Klay Thompson helped the Golden State Warriors pull out a thrilling victory their last time out.

Wins haven't been easy to come by lately against the Houston Rockets.

Seeking a season best-tying fifth consecutive home win, the Warriors look for their momentum to carry over Friday night against the Rockets, winners of 16 of 18 in the series.

Two nights after beating Toronto 125-118, Golden State (35-27) had its hands full with lowly Sacramento before escaping with an 87-83 win Wednesday. Thompson scored a team-high 20, including the go-ahead 3 with 7.5 seconds to play for the Warriors, who were limited to 36.0 percent shooting - their worst mark in a win since February 2003.

"We're not the Miami Heat. We're not the Oklahoma City Thunder. A lot of nights it's not going to be pretty," coach Mark Jackson said. "That's just the fact. I embrace it. I give my guys credit because we battled, we competed, we got stops when we had to and we continued to put a check mark in the (win) column."

While he may sometimes get overshadowed by sharpshooter Stephen Curry and All-Star forward David Lee, Thompson has played a key role in Golden State's success. He's averaging 23.7 points while going 15 for 27 from 3-point range over the last three games, and the Warriors are 23-10 when he scores at least 16.

"I watch this guy every single day and this guy is a knockdown shooter in every sense of the term," Jackson said. "When you pick guys, that have ever played this game, that had to shoot a wide open shot - he's in the discussion. That's what Klay does for a living."

Lee, who leads the NBA with 41 double-doubles, had 17 points and 10 boards Wednesday. Curry scored 13 on 3-of-11 shooting after averaging 34.6 points over the previous five games.

The Warriors have won eight of nine by the Bay, with their only loss coming 116-107 to the Rockets on Feb. 12. James Harden compiled 27 points to lead seven players in double figures for Houston.

The Rockets (33-29) also beat the Warriors 140-109 on Feb. 5, while tying an NBA record and setting a franchise mark with 23 3-pointers.

Houston snapped a nine-game losing streak against Dallas with Sunday's 136-103 rout, but fell 112-108 in the back end of a home-and-home set Wednesday. Harden had 28 points and nine assists while Chandler Parsons scored 23, but the Rockets allowed the host Mavericks to shoot 54.2 percent.

Losers of 12 of 18 as the visiting team, the Rockets sit in seventh place in the Western Conference, two games behind the Warriors.

"This doesn't change anything. We're going to stick together. We think we should have won the game. So we're not going to hang our heads at all," said Parsons, who's averaging 24.0 points while going 21 for 36 from long distance over the last five games.

"We played well enough to win the game and just didn't. So we'll clean up some stuff ... and get ready for Golden State."

Jeremy Lin, who played sparingly for the Warriors in the first year of his career, is averaging 21.0 points and 9.5 assists against them this season. The Rockets are 20-10 when he has at least seven assists compared to 13-19 when he has six or fewer.

Rockets top Warriors 94-88 to take season series

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) The high-scoring Houston Rockets relied on defense for a change to earn a victory that will look far better in the standings.

Chandler Parsons scored 26 points, James Harden had 20 points and 11 assists and the Rockets overcame a horrendous shooting performance to beat the Golden State Warriors 94-88 on Friday night.

"We definitely had some positive steps in our defense," said Harden, who shot 3 for 17 from the floor. "On the road, playoff-atmosphere game, it shows the type of camaraderie we've got and the kind of togetherness we're building."

Jeremy Lin added 15 points and seven rebounds to help Houston improve to 3-0 against his former team this season in a matchup for Western Conference playoff position.

Omer Asik added 17 rebounds for the Rockets (34-29), who are one game behind the Warriors (35-28) for sixth place in the conference.

"That's important," Lin said. "I actually didn't even think about (the tiebreaker) until today. But at the end of the day, if we don't take care of business from now until then we can forget about the tiebreaker."

Stephen Curry had 24 points and eight assists and Klay Thompson scored 22 points for Golden State, which fell to 2-1 during its season-long seven-game homestand. David Lee added 16 points and five rebounds for the Warriors despite bruising his right knee in the first half.

The Warriors shot 37.9 percent from the floor, while the Rockets were held to 36.5 percent. But Golden State was outscored 21-12 in the final quarter.

"I thought at times we were careless. I thought at times we were too passive," Warriors coach Mark Jackson said. "We didn't put the pressure on them. We settled. I think that was the difference. We settled."

The Rockets rallied to score the first nine points of the fourth quarter, going ahead 82-76 on Francisco Garcia's 3-pointer. Curry and Thompson each connected from beyond the arc sandwiched around another Houston basket, then the Warriors tied the game at 86 on Harrison Barnes' layup with 3:50 remaining.

Harden made 3 of 4 free throws over the next two possessions to lift the Rockets to an 89-86 lead. Lee's dunk off a pretty pick-and-roll pass from Curry brought the Warriors within a point before Harden made another from the line to extend Houston's lead to 90-88 with 1:09 to play.

After Barnes missed a mid-range jumper, Lin got Curry in the air and drew a foul. Lin, cut by the Warriors last year before breaking out with the New York Knicks, made both free throws.

Then Curry missed an open 3-pointer following a timeout, and Jackson declined to foul the Rockets after his players didn't immediately rush to get a whistle.

Instead, Harden lost the ball to Lee, whose quick pass ahead to Curry was intercepted by Carlos Delfino to seal Houston's victory.

"We're a young, streaky team and it was really important for us to come out and get this win," Rockets coach Kevin McHale said.

The Rockets entered the game averaging 107 points, which was tied with Oklahoma City for the most in the NBA. Houston had reached 100 points in 17 of past 18 games.

Houston helped its cause by making 25 of 34 free throws. Golden State shot 13 of 20 from the line.

The Rockets, who tied the NBA record with 23 made 3-pointers in a testy 140-109 rout of the Warriors in Houston on Feb. 5, started out strong from long range. They made 5 of 6 from beyond the arc to take a 17-16 lead to open the game.

The Rockets finished 15 for 35 from beyond the arc.

Golden State briefly lost Lee to a bruised right knee after the All-Star forward missed a rebound and fouled Thomas Robinson with 4:36 remaining in the quarter. Lee went to the locker room for observation, and he returned in the second half wearing a white wrap around the knee.

"I've been waiting eight years to be in a playoff race," Lee said. "Once the doctors told me I couldn't do anything worse to hurt it, I was going to play."

The Warriors withstood Lee's limitations and Houston's shooters for most of the game. They started attacking the basket instead of settling on the perimeter, going ahead 41-28 on Curry's floater in the lane in the second quarter.

The Rockets regained their rhythm from behind the arc. Houston ended the second quarter on a 22-7 run, making 10 of 20 3-pointers before halftime for a 50-48 lead.

After Houston went ahead by seven in the third quarter, the Warriors found some relief from an unexpected place.

Andrew Bogut's 3-pointer with the shot clock winding down highlighted 11 straight points to give Golden State a 70-66 lead. Bogut hadn't made a 3-pointer since Dec. 1, 2006. He is 2 for 23 from long range in his career.

Bogut finished with three points, 11 rebounds, four steals and two blocks in 28 minutes.

NOTES: The Warriors wore their yellow short-sleeve jerseys with pinstripe shorts for the second time, while Houston had its retro red and yellow uniforms. ... Thompson has scored at least 20 points in a career-high four straight games. ... Houston hosts Golden State on March 17 in the final meeting between the teams this season.

THE FACTS: Chandler Parsons scored a game-high 26 points and James Harden had nine in the fourth quarter to key the Houston Rockets' comeback 94-88 victory against the Golden State Warriors on Friday.

The Rockets (34-29) moved to within one game of catching the Warriors (35-28), who currently hold the sixth spot in the Western Conference standings, by holding Golden State to just 12 points in the fourth quarter. With three wins in as many tries against the Warriors, the Rockets clinched the season series and postseason tiebreaker.

Harden finished with 20 points and 11 assists to offset a 3-for-17 shooting performance, which included an 0-for-9 mark inside the 3-point arc.

Stephen Curry had 24 points with eight assists and Klay Thompson added 22 for the Warriors, who saw their modest two-game winning streak snapped.

QUOTABLE: "We're a young, streaky team and it was really important for us to come out and get this win. I thought we kind of give one away in Dallas."

THE STAT: McHale said his team didn't make any adjustments to their defensive game plan, but the Rockets' results were far superior in the fourth period. The Warriors missed 17-of-21 shots and their three-guard finishing trio of Curry, Thompson and Jarrett Jack combined to go 2-for-11.

TURNING POINT: All-Star Warriors forward David Lee opened the game 4-4 from the floor with 10 points in just 7:24, but he left the game after suffering a right knee contusion in a collision with Houston's Thomas Robinson. Lee did not come back until intermission, and even then, it was a return in name only. Hobbled by the injury, Lee totaled six points, three rebounds, three fouls and three turnovers in the second half.

QUOTABLE II: "Not feeling too good right now. . . . Initially when I came back in the locker room, I couldn't put weight on it. Whenever I straightened it out it hurt. I've been waiting eight years to get in the playoff race, so when the doctors told me I couldn't do any more to hurt it -- if I could walk, I could play -- that's what I decided to do."

BAD MOVE: The Warriors had a chance to force a tie or go-ahead in the final minute, with the ball in their hands and Houston clinging to a 90-88 advantage. Golden State ran pick-and-roll action from the top of the key, with Jack moving right to catch Lee's screen, but that took the ball away from Curry on the left side. Jack eventually passed to rookie forward Harrison Barnes, who stepped in and settled for a contested 15-foot jumper. In retrospect, his miss turned out to be Golden State's last gasp -- and Curry, the team's leading scorer, never even touched the ball.

HOT: This was Parsons' fourth career game of 25 or more points -- all of them coming this season -- and he was practically over that threshold before the fourth quarter began, putting up 24 points through three periods with a 6-for-7 performance on 3-pointers.

QUOTABLE III: "We're battling for that sixth seed. . . . They have a good schedule coming up; they're going to protect their home court. We've got to make sure that we take care of our business but, yeah, we'll probably go down to the wire."

NOT: Harden started off in a miserable slump -- missing all six first-quarter shots -- although he worked around that late by forcing his way to the free-throw line in typical fashion, with 14 foul shots on the night.

HOT, THEN NOT: Thompson had a spectacular finish to the first quarter -- 3-pointer, jumper, block on Harden and fast-break layup just before the quarter-ending buzzer for 11 points. He never got back in that same groove, however, in the last three periods, which rendered his personal streak -- four straight games of at least 20 points -- somewhat hollow.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Warriors 7-footer Andrew Bogut, facing a dwindling shot clock and standing deep on the right wing midway through the third quarter, drained his second career NBA 3-pointer in 23 attempts. His only other make came on Dec. 1, 2006, a span of 2,290 days. It was an otherwise forgettable night offensively for Bogut, who did come up with 11 rebounds and a career-high-tying four steals.

INSIDE THE ARENA: Commissioner David Stern held court for 20 minutes prior to the game with Northern California media -- a session dominated by questions from Sacramento-based reporters regarding the Kings' future and potential relocation to Seattle. Stern said the counter-offer by Mark Mastrov to keep the Kings in Sacramento was substantially less money than Chris Hansen's offer in Seattle, and would have to be increased to be taken to the league's Board of Governors. With Mastrov sitting courtside, the 24 Hour Fitness founder gave a stream of interviews to TV and print media.

NOTABLE: For the third time in as many games this season against Golden State, Houston center Omer Asik collected at least15 rebounds. The number was 17 on Friday. . . . The Warriors had D-League pickup Malcolm Thomas -- whom Golden State coach Mark Jackson described as having the potential to be a smaller version of Milwaukee shot-blocking fiend Larry Sanders -- in uniform after signing him earlier Friday.
