Knicks-Nuggets Preview

DENVER (AP) - Carmelo Anthony simply won't recognize these Denver Nuggets - even though he had just about everything to do with the makeup of their roster.

The New York Knicks visit the Pepsi Center on Wednesday night in Anthony's first trip back to Denver since forcing his way out of town more than two years ago in a blockbuster trade that reshaped both franchises.

The only familiar face he'll see is point guard Ty Lawson. None of the other Nuggets were here when he was wearing powder blue and gold.

Anthony was feeling nostalgic after the Knicks practiced at the Pepsi Center on Tuesday afternoon.

"I grew up here, I mean, sort of to say. This is where I started my career," he said. "I was 18, 19 years old when I came here. This city grew with me, I grew with the city. We had a lot of good times here in Denver, as a team, as a community. And then it came to a point where we had to split ways. ... It was a mutual agreement, both parties agreed upon that. ... No hard feelings. It was a business decision at that point."

The trade is turning out to be a win-win for both teams.

Denver landed a bevy of young players, trade exemptions and draft picks they've used to retool their roster, and the Knicks got a bona fide superstar to build a team around.

The resurgent Knicks (38-23) are leading the Atlantic Division. The Nuggets (43-22) are in the hunt for home-court advantage in the playoffs, and they're out to prove coach George Karl's proclamation that an NBA franchise doesn't need a superstar to be great.

Karl has repeated that line so often this season that it's become his mantra, although he acknowledges there's a caveat: If the Nuggets keep on rolling, Lawson and/or forward Danilo Gallinari will be considered stars before long.

Gallinari came over in the `Melo deal along with fellow starter Kosta Koufos, key reserve Wilson Chandler and emergency center Timofey Mozgov. The Nuggets also got Raymond Felton, whom they flipped for point guard Andre Miller and two draft picks, one of which landed them Jordan Hamilton.

They used trade exemptions from the deal to acquire Corey Brewer from Dallas and JaVale McGee from Washington. A first-round draft pick acquired in the blockbuster trade was used to get starter Andre Iguodala from Philadelphia last summer, and Denver used a second-round pick from the deal to draft Quincy Miller.

That's 10 Nuggets connected to Anthony's departure from Denver.

The Nuggets were first-round playoff fodder in each of the last two seasons following Anthony's exit, but they only advanced out of the first round once in Anthony's time in Denver. They're trying to catch Memphis for the fourth seed or even the Clippers for the third seed, which could go a long way in helping them go deeper in this year's playoffs.

After all, they're 28-3 at home.

"Even when the trade happened, the guys, they got back and to finish off the season the way they did that year and then to rebuild the way they did and get the team that George was really looking forward to having, a young team, fast-paced team, up-tempo team, I think this is one of the better teams that he's coached," Anthony said.

The Knicks are ahead of Brooklyn and Boston atop the Atlantic Division and are second in the Eastern Conference behind defending champion Miami.

Anthony isn't 100 percent for his return to the Rocky Mountains, however. A nagging right knee injury sidelined him for three games before he returned Monday night and collected 14 points and 10 rebounds in the Knicks' 92-63 blowout loss at Golden State.

Returning to familiar surroundings might keep his mind off his knee.

"I was definitely looking forward to coming back," Anthony said. "It's been two years since I've been back, so I'm definitely looking forward to the basketball game tomorrow."

Even though it's been so long since his departure, fans are sure to let `Melo have it. After all, Anthony was jeered at home in the months leading up to his trade in February 2011.

To be sure, some will show him some love for all the memories of last-second shots and 30-point nights over his eight seasons in Denver that included a trip to the Western Conference finals in 2009.

"I hope it is a celebration but then when the game gets started I hope they are supportive of us and crazy wild for us," Karl said. "The Knicks are one of the teams that travel well in the NBA and has a lot of fans. Our fans have done a good job of drowning out the Laker fans and drowning out the Chicago Bull fans."

Lawson figures it will be a playoff atmosphere when the game tips off.

"This game is going to be crazy," Lawson said. "It will be exciting. Probably the most exciting game of the year. There is going to be so much energy in the gym and they will have the fire to beat us."

Anthony flops in Knicks' 117-94 loss to Nuggets

DENVER (AP) His return to Denver having gone so awry, Carmelo Anthony is returning to New York to get his ailing right knee drained.

"I just didn't have it. I tried," Anthony said after scoring just nine points before leaving early in the third quarter of the Knicks' 117-94 blowout loss to the Nuggets on Wednesday night.

It was Anthony's first game at the Pepsi Center since he demanded a trade to New York more than two years ago, leading to a blockbuster deal that reshaped both franchises.

With the crowd jeering him and his knee barking at him, Anthony had one of his worst games ever at the Pepsi Center, his home for the first eight seasons of his NBA career.

"It started tightening up, started stiffening up. Some movements that I couldn't make, movement laterally, felt like I didn't have no pop, no power," Anthony said. "I tried it in the second half, coming out after halftime. I couldn't move."

So, the Knicks went on to Portland after the game without Anthony, who's heading across the country in the opposite direction.

"I'm going to go get it drained, get the fluid out. Get to the bottom of it quick, so I can get back on the court," Anthony said.

Anthony might have pushed himself more than he should have in order to play in Denver.

"I was always concerned," he said. "I was being naive to myself, saying OK. Trying to psyche myself out, `I can do it. I can do it.' But there comes a point where you've got to figure it out and get to the bottom of it and move on."

Looking back, maybe the Knicks shouldn't have let him play. He returned Monday night at Golden State after missing three games with knee pain.

"I kind of rolled with what he was thinking," Knicks coach Mike Woodson said. "He wanted to play and we played him. The third quarter, he had to pull out. Melo doesn't pull out of very many games. Obviously, it's bothering him. We're going to send him back to be evaluated."

Wilson Chandler scored 24 points and the Nuggets led by as many as 34 points on the way to winning their 10th straight game and 14th straight at home.

This one was such a laugher that their starters didn't play the fourth quarter.

Neither did Anthony, who was 3-of-12 shooting when he left a couple of minutes into the second half.

The crowd that mostly jeered him chanted derisively, "Where is Melo?" throughout the fourth quarter.

Not on the court and not even on the bench.

By game's end, the chant had morphed into, "Who needs Melo?"

The Nuggets raced out to a 64-42 halftime lead with Anthony in New York's lineup and they stretched it to 97-69 after three quarters with him in the visiting locker room.

Iman Shumpert led New York with 20 points, but the Knicks were manhandled on the boards 53-33 and outscored 62-24 in the paint.

"I like my team, and I'm proud of it," Nuggets coach George Karl said. "Not a lot of those guys were here for the drama that went on here and to play with that much pride tonight I thought was first class."

The Nuggets used a 21-1 run to drain the drama from this game midway through the second quarter when New York went almost 7 1/2 minutes between buckets, falling behind 54-31.

"They couldn't score and we ran by them on almost every possession," Karl said. "It was a great energy, the building had an electricity to it. I think our team was at playoff intensity mode. I also think we caught New York in a bad place. Sometimes that happens."

The Knicks trailed 58-28 when they lost Tyson Chandler for the night with a bruised left knee after he slammed into Corey Brewer under the basket and had to be helped to the locker room.

Anthony received a mixed but decidedly strong reception during pregame introductions - when the public address announcer accidentally presented him as No. 15, his number during his eight seasons in Denver, and not his current No. 7.

Masai Ujiri, the Nuggets executive vice president who famously said on the night of the trade, "We got killed," called the deal a win-win Wednesday and said there were no residual hard feelings.

"Honestly, we've moved on," Ujiri told The Associated Press. "Melo was great, great kid, just saw him at halfcourt and spent some time (with him). I think it worked out for everybody. The Nuggets as an organization has moved on and Melo has moved on."

Asked if they were better without him than they were with him, Ujiri demurred.

"I can't answer that question. It's a tough one."

The numbers say they are - albeit barely.

Denver is 100-57 since the blockbuster trade.

In the 157 games before the deal, they were 99-58.

Anthony wasn't the only former Nugget returning to the Pepsi Center. He brought J.R. Smith, Kenyon Martin, Raymond Felton and Marcus Camby with him.

During the first timeout, there was a video tribute to them accompanied by John Sebastian's iconic "Welcome Back" song.

That turned out to be the highlight of the night for the former Nuggets.

Anthony waxed nostalgic about his return after practice Tuesday night, but he hardly recognized the team he left - and not just because they were decked out in their new canary yellow uniforms. Lawson is the only Nuggets player who was teammates with Anthony 25 months ago, but 10 other Nuggets can trace their arrival to Anthony's departure from Denver.

Although there was plenty of animosity when the deal went down Feb. 22, 2011, time has smoothed things over. The Nuggets landed a bevy of young players, trade exemptions and draft picks they've used to retool their roster, and the Knicks got a bona fide superstar to build a team around.

Karl said he was glad this game had finally come and gone.

"Yeah, I think it's time to let everything go and it was probably too long in getting it here," he said.

Notes: Gallinari hit his 500th career 3-pointer. ... The Nuggets have won 32 of their last 42 games. ... Woodson said Chandler is probable for Thursday night's game.

THE FACTS: Carmelo Anthony had a memorable homecoming, but it wasn't the kind he hoped for.

Anthony's first game in Denver since being traded to New York two years ago was forgettable after the Nuggets ran the Knicks out of the building. Wilson Chandler had 24 points, Danilo Gallinari scored 16 and Denver rolled to a 117-94 win Wednesday night in front of a national TV audience.

Anthony finished with nine points in one of his worst performances of the season. Ian Shumpert led the Knicks with 20 and J.R. Smith, another former Nugget, had 15.

Six Denver players scored in double figures. Kenneth Faried had 11 points and 10 rebounds for the Nuggets, who put this one away with a big second quarter.

QUOTABLE: "In the first quarter it was a five-, six-point game and then they started pounding us. We gave up too many buckets at the rim. They were pushing it and we were terrible in getting back."

THE STAT: The Nuggets dominated everywhere, but especially on the boards. They held a 31-15 edge at halftime and finished the game with a 53-33 advantage in rebounding.

TURNING POINT: The Nuggets turned a close game into a laugher early in the second quarter. Smith hit a jumper to cut the lead to 33-30 and the Knicks didn't hit another until Tyson Chandler's bucket 7:22 later. In the drought they missed nine straight shots and had four turnovers. The Nuggets, on the other hand, went on a 25-3 run to take a 58-33 lead.

QUOTABLE II: "We got the perfect lineup in. They tried to open the court up with Melo at the [power forward] and we have a pretty good lineup for that. With Wilson comes in and we're able to run. Probably every position we can outrun them."

HOT: The Nuggets as a team. They've won 10 straight, 14 in a row at home and have scored at least 100 points in 23 of their last 24 games.

NOT: Anthony has struggled in the two games he has played since missing three with a sore right knee. He is 7-for-27 form the field and has missed all seven of his 3-pointers. In those two games Anthony has scored 23 points, 4.9 less than his season average. He left early in the third quarter because of his knee. The Knicks are sending him back to New York instead of going to Portland, where they are playing the third game of a five-game road trip.

QUOTABLE III: "I think it was just time for me to give it time to get to the bottom of it. I'm going to get it drained. At this point that's all it is, getting it drained. I was being naïve to myself and trying to psyche myself out saying, 'I can do it, I can do it.' It just comes to a point you have to figure it out."

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Wilson Chandler has been up and down offensively, but when he's on he shoots for a high percentage. Wednesday he was 9-for-12 from the field.

INSIDE THE ARENA: Anthony's name was called last when New York's starting lineup was announced and he was greeted with more boos than cheers. When the game started Anthony was booed every time he touched the ball. As the game came to a close the fans remaining began chanting "Who needs Melo?" for one final salute to the former Denver superstar.

QUOTABLE IV: "I think it's time to let everything go. It was probably too long in getting it [the game] here. There's a portion that's going to dislike Melo and there's a portion that's going to love Melo, but the majority people hopefully are excited about the team we have at hand."

GOOD MOVE: The Nuggets attacked the basket with abandon, creating easy baskets and drawing fouls. New York committed 21 fouls and the Nuggets shot 26 more free throws than them.

BAD MOVE: Tyson Chandler went down holding his left knee after colliding with Corey Brewer under New York's basket with 1:28 left in the first half. The collision appeared to buckle Chandler's knee and he was helped off the court and to the locker room. He suffered a contusion on the knee and did not return. He will stay with the team and is probable for the game in Portland on Thursday.

NOTABLE: The Knicks didn't shoot their first free throw of the game until there was 4:28 left in the second quarter. ... Gallinari's first 3-pointer of the game was the 500th of his career. ... The Nuggets are 100-57 since trading Anthony on Feb. 22, 2011. In the 157 games prior to the trade they were 99-58.
