Kings-Warriors Preview

If the Golden State Warriors can keep protecting their home court, there's a good chance they'll make the postseason for the second time in 19 seasons.

The Warriors, though, should just be concerned about the taking care of the lowly Sacramento Kings, who will look to improve to 3-0 in the season series on Wednesday night in their first visit to Oakland in 2012-13.

With a run to the Western Conference semifinals in 2007 as the eighth seed their lone postseason appearance since 1994, the Warriors (34-27) – currently sixth in the West – are excited about participating in meaningful games down the stretch. They'll play 15 of their final 21 at Oracle Arena, with eight of those coming against teams at or below .500.

Sacramento (21-41) owns the West's worst record following Tuesday's 120-113 loss to Denver.

"It feels good that we put ourselves in position to get to this point," said Warriors coach Mark Jackson, whose team opened a seven-game homestand - and snapped a four-game slide - with Monday's 125-118 victory over Toronto. "And now it's about sealing the deal, finishing up the season the right way. Our guys have earned that right, and it's great to be in this situation, but it's not just going to happen on its own."

The Warriors, 19-7 at home, know that after already losing two close games to Sacramento. The Kings avoided their first 0-4 start in four seasons with a 94-92 victory on Nov. 5, and they snapped a five-game skid with a 131-127 win on Dec. 19 in one of the Warriors' worst defensive performances of the season.

Defense continues to be one of the Warriors' glaring weaknesses, as they've given up 109.7 points per game while dropping 10 of their last 14.

The Kings are averaging 110.9 points over their last 12, and they've hit 10 or more 3-pointers in six of seven.

"We've had enough team meetings and what we need to do to correct things. Let's lead by our action," Warriors point guard Jarrett Jack said.

The return of center Andrew Bogut, who had four points and eight rebounds on Monday after a six-game absence with back spasms, should help on the defensive end and on the glass. However, even with All-Star forward David Lee posting his league-best 40th double-double – and seventh in a row – against the Raptors with 29 points and 11 rebounds, the Warriors surrendered 19 offensive boards.

They can't afford that type of effort against Kings center DeMarcus Cousins, who has team highs with 47 points and 22 boards against Golden State this season. Cousins finished with eight points, 13 rebounds and a career-best five blocks on Tuesday, but he also endured the worst shooting performance of his career (1 for 12).

Sixth-man Marcus Thornton, though, is enjoying his best shooting stretch of the season for the Kings, hitting 19 of 40 3s and averaging 26.2 points on 57.9 percent shooting over the last five games.

Golden State's Stephen Curry has been even better in his last five, making 26 of 48 3s and scoring 34.6 points per game. Curry missed the Kings' last visit - a 111-108 Warriors State victory on March 24 - with a sprained right ankle.

Sacramento, loser of eight of 10, last won three straight over Golden State during a 15-game run from Jan. 15, 2000-Nov. 16, 2003.

Thompson's shot leads Warriors past Kings, 87-83

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) The possible game-winning shot that Klay Thompson missed in a last-second loss at Sacramento earlier this season will no longer be the second-year guard's enduring memory of the Northern California series.

Thompson made a go-ahead 3-pointer with 7.5 seconds remaining and finished with 20 points to lead the Golden State Warriors past the Kings, 87-83 on Wednesday night. Not only did Thompson atone for that 94-92 loss on Nov. 5, he helped the Warriors erase almost 48 minutes of bad basketball in one stroke.

"This kind of made up for it," Thompson said.

Thompson, who has matched his career best with three straight games of at least 20 points, then forced Tyreke Evans into an errant layup on the final possession to seal a sloppy win for the Warriors over the Western Conference's worst team. After dropping the first two in Sacramento this season, Golden State overcame 18 turnovers and 36 percent shooting against its Northern California rival.

David Lee had 17 points and 10 rebounds and rookie Harrison Barnes added 14 points for the Warriors, who are 2-0 since returning home from a four-game road losing streak. They held the Kings to 40 percent shooting and forced 15 turnovers.

"We're not the Miami Heat. We're not the Oklahoma City Thunder. A lot of nights it's not going to be pretty," Warriors coach Mark Jackson said. "That's just the fact. I embrace it. I give my guys credit because we battled, we competed, we got stops when we had to and we continued to put a check mark in the `W' column."

Jason Thompson had 17 points and eight rebounds, and Patrick Patterson scored 15 for Sacramento, which has lost 11 of its last 13 games. DeMarcus Cousins had five points and four rebounds and sat out the entire second and fourth quarters in another bad body-language performance.

Asked after the game if he was surprised by his minutes, Cousins said: "You kind of expect anything here."

"I went with a group that kept us in the game," Kings coach Keith Smart said. "We are a play away from winning the basketball game. That group got us back in the game."

In the end, the long-range shot bailed out the Warriors again.

Stephen Curry came off a pick-and-roll and made a 3-pointer to give Golden State an 82-78 lead with a little more than 2 minutes remaining. The Warriors stopped Sacramento, but then had a shot-clock violation just before Jarrett Jack's layup.

Thompson hit a jumper and Patterson followed with a 3-pointer in front of the Warriors bench to put the Kings ahead 83-82. Patterson mouthed a few words and flicked three fingers back at Golden State's bench as he skipped down court.

The Warriors then blew two chances to tie or take the lead. Jack missed a 3-pointer on the first one, and Thompson missed an open jumper after another stop and timeout.

The third time proved to be the charm.

Lee found Thompson standing open in the corner on a play designed for Curry, and the second-year guard's swish gave Golden State an 85-83 lead, holding his hand in the air as the sold-out crowd announced at 19,956 roared to its feet. Thompson, whose miss around the free-throw line capped the loss in Sacramento, had never hit a game-winning shot in the NBA.

"Didn't know it'd come this time around. But if you want to be a great player in this league, you can't have a conscience," said Thompson, who finished 6 for 17 from the floor. "I've learned a lot this year. I've missed some big shots. Hopefully this is a building block. I've learned you just got to play free out there and let it go when you're open."

Evans missed a difficult layup in Thompson's face on the next play, Draymond Green grabbed the rebound and made both free throws to seal the victory. Evans said after the game Thompson should've been called for a foul.

"Everybody saw it, but I didn't get the call, so got to keep playing," he said.

Andrew Bogut, starting for the second straight game after sitting out the previous six with back spasms, only played in spurts and deferred to his teammates on offense. He finished with two points and eight rebounds in 28 minutes.

Cousins picked up two fouls in the first 10 minutes, sat the rest of the half and often looked disinterested. During one timeout in the second quarter, he watched the in-house band instead of joining the Kings huddle. Cousins, who had eight points on 1-for-12 shooting in a home loss against Denver a night earlier, finished 2 for 10 from the floor.

With more room to move on the floor, Jack and Thompson each made two 3-pointers and Curry added another to highlight a 20-6 run in the first quarter that gave Golden State a 26-16 lead. The Warriors started 5 of 9 from beyond the arc.

Sacramento answered with a 15-5 spurt capped by Toney Douglas' layup and 3-pointer midway through the second quarter. The Kings led 44-41 at the break.

Each team committed nine turnovers in the first half. Both sides struggled to create separation the rest of the way, and neither team looked sharp.

"At this point in the season," Lee said, "I'll take a win any way we can get it."

NOTES: The Warriors are 185-184 all-time against the Kings. The teams play one more time this season on March 27 in Oakland. ... Curry's streak of at least 25 points in five straight games ended. ... Lee had his season-high eighth straight double-double.

THE FACTS: Klay Thompson drilled a game-winning 3-pointer with 7.5 seconds left to play, putting the Golden State Warriors ahead 85-83 and sparking them to an 87-83 victory Wednesday night over the Sacramento Kings at Oracle Arena.

Thompson scored a game-high 20 points as the Warriors (35-27) beat the Kings (21-42) for the first time this season after falling twice at Sacramento. Golden State strengthened its hold on the No. 6 spot in the Western Conference playoff race, extending its lead over No. 7 Houston and No. 8 Utah, which both lost. The Warriors lead the Rockets by two games and the Jazz by 2 1/2.

David Lee added 17 points and 10 rebounds for the Warriors, while Harrison Barnes had 14, Stephen Curry 13 and Jarrett Jack 12.

Jason Thompson led the Kings with 17 points, and Patrick Patterson came off the bench to score 15.

Patterson's 3-point shot put the Kings ahead 83-82 with 1:25 left to play, and that was still the score when Kings guard Toney Douglas missed a long jump shot and Warriors center Andrew Bogut rebounded with under 16 seconds left.

After a Warriors timeout, Curry got the ball, but he was double-teamed. So he passed to Lee, who whipped a pass in the right corner to Thompson, who drilled the 3-point shot.

The Kings, who were coming off a 120-113 loss Tuesday night at home to Denver, had a chance to force overtime, but Tyreke Evans missed a driving bank shot, with Thompson tightly defending.

QUOTABLE: "It was a great look. D-Lee did a great job of hitting me right in the shooting pocket. I got it off quick. My teammate found me, so it was a pretty easy shot, honestly. I love shooting from the corner. I just did a good job keeping my concentration."

THE STAT: The Kings fell to 1-18 against Western Conference teams on the road. They've lost 14 straight on the road against the West.

TURNING POINT: With an 83-82 lead and possession of the ball, the Kings had a chance to pad their lead, but Douglas missed a 19-foot jump shot and Bogut rebounded, giving Klay Thompson a chance to play hero.

QUOTABLE II: "At this stage of the season, sure, you'd love to have him on the floor playing well, but sometimes when you're struggling you've got to tip your hat and say, 'You know what, tonight's not my night,' and sometimes that happens. I went with a group that kept us in the game. We are a play away from winning the basketball game. That group got us back in the game. We were down 10 in the first half, that group got us back in there, close to being even at halftime. That group put us up by one, except for an exceptional shot. Klay misses that shot and we rebound, game over, everything is all ice cream and cake."

HOT: Lee produced his league-leading 41st double-double with his 17 points and 10 boards. He went 8-for-14 from the field. The double-double was his season-high eighth straight.

NOT: One night after shooting 1-for-12 against Toronto, Cousins was just 2-for-10 and scored five points against the Warriors, logging just 20:19 of playing time.

ROOKIE WATCH: Warriors starting small forward Harrison Barnes scored in double figures for the third time in his past four games. Barnes scored 14 points and pulled down four rebounds.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Curry's five-game streak of scoring at least 25 points came to an end. He shot just 3-for-11 from the field and finished with 13 points but drilled a big 3-point shot with just under three minutes left, putting the Warriors up 82-78.

GOOD MOVE: Smart sat Cousins for the entire second quarter -- even when Warrior 7-footer Andrew Bogut was on the floor -- and Sacramento outscored Golden State 23-13 to take a 44-41 halftime lead. Reserve guard Toney Douglas scored seven points during the quarter. Cousins was on the bench again in the fourth when the Kings overcame a 69-63 lead and nearly beat the Warriors.

NOTABLE: The Warriors took a 185-184 lead over Sacramento in their series. ... Golden State shot just 36.0 percent from the field and won for the first time since Feb. 24, 2003, at Denver when shooting 36 percent or worse. They shot 35.8 percent and beat the Nuggets 94-89. ... Patterson tied a career high with his three 3-point baskets. He went 3-for-3 from long range. ... The Kings shot just 39.8 percent from the field. ... In his second game back after missing six straight with back spasms, Bogut scored just two points but grabbed eight rebounds and blocked two shots.
