The Oklahoma City Thunder's last game went down to the wire.

There was far less drama the last time the Northwest Division leaders faced the Charlotte Bobcats.

Oklahoma City goes for a fifth consecutive victory in this series on Friday night in Charlotte.

Looking for a sixth victory in seven games since a season-worst 0-3 stretch, the Thunder (45-16) hung on to defeat the host New York Knicks 95-94 on Thursday.

Oklahoma City moved within 2 1/2 games of idle San Antonio for the top spot in the Western Conference after Knicks guard J.R. Smith missed a turnaround jumper right before the final buzzer.

"We've been hurt on those game-winners a couple of times this year and we didn't want that to happen again," said Kevin Durant, who scored 34 points to lift his league-high average to 28.7. "So we just had to lock in and get a stop."

The Thunder, 4-3 in the second game of back-to-backs, might not face as much of a test in their stop in Charlotte, where the league-worst Bobcats (13-48) have lost 21 of 23.

Charlotte's 114-69 loss in Oklahoma City on Nov. 26 was its worst in franchise history.

All of the Thunder's starters were pulled less than five minutes into the third quarter of that contest after building a 64-24 halftime lead, the fifth-biggest in the league's shot clock era and the largest since Golden State set the record (47 points) against Sacramento on Nov. 2, 1991.

Oklahoma City has won the last four in this series by an average of 26.8 points, and Charlotte has done little of late to show it's capable of stopping that trend Friday. The Bobcats have lost by an average of 22.0 points during their eight-game skid.

They're scoring 86.4 points per game on 39.6 percent shooting during this stretch after scoring 25 second-half points in Wednesday's 99-78 loss to Brooklyn.

"It felt like a darn lid was on the rim," said Gerald Henderson, whose sprained left foot sidelined him in the earlier loss to the Thunder. "You know you can't win in this league if you can't score."

That being said, the Bobcats could be in for another rough two- to four-week stretch after learning that second-leading scorer Ramon Sessions will be out with a second degree MCL sprain in his left knee. The team said Thursday that he will not require surgery.

A rare positive for Charlotte has been the play of rookie forward Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, who has hit 16 of 24 shots while scoring 17 points in back-to-back games.

"It's been fun to see him play that way," coach Mike Dunlap said.

Kidd-Gilchrist may be hard-pressed to continue that production if he's matched up with Durant. The All-Star forward, who had a team-high 18 points in less than 27 minutes on Nov. 26, finished with 32 in Oklahoma City's last visit to Charlotte, a 99-81 victory on Dec. 21, 2010.

The Bobcats had posted three consecutive victories with the Thunder franchise in town.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) Kevin Durant sat in his locker after the game with both of his legs completely wrapped in an air pressure leg massager.

It must have been from habit.

Durant's legs didn't get overworked Friday night as the Oklahoma City Thunder bolted to a 29-point lead in the third quarter and coasted to their fourth straight victory with a 116-94 win over the Charlotte Bobcats.

After playing an average of 42 minutes in his last three games, Durant played less than half of the game but still managed to rack up 19 points, seven assists and six rebounds. But he was more than happy to watch most of the second half from the bench, particularly with the Thunder in the midst of four-game stretch in five nights.

"It's good to get some rest," Durant said. "I played 45 minutes last night and tonight (the starters) basically played a half of basketball. That's good to get you re-energized for the next game. But it's also good that we have such a deep team."

Depth is what won this one for the Thunder.

Derek Fisher and Thabo Sefolosha both had 13 points for the Thunder, who blew open a close game with 19-0 run to start the second quarter with their second team on the floor.

Serge Ibaka scored 12 points, and Russell Westbrook and Kevin Martin each chipped in with 11.

The Thunder shot 59 percent from the field in the first three quarters to build a 90-66 lead and rested their starters the rest of the way.

"That second unit is a defensive unit, but they've shown they can also score," Thunder coach Scott Brooks said.

Center Kendrick Perkins said it's been exciting to see how the second unit has progressed.

"You are starting to get a real team chemistry with that unit as far as Fish, Reggie Jackson and Martin playing aggressive in the backcourt and Nick (Collison) taking charges and getting his hands on the ball. They're doing a great job."

The Thunder have won seven of their last eight.

Gerald Henderson scored 21 points to lead the Bobcats, who have lost nine straight overall and 22 of their last 24 games at home.

The Thunder swept the season series, beating the Bobcats by a combined 67 points.

After getting blown out by 45 points at Oklahoma City in their earlier meeting on Nov. 26, the Bobcats seemed determined early on not to let this one get away.

They led 29-28 at the end of the first quarter behind the hot shooting of Henderson, who knocked down his first five shots for 11 points.

But Charlotte's lead was short-lived. Eventually, the Thunder's talent and depth began to overwhelm the NBA-worst Bobcats.

Oklahoma City opened the second quarter by scoring 19 straight points as the Bobcats missed their first 10 shots and took nearly six minutes before Josh McRoberts knocked down an 18-footer to end a seemingly endless scoring drought.

"We just couldn't keep them from scoring," Henderson said. "At one point in the second quarter, we were down 18 and we didn't know we got there. We just couldn't stop them from scoring. That's where they're a well-oiled machine."

The Thunder held a double-digit lead the rest of the way, taking a 64-50 lead into the locker room after shooting 62.2 percent from the field in the opening half. Half of their points came in the paint as Ibaka was dominant, scoring almost at will.

The Thunder outrebounded the Bobcats 49-37.

This was a break in a tough stretch of games for Oklahoma City, which defeated the Clippers, Lakers and Knicks before their arrival in Charlotte. They'll see stiffer competition when they host Boston on Sunday and visit Sacramento on Monday.

While it may be hard to believe, the Bobcats had a 7-5 record the last time they faced the Thunder.

But their season seemed to turn with that devastating 114-69 loss. The Bobcats are 6-44 since that game and own the worst record in the NBA for the second straight season.

NOTES: The Bobcats were playing without Ramon Sessions, who is out 2-to-4 weeks with a sprained MCL. That meant more playing time for Kemba Walker, who played 31 minutes in the first three quarters. Reggie Williams saw action at point guard in the fourth quarter. ... Fisher's 13 points were his most he's scored in his five games with the Thunder.

THE FACTS: Kevin Durant scored 19 points and the Oklahoma City Thunder used a 19-0 run to start the second quarter as they downed the Charlotte Bobcats 116-94 Friday night at Time Warner Cable Arena. Charlotte's Gerald Henderson led all scorers with 21 points. The Thunder have now won four straight while the Bobcats have dropped nine straight.

QUOTABLE: "Defensively, that 2nd quarter was really good. The second unit came in and did a good job. We locked in and player the way we were supposed to. That helped us on the other end. Our ball movement was good and we were able to make shots. That's what we do. I'm happy with the way we played."

THE STAT: Balance. Oklahoma City took control of the game early and used that to their advantage. The Thunder had six players in double figures including two off the bench. Oklahoma City is in the midst of a four-game, five-night stretch and were able to rest its players with Brooks playing no one more than 25 minutes.

TURNING POINT: the Thunder blitzed the Bobcats to open the second quarter and never looked back. Hasheem Thabeet got things started for Oklahoma City at the 11:10 mark to take a 30-29 lead. The Bobcats stopped the bleeding and scored their first points of the quarter on a Josh McRoberts jumper at the 6:27 mark. However by then the damage had been done. Derek Fisher's three pointer capped off the 19-0 run and OKC would never trail again by less than 14 points.

HOT: The Oklahoma City offense was clicking in North Carolina Friday. The Thunder shot 56.8 percent from the floor on 46-of-81 shooting. They also made 12 three pointers and shot 50 percent from behind the arc. The Thunder is now 21-1 when shooting 50 percent or greater.

NOT: Kemba Walker leads the Bobcats in scoring at 17.1 points per game, but had struggled over the last six games. Walker is averaging 11.7 points on 29.1 percent shooting (23-of-79) during that span while Charlotte has lost all six of those games by an average of 24.7points.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Fisher made a big splash Friday for OKC. The recently signed guard scored 13 points in just 14 minutes of action. He was 5-of-6 from the floor and a perfect 3-of-3 from behind the arc and added three rebounds, three assists and a steal in just his fifth game for the Thunder.

INSIDE THE ARENA: Former Charlotte Bobcat guard Matt Carroll sat in on the radio broadcast with play-by-play man Scott Lauer.

ROOKIE WATCH: Michael Kidd-Gilchrist came up short against the Thunder with just two points while fellow rookie Jeffery Taylor had eight points in 17 minutes. Oklahoma City's two rookies saw action as well. Jeremy Lamb scored five points in seven minutes while Perry Jones had six points and four rebounds in 12 minutes of playing time.

NOTABLE: Bobcats guard Henderson scored in double figures for the fourth straight game and the 15th time in the last 17 games. He also tied a season high with five assists. Walker scored in double figures for the ninth time in the last 10 games and has scored in double figures 55 times. Ben Gordon scored in double figures for the third straight game. Durant and Russell Westbrook each scored in double figures for the 62nd time this season. Kevin Martin was in double figures for the 47th time this season while Serge Ibaka did for the 46th time. The Thunder downed the Bobcats for the fifth straight time. Oklahoma City swept the two-game series this year by a combined 67 points.
