It's safe to say the New York Knicks will focus Monday night's game plan on defending Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry.

They hope to be boosted offensively by the return of Carmelo Anthony.

Anthony's status is in doubt for the visiting Knicks as these teams meet for the first time since Curry's amazing performance last month.

New York (38-22) won 109-105 at home over Golden State (35-29) on Feb. 27, overcoming Curry's NBA season-high 54 points. The Knicks admitted everything they tried didn't work on Curry, who made 18 of 28 shots and finished one shy of the league record with 11 3-pointers on 13 attempts.

"We ran everything at him," center Tyson Chandler said after that game. "He just got hot. There was some shots that he couldn't have seen the rim."

Anthony scored 35 in that contest, but he's missed the last three games with knee problems. It's unclear when the Eastern Conference's top scorer will return as the Knicks begin a five-game West trip.

New York will continue to play without Amare Stoudemire, who needs surgery on his right knee and is expected to miss six weeks. Stoudemire returned on New Year's Day after missing the first 30 games due to another knee surgery, and has averaged 14.2 points in 29 contests as a reserve.

The Knicks played without Anthony and Stoudemire in Saturday's 113-84 home win over Utah.

"It helps because we did play without Amare but we would love to have Amare back. We know that," guard Jason Kidd said. "The big thing for us is we get Melo back coming up and then we go on the West Coast trip and try to come back with a positive record."

The Warriors are hopeful that David Lee will return Monday. Lee, who leads the NBA with 41 double-doubles, sat out Saturday's 103-93 home loss to Milwaukee with a bruised right knee.

Lee, who played his first five seasons with the Knicks, missed the last meeting with his former club due to a suspension.

Curry wasn't the only player who turned in a personal-best effort that night. Chandler had 16 points and a career-high 28 rebounds for the Knicks.

The big man has helped New York limit opponents to 85.3 points per game while going 2-1 in this stretch without Anthony, holding the Jazz to 38.5 percent shooting. J.R. Smith is averaging 26.7 points in that span.

"Defensively, we're just scraping and scratching," coach Mike Woodson said. "Our assignments (Saturday) were pretty much right on the money and that's something where we've had slippage in the past."

The Warriors, meanwhile, have dropped 12 of 17 - losing back-to-back home games for the first time all season over the weekend - as they bid to reach the playoffs for the first time in six seasons.

"I believe in my guys," coach Mark Jackson said. "We'll be fine, but we have to respond."

Curry is shooting only 39.8 percent since his historic performance. He's averaging 17.7 points on 36.0 percent shooting in his last three games.

"We're just not showing up right now," he said. "Individually everyone has to step up and just play better."

Warriors whip Knicks 92-63 behind Curry, Lee

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) By the time Mark Jackson walked off the floor and into the Golden State Warriors' locker room late Monday night, the coach already had a text message from his mother, Marie, who watched her son's win against the Knicks on national television from the family's New York home.

"Way to get them back," she wrote.

From the Bay Area to the Big Apple, Jackson's new team sure sent a message.

Stephen Curry scored 26 points, David Lee had 21 and the Warriors routed the Knicks 92-63 on Monday night for their most lopsided win of the season.

It was the best defensive performance for the franchise since the Philadelphia Warriors beat the Milwaukee Hawks 69-63 on Dec. 28, 1953.

"That's a heck of a defensive night," Jackson said. "It takes a combination of great defense and, at times, bad offense. I wish we could take all the credit."

Almost two weeks after his 54-point masterpiece at Madison Square Garden, Curry shared the spotlight with his co-captain in front of a sellout crowd announced at 19,596. He was 4 for 7 from 3-point range, while Lee finished with 10 rebounds and eight assists after helping the Warriors go ahead by 27 points in the third quarter.

"It didn't matter how we won. We just needed a win," Curry said after Golden State snapped a two-game skid. "This was an important win for us. I'm glad we got the win, especially with the way it ended last time in New York."

Carmelo Anthony had 14 points and 10 rebounds after missing New York's previous three games because of a nagging right knee, and J.R. Smith scored nine points before he was ejected in the third quarter for a flagrant foul. Anthony was 4 for 15 from the floor as the Knicks shot 27 percent in the opener of a five-game West Coast trip.

It was the lowest scoring output for the Knicks this season. It also was the lowest shooting percentage of the season for any NBA team, according to the Warriors.

"This is definitely not the way you want to start a road trip," said Knicks center Tyson Chandler, who had four points and eight rebounds.

New York withstood Curry's career high in points in that memorable 109-105 win over the Warriors on Feb. 27. Curry received some help for the rematch - from a familiar Knicks face.

Lee served a one-game suspension during that game in New York for his role in a scrum against Indiana and also missed Saturday's loss against Milwaukee because of a bruised right knee. He wore a white wrap around the knee against his former team but showed no major limitations.

Curry made his first three 3-pointers and had 11 points in the first 6:14 of the game. He helped the Warriors take a 23-14 lead that incensed Knicks coach Mike Woodson.

"Our pace was way out in left field somewhere," Woodson said.

After scoring only four points in the first quarter of his 54-point performance, Curry appeared on his way to another big night. New York briefly began trapping Curry off pick-and-rolls, and everybody from Anthony to Chandler chased the diminutive guard all over the perimeter.

Curry still confused the Knicks more often than not, getting them to switch or go underneath screens for no apparent reason. He missed his last two shots in the quarter before coming on strong again in the second, hitting a pull-up 3 over Raymond Felton and finding Klay Thompson for another 3 during a 23-7 run that put the Warriors ahead 49-32.

Curry, Thompson (23 points) and Lee outscored New York by themselves. And Curry and Thompson had almost as many made field goals (nine apiece) as the Knicks had as a team (20).

"We just needed a win, period," Lee said. "Not because we'd lost two in a row, just because at this point, every game becomes really important."

New York struggled in large part because its leading scorer did, too.

Anthony opened the game 2 of 10 from the floor and showed little of his usual burst or bruising style. He also took several contested or difficult jumpers, especially once the Warriors took control.

Anthony said his knee is not causing pain, just "irritation."

"I didn't really know how it was going to respond," he said. "It was just nagging, just agitating at this point. The stiffness is still back there so it's just a matter of time and seeing what happens over time."

With Curry commanding so much of the attention, Lee led the way in the third quarter. He had a putback layup and a fast-break dunk during a 17-3 spurt that put the game away.

Smith, who started the second half, capped Golden State's run with a flagrant-2 foul for coming down hard with two hands on Harrison Barnes' layup attempt, swiping the rookie's head. Barnes made 1 of 2 free throws, and Thompson hit another jumper that gave Golden State a 67-40 lead.

Smith protested the video review by lead official Joe Crawford, then jogged off the court as Warriors fans peppered him with jeers. A few minutes later, Woodson pulled Anthony out, though he returned for a few minutes midway through the fourth with New York down 20.

NOTES: Golden State's most lopsided win of the season was a 115-93 victory at Atlanta on Dec. 15. ... The Knicks announced that Amare Stoudemire had surgery on his right knee. He's expected to miss six weeks. ... Knicks reserve F Rasheed Wallace traveled with the team and will do his rehabilitation on the road. Wallace walked around the arena on crutches. Woodson said Wallace is still trying to return in the playoffs.

THE FACTS: David Lee returned from a one-game injury absence to deliver 21 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists in the Golden State Warriors' 92-63 victory Monday against a New York Knicks team that scored fewer points than any Warriors opponent in nearly six decades.

The Knicks' 63 points matches the lowest total allowed by the Warriors (36-29) since the Philadelphia incarnation of the franchise beat the Milwaukee Hawks 69-63 on Dec. 28, 1953. Stephen Curry, who rained a career-high 54 points on the Knicks (38-23) last month at Madison Square Garden was held, loosely speaking, to 26 points and six rebounds this time. Klay Thompson added 23 points and five boards as the Warriors' backcourt combined for 10 3-pointers. That was double the output of the Knicks' entire roster. New York shot 27.4 percent from the floor, the franchise's worst mark in at least 28 seasons.

Knicks star Carmelo Anthony played after resting his sore right knee for three games and was noticeably slowed in a 14-point, 10-rebound night.

QUOTABLE: "That's a heck of a defensive night. I don't know how many teams in history have nights like that. It takes a combination of great defense and also, at times, bad offense. THE STAT: New York came in averaging the second-most 3-pointers made per game (10.83), just 0.01 behind league-leading Houston. And the Warriors allowed a combined 28 treys in their last two games, losses to the Rockets and Bucks. Yet the Knicks still went a wretched 5-for-27 (18.5 percent) from behind the arc.

TURNING POINT: This one was over early, thanks to the Warriors' 17-4 run midway through the second quarter. That stretch -- powered by six points from Curry and four points with two assists by Lee -- sapped any drama from the evening, unless you count Lee's futile pursuit of a fourth career triple-double.

QUOTABLE II: "Get used to us. We're not going anywhere."

HOT: Curry had 11 points in the first 6:14, sowing panic in the Knicks' defense and forcing New York to try desperate double-teams. That just opened up more space for other Warriors to operate the rest of the night.

NOT: The Knicks' shooting simply flat-lined during the second quarter, with no hopes of resuscitation; they were 2-for-7 in the lane and 2-for-15 outside the paint.

QUOTABLE III: "The ball got stuck a lot. We didn't have much ball movement. We didn't have too many guys get into a rhythm. We had to force shots tonight and we missed them."

GOOD MOVE: With the Knicks attempting to trap along the perimeter as much as possible, the Warriors smoothly transitioned to Plan B, which was to cast Lee in a more focal role. The former Knicks All-Star responded with nine points and three assists while playing the entire second quarter.

BAD MOVE: Woodson tried to inject life in his second-half lineup by starting J.R. Smith over James White, but it backfired when the Knicks' Sixth Man of the Year candidate was ejected less than six minutes into the third quarter. Smith voiced his displeasure multiple times in the first half after failing to be rewarded with foul calls on his drives, so it was hardly a shock when he came down hard with both arms to deliver a foul on Warriors rookie Harrison Barnes with 6:51 remaining in the third. A flagrant foul was called immediately, and crew chief Joey Crawford jumped it to a level-2 infraction upon watching the replay, leading to Smith's ejection. He finished with nine points on 3-for-11 shooting.

RISKY MOVE: With Anthony having not played in a week, putting him back on the floor with 9:18 to go and the Knicks down 20 seemed like a questionable long-term tactical move. Woodson nevertheless did it, and it failed to move the needle in the short-term; the Knicks trailed by 24 when Anthony checked out for good at the 5:25 mark.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: If the Knicks had a bright spot, it would be Chris Copeland, who at least brought some activity to the floor: 15 points, six rebounds, five fouls and four turnovers in 19 minutes.

ROOKIE WATCH: Warriors center Festus Ezeli notched 10 rebounds in 15 minutes.

NOTABLE: This was the Warriors' largest margin of victory this season. . . . Garbage time was truly an accurate descriptor for this fourth quarter, when the teams combined for just 26 points (Golden State outscored New York 17-9). . . . The Knicks' shooting percentage was the lowest allowed by the Warriors since holding Washington to 26.9 percent on Nov. 22, 1975.
