Hawks-Celtics Preview

The last time the Boston Celtics faced the Atlanta Hawks, they lost All-Star point guard Rajon Rondo for the remainder of the season and were on their longest skid in nearly six years.

Many began to question whether the Celtics should just pack it in the rest of the way and deal Paul Pierce or Kevin Garnett before the trade deadline, but they decided to stay the course - and the results have been almost hard to believe.

Coming off a remarkable comeback against one of the better teams in the Eastern Conference, Boston looks to improve to 14-4 since Rondo went down and win nine in a row at home for the first time since the end of the 2008-09 season when it meets the Hawks on Friday night.

Rondo tore his ACL in a 123-111 double-overtime loss in Atlanta on Jan. 25, Boston's sixth straight defeat as it blew a 27-point lead. The Celtics didn't know the severity of the injury until two days later during a home game against Miami, which they won 100-98 in double OT.

Following that victory, coach Doc Rivers said the team was down but would not give up.

"You can write the obituary," Rivers told reporters. "I'm not. You can go ahead, but I'm not. We won and so the way I look at it is we're going to stay in there."

Boston (33-27) has done more than just hang around. It led Philadelphia by 2 1/2 games for the eighth and final playoff berth in the East after beating the Heat, and it enters this matchup in seventh place with a 2 1/2-game advantage over eighth-place Milwaukee.

The Celtics were five games behind Brooklyn for fourth place but have pulled within 1 1/2 of the Nets for that spot. They trail the fifth-place Hawks (34-26) by one game.

Boston rallied from nine points down in the final 4:36 of Wednesday night's visit to Indiana, scoring the game's last 11 points to come away with an 83-81 win after Garnett found Jeff Green under the basket for a layup with 0.5 seconds remaining.

"We have found ways to win. The trust is there now," Green said after the Celtics' fourth straight victory. "Guys are giving what Doc wants. We are finding a way."

Boston found a way to win all three games at home in eliminating Atlanta in six games in the first round of last season's playoffs. Including the postseason, the Celtics have won 14 of 16 on their own court against the Hawks.

Road-weary Atlanta avoided a season high-tying fourth straight defeat Wednesday night with a 107-96 home win over the 76ers. The Hawks returned to Atlanta after splitting a six-game trip, and they're in the midst of playing 10 of 14 on the road.

Jeff Teague led the way against Philadelphia with 27 points and 11 assists, Al Horford added 21 points, 12 rebounds and six assists, and journeyman forward Anthony Tolliver came off the bench to score a season-high 21 points.

Tolliver went 7 of 10 from the field and hit 5 of 7 3-point attempts while also grabbing a season-best eight rebounds and blocking two shots.

"The starters played a lot of minutes on the road," said Tolliver, who came in averaging 3.4 points. "We knew that coming off the bench, we had to bring a lot of energy and help these starters get the win."

Boston won 89-81 in Atlanta in the first meeting this season Jan. 5. Rondo had a triple-double and Pierce chipped in with 26 points, nine rebounds and five assists.

Terry lifts Celtics to 107-102 win over Hawks

BOSTON (AP) The Boston Celtics took an unusual route to reach a tie with the Atlanta Hawks in the Eastern Conference standings.

After holding a 12-point lead with 6:35 left in the fourth quarter, the Celtics needed an overtime rally to beat the Hawks 107-102 on Friday night.

The Celtics had four field goals in the OT and three of them came from beyond the arc, including Jason Terry's tiebreaker with 35 seconds remaining put Boston ahead to stay.

"I was brought here to make big shots and make plays and be a spark off the bench," Terry said.

Terry, Jeff Green and Paul Pierce all hit 3-pointers in the OT and the Celtics held the Hawks without field goal over the final 2:14.

Pierce finished with 27 points, seven rebounds and seven assists. Kevin Garnett had 17 points and eight rebounds and Terry scored 19, 11 more than Atlanta's reserves combined.

"Jason really stepped up. We count on him late in games," Pierce said. "Even if he doesn't get the shot, he's such a threat late in games that you can't come off of him. He's hit so many big shots throughout his career. He understands the moment and that's why he's here."

Boston won its fifth straight and is tied with the Hawks at 34-27, sixth in the Eastern Conference.

"We just continue to fight. In the stretch run of the season, every game is crucial," Pierce said. "Between the fourth and eight spot, it's a difference between 1 or 2 games so all these games are big and we understand the sense of urgency."

The Celtics improved to 7-4 in overtime and set a franchise record with their 11th OT game this season.

Josh Smith scored 32 points and Jeff Teague had 26 points and nine assists for the Hawks, who outscored the Celtics 48-32 in the paint but couldn't overcome a pair of turnovers by Smith in the final minute of OT.

"I had a couple of turnovers that I wish I could've had back," Smith said. "We couldn't come up with the big rebound that we needed in that overtime."

Al Horford added 22 points and Devin Harris scored 12 for Atlanta. Four starters scored in double figures for the Hawks, but only two other players scored at all for Atlanta in its fourth loss in five games.

The Hawks did make it a thrilling finish in a game Boston appeared to have in hand after a 10-0 run early in the fourth quarter. Atlanta still had time and didn't panic, using a 13-4 run to get back in it and force overtime.

Kyle Korver's 3-pointer with 1:31 left tied it at 92-all and was just the second field goal by a reserve for the Hawks. Pierce answered with a jumper, then Smith set up Horford on an alley-oop dunk to tie it up again.

"We just really wanted to make sure we controlled the rhythm of the game. I thought we did a good job for the most part of that late, particularly in the overtime," Atlanta coach Larry Drew said. "We just had too many bad plays on both ends of the floor."

The Hawks led 98-96 in overtime when Green got lucky for the Celtics with a 3-pointer that bounced high off the rim initially, but somehow stayed on target and went in after two more fortunate bounces and the Celtics had their first lead of overtime at 99-98. Smith answered right away with a 3-pointer, which Pierce matched with 1:37 left to put the Celtics ahead 102-101.

It was tied at 102 when Terry continued the 3-point frenzy on a 25-footer with 35 seconds remaining off a pass from Pierce.

Atlanta turned it over on a bad pass by Smith and Terry drew a foul, sealing the game with a pair of free throws.

Notes: The Hawks were on the road for the seventh time in eight games. ... Pierce scored 11 in the first quarter as the Celtics opened the game 11 for 19 (58 percent). ... Terry's 3-pointer with four seconds left in the second quarter gave the Celtics a 52-47 halftime lead. ... Anthony Tolliver was the only Atlanta reserve to score in the first half, finishing with five points. ... New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski sat courtside and received a standing ovation when he was shown on the overhead monitor early in the fourth quarter.

THE FACTS: Paul Pierce had 27 points, seven rebounds and seven assists, as the Boston Celtics held off a late rally from the Atlanta Hawks to escape with a 107-102 overtime win. The victory was the ninth consecutive win for Boston at the TD Garden, though it came with plenty of drama. The Celtics lost a 12-point lead in the fourth quarter, thanks to some stellar play from Josh Smith (32 points) and Jeff Teague (26 points). The Hawks missed a chance to win at the end of regulation, and the C's regained command in overtime behind an 8-1 run to close out the game, earning Boston their fourth straight win overall.

QUOTABLE: "We're working hard, we're grinding. We're showing our character. Our coaches are grinding themselves, and this team is just that. Were not looking for any handouts or sympathies or anything like that. We don't expect anyone to give us nothing. We're going out, working hard and earning everything we're getting."

THE STAT: The Celtics played their 11th overtime game of the season, as well as their 16th overtime period of the year. Both of those are new franchise records for the team. With the victory, the Celtics improved to 7-4 in overtime games this season.

TURNING POINT: With the score tied at 102 and under a minute remaining in overtime, Pierce drove baseline against Smith, drawing a large crowd of Hawks defenders under the basket. With the added attention, Pierce made a smart dish to Jason Terry at the top of the key, and the clutch guard hit the game-winning 3-pointer with 35 seconds left.

QUOTABLE II: "I thought the thing [Terry] did better than anything was he guarded [Kyle] Korver, you know? And he was like glue; he just stayed on him, took away his shots. I think Korver ended up getting the one three; I just thought overall his defense was huge for us tonight."

HOT: Pierce -- The Hawks had no answer for Boston's captain early, as the 11-time All-Star was firing on all cylinders out of the gate. Pierce hits four of his five shots in the opening frame and finished with 11 points in the quarter.

NOT: Kyle Korver -- After lighting up the Celtics in their last head-to-head matchup on January 25th for eight 3-pointers, the sharpshooter was unable to regain that rhythm in Boston. Korver missed four of his shot attempts and managed to score just three points over 38 minutes.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Smith -- With Atlanta short-handed in the frontcourt, Smith rose to the challenge, logging heavy minutes for Larry Drew and doing a little bit of everything. The forward finished just shy of a triple-double, with a season-high 32 points, eight rebounds, nine assists and a pair of steals.

ROOKIE WATCH: John Jenkins -- The shooting guard out of Vanderbilt had a quiet night for the Hawks, going scoreless over eight minutes of action.

INSIDE THE ARENA: New England Patriots' star tight end Rob Gronkowski watched the contest from courtside at the TD Garden.

NOTABLE: Garnett passed Wes Unseld to reach 10th place on the all-time NBA rebounding list. Zaza Pachuila (achilles), Ivan Johnson (personal reasons) and DeShawn Stevenson (rest) all missed Friday's contest. Johan Petro made his first start of the season tonight at center at center. The veteran big man scored two points and grabbed four rebounds in 17 minutes. Atlanta has now lost four straight road games. The Celtics improved to 16-7 this season without Rajon Rondo, including a 10-0 mark at home.
