Trail Blazers-Grizzlies Preview

The surging Memphis Grizzlies know they still have a tough road ahead to secure home-court advantage in the first round of the playoffs, though taking advantage of a stretch featuring sub-.500 opponents can only help.

Memphis hopes to have Zach Randolph back in the lineup as it seeks a 10th victory in its last 11 tries Wednesday night against the visiting Portland Trail Blazers.

The Grizzlies (39-19), currently in fourth place in the Western Conference, are coming off a 108-82 win at Orlando on Sunday in the first of five straight games against teams below the .500 mark.

After taking on Portland, Memphis will face Cleveland and New Orleans before a rematch on the road with the Trail Blazers on Tuesday. The Grizzlies will face the Los Angeles Clippers, Denver and Utah immediately following that stretch.

"It's definitely important to take care of those games," said Tayshaun Prince, who scored 14 points to lead seven players in double figures. "When you lose games like that it puts you in a tough situation. You want to take care of those wins.

"We've been playing some great basketball of late, even though we haven't been playing the teams with great records yet."

The Grizzlies had an eight-game winning streak snapped with Friday's loss to Miami, which is one of only three opponents in the last 10 that has a record over .500.

"A lot of times those tough losses steamroll into a few more," forward Quincy Pondexter said. "We came out (Sunday), we were professionals and we executed and got the win. We took care of business."

They did so without Randolph, who sat out with a sprained left ankle suffered against the Heat. It's uncertain if he'll be ready for Wednesday's contest.

Randolph, who spent his first six seasons with Portland and is averaging 21.3 points in 10 career games against his former team, also missed an 86-84 loss Jan. 4 that marked the Blazers' 14th victory in the last 18 meetings.

LaMarcus Aldridge and J.J. Hickson each had a double-double in that contest for Portland (28-31), which is four games behind Utah for the West's final playoff spot.

Aldridge scored 23 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to help the Blazers beat Charlotte 122-105 to finish 3-1 on their homestand. Rookie Damian Lillard and Nicolas Batum each scored 20 points as Portland shot a season-high 59.8 percent before heading on the road for three straight.

"It's gut-check time," Lillard said. "If we're going to make this push for the playoffs we've got to win on the road."

The Blazers have won seven of the last nine meetings in Memphis, and they may need to win another low-scoring contest to end their six-game road losing streak.

They shot only 40.7 percent in the first matchup last month, but also held the Grizzlies to 39.5 from the field. Neither team has scored more than 97 points in any of the last four meetings.

Memphis leads the league in defense allowing 89.5 points per game, including holding its last six opponents to an average of 83.3 points and 43.3 percent shooting.

Portland, though, is coming off setting a season best for points in a regulation contest and is averaging 113.3 points over its last three.

Gasol scores 23 as Grizzlies beat Blazers 91-85

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) For the second straight home game, the Memphis Grizzlies overcame a significant deficit to escape with a win.

Marc Gasol had 23 points and 12 rebounds, Jerryd Bayless scored all of his 13 points in the final 13 minutes, and the Grizzlies beat the Portland Trail Blazers 91-85 on Wednesday night.

In its last home game, Memphis trailed Dallas by 25 before grabbing a 90-84 win on Feb. 27, the largest home comeback in franchise history. This time, the Grizzlies rallied from 17 down in the third quarter to win their second straight and 10th in the last 11.

"I don't like being down 17 or 25, but being in those situations, we get a taste of it, and we find who we are," said Grizzlies guard Mike Conley, who had 20 points and six assists.

Tony Allen scored 10 points, including two free throws with 4.8 seconds left that provided the final margin. The second half was another display of Memphis' defense, as the Grizzlies outscored Portland 53-35, and held the Trail Blazers to 28 percent shooting over the final two quarters.

"Normally, when we play like that, I think we're not playing hard," Allen said of Memphis' first-half performance. "I think we're not sticking to our game plan, taking those guys for granted. Whenever we key in and focus on the game plan at hand, we all tune in and we're able to climb back into the lead.

"But it's definitely not something we can keep doing."

Damian Lillard scored 20 points on 8-for-16 shooting for Portland. J.J. Hickson had 12 points and 13 rebounds, Eric Maynor also scored 12, and Wesley Matthews finished with 11 points.

Nicolas Batum and LaMarcus Aldridge each added 10. Aldridge also had 10 rebounds and six assists.

All of Batum's points came in the first half, as he and Aldridge were a combined 6 of 23 from the field for the night as Portland shot 41 percent. Batum missed all five of his shots after intermission.

Memphis overcame Portland's final lead with an 11-1 run to go ahead 87-83 with 21 seconds left. Gasol had six points in the stretch, and Bayless had a 3-pointer to start the rally.

"That was a disappointing loss," Portland coach Terry Stotts said. "Maybe we could have executed a little better, but that was a disappointing loss."

Memphis was without leading rebounder Zach Randolph (left ankle sprain) and reserve forward Darrell Arthur (sore neck and back), and early, the absence of two main pieces of the rotation seemed to affect the Memphis offense. Gasol took over the inside scoring load.

"I thought Marc really wanted the ball and was attacking," Memphis coach Lionel Hollins said. "But every night we need Marc to be aggressive. I thought he did an outstanding job of doing that."

In the second half, the Grizzlies stopped the effectiveness of the Portland pick-and-rolls, tightened up on defense and used that to fuel the offense, Stotts said.

"They came out and played a lot harder than we did as far as energy and getting loose balls," Lillard said. "I thought we worked hard to get what we got, but they outworked us, and I thought they definitely turned it up defensively and made more shots."

Portland shot 54 percent in the first half, including Lillard hitting 5 of 7 for 14 points and a 50-38 lead at the break.

The Memphis offense seemed completely out of synch with unusual rotations due to missing frontline players.

"Part of it in the first half was that we were making shots, and they weren't," Stotts said, "so we were playing in transition and flow and not playing against their halfcourt defense."

The Portland lead reached 13 in the half and could have been more, except Lillard's floater at the end of the half came after the horn.

Gasol, who had 10 points in the first half, couldn't explain why the Grizzlies have struggled getting started in their last two home games.

"If I knew it, we wouldn't have it. We would solve it," Gasol said. "At least we can fight back. We showed a lot of heart, but it's not enough. You can get away with it with some teams, but the good ones are going to pull away and go up 30, and then there's no chance."

Portland continued to extend its lead to open the second half, eventually reaching 17 in the third quarter. Hickson and Lillard each had a couple of baskets.

After Portland built the lead to 63-46 near the midway point of the third, Memphis closed the quarter with a 19-4 rally. The last basket came on a 3-pointer from Bayless, his first points of the game, trimming the deficit to 67-65 entering the fourth.

Another 3-pointer from Bayless erased the Trail Blazers' advantage and put the Grizzlies up 72-71 with just more than 9 minutes left.

But after an exchange of leads, Matthews converted a three-point play, and Maynor scored from long range to rebuild the Portland advantage to 82-76.

Memphis then began its final push for the victory.

"We're not always going out there blowing people out," Conley said. "We're winning close games. We're having to come back. Every night is a different night, and for us to win in different ways is good."

NOTES: The Trail Blazers lost their seventh straight road game, and have not won on the road since a 100-98 victory at Minnesota on Feb. 4. ... Memphis F Quincy Pondexter was a game-time decision with a case of food poisoning. He finished with four points on 2-for-6 shooting in 22 minutes. . Lillard connected on his first 3-pointer of the game, giving him 130, most by a rookie since Stephen Curry made 166 in 2009-10. ... Hickson finished the game 6 of 12 from the field. He has shot at least 50 percent in 23 straight games. . Conley had two steals, giving him 50 straight games with at least one. ... Memphis is now 29-2 when they outshoot their opponents. .It was Lillard's 30th game of at least 20 points. He leads all rookies in that category. . Hickson recorded his 33rd double-double, ranking him fourth in the NBA.

THE FACTS: For the second straight home game, the Memphis Grizzlies dug themselves a deep hole, this time a 17-point, third quarter deficit to Portland, and clawed their way out. The Grizzlies closed out the final six and a half minutes with a 15-3 run that led to a 91-85 win. The victory game without the services of power forwards Zach Randolph (sprained ankle) and Darrell Arthur (neck and back soreness). Center Marc Gasol led the team with a game-high 23 points and 12 rebounds. Mike Conley added 20 points and six assists.

QUOTABLE: "We can't keep doing that. Obviously, it might come back to haunt us. Everybody is not going to lose leads like that, but that just shows the character of our team. We are grinders. We all play together and play hard for 48 minutes. That is what the outcome normally is. We come back and rally and get the win, but we can't keep doing that."

THE STAT: Even without their leading rebounders -- Randolph and Arthur -- the Grizzlies managed to outrebound the Trail Blazers 52-38. The 52 rebounds were just four shy of their season high of 56 against Milwaukee on Dec. 19. Sixteen of those boards came on the offensive end, which led the Grizzlies holding a 20-6 edge in second-chance points.

TURNING POINT: After squandering a 63-46 lead in the third quarter and allowing the Grizzlies to take a 74-73 lead in the fourth, Portland regained control and went up 82-76 with 6:32 remaining. But the Grizzlies answered with a 9-0 run to regain the lead at 85-82.

HOT: Gasol came up big on both ends of the floor for the Grizzlies. Offensively, he scored inside and outside for the Grizzlies. And defensively, he forced Portland's LaMarcus Aldridge into taking some difficult shots.

NOT: With no Randolph and Arthur, Aldridge figured to have a big game for the Blazers, as he usually does against the Grizzlies. But Aldridge struggled all night, scoring just 10 points on 2-for-13 shooting from the floor, although he did managed to grab 10 rebounds and dish out six assists.

QUOTABLE II: "It is up hill, but we are still there, even with that loss. We just have to roll some wins together. That will take care of itself, but we have to go into San Antonio and get a win there."

NOTABLE: Former Portland guard Jerryd Bayless played a big part in helping the Grizzlies defeat his former team. Bayless hit a 3 with less than a second remaining in the third quarter to cap a 10-0 run and pull the Grizzlies to within 67-65. He then scored 10 fourth quarter points including a 3 that gave the Grizzlies their first lead since the first quarter. He finished with 13 points. ... Grizzlies forward Tayshaun Prince missed nine of his 12 shots from the floor, but had one of the biggest baskets of the game. Left wide open, Prince finally knocked down a jumper with four minutes remaining that gave the Grizzlies the lead for good, 83-82. Prince then flailed his arms as if to say, "It's about time!" ... Forward Ed Davis didn't exactly shine as Randolph's replacement in the starting lineup. Davis finished with just three points and was 1-for-4 from the floor. He did have six rebounds and a pair of blocked shots. ... The Grizzlies are in the midst of playing five consecutive games against teams with losing records. So far they are 2-0, with a trip to Cleveland Friday next. ... Rookie point guard Damian Lillard led the Blazers with 20 points. But after making seven of his first 10 shots, Lillard missed five of his last six shots. ... The Grizzlies improved to 40-19, the fastest the franchise has ever reached the 40-win mark. ... Portland scored just 35 points in the second half while shooting 28.2 percent. In the first half, the Blazers shot 54 percent and led 50-38.
