure to get any easier against a Memphis defense that ranks near the top of the NBA in forced turnovers (15.8 per game) and rebounding differential (plus-4.0).

The Grizzlies have outscored the Jazz by a 55-28 margin in the third quarter on the way to a pair of wins in the season series. Memphis claimed a 103-94 home victory on Nov. 5 before winning 99-86 in their last trip to Utah on Dec. 15.

Zach Randolph carried much of the load, totaling 41 points and 34 rebounds to help the Grizzlies hold a 99-77 advantage on the glass.

Memphis has shot 47.3 percent from the floor while winning seven of nine on the road, with its only losses in that span to East-leading Miami and Denver.

The Jazz had won nine straight home games in this series before the Grizzlies' victory in December.

Hayward's 17 lift Jazz over Grizzlies 90-84

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) The Memphis Grizzlies were playing their fourth game in five nights and threw everything they had at the Utah Jazz - including Marc Gasol's shoe.

It wasn't enough Saturday night as Utah used an 8-0 fourth-quarter run and Gordon Hayward's 3-pointer with 17 seconds left to secure a 90-84 victory.

"It showed how physical the game was," said Paul Millsap, who finished with 13 points and eight rebounds. "A guy loses his shoe, he picks it up, plays defense."

Gasol was called for a personal foul on the play as he whipped the shoe at Derrick Favors as the Jazz third-year power forward drove toward the hoop early in the fourth quarter with the Jazz leading by four.

Mo Williams quipped that Gasol should have been ejected, even if he "got all ball" with the shoe.

Gasol's three-point play with 4:24 left pulled Memphis within 79-76, only to see Millsap score five straight and Hayward hit another 3 for an 87-76 Jazz lead.

Jerryd Bayless, who led all scorers with 24 points, tried to bring the Grizzlies back. He scored eight straight, including back-to-back 3s, but turned it over on the next possession with 38 seconds left before Hayward hit the clinching 3.

Hayward led the Jazz with 17 points in his first start since November, moving into the lineup at small forward as Jazz coach Tyrone Corbin hoped to add another playmaker on both ends of the court.

The Grizzlies (44-21) had won 14 of 15 but have dropped two straight to close out a four-game road trip.

Utah (34-32) pulled within a half-game of the idle Lakers for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference.

"That was a tough loss," Memphis coach Lionel Hollins said. "They played with a lot of energy and we just didn't play smart down the stretch."

The Jazz used the lineup change to put behind a forgettable effort in Wednesday's 23-point loss in Oklahoma City, when they scored 28 in the first half and shot a season-low 35 percent.

They also played with more energy on Saturday. Williams dived to the floor to force a Memphis shot-clock violation in the first quarter and Enes Kanter went head first into the crowd trying to save a rebound.

The Grizzlies put up a fight, too, with Gasol slinging his shoe at Favors trying to slow him down in the fourth quarter.

"I didn't even know he hit me with a shoe at first until somebody told me," said Favors, who finished with 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting, with six rebounds and two blocks in 27 minutes off the bench. "He had to do what he had to do, I was attacking the rim."

Williams, still trying to regain his form after missing 32 games with torn ligaments in his shooting hand, knew the Jazz had to match Memphis' intensity.

"They're as physical as they come," Williams said. "The only way to be in a game with them is be as physical."

With 16 games remaining for Utah, he said the Jazz finally have found their identity.

"We got to grit and grind," he said. "I can steal that from Memphis because we are a replica of them. They've been together long enough to play that way each and every night. Collectively we didn't know when we were going to find it, but that's who we are. We have to be physical. ... We can't pound the ball on offense then on defense be soft. We have to take a page out of Memphis' book and they're physical on both ends of the floor."

Memphis led 50-45 at the break, but the Jazz used a big third quarter to regain control.

The Jazz had been outscored 55-28 in the third quarter in a pair of losses this season to Memphis. They outscored the Grizzlies 24-9 in the third Saturday to take a 69-59 lead into the fourth.

Randy Foye's 3-pointer and a 10-foot bank shot by Williams gave the Jazz a 64-55 lead. Hayward pushed it to 66-55 with a jumper off the break and Williams sank a free throw for a 12-point Jazz lead with 1:59 left in the third after Hollins was called for a technical.

Despite opening the fourth on an 8-2 run, the Grizzlies couldn't get over the hump at the end.

"Down 10 (entering the fourth), that's tough to recover from," said guard Tony Allen.

So was Hayward's huge 3, his third of the game, a shot Hollins called a "dagger."

"It's tough, but we have another game on Monday where we will be able to bounce back," said Bayless, who hit 9-of-14 shots and 4-of-7 3-pointers. "We wish we could have won tonight, but at the same time it wasn't a bad road trip."

Notes: Longtime Jazz broadcaster Hot Rod Hundley attended Saturday's game. ... Memphis G Tony Wroten did not dress Saturday and returned to the team hotel because of migraines. .. Conley entered the game needing two steals to break his own franchise record for total steals in a season (144 in 2010-2011). He finished with one. ... Randolph added 19 points for Memphis and Conley 13 but shot just 6 of 18. Gasol was just 5 of 14 for 11 points. ... Memphis' nine third-quarter points and two field goals were a season low for a quarter.

Notebook: Jazz 90, Grizzlies 84

THE FACTS: The Utah Jazz needed a win -- any win -- in order to stay in contention for the Western Conference playoffs.

The fact that they earned a victory over a team with a winning record for the first time in nearly a month was icing on the cake.

Gordon Hayward, in the starting lineup for the first time since November, had 17 points, eight rebounds and three assists to pace the Jazz to a 90-84 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies on Saturday night. Al Jefferson had 14 points, while Paul Millsap chipped in 13 points and eight rebounds and Mo Williams had 13 points and six assists for Utah.

Jerryd Bayless' 24 points led Memphis, which was playing on the second night of a back-to-back. Zach Randolph had 19 points and nine assists as the Grizzlies suffered their second straight road defeat. They haven't lost three straight road games all season.

QUOTABLE: "We needed to make sure we came in and were the aggressor. They are good defensively themselves and are physical. We wanted to make sure we punched first and I thought we did that tonight."

THE STAT: The Grizzlies' energy level seemed to be sapped after halftime and it showed in their shooting and execution in the third quarter. Memphis shot 2-for-16 (12.5 percent) while getting outscored 24-9 in the third quarter. The Grizzlies also dished zero assists and were outrebounded 13-8 in the third. Memphis fought back to make a game of it in the fourth quarter, but its lousy third quarter play was costly.

TURNING POINT: In a game that had several momentum twists and turns -- the Jazz trailed by as many as eight and led by as many as 13 -- Utah finally put the game away in the fourth. The Jazz went on a 12-3 run to go ahead 87-76 with 2:56 remaining. Derrick Favors started the push with a layup following a sweet spin move into traffic on Marc Gasol. Jefferson added a close-range jumper and Hayward capped the spurt by burying a 3-pointer. After the Grizzlies rallied with eight straight points, Hayward put the game away with another 3-pointer to make it 90-84 with 17.3 seconds remaining.

HOT: Millsap overcame a sluggish first half to contribute to Utah's victory. He shot 3-for-4 and had 11 of his points and six of his rebounds in the second half. Favors had an all-around solid game, especially in the second half, to lift the Jazz. He didn't miss a shot after halftime and finished with 10 points and six rebounds after early foul trouble. For the Grizzlies, Bayless caught fire in the fourth quarter. He scored eight straight points to pull Memphis within 87-84. He shot 6-for-9 and scored 16 of his points in the second half. Randolph was feisty and aggressive. He was at his best in the first half, shooting 6-for-7 while collecting five of his rebounds.

NOT: The Jazz started the game in a funk. Utah missed its first five shots, was outrebounded 8-2 and outscored 9-1 in the game's first four minutes. Not to be outdone, the Grizzlies were slightly worse to start the third. They missed their first five shots and committed four turnovers during a 10-1 run for Utah to start the second half. Mike Conley took the most shots for Memphis, 18 of them, and made just six. Tayshaun Prince shot just 3-for-11. For the Jazz, Randy Foye is in a cold spell. He shot 1-for-5 and scored five points in 21 minutes.

QUOTABLE II: "Utah had a big third quarter and then we went into the fourth quarter down 10 and that's tough to recover from. They got to the foul line early and that's hard when you're playing under that much pressure on the road and now it's back to the drawing board."

GOOD MOVE: Hayward became a starter for the Jazz again in a move that was probably long overdue. Hayward started the first 10 games of the season, but has since been used as a sixth man and go-to guy for the second unit. Although the Jazz started the game slowly, the move paid dividends. It adjusted coach Tyrone Corbin's rotation, and Hayward had fresher legs than usual in the fourth quarter. His presence gave the Jazz a jolt after halftime, helping them to dominate the third quarter.

BAD MOVE: Tired legs probably played a role, but Memphis' execution suffered at the worst time. Down 87-84 and with the ball, the Grizzlies had a discombobulated possession that ended with Bayless passing the ball -- to no one -- as time ran down on the shot clock. A defensive gaffe then sealed the loss for the Grizzlies as they doubled Williams, got out of position and left Hayward wide open for a game-clinching 3-pointer.

NOTABLE: Gasol lost his shoe after making a basket early in the third quarter, and then used it to commit a foul. He didn't have enough time to put his shoe back on before getting back on defense, so he used it to slap the ball out of Favors' hands near the basket and was whistled for a foul. Memphis reserve guard Tony Wroten did not play because of a migraine headache. The nine points scored by the Grizzlies in the third period tied an opponent low for a quarter for the Jazz this season. Memphis' two made baskets in the third were a season low for a quarter.
