Although Jeff Green has gone through some trying times since arriving in Boston, he appears to be in a very good place ahead of his return to Oklahoma City.

The Celtics are also feeling great following five straight victories, but they'll face a major challenge keeping that run going Sunday against a Thunder team that's within striking distance of the top spot in the Western Conference.

Green will finally make his first appearance in Oklahoma City since the Thunder traded him to the Celtics in the Kendrick Perkins deal Feb. 24, 2011. The forward missed all of last season following open heart surgery to address an aortic aneurysm.

He has returned to make a strong contribution for Boston (34-27) in 2012-13, playing especially well during the Celtics' recent surge. Green is averaging 14.7 points on 50.5 percent shooting during a 14-4 stretch - coinciding with the absence of injured point guard Rajon Rondo - that has put the team in the hunt for a top-four seed in the East.

Green had the game-winning layup late in Wednesday's 83-81 victory at Indiana, and his 3-pointer in overtime helped Boston beat Atlanta 107-102 on Friday.

"We just continue to fight. In the stretch run of the season, every game is crucial," said Paul Pierce, who had 27 points, seven assists and seven rebounds against the Hawks. "Between the fourth and eighth spot, it's a difference between one or two games, so all these games are big and we understand the sense of urgency."

Oklahoma City (46-16) is chasing San Antonio for the No. 1 seed in the West. If the Thunder win this game, they would have a chance to pull even with the Spurs with a victory Monday night in San Antonio.

They've won four straight and seven of eight, and they had a chance to get their stars some rest during Friday's 116-94 rout at Charlotte. No Thunder player logged more than 25 minutes as the team built a 29-point lead and cruised.

That was especially crucial after Oklahoma City went down to the wire in a 95-94 win at New York the previous night.

"It's good to get some rest," Kevin Durant said. "That's good to get you re-energized for the next game. But it's also good that we have such a deep team."

The Thunder will be looking to avenge a 108-100 loss in Boston on Nov. 23, when Pierce had 27 points and Green added 17 in his first-ever game against Oklahoma City.

Jason Terry scored 16 on 6-of-8 shooting for the Celtics that night. He's averaging 18.2 points on 50.0 percent shooting in his last six games against the Thunder, the first five with Dallas.

Terry has had a somewhat uneven first season in Boston, but he came up big Friday with 19 points - including the go-ahead 3-pointer with 35 seconds left in overtime.

"We count on him late in games," Pierce said. "Even if he doesn't get the shot, he's such a threat late in games that you can't come off of him. He's hit so many big shots throughout his career. He understands the moment and that's why he's here."

Durant has hit 58 of 60 free-throw attempts in his last six games against Boston, averaging 32.0 points in that stretch and scoring at least 28 in each game. Russell Westbrook, though, led the Thunder with 31 in their 119-104 home win over Boston last season, the Celtics' first road loss in this series since a 2006 defeat in Seattle.

Thunder grind out 91-79 win over Celtics

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) In a reunion with his former Boston teammates, Kendrick Perkins and the Oklahoma City Thunder got just the kind of victory he enjoys most.

Kevin Durant had 23 points and 11 rebounds, Russell Westbrook scored 15 points and Thunder beat the Celtics 91-79 on Sunday to stretch their winning streak to five games.

Boston was able to slow the Thunder from their best-in-the-NBA scoring pace of 107 points per game, but Oklahoma City's lowest output since Jan. 13 was still enough to come out ahead in this one.

"I told the guys coming into this game that it's going to be one of those low-scoring games, one of those nights that we have to grind out, so that's what we did," said Perkins, who won the 2008 NBA title with Boston. "Every night, we can't go out and expect to put up 100 points and the score to be 120-100. Some nights, it's going to be like this."

The Thunder limited Boston to 25 percent shooting in the second half after the Celtics shot 51 percent in the first. Boston dropped off to 33 percent in the third quarter and all the way down to 18 percent in the fourth, when the game got away.

"We were bad all game offensively," coach Doc Rivers said. "We were forcing things and offensively the ball stuck at times. Their length bothered us at times. Sometimes you want to win too bad, and that was us today."

Oklahoma City used an 11-2 run at the start of the fourth quarter to close it out. The Celtics had pulled within 68-65 after three quarters before going without a basket for the first 5 minutes of the fourth, and they never could recover.

Paul Pierce had 20 points to lead Boston, which had its own run of five straight wins broken. Kevin Garnett chipped in 10 points and 11 rebounds.

The Celtics finished at 38 percent shooting for the game with 19 turnovers, more than four above their average, while falling to 14-5 since All-Star Rajon Rondo's season-ending knee injury.

"We're showing that we can compete against pretty much anyone, but we have to bring our A-game most of the time, and that involves not turning the ball over and not fouling as much," said Pierce, who needs 10 points to pass Charles Barkley for 20th on the NBA's career scoring list.

It was the third-lowest scoring total of the season for Oklahoma City, which had 84 in its season-opening loss at San Antonio and 87 in a win at Portland in January. Boston even managed to outscore the youthful Thunder 11-8 on the fast break, but that slower pace still wasn't effective.

"This is what I like being a part of. All of that up and down fast pace, I kind of like the `slow down, let's bump a little bit' type of game," Perkins said. "Either way, it's all good."

Jeff Green had a right-handed, reverse dunk as Boston closed the third quarter with six straight points and get within three. But the Thunder answered right back to start the fourth.

Backup point guard Reggie Jackson, who played at Boston College, got a running flip to go in and followed that with a double-clutch jumper from the right wing at the shot-clock buzzer.

When Jackson missed a more conventional shot, Nick Collison grabbed the offensive rebound and found a cutting Kevin Martin for a layup that turned into a three-point play and a 79-67 lead with 8:36 remaining.

"I was pretty upset with myself that it even came down to those type of shots, but I'll take them," Jackson said. "I guess I'll take them."

Martin added 12 points off the bench for Oklahoma City, which moved to 28-4 at home. The Thunder finish a run of four games in five days Monday night at San Antonio, with a chance to tie the Spurs - without All-Star point guard Tony Parker - for the best record in the Western Conference.

"It's important, no matter how guys try to look at it," Perkins said. "You always want home court as many playoff series as you can. We are going in there to try to get the win, and it's very important."

Notes: Green got a round of applause when he checked in midway through the first quarter, playing in Oklahoma City for the first time since being traded in February 2011. A few moments later, Jason Terry - a member of Dallas' 2011 championship team that beat the Thunder in the West finals - was booed, and he put his palms up, acknowledging the fans' grudge. ... When 38-year-old Derek Fisher checked in for the first time, Celtics coach Doc Rivers greeted him this way: "No retired players." ... The Celtics signed D.J. White to a second 10-day contract. Fellow reserve Shavlik Randolph is nearing the end of his 10-day deal. "We've had so much change over the last three or four weeks with different guys, I just like the continuity now," Rivers said. "I don't think there's anybody out there that's going to save the world. But both of those guys, I think, can help us in games."

THE FACTS: The Boston Celtics had played suffocating defense in the first three quarters in Oklahoma City but it was the Thunder defense that snuffed out any hope for a Celtic rally in the fourth leading OKC to a 91-79 win.

Kevin Durant led all scorers with 23 points, 11 coming at the free throw line. Russell Westbrook added 15, but had only two assists and one rebound. Thunder sixth man Kevin Martin scored 12 points but he continues to have problems with his shot going just 4-for-12 overall and 0-for-4 on 3-pointers.

The Celtics also had three men in double figures. Boston was led by Paul Pierce who had 20 points but only two of those came in the decisive fourth quarter. Point guard Avery Bradley, filling in for the injured Rajon Rondo, had 12 points on 5-for-10 shooting and five assists. Kevin Garnett picked up another double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Jeff Green, making his first return trip to Oklahoma City since being traded by the Thunder to Boston in 2011, scored eight points on 2-for-8 shooting. He'd scored 17 against his old teammates when the Celtics beat the Thunder in Boston back in November.

Thunder center Kendrick Perkins led OKC in the assist department with five. He also had six points, five rebounds, a block and a steal.

The Thunder held Boston to just 37.7 percent shooting for the game and forced 19 turnovers. Boston had held OKC to 41.7 percent through the third quarter, but the Thunder shot 50 percent (10-for-20) in the fourth.

THE STAT: In the fourth quarter Oklahoma City held the Celtics to just 18.2 percent shooting (4-for-22) and 14 points. For the second half the Celtics were only slightly better shooting 25 percent (10-for-40).

TURNING POINT: An 11-2 Thunder run to open the fourth quarter extended a three point lead out to 12 and gave OKC the cushion it needed to hold off the Celtics the rest of the way.

QUOTABLE II: "I thought our shot selection was awful. We missed some open shots and we got stuck a lot on one side of the floor. We saw matchups that we had advantages on and I give them credit for fighting, but at some point you have to get the ball to the other side and we refused to do that."

HOT: Boston started 9-for-18 (50 percent) and finished the first half 19-for-37 (51.4 percent)...Pierce was 5-for-7 (12 points) in the first half...Martin was 3-for-6 in the second half.

NOT: The Thunder started the game 7-for-21 (33.3 percent) and missed their last seven shots in the first quarter. OKC was also terrible down low in the first 12 minutes (3-for-11)...Westbrook was 2-for-6 (seven points) in the first quarter...Green was 1-for-4 in the first quarter...OKC finished the first half 14-for-35 (40 percent)...Westbrook had no rebounds and no assists in the first half...Martin was 1-for-6 (four points) in the first 24 minutes...Garnett was 1-for-10, Green was 1-for-6, Pierce and Bradley were 1-for-5 in the second half.

INSIDE THE ARENA: The 98th consecutive sell-out inside Chesapeake Energy Arena.

GOOD MOVE: Martin has struggled from the floor lately and he began this game 1-for-4 but on consecutive possessions in the second quarter Martin had a beautiful up and under assist to Nick Collison, grabbed a rebound at the other end of the floor then fed Derek Fisher for a 3-pointer.

GOOD MOVE TOO: OKC loves to run, Boston does not and the Celtics succeeded in keeping the game to a plodding pace through the first two and a half quarters. The Thunder got out in transition only three times in the first 30 minutes.

BAD MOVE: The Thunder had a lot of opportunities in the paint against the Celtics in the first half but OKC blew most of those bunnies going just 6-for-17 (35.3 percent) from the paint in the first 24 minutes.

NOTABLE: Durant has now scored 20 or more points against Boston in eight straight games...KD was 11-for-11 from the free throw line today, that's the sixth time this season he's been perfect from the stripe while shooting at least 10 free throws (leads the NBA)...With the win today the Thunder can tie the Spurs for first place in the Western Conference with a win tomorrow night in San Antonio.
