Hornets-Nets Preview

Two weeks ago, the Brooklyn Nets defeated the last-place New Orleans Hornets thanks in large part to a clutch performance from Deron Williams.

Improved defensive play may be the key this time.

While Williams looks to continue his impressive stretch, coach P.J. Carlesimo wants better defense from his team as the Nets attempt to re-establish their momentum Tuesday night against the Hornets.

Brooklyn (37-27) won 101-97 at New Orleans on Feb. 26, when Williams scored the team's final 11 points of the game to finish with 33.

The Nets failed to capitalize on another impressive outing for Williams on Monday, wasting his 27 points, 13 assists and six rebounds in a 106-97 defeat at Philadelphia that ended their three-game winning streak.

"It's just another number," Williams said of reaching 10,000 career points. "I'm more worried about the loss than the record or anything like that."

Carlesimo's concerns are more specifically centered on Brooklyn allowing the 76ers to shoot 52.6 percent from the floor - 8 for 15 from behind the arc. The Nets gave up an average of 78.7 points on 38.2 percent shooting - 22.6 from long range - over the previous three games.

"I'm way more concerned with our defense than our offense right now," Carlesimo said. "We weren't good offensively, but 97 points on the road should be enough to win a game."

An improved effort may be just what the Nets need to gain ground in the Atlantic Division race since they soon embark on a season-high eight-game road trip with the circus taking over Barclays Center. On Sunday, they host Atlanta - whom they beat 93-80 on the road last Saturday - after facing the Hornets (22-42), occupants of the Southwest Division cellar.

Williams could be the difference again since he's averaging 25.1 points while connecting on 50.0 percent of his attempts from beyond the arc (30 for 60) over the last eight games.

The Hornets enter this three-game road trip looking for their third win in 11 games as the visitor. However, they're coming off a 98-96 home win over Portland, ending a three-game overall losing streak that included two defeats after squandering late double-digit leads.

"We're learning and this was a big step for us," forward Ryan Anderson said. "We could have lost this game, too, in a similar way in the fourth quarter. We proved that we can kind of be resilient and hold on."

Anderson was a big reason for that, coming through with 20 points and 13 boards while hitting 4 of 9 from long range against the Trail Blazers.

He leads the team with 16.7 points per game, but was held to 13 against the Nets last month.

Anthony Davis had six points and four rebounds in that meeting, but left in the third quarter with a left shoulder injury that sidelined him for two games. He's averaging 17.0 points and 12.3 boards in four games since returning.

Brook Lopez helps Nets beat Hornets, 108-98

NEW YORK (AP) Having Brook Lopez and Andray Blatche on the floor at the same time worked in a big way for the Nets.

Brooklyn's big men combined for 44 points in a 108-98 victory over the New Orleans Hornets on Tuesday night.

Lopez led all scorers with 26 points and enjoyed sharing the floor with Blatche, who scored 12 of his 18 points in the second quarter.

"He has such a high basketball IQ," said Lopez, "and he plays so well with everyone on the floor, which makes everyone's job a lot easier."

Nets interim coach P.J. Carlesimo said the Lopez-Blatche tandem works well with specific match-ups, and considering Brooklyn needed an offensive jolt after Monday's dismal loss to lowly Philadelphia, the plan worked.

"Andray makes the game easier for me," said Lopez, who went on a 10-point scoring run himself in the third quarter to preserve a dwindling lead. "You see Andray playing out there like that, I want him to play the entire game then. The great thing about our bigs, there are a lot of good players there who can do different things, so we can have a lot of combinations."

Lopez had a monstrous dunk over his twin brother, Robin, with 3:49 left in the third quarter. It's something the Lopez family will be talking about for years. Robin finished with 15 points and eight rebounds.

"I am not going to talk to him," Brook Lopez joked after the game, mentioning that Robin has dunked on him before as well. "I will expect the rest of my family to talk trash to him."

At one point in the second half, Brook stood over Robin after he took a charge and fell to the floor. At that point, it was just basketball, not brotherly love, as Brook didn't lend a hand. He said afterward he wouldn't do that for any other opposing player.

Al-Farouq Aminu gave Hornets fans their biggest adrenaline rush of the game when he slammed an alley-oop from Greivis Vasquez down with authority and moved the Hornets within striking distance, trailing just 64-61 in the third.

The Hornets eventually tied it at 78 on a 3-pointer by Roger Mason Jr. with 20 seconds left in the third quarter. Blatche made a layup as time expired to give the Nets back the lead at 80-78.

"We're never out of it," said Anthony Davis, who had 17 points and team-high 11 rebounds for New Orleans. "Any time we're down we always give ourselves a chance to fight back. We have to come out from the beginning and go."

MarShon Brooks added 14 points for the Nets, who opened the fourth quarter with a 12-3 run.

Deron Williams had 21 points and 13 assists, continuing his strong play since the All-Star break.

"He's got pretty close to free reign," Carlesimo said. "He's managing the game very well. He's also being a lot more vocal at practices, at timeouts and before and after games. It's a good thing."

In the first half, Brooklyn had an easier time controlling the game's tempo, making scoring runs of 13-2 and 15-4, respectively.

Joe Johnson, who scored 20 points in the loss against Philadelphia, missed his fourth game of the season with a nagging bruised left heel. The Nets don't play again until hosting Eastern Conference rival Atlanta on Sunday.

"It's not that we're not that good or banged up," Carlesimo said. "You have to come and perform every night. We disappointed ourselves (against Philly).

"The four days' rest are really big, not just for Joe, they're big for all our guys. Try and get some legs and health back and maybe a little less sore."

Eric Gordon led New Orleans with 24 points. Robin Lopez had 15 points for the Hornets, who played without leading scorer Ryan Anderson because of the flu.

Reggie Evans had 13 rebounds for Brooklyn, which won for the fourth time in five games and pulled within 2 1/2 games of the first-place New York Knicks in the Atlantic Division.

New Orleans has lost six out of its last eight games, including a 101-97 defeat to Brooklyn on Feb. 26 at home.

NOTES: Carlesimo is 24-13 as interim head coach of the Nets and is tied for the best start for a coach in franchise history with Lawrence Frank (2003-04). . Nets guard Deron Williams was presented with a ring from USA Basketball for his help in winning a Gold Medal with Team USA men's basketball at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. . The Hornets will travel to play Washington on Friday.

THE FACTS: The Nets used a strong fourth quarter to bounce back from Monday's dispiriting loss in Philadelphia and down the Hornets, 108-98, at Barclays Center. Deron Williams, who continues to look healthier with each passing day, led the Nets' perimeter attack and dictated the game's pace and flow for stretches. Williams finished with 21 points and 13 assists. Brook Lopez (26 points, 5 rebounds) and Andray Blatche (20 points, 5 rebounds) both turned in impressive performances. Anthony Davis (17 points, 11 rebounds) and Robin Lopez (15 points, 8 rebounds) featured for the Hornets before the Nets took full control of the game.

QUOTABLE: "I keep saying we're day-to-day. Everybody in the league is the same way. You have to come and you have to perform every night. We disappointed ourselves last night. Had we found a way to win last night, then today would have been the one that would have been hard for us to maintain the energy and do it. I like where we're at."

THE STAT: The Nets shot 16 more free throws than the Hornets (31-15) and shot 16 free throws in the fourth quarter.

TURNING POINT: Up 2, the Nets started the fourth quarter on a 10-3 run, a sequence that began with a 3-point play from MarShon Brooks.

QUOTABLE II: "It's free rain for them after that. All they just have to do is just take it to the basket every time and just be aggressive and they did that."

ROOKIE WATCH: Davis, the number one overall pick, excited the Brooklyn crowd by finishing well around the rim, making good use of his explosive athleticism, and fighting in the paint for rebounds.

NOTABLE: Both teams were missing key starters. On the fourth game in five nights, Joe Johnson, who has battled a sore left heel, sat out. And the Hornets' Ryan Anderson didn't play due to an illness. ... Brook Lopez won his second consecutive game against his twin brother Robin. Both players were able to score on one another with patented moves; Brook, with high-arcing stepback fadeaways and Robin with a jump hook in the lane. But Brook had the biggest moment in the brother battle, throwing down a vicious dunk over Robin to give the Nets a 75-62 lead. ... A day after Gerald Wallace did not play in the fourth quarter, Reggie Evans sat the game's final 16:43. Wallace explained that with two opposing 7-footers (Robin Lopez, Davis) on the floor, Carlesimo needed to go with bigger players.
