Thunder-Knicks Preview

The Oklahoma City Thunder knew their defensive intensity had to improve following their worst stretch of the season.

Has it ever.

The Thunder and Knicks each go for a sixth victory in seven games on Thursday night at Madison Square Garden, where New York could again be without Carmelo Anthony in this matchup of division leaders.

Coach Scott Brooks knew his team had to "regroup and figure out it out defensively" after giving up 113.7 points per game during an three-game skid from Feb. 12-20, and the Northwest-leading Thunder (44-16) have not disappointed. They've held their last six opponents to an average of 95.2 points on 40.8 percent shooting.

"I think the defense was the key," said Brooks, whose team limited the Los Angeles Lakers to 16 fourth-quarter points and 40.3 shooting overall in Tuesday's 122-105 victory. "We do that, we're going to get opportunities on the break, which we've been pretty efficient scoring and converting our opportunities."

The Thunder, second in the Western Conference, rank among the NBA leaders with 17.1 fast-break points per game, which comes as no surprise considering Russell Westbrook and Kevin Durant are finishing many of those.

Westbrook and Durant, though, are also committing more turnovers per game (6.7) than any NBA duo. Taking care of the ball hasn't been the Thunder's forte - they're committing 15.5 turnovers per game - but they equaled a league mark for fewest (two) giveaways in a game on Tuesday.

"I think we've done a great job of just learning and trying to get better at it each and every game," said Westbrook, who's scoring a team-best 32.2 points per game with 5.8 assists and 5.5 rebounds during this 5-1 stretch. "Not really focusing on it but just making the right decisions."

The Knicks (37-21) have done a great job taking care of the ball - averaging a league-low 12.1 turnovers - but that wasn't the case in Wednesday's 87-77 victory at Detroit when they committed 11 of their season-high 21 in the opening 12 minutes.

"Sometimes you can try to over-attack," said Raymond Felton, who finished with 26 points and a season high-tying seven turnovers. "Sometimes you've got to take what the defense gives you no matter who's playing."

New York, now second in the East after pulling a half-game ahead of Indiana on Wednesday, improved to 4-4 this season without Anthony, who left Monday's 102-97 win at Cleveland with a right knee injury.

"That is the sign of a true team, a team that is willing to step up and make plays and win regardless of who is in uniform," coach Mike Woodson said.

It's uncertain if Anthony, the league's second-leading scorer with 28.2 points per game - Durant is averaging 28.6 - will miss a second straight game on Thursday.

Even if he does, Thunder big men Serge Ibaka and Kendrick Perkins could have their hands full with Amare Stoudemire, who has matched a season-high point total (22) in each of the last two games.

Stoudemire is shooting 72.9 percent (43 for 59) from the field and averaging 17.3 points over the last six.

The Knicks, 9-3 at home against the West, have lost eight of 10 in this series, but they won 112-98 in the Thunder's last trip to MSG on Dec. 22, 2010.

Oklahoma City has won just four of its last 11 as the visitor, yet two of those wins have been against the Pacific-leading Los Angeles Clippers - including a 108-104 victory on Sunday.

Thunder hold off Smith, Knicks as Anthony sits

NEW YORK (AP) The Kevin Durant-Carmelo Anthony duel was postponed, though J.R. Smith filled in nicely - for three quarters.

The Oklahoma City Thunder finally silenced the Knicks' streaky shooter in the fourth, hanging on to beat New York 95-94 on Thursday night when Smith missed a turnaround jumper just before the buzzer.

"We've been hurt on those game-winners a couple of times this year and we didn't want that to happen again," Durant said. "So we just had to lock in and get a stop."

Durant scored 34 points, including two free throws with 1:38 left that put Oklahoma City in front for good. He also had eight rebounds and six assists.

Russell Westbrook struggled over the final three quarters but finished with 21 points, six rebounds and five assists, plus provided tough defense on Smith's last shot in the Thunder's first trip to New York since Dec. 22, 2010.

Kevin Martin had 16 points as Oklahoma City posted its third straight win, fighting off a spirited effort by a Knicks team missing Anthony. The All-Star forward missed his second straight game with what the Knicks said is a stiff and sore right knee.

"It was a great fight. I mean we put up a heck of a fight out there tonight," Knicks forward Amare Stoudemire said. "We played great defensively, offensively we were playing well, the ball was moving, so we can be happy with the way we played but still a little upset that we lost down the stretch."

Smith scored a season-high 36 points but was just 2 of 9 from the field in the final period, 1 of 5 on 3-pointers. He said afterward he probably should've tried to drive on the last possession.

"My jumper was pretty much good all night except for the fourth quarter and just didn't go in," Smith said.

Neither team led by more than two points over the final 10 1/2 minutes. Durant scored 12 in the final period while Westbrook was shut out.

Smith missed a 3-pointer with 33 seconds left but the Knicks had a final chance after Durant was off on a jumper with about 9 seconds to go. Smith got the ball in about the same spot where he hit a winning jumper against Phoenix earlier this season, but his shot was long as the Knicks had their two game-winning streak snapped.

Anthony was hurt Monday in Cleveland, falling to the court without contact as he tried to catch a pass. Coach Mike Woodson said he is day to day and doesn't believe the injury is serious, but the Knicks said the same about Jeremy Lin last season and others in recent years, so their fans won't relax until they see Anthony back on the floor.

He surely would like that to be sometime before the Knicks visit Denver next Wednesday for his long-awaited first trip back since the Nuggets traded him in February 2011.

In the meantime, the Knicks showed again they've got enough guys to compete without him - but not enough to beat a top team like the Thunder.

Raymond Felton and Stoudemire each had 16 points for the Knicks, who were playing their fourth game in five nights against the rested and more athletic Thunder.

The Knicks were only 4 of 18 in the fourth quarter, making just 1 of 9 3-pointers.

"In the fourth quarter we just tried to come out and play lockdown defense, and I think that's what we did," Durant said.

Anthony's injury prevented a matchup between the NBA's top two scorers, his 28.2 points per game slightly behind the 28.6 Durant came in averaging as he tries to lead the league for the fourth straight season.

But it was still a loud crowd for the Thunder's first game here in more than two years, since they weren't scheduled for a game at Madison Square Garden in the lockout-shortened 2011-12 season.

"You missed it last year with the shortened season," said Oklahoma City coach Scott Brooks, who played for the Knicks in the 1996-97 season. "It's one of those things, especially for myself because I like coming here and seeing all the excitement, and that was one of the disappointing things of looking at least season's schedule. We didn't have a stop here in New York City."

He said it would be exciting and he was right, mostly because of Smith's big night.

The reserve guard shoots often even when he's not doing it accurately, and just Sunday he threw up 14 3-point shots against Miami while making just three. But the Knicks needed him to keep shooting without Anthony, and he was locked in during the middle two quarters.

"He was making some tough shots. He's one of the guys in this league that you can guard well and he can make a tough shot. He was in a zone," Brooks said.

The Thunder scored 16 straight points, going ahead by 10 en route to a 35-26 lead behind 15 first-quarter points from Westbrook. The Knicks fought back to tie it at 48 on a basket by Kenyon Martin, on his second 10-day contract and getting his first extended playing time since signing late last month. Smith scored 18 in the second period, but the Thunder regrouped to take a 59-56 lead to the locker room.

The Knicks surged into the lead with nine straight points, highlighted by Stoudemire's dunk over Serge Ibaka, and went ahead 75-69 with 2:07 left in the third. Smith made sure they kept that margin going to the fourth, hitting two 3-pointers in the final 34 seconds to make it 81-75.

NOTES: Oklahoma City G Ronnie Brewer didn't play. Brewer was a starter for the Knicks to begin the season, but eventually lost his place in the rotation entirely after a lengthy slump and was dealt to the Thunder for a second-round pick at the trade deadline. ... The Knicks wore jerseys saying "Nueva York" as part of the NBA's Latin Nights series.

THE FACTS: Kevin Durant went for 34 points, eight rebounds and six assists and Russell Westbrook had 21 points, six rebounds and five assists as the Oklahoma City Thunder won their third straight, defeating the Knicks, 95-94, in a back-and-forth thriller at Madison Square Garden.

In the absence of Carmelo Anthony (stiff knee), J.R. Smith led the Knicks with 36 points, including 6-of-13 from the arc, but he misfired on a 3-point attempt with 32 seconds left and a 2-point attempt as time expired. Either shot would've put the Knicks ahead.

Amar'e Stoudemire and Raymond Felton added 16 apiece for the Knicks.

Kevin Martin added 16 points and Serge Ibaka 12 for the Thunder, who hadn't played at the Garden since December 2010.

QUOTABLE: "I tried to get to my spot where I really wanted to get to. A turnaround jumper's a tough shot in that situation. I really should've went to the basket and take a page out of LeBron's book yesterday and just try to go to the basket. Worse comes to worst, get the foul. But it didn't work quite there. THE STAT: The Thunder went 25-of-29 from the free throw line, while the Knicks went 14-of-14.

TURNING POINT: After Durant put the Thunder up 95-94 with two foul shots with 1:38 remaining, Smith missed a 3-pointer from the left wing with 32 seconds left. Durant missed a two-point attempt and the the Knicks got the ball back with 7.9 seconds left. Smith backed down Westbrook but misfired on a 2-point shot from the left wing as time expired.

QUOTABLE II: "The play was for J.R. And I thought once he actually caught it, he looked up at the clock and he caught it and faced. He could've just gone with it. WHO'S HOT: Smith scored 30+ for the first time as a Knick and the first time since March 12, 2011, when he was with Denver. His career-high is 45.

NOTABLE: Anthony did not play for the second straight game because of fluid on his knee. "I'm not overly concerned," Woodson said. "He's day-to-day and eventually he'll be back on the floor playing." Woodson said he wanted to get Anthony back down to about 34-35 minutes per game instead of close to 40. Anthony sat out Wednesday's 87-77 win in Detroit after falling to the floor during Monday's win in Cleveland; he initially said he received treatment on the knee during halftime of Sunday's loss to the Miami Heat. The Knicks are now 4-5 this year without Anthony, the NBA's second-leading scorer (28.2).
