Timberwolves-Nuggets Preview

The Denver Nuggets are on the verge of securing their longest single-season home win streak in 24 years, and a matchup with a last-place opponent would appear to provide just the opportunity to accomplish that feat.

The Minnesota Timberwolves, though, are one of the few teams to win in Denver this season and will seek another victory there Saturday night while trying to record their first win streak in three months.

Denver (41-22) hasn't won 13 straight at home in one season since a 19-game run Jan. 28-April 20, 1989. It moved a step closer with its seventh consecutive overall victory Thursday, 107-92 over the Los Angeles Clippers.

Ty Lawson, averaging 23.6 points in his last 12 games, led seven players in double figures with 21, and Danilo Gallinari had 20 as the Nuggets improved to 27-3 on their own floor.

The Nuggets' surge has put them within striking distance of fourth place in the Western Conference and home-court advantage for the opening round of the playoffs. Coach George Karl, though, wants his team to keep a simple focus.

"We've got to stay focused on (19) games of pretty serious playoff intensity and not get hung up on a loss or a winning streak," Karl told the team's official website. "We need to get hung up on getting better. Wherever we fall, if it's third, fourth, fifth, or sixth ... just know we fought the 82-game marathon, ran that as hard as we could and got better as it went on."

Karl would first probably like to see an improved performance from his team when facing Minnesota. After losing 101-94 at home Nov. 21, The Timberwolves have won the past two meetings, including 101-97 in Denver on Jan. 3. Before that win, the Timberwolves had dropped five in a row and 14 of 18 at the Pepsi Center.

J.J. Barea scored 12 of his 17 points in the fourth quarter after Kevin Love was forced to the bench with an injury. That turned out to be another fracture in his right hand, which has since kept Love off the court.

With its star forward missing, Minnesota (21-37) has dropped 12 of 13 on the road and 23 of 29 overall, but it snapped a six-game skid with an 87-82 home win over Washington on Wednesday. Barea had 10 of his 12 points in the final period, and Ricky Rubio had 15 points, 11 assists, seven rebounds and a career high-tying six steals.

"They have just been slapped around so much," coach Rick Adelman said. "I think you get to a point where you keep saying the same things, you keep talking about the same things. But you need to get a win."

Minnesota hasn't won back-to-back games since taking a season-high four straight Dec. 7-15, which included a 108-105 home victory over Denver.

The Timberwolves likely won't have Nikola Pekovic (abdominal strain) and Andrei Kirilenko (strained left calf) available for this game. Pekovic had a team-best 22 points and 11 rebounds in December's meeting and Kirilenko scored 18.

Derrick Williams is averaging 20.5 points in his last six games, but he's scored a combined 18 on 6-of-18 shooting in his last three matchups with the Nuggets after tying his career high with 27 points April 11 in Denver.

Gallinari is averaging a team-best 18.3 points on 54.3 percent shooting against Minnesota this season.

Nuggets win 13th in a row at home

DENVER (AP) Nearly unbeatable at home this season, the Denver Nuggets got the better of one of the few teams that has managed to get out of town with a victory.

Ty Lawson matched his season high with 32 points, including 14 in the fourth quarter, and the Nuggets beat the injury-depleted Minnesota Timberwolves 111-88 Saturday night to stretch their home winning streak to 13 games, their longest in 14 years.

"We've all been playing better in the second half of the season and our record is showing that," Lawson said. "The first half of the season, there were worries in management, coaching staff if we were going to make the playoffs, but we've gotten into shape and we've been playing well."

Corey Brewer had 15 points, while Danilo Gallinari and Andre Iguodala added 11 apiece for the Nuggets, who have won eight in a row overall. Fueled by their longest home winning streak since a 19-game run from Jan. 28-April 20, 1989, the Nuggets ran their home record to 28-3, tying the Miami Heat for best in the league.

"We've been looking to play this way since the beginning of the season, and we've been working on it, but I think we still have a lot of room to improve," Gallinari said.

Mickael Gelabale scored 19 points for the Timberwolves, who were without Nikola Pekovic (abdominal strain), Kevin Love (broken hand), Andrei Kirilenko (strained left calf), Brandon Roy (knee surgery), Chase Budinger (knee) and Malcom Lee (knee).

"It gets tough on all of us, especially when you have nine guys and you're going up against a team like this," said Minnesota's Derrick Williams, who finished with 13 points. "It was tough, especially in their building. Their crowd gets behind them and everything starts to snowball, like it did tonight."

J.J. Barea added 15 points for Minnesota, which lost for the seventh time in eight games.

Denver avenged a rare home loss the last time the teams met. The Timberwolves beat the Nuggets 101-97 on Jan. 3 despite losing Love to the hand injury for much of the second half, snapping Denver's eight-game home winning streak at the time.

It was a different story in the rematch.

"We had a lot less people on the court, and more injuries," Williams said. "But they started pushing at us. I think that was part of their game plan. They saw we were kind of short-handed and their transition game is the best in the league. They started transitioning on us and it really takes a toll on you."

After a basket by Williams tied the score at 57-all, the Nuggets put together a 14-2 run that included 3-pointers by Gallinari and Lawson to go in front 71-59 with 5:02 remaining in the third quarter.

Ricky Rubio and Greg Stiemsma hit successive baskets to get the Timberwolves within nine, but the Nuggets produced another surge to take an 83-70 lead into the fourth quarter. JaVale McGee had three dunks in the stretch for Denver, including a breakaway slam after stealing the ball from Rubio near midcourt.

With Lawson leading the Nuggets' relentless transition game, Denver extended its lead in the fourth to finish with a 23-point margin.

"The first half, we played terrible and Coach let us know," Lawson said. "We regrouped at halftime. We knew it was a trap game. They beat us last time on a trap game, so we didn't want history to repeat itself."

Trailing 48-41, Minnesota scored eight straight points, starting with a jumper by Stiemsma, to go in front by a point. Lawson made a pair of free throws with 1.2 seconds remaining in the second quarter to give the Nuggets a 50-49 lead at halftime.

NOTES: Lawson registered his fourth career 30-point game. He has scored 20 or more points in 19 of his last 26 games. ... Minnesota missed a chance to string together two wins for the first time since winning a season-high four straight from Dec. 7-15, including a 108-105 home win over the Nuggets. ... Exchanges with officials over disputed calls resulted in Minnesota coach Rick Adelman, Rubio and Nuggets coach George Karl all being hit with technicals. ... Gelabale registered a season high in points.... The Nuggets had 13 steals and have had at least 10 in eight of the past nine games.

THE FACTS: Ty Lawson continued his hot stretch with 32 points, tying his season high, and the Denver Nuggets rolled by the Minnesota Timberwolves 111-88 on Saturday for their eighth straight win.

Corey Brewer scored 15 off the bench for Denver, which has won 13 straight at home. The Nuggets, at 28-3 at Pepsi Center, tied Miami for the best home record this year.

Mickael Gelabale scored a season-high 19 points and J.J. Barea added 15 for the Timberwolves.

The Nuggets avenged one of their home losses with the win Saturday. Minnesota beat Denver 101-97 on Jan. 3 but the Nuggets have won 18 of 19 home games since that loss.

THE STAT: The Nuggets shot 53.8 percent from the field. It's the fourth straight game they've shot better than 53 percent.

TURNING POINT: With the game tied at 57 early in the third, Luke Ridnour tried to loft a fast-break layup off the glass. Andre Iguodala went high to block it, then fed Danilo Gallinari for a 3-pointer that sparked a 14-2 run. Denver never trailed again.

QUOTABLE II: "They played with a lot of energy in the second half. Ty Lawson hit shots and it turned their way in the second half. They're attacking, they're running, they're running and they're running. You've just got to hold on."

HOT: Lawson took over in the fourth quarter. He hit all six of his shots, including two 3-pointers, to help the Nuggets break open the game. He finished with 14 points in the period and with 23 in the second half.

NOT: Wilson Chandler has been solid to great at both ends of the floor for Denver but struggled with foul trouble Saturday. He had five and played just 15 minutes.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Lawson has been the catalyst for Denver's recent success. He has scored 20 or more points in 19 of his last 26 games and is averaging 24.2 points, 3.4 rebounds, 7.7 assists and 1.38 steals while shooting 53.5 percent from the field in his last 13 games.

GOOD MOVE: George Karl is not a theatrical coach, but when Lawson was called for his second offensive foul in a minute the coach got irate with the officials. He drew a technical for angrily arguing the call and his players got a shot of energy after their coach stood up for the point guard. Denver scored the next seven points to take a 17-point lead.

QUOTABLE II: "I'm definitely a believer that Ty doesn't get many calls and then when he gets a couple taken away from him it angers me. I think my team was fighting at that time to play the right way and get into the game. It's that time of the season where everybody's a little grumpy, a little weird."

BAD MOVE: In the first half the Nuggets shot 50 percent, hit 57 percent from 3-point range and outrebounded Minnesota 20-18 but led by only one. Their 10 turnovers helped the Timberwolves stay close.

NOTABLE: Minnesota guard Ricky Rubio had 43 steals in his previous 10 games and none against Denver. ... For the second straight game the Nuggets shot better than 50 percent from the field, 45 percent from 3-point range and 80 percent from the foul line. ... The Nuggets are 25-3 when allowing less than 100 points.
