The Memphis Grizzlies got by without Zach Randolph during the first four games of their latest surge, but they were certainly happy to see him back in the lineup as it continued.

His presence, though, hasn't been enough to get them past the Los Angeles Clippers in either of this season's meetings.

Memphis seeks its 14th victory in 15 tries Wednesday night as it visits Los Angeles, which is coming off its best offensive performance of the season.

Randolph sprained his ankle in a loss at Miami on March 1 and missed the next four games - all Memphis victories. He returned Tuesday and scored 19 points while adding 10 rebounds in 28 minutes of a 102-97 win at Portland.

He hit 8 of 13 from the field and has a double-double in six of his last seven games for the Grizzlies (43-19), who have won six of seven road games during their current hot stretch.

"I felt pretty good out there," Randolph said. "A little sore, but overall I felt all right."

Mike Conley had a career-high 15 assists and Marc Gasol, who lauded Randolph's effort, scored 20 points. Gasol is shooting 61.8 percent over his last six games.

"He's back," Gasol said of Randolph. "There's no way around it - we need Zach. There's no way around that."

A night after Randolph thrived against one of his former teams, he'll get a chance at another. But Randolph, who averaged 20.9 points in 39 games for the Clippers in 2008-09, has struggled with his shooting against Los Angeles this season. He scored 15 points and had 16 rebounds in a 101-92 loss Oct. 31, but he hit only 5 of 15 from the field and 5 of 9 from the free throw line.

He shot 5 of 16 and had identical free throw numbers while finishing with 15 points and 12 boards Jan. 14 as the Clippers rolled to a 99-73 win at FedEx Forum without Chris Paul.

The Grizzlies, though, are percentage points ahead of the Clippers (45-20) for the No. 3 seed in the Western Conference playoff race and are allowing an NBA-best 89.5 points per game.

Their defense likely will face a tough challenge against a Los Angeles team that set a season high for points in a 129-97 win over Detroit on Sunday.

Paul scored 20 points while adding 14 assists and said the Clippers, who defeated Memphis in seven games in last season's first-round playoff series, are focused on making a move in the tightly packed West. Only six games separate first-place San Antonio from fifth-place Denver.

"Now is the time, probably in the last 10 games or so, when you really start jockeying for position," Paul told the team's official website. "Right now, I think we're just talking about building, making sure we're playing the right way at the right time."

Los Angeles, which has split its last four games, shot a season-best 62.5 percent from the field Sunday as Blake Griffin hit 9 of 12 from the field and scored a game-high 22 points.

The Clippers, though, hope to get better defensively after allowing 103.3 points per game over their last four - well above their average of 94.4.

"It's something we've talked about the past couple of days in practice is turning up the intensity and getting back to playing aggressively, especially defensively," Griffin said.

Los Angeles has won 12 of the last 15 meetings at Staples Center, including last season's playoffs.

Grizzlies beat Clippers for 14th win in 15 games

LOS ANGELES (AP) Exactly six weeks after the Memphis Grizzlies traded their leading scorer for spare parts in what was widely seen as a cost-cutting move, they dominated the Pacific Division-leading Los Angeles Clippers for their 14th victory in 15 games.

So what's got into the Grizz left behind by Rudy Gay?

They say it's nothing fancy: Just hard work, determination and that signature Memphis toughness.

Marc Gasol scored 21 points, Tayshaun Prince added 18 and the surging Grizzlies beat the Clippers 96-85 on Wednesday night for their sixth straight win.

Mike Conley had 17 points and 11 assists, and Zach Randolph scored 13 points as Memphis hung on in the fourth quarter of back-to-back road victories. Shutting down the Clippers' lob game and scoring with their own unflashy offense, the Grizzlies followed up last night's win in Portland with a tenacious effort against the Clippers, who have lost three of five.

It might have been a statement victory, but nobody was making a statement in the upbeat visitors' locker room.

"We don't get caught up in the gravity of the situation too much," Conley said. "We just go out there as a hardworking team every night. This is a huge win, obviously, second game of a back-to-back against a good team. We just did a good job defensively, and playing at our pace."

The Grizzlies realize they're on a 15-4 surge since trading Gay to Toronto on Jan. 30, but they're not getting too excited about their achievements in his absence - although they took particular satisfaction in beating the Clippers, who eliminated them from the first round of the postseason last spring and beat the Grizzlies in their first two meetings this year.

"We've seen this team before, and we have some good battles against this team," Gasol said. "It feels good to get one against them."

What's more, the Grizzlies are excelling during a particularly brutal stretch in their schedule with help from newcomer Prince, the Los Angeles native acquired in the deal for Gay. They're late in a five-week stretch in which they never play consecutive games in the same city, with 10 of 14 games on the road.

Memphis (44-19) is percentage points ahead of Los Angeles (45-21) for third place in the Western Conference, although the Clippers are division leaders.

"We just keep playing good basketball," Prince said. "It's very surprising I'm able to build that bond with them so quickly, without having a training camp. We trust each other, and that's the most important thing."

Chris Paul had 24 points and nine assists, and Blake Griffin added 22 points for the Clippers, who won the clubs' first two meetings this season.

Matt Barnes scored 14 points as a fill-in starter for Los Angeles in a physical meeting of two Western Conference contenders whose bruising seven-game playoff series is still fresh in most players' minds.

"They're pretty physical," Paul said. "We obviously saw that in seven games last year and we were able to adjust to it, but we've got to figure some things out. ... I could care less what (playoff) seed we are. We just need to be playing the right way when the time comes, and we're not there yet."

One game after scoring a season-high 129 points, the Clippers struggled offensively, including a 6-for-25 effort on 3-pointers while scoring just 33 points after halftime. Although the Clippers seem capable of coasting to the first division title in the long-suffering franchise's history, the Pacific leaders might be in danger of entering another slump in their mostly stellar season.

"We want to be playing better," Griffin said. "Concern, I don't know if that's the right word. Frustration, yeah. We're not scared of any team we have to face in the playoffs, but we do need to be executing better to be able to impose our will and our game on other teams. ... It's disappointing we didn't play as well as we should have, but this game meant more to them, and that's the way they played. They played hungrier."

The Clippers' impressive depth has been thinned by minor injuries recently. Los Angeles played without starting forward Caron Butler, who's out with a strained left elbow, and backup point guard Eric Bledsoe, who has a strained calf. Although Jamal Crawford returned from a two-game absence with a sore left ankle, he scored just two points against Memphis on 1-for-10 shooting.

Memphis jumped to an 11-point lead in the third quarter with a rally led by Gasol, who had 11 points and three steals in the period. Los Angeles got within three points with 7 minutes to play, but Quincy Pondexter's 3-pointer kick-started Memphis' final rally.

NOTES: After a day off, Memphis finishes its four-game trip in Utah and Denver. ... Along with his playmaking prowess, Paul scored his 10,000th career point on a jumper early in the second quarter, getting a standing ovation from the sellout crowd when the milestone was announced. But the All-Star point guard managed just six points in the second half. ... Unbeaten WBO welterweight champion Timothy Bradley watched the game in a Clippers jersey. The Palm Springs-area native defends his belt Saturday night in nearby Carson against Ruslan Provodnikov.

THE FACTS: The Memphis Grizzlies came and went in a blur Wednesday night at Staples Center. They beat the Clippers to nearly every loose ball, dominated the paint and showed their Western Conference rivals who should be considered the third-best team, outworking the short-handed Clippers for a 96-85 victory, their 14th win in the last 15 games.

QUOTABLE: "We've been executing really well. We've been moving the ball very well, playing well together, and attacking."

THE STAT: The Grizzlies (44-19) tied their franchise record with their 19th road victory of the season, a mark that has been reached three previous seasons. Memphis, which has 11 road games remaining, has never posted a winning road record in franchise history.

TURNING POINT: Memphis took the lead for good thanks to a 14-2 run that bridged the final minute of the first half and the first three minutes of the second, putting the Grizzlies on top, 63-54. The Clippers (45-21) made a few runs, the final coming on five straight points by Chauncey Billups. That spree pulled them within three with 7:18 remaining in the game, but Quincy Pondexter answered with his 3rd 3-pointer without a miss and Tony Allen tipped in a Memphis miss to push the lead back to 86-78 with 6:20 remaining. The Clippers never got closer than six down the stretch.

HOT: The Grizzlies shot 54.4 percent from the floor, and it was Tayshaun Prince and Marc Gasol who did most of the damage. Gasol shot 10-for-14 and scored a team-high 21 points. He was most effective in the third quarter, when he shot 5-for-6 and scored 11 of his team's 21 points. Prince, who grew up in the L.A. area, made his first five shots, all in the first 6 ½ minutes, before finishing with 18 points. That matched his highest scoring game since he was traded to the Grizzlies at the end of January.

NOT: Clippers backup guard Jamal Crawford returned after missing the previous two games with a sore left ankle but, apparently, left his shot in the trainer's room. He finished 1-for-10 from the field and scored two points, his lowest scoring and worst-shooting game of the season. He wasn't entirely alone. Matt Barnes got the start at forward because Caron Butler is expected to be out another week with a left elbow sprain, and he shot 5-for-15, including 2-for-9 from 3-point range. Barnes made all five of his attempts from beyond the arc in Sunday's victory against the Pistons. Chris Paul also had an uncharacteristic five turnovers for L.A.

QUOTABLE II: "You're not always going to shoot the ball well. There are other things you can do in a game."

GOOD MOVE: The decision to trade Rudy Gay to the Raptors at the trade deadline continues to look like the move of the season. The Grizzlies are 15-4 since they traded their leading scorer. The Raptors, meanwhile, have lost seven of their last nine.

BAD MOVE: Gasol usually has his way with Clippers center DeAndre Jordan. Perhaps that's why the L.A. big man played just 20 minutes, scoring four points and taking two rebounds. But he probably would've had a better chance trying to defend Gasol than Jordan's replacement, Lamar Odom, who's an inch shorter and about 35 pounds lighter. Odom played 29 minutes, finishing with seven points and nine rebounds.

QUOTABLE III: "It's going to take more energy and more production from all of us. One of my old coaches used to always tell me and another player, 'You're pretty good as is, but I'm going to need you to be one percent better.'"

NOTABLE: The Clippers are now a half-game behind the Grizzlies for third place and just a game ahead of fifth-place Denver, which has won 10 in a row. ... Clippers backup point guard Eric Bledsoe missed his second straight game with a sore calf. ... Paul scored a team-high 27 points to surpass 10,000 for his career. He's the 57th active NBA player to reach that plateau, and the sixth overall to reach 10,000 points and 5,000 assists by the end of his eighth season. He joined Oscar Robertson, Magic Johnson, Kevin Johnson, Tim Hardaway, Isiah Thomas and Norm Nixon.
