Celtics-Bobcats Preview

The Boston Celtics have thrived with star point guard Rajon Rondo sidelined and are in contention for one of the top four playoff spots in the Eastern Conference. Surprisingly, one of the few teams they couldn't beat without him were the NBA-worst Charlotte Bobcats.

Boston visits Charlotte on Tuesday night looking to avenge its loss there last month as it tries to get back on track after its five-game winning streak was snapped.

The Celtics (34-28) lost 91-79 at Oklahoma City on Sunday, but they're 14-5 since Rondo's season came to an end because of a torn ACL. Boston is in sixth place in the East and within striking distance of the fourth seed.

"We're showing that we can compete against pretty much anyone, but we have to bring our A-game most of the time, and that involves not turning the ball over and not fouling as much," said forward Paul Pierce, who scored a team-high 20 points.

Jeff Green's improved production has helped matters, as the reserve forward has averaged 14.3 points in the last 19 games after scoring 9.6 per contest in his first 43.

Rondo's absence is still glaring at times, however, such as in Sunday's defeat. Boston shot 25.0 percent in the second half, scoring 34 points, and committed 19 turnovers overall.

"We were bad all game offensively," coach Doc Rivers said. "We were forcing things and offensively the ball stuck at times."

That seemed to also be the case Feb. 11, when the Celtics shot 41.6 percent and lost 94-91 at Charlotte. Byron Mullens scored 25 points and collected a season-high 18 rebounds for the Bobcats.

Charlotte (7-24) has gone 1-11 since that win and is in the midst of a 10-game losing streak. Mullens has played less than 18 minutes in four straight games after averaging 14.2 points in his previous 13 contests.

"There's an overview of what you're trying to do, and when you're not eligible for the playoffs, then it's about development, it's about a system, it's about ... having the attitude that you have something at stake," coach Mike Dunlap said. "These guys are pros, and they understand that. You can't fake it."

Charlotte fell 104-87 to Washington on Saturday despite 29 points from Kemba Walker. He went 11 for 25, but had shot 29.1 percent in his six previous games.

Walker may have a difficult time turning things around Tuesday as he's averaged 12.2 points and 29.5 percent shooting in five games against the Celtics.

Boston won 100-89 over the Bobcats at home Jan. 14 as Pierce scored 19. Walker was 4 of 16 and scored 12 points.

Pierce needs 10 points to pass Charles Barkley for 20th place on the career scoring list with 23,758.

Henderson lifts Bobcats over Celtics 100-74

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) Paul Pierce rested while Gerald Henderson went to work.

Henderson scored a career-high 35 points and Charlotte Bobcats snapped a 10-game losing streak by pounding the lackluster Boston Celtics 100-74 on Tuesday night.

It was Charlotte's biggest margin of victory since beating the Miami Heat 104-65 on Jan. 20, 2010.

"I was just trying to be aggressive from the start and just attack," said Henderson, who was 11 of 19 from the field and knocked down all 12 of his foul shots.

Ben Gordon scored 17 points and new starting forward Josh McRoberts had his first double-double for Charlotte with 13 points and 10 rebounds.

When asked if the Bobcats took Doc Rivers' decision to rest Pierce as a slap in the face, Gordon simply shrugged his shoulders.

"Hopefully he rests when we play them again on Saturday" in Boston, Gordon said. "Tell him to go get more rest."

The Bobcats (14-50) doubled last season's win total.

The Celtics looked every bit like a team that has played nine of its last 11 games on the road.

Kevin Garnett needed nine points to pass Jerry West and move into 15th place on the NBA's career scoring list, but was held to just five on 2-of-10 shooting. Jeff Green and Jordan Crawford each had 14 points for the Celtics, who were outrebounded 48-29 by a Bobcats team not known for its prowess on the glass.

Henderson got off to a fast start, scoring 21 points to help Charlotte to a 49-46 halftime lead.

The fourth-year guard stayed with his biggest strength while playing against Courtney Lee and Jason Terry, driving to the hole and drawing contact. He was 8 of 13 from the field in the first half and made all five of his free-throw attempts.

Henderson also was able to create shots from the low post.

"We got into a groove in the first quarter and just kept it going," he said.

He continued his solid play in the third, knocking down a 3-pointer from the wing and then coming up with a huge effort play to give the Bobcats a double-digit lead. He drove the lane and got blocked, but corralled the rebound after put it back in while drawing a foul.

The Bobcats poured it on in the fourth quarter. Gordon threw an alley-oop pass to McRoberts, who slammed it home with his right hand to give Charlotte a 24-point lead with six minutes remaining.

"Gerald Henderson, I just thought he looked at whoever was guarding him and said, `I am better than you tonight,"' Rivers said. "And he proved that."

Bobcats coach Mike Dunlap was simply happy to put another long losing streak behind him.

"Our guys can sleep soundly tonight," Dunlap said.

The Celtics probably should have been expecting more of a game from the Bobcats after losing in Charlotte earlier in the season.

But Rivers decided to sit the 35-year-old Pierce with Boston in the midst of a difficult part of the schedule. He pondered sitting Pierce, Garnett or Terry while on the flight to Charlotte from Oklahoma City.

He chose Pierce.

Rivers thought the loss was more about his team approaching the game with the wrong mentality than the absence of Pierce.

"They were so much more competitive than us the entire night and I thought it felt like we had a Band-Aid on a dam the first half and then it came off and blew us open," Rivers said.

Despite the loss, Rivers said giving Pierce the night off was the right thing to do.

"Yeah, definitely, otherwise he would have been a part of that," Rivers said. "What I was thinking was that I wish I would have given Kevin a night off too, in the middle of the game. That would have been terrific. Then we would have had two guys that had gotten some rest."

NOTES: The Celtics and Bobcats play again Saturday night in Boston. ... Bobcats center Byron Mullens, who has been benched for McRoberts, played only 11 minutes before leaving with a strained back.

THE FACTS: Gerald Henderson scored a career-high 35 points and the Charlotte Bobcats snapped a 10-game losing streak Tuesday night with a 100-74 win over the short-handed Boston Celtics at Time Warner Cable Arena. Boston played without star forward Paul Pierce, who was held out of the game by coach Doc Rivers in order to rest for the stretch run.

QUOTABLE: "It feels good to win again. We work hard every day to get a win out here. It's just extra special to do it with a career night. We played hard out there and it paid off."

THE STAT: The Bobcats snapped a 10-game losing streak which featured six losses by 20 or more points, three losses by 30 or more points and an average margin of defeat of 21.5 points. It was the second losing streak of 10 or more games this season for the Bobcats who are now 2-11 in their last 13 games. The only two wins in that stretch were over the Celtics in Charlotte. It's the largest Bobcats win since a 39-point win over Miami on Jan. 20, 2010 and only its second 20-point win since March 2011. The two teams meet again Saturday night in Boston.

TURNING POINT: Josh McRoberts opened the second half with a tip-in and opened the flood gates for Charlotte. The Bobcats started the second half on a 12-3 run which was capped by a Michael Kidd-Gilchrist jumper and a Rivers timeout. Charlotte built what was at the time its largest lead at 12 points and never looked back. The Celtics got within six midway through the third, but would never seriously challenge the rest of the way.

QUOTABLE II: "We approached the game with the wrong mentality. We laid an egg. We could never get it started. They played really hard. We just couldn't match how hard they played tonight for whatever reason. That's on me. That's disappointing that I couldn't get that out of our guys. They were clearly so much more competitive than us the entire night.

HOT: Henderson had a career night Tuesday for the Bobcats. Henderson set a personal best with 35 points. He made 11 of his 19 field goal attempts which included one 3-pointer. He was a perfect 12-for-12 from the free throw line and added two rebounds, three assists and one blocked shot. He's averaging 24.3 over his last three games.

NOT: While Boston rested Pierce they did have Kevin Garnett in the starting lineup. Garnett, however, struggled against Charlotte and proved to be ineffective. He finished the night with five points on 2-for-10 shooting and two rebounds in almost 21 minutes of action.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Ben Gordon has climbed back into the rotation with the injury to Ramon Sessions and played well over the last five games. Gordon scored 17 points in the win over Boston with three baskets from behind the arc. He has been in double figures in each of the last five and is averaging 15.8 points and two made three pointers in that span.

INSIDE THE ARENA: Charlottean David Guthrie was a member of the three-man officiating crew. Crowd favorite and former Celtic player Brian Scalabrine was on the microphone providing commentary for Boston.

GOOD MOVE: Starting McRoberts proved to be a good move from Charlotte coach Mike Dunlap. McRoberts had his first double-double as a Bobcat with a 13-point, 10-rebound night. His 13 points were a season-high.

BAD MOVE: The Celtics struggled with Pierce out of uniform Tuesday. Rivers chose to rest the aging veteran in preparation for a stretch run to close out the NBA season, but his move didn't pay off as the Celtics weren't able to maintain a high level of play without the All-Star in the lineup.

ROOKIE WATCH: Kidd-Gilchrist finished the night with nine points and eight rebounds and added two assists and two blocks. Fellow rookie Jeffery Taylor played just five minutes, but had three points. Boston rookies Jared Sullinger and Fab Melo were both inactive Tuesday.

NOTABLE: The Bobcats, according to a report from Rick Bonnell with The Charlotte Observer, are set to sign Jannero Pargo to a 10-day contract to help provide depth at the point guard position. Pargo was most recently with the Atlanta Hawks, playing in seven games this season, and the Bobcats will be his eighth team during his nine-year NBA career. ... Boston's 74 points marked a season low for a Bobcats opponent. ... Kemba Walker scored in double figures for the 11th time in the last 12 games and the 57th time this season. ... Jordan Crawford scored 14 points, recording his highest point total since joining the Celtics on Feb. 21. ... Jeff Green, who replaced Pierce in the staring lineup, scored in double-digits for the 35th time this season and tied for the team lead with 14 points. ... Garnett has 25,189 points and needs just four more to pass Jerry West for 15th on the NBA's all-time scoring list.
