Bucks-Warriors Preview

It's approaching the one-year anniversary since the Golden State Warriors and Milwaukee Bucks made a deal both hoped would lead their respective teams back into the playoffs.

That didn't happen for either one last season, but that could very well change for both in 2012-13.

Golden State center Andrew Bogut could face his former team for the first time on Saturday night when former Warrior Monta Ellis and the Bucks go for the season sweep.

With Golden State ranked 13th in the Western Conference and Milwaukee tied for eighth in the East, these teams pulled the trigger on a five-player swap on March 14 that sent Ellis, Ekpe Udoh and Kwame Brown to the Bucks for Bogut and Stephen Jackson, who was dealt to San Antonio a day later for Richard Jefferson.

Coincidentally, Ellis' first game in a Bucks jersey was March 16 in Oakland, where he finished with 18 points, four rebounds and four assists in a 120-98 rout of his former team.

Milwaukee won nine of 13 after Ellis' arrival but faded down the stretch to miss the playoffs for the fifth time in six seasons.

The Warriors, meanwhile, ended up 23-43 and out of the postseason for the 17th time in 18 seasons. Bogut didn't suit up for the Warriors at all in 2011-12 after fracturing his ankle seven weeks before the trade.

The oft-injured center missed 38 games earlier this season - including a 109-102 loss at Milwaukee on Jan. 26 - to strengthen his ankle, and he's been back three since sitting out six with a back injury.

Bogut finished with 11 rebounds and a career high-tying four steals in Friday's 94-88 loss to Houston.

Golden State (35-28) fell to 2-1 on a seven-game homestand and had its lead over the seventh-place Rockets cut to one game.

"We didn't put the pressure on them. We settled. I think that was the difference," said coach Mark Jackson, whose team is three in front of the ninth-place Los Angeles Lakers.

If Bogut is allowed to play back-to-back games, he'll match up with Larry Sanders, who's averaging 9.0 points, 9.1 rebounds and a league-best 3.2 blocks.

The teams' trade also opened the door for Warriors second-year guard Klay Thompson, who has taken over Ellis' spot alongside Stephen Curry. Thompson, a 16.5 ppg scorer this season, has reached 20 or more in a career-best four consecutive games after tallying 22 on Friday.

He scored 19 on Jan. 26, while Curry led all scorers with 26 points.

Ellis and point guard Brandon Jennings had 20 apiece to help Milwaukee (30-29) win for the sixth time in seven meetings with Golden State.

The Bucks, eight games ahead of Toronto for the eighth seed, have been getting big production from their backcourt. Ellis is averaging 25.6 points on 52.6 percent shooting over the last five games, while Jennings is scoring 16.3 per contest with 16.0 assists during a double-double streak that's reached a career-best three games.

Their strong play coincides with the arrival of J.J. Redick from Orlando. Redick averaged 15.4 points in his first five games with his new team - Milwaukee won four of those - before finishing with three in Wednesday's 117-101 loss to the Los Angeles Clippers.

Forward Ersan Ilyasova suffered a left bone bruise in that defeat and is questionable for the second stop on the three-game trip. Ilyasova had 18 points and 12 rebounds in the earlier matchup with Golden State.

Jennings, Ellis lead Bucks past Warriors, 103-93

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) Monta Ellis dazzled off the dribble. He wowed with his midair acrobatics. At one point, he even banked in a 3-pointer, then mouthed a few words at Golden State Warriors co-owners Joe Lacob and Peter Guber sitting courtside.

"It just feels like I'm at home," Ellis said.

Ellis had 26 points, five assists and five rebounds against his previous team to help the Milwaukee Bucks beat the Warriors 103-93 on Saturday night. The former fan favorite teased and pleased a sellout crowd of 19,596 inside Oracle Arena behind a new undersized backcourt teammate that matched his every move and more.

Brandon Jennings added 31 points and 10 assists, and J.J. Redick finished with 15 points and seven assists while hitting some big shots late to carry the Bucks (31-29) to their fifth win in six games.

"I loved it," said Ellis, who shot 10 of 19 from the field. "I was here 7 1/2 years. I did everything I could for this team, and they appreciated it and I appreciate them. Even though we had bad seasons, they still came out here and supported us."

In a matchup of teams transformed by last season's trade, Milwaukee has owned the matchup.

The Bucks are 3-0 against the Warriors since sending center Andrew Bogut to the Bay Area for Ellis. He received a big assist in the latest matchup from Jennings, who was 10-of-16 shooting, including 6 of 11 from beyond the arc.

Bogut had four points, four assists and nine rebounds in 29 minutes in his first game against the Bucks since the trade. He didn't speak to reporters following the game, leaving before Warriors coach Mark Jackson's news conference had ended.

"When it gets to a point of closing out games, the stakes are going to be raised, the pressure's going to come. You've got to be able to embrace it and handle it. And right now, we're not," Jackson said.

Klay Thompson scored 18 points and Carl Landry had 18 points and 10 rebounds for the Warriors in place of David Lee. The All-Star forward sat out with a bruised right knee but is hopeful to return Monday night against the New York Knicks.

After losing at home to Houston on Friday night, Golden State's bid for playoff positioning is starting to dwindle. The Warriors (35-29) are a game ahead of the Rockets for sixth place in the Western Conference but only 2 1/2 in front of the hard-charging Los Angeles Lakers and Utah Jazz, who are tied for eighth.

"We put ourselves in position to have some room to work with, but you can't play around with that," said Stephen Curry, who had 16 points and 10 assists.

Milwaukee was also without its starting power forward. Ersan Ilyasova missed the game with a left knee injury that occurred in a loss at the Los Angeles Clippers on Wednesday night. He is day to day.

After falling behind by 10 points at the start of the fourth quarter, the Warriors rallied back - briefly. Thompson made a 3-pointer and a mid-range jumper to slice Milwaukee's lead to 86-85 midway through the quarter.

The Jennings-Ellis backcourt tandem turned out to be too much.

With the pair taking so much of the attention, Redick capitalized on the double teams the Warriors constantly threw their way. Redick converted a difficult layup while Bogut hammered him to the floor, then hit two 3-pointers to put the Bucks ahead 96-87 with 2:47 to play.

Redick's right ankle twisted awkwardly when he landed. He lay on the floor in pain, limped to the bench with the assist of a trainer but returned when play resumed.

At that point, the game already had been decided - in large part by the flashier Bucks guard.

"Monta has been playing at this level for quite a while now," Bucks coach Jim Boylan said. "He's really taken off. His intensity for the last two, maybe three weeks has been as good as you can be. I know he was probably up for this game because it has a little extra meaning for him but it's no different than I see just about every night.

Bogut, drafted No. 1 overall in 2005 by the Bucks, hadn't faced his former team since the trade last March that sent Ellis and forward Ekpe Udoh to Milwaukee for the 7-foot center. Bogut has played in 16 of 63 games this season. He missed most while recovering from left ankle surgery and sat out another six recently because of back spasms.

Bogut already had been ruled out for the season with the ankle injury when the Bucks traded him last March. He missed Milwaukee's win a few days later at Golden State and the Bucks' victory over the Warriors in Milwaukee on Jan. 26.

In his second game in Oakland since last year's trade, Ellis received a spirited ovation when he sprinted out for pregame warm-ups and again during introductions. He put together a series of alluring drives off the dribble that stirred the crowd at the start, scoring 10 points in the first quarter.

The Warriors went ahead by eight in the second quarter before Ellis and Jennings juked them all over the floor.

The pair made its biggest marks from long range, though. Jennings made 5 of his first 7 from beyond the arc, and Ellis' bank 3-pointer put Milwaukee ahead 75-66 late in the third quarter, but he declined to elaborate on what he might've said to the owners.

"I never talked noise in my career," Ellis said. "You never know, I might have to come back here and retire. Who knows?"

NOTES: F Malcolm Thomas, signed to a 10-day contract from the Los Angeles D-Fenders of the NBA Development League on Friday, had two rebounds in three minutes. ... Ish Smith had one assist in 3 minutes in his first action since coming over in the trade that also brought Redick from Orlando last month.

THE FACTS: Brandon Jennings scored 31 points and 10 assists, knocking down a season-high six 3-pointers as the Milwaukee Bucks dealt another blow to the Golden State Warriors' playoff drive with a 103-93 victory Saturday.

Bucks guard Monta Ellis added 26 points, five assists and five rebounds to help seal his second victory in as many trips to Oracle Arena since being traded from the Warriors to Milwaukee on March 13 in a deal for Andrew Bogut.

Carl Landry, starting for Golden State in the power forward slot in place of injured All-Star David Lee, had 18 points and 10 rebounds, but the Warriors' backcourt trio of Klay Thompson (18 points), Stephen Curry (16) and Jarrett Jack (11) couldn't outgun Milwaukee's high-scoring duo. The sixth-place Warriors (35-29) are one game ahead of Houston and 2 1/2 in front of Utah and the Lakers (both 32-31) in the Western Conference standings.

QUOTABLE: "Everybody was making big plays; Brandon was making some really tough individual shots, he was creating for other people. . . . Monta, at the level he's been playing at, he just continues to be on the attack."

THE STAT: The different in the clubs' second-half ball movement was obvious, and embodied by the fact that the Warriors had just seven assists on 19 buckets, while Milwaukee had 17 on 20 field goals.

TURNING POINT: Jennings and Ellis carried the Bucks' offense for much of the game, per usual, but when the Warriors closed to within one point with 4:08 to go, it was Larry Sanders (running jumper) and J.J. Redick (back-to-back 3-pointers) who crafted an 8-0 burst that put the game out of reach.

QUOTABLE II: "When you have J.J. and Larry and those guys that come off the bench and chip in and do their part, it makes it so much easier for us and opens it up for us. It's hard for teams to guard us like that."

HOT: Jennings hadn't done much against the Warriors since dropping a career-high 55 against them on Nov. 15, 2009 -- averaging 15.8 points per game in his next five appearance against Golden State -- but he broke out in major way Saturday. Jennings was more efficient in the first half, with 13 points on only five field-goal attempts, but took over after intermission with volume scoring -- 18 points -- to carry Milwaukee home.

NOT: The Warriors' offense once again crumbled down the stretch, just as it did in a 94-88 loss to Houston on Friday. Golden State closed 2-for-6 from the floor with three turnovers. On the night, the Warriors had 17 turnovers, leading to a very costly 23 Milwaukee points.

QUOTABLE III: "Well, both teams have a worse record than us so I would say they're not better than us. That being said, they played better than us on the given night when we've faced them."

INSIDE THE ARENA: Ellis appeared to bark at Warriors owner Joe Lacob -- the ultimate decision-maker on the trade of Ellis, Kwame Brown and Ekpe Udoh for Bogut and Stephen Jackson -- following a third-quarter 3-pointer, but said after the game he was just exchanging views with one of the game officials. "I never talked noise in my career," Ellis said. "You never know, I might have to come back here and retire."

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Redick came up limping badly on his right ankle after landing on a defender's foot with his final 3-pointer of the game, with 2:47 remaining in the game. Although he returned for the final 1:49, it's not clear if he'll be available Sunday when the Bucks finish this three-game California swing in Sacramento.

BAD MOVE: Jackson rolled the dice with forward Draymond Green down the stretch instead of Bogut, and it didn't pan out, especially when the rookie -- shooting 20.7 percent on 3-pointers this season -- clanked a trey after Golden State had gone down 96-87 with less than three minutes to go.

NOTABLE: It was the first time Bogut, selected No. 1 overall by the Bucks in 2005, faced his only other NBA club. The Australian finished with nine rebounds, four points, four assists and three turnovers. . . . Lee (right knee contusion) said he hoped to be healthy enough to face the Knicks on Monday. . . . Warriors forward Malcolm Thomas, signed from the D-League on Friday, made his Golden State debut with 53.9 seconds left in the first quarter, eventually grabbing two rebounds.
