Rockets-Mavericks Preview

A win to begin this home-and-home set let the Houston Rockets finally halt the Dallas Mavericks' domination of the series. A victory to close it would further turn the tide and leave these rivals that much closer to having their playoff trends reversed.

Houston can further put the Mavericks' postseason streak in jeopardy and continue its climb up the standings by avoiding a sixth straight loss in Dallas on Wednesday night.

The Rockets (33-28) had lost nine in a row to their Southwest Division rival before rolling to a 136-103 win Sunday. No victory during the Mavericks' streak, including two this season, was decided by more than 10 points.

"We had lost nine straight to them and so it feels good," said Jeremy Lin, who had 21 points and nine assists. "It feels like we got a monkey off our back. We're going to have another tough one at Dallas coming up."

Houston has lost five consecutive trips to Dallas since an overtime win Dec. 18, 2009, a game Dirk Nowitzki left in the second quarter with an injury after scoring five points. That's part of a key trend in this series since the start of 2005-06: Dallas is 22-2 when Nowitzki scores at least 15 points and 1-5 when he doesn't, including two games he missed.

Nowitzki shot 2 for 8 and had eight points Sunday after scoring in double figures in every previous game he had played during 2013.

"We want to get him the ball and we need good things to happen, but the problem was we just couldn't guard these guys," said coach Rick Carlisle, adding that Houston often double-teamed Nowitzki in the first half. "We didn't guard them and that has got to change before Wednesday."

Carlisle's club had a chance to pull within three games of the Rockets for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference by sweeping this home-and-home series. Instead, a loss Wednesday could drop Dallas (26-33) seven games behind Houston, which jumped a half-game ahead of Utah for seventh when the Jazz lost Monday.

The Rockets could move into a tie for sixth if they win Wednesday and Golden State loses to Sacramento. They haven't been to the playoffs since 2009, and Dallas has qualified every year since 2000.

"We're losing and losing (close) games at home, and those are the games you have to win if you want to be in the playoffs," Nowitzki said. "We haven't shown consistently that we can win big games. We have to fight."

Nowitzki likely can't be badly outplayed by Chandler Parsons again if the Mavs are to avoid a fifth loss in six games.

Parsons scored a career-high 32 and went 12 of 13 from the floor Sunday, hitting six 3-pointers. The second-year forward is averaging 24.3 points in the past four games while shooting 65.0 percent, including 16 for 28 from beyond the arc.

"He got his opportunity – great system, great role – and really took off with it similar to me in New York," Lin said. "He deserves everything he's getting. There really is no ceiling."

As the Rockets get increased production from Parsons and continued contributions from James Harden, who has scored more than 20 points in 10 straight games, Dallas likely needs Nowitzki and leading scorer O.J. Mayo to step up.

Mayo is averaging 13.1 points in the last eight games. The Mavs are 16-9 when he scores 19 or more, compared to 10-24 otherwise.

Nowitzki, Mayo help Mavs bounce back, beat Rockets

DALLAS (AP) O.J. Mayo and the Dallas Mavericks were embarrassed by a blowout loss in Houston. Given a chance to atone for it three nights later, they made the most of the opportunity.

Mayo had two big fourth-quarter baskets and a career-high 12 assists, Dirk Nowitzki scored 22 points and the Mavericks hung on to win the quick rematch with the Rockets 112-108 on Wednesday night.

Dallas' humiliating final quarter of garbage time in Houston's 33-point win Sunday was replaced by 12 tense minutes that included two chances for James Harden to tie or give the Rockets the lead in the final 30 seconds.

Harden, who led Houston with 28 points and made all 16 of his free throws, missed a 3-pointer and a layup against the tight defense of Shawn Marion, who matched Nowitzki with 22 points.

"After what happened in Houston, it was embarrassing, as a man, as a player and as a Dallas Maverick," said Mayo, who had 13 points and six rebounds without a turnover. "We really wanted to come in here and show our fans that we are a much better squad."

Harden, who also had nine assists, put the Rockets ahead 104-102 with a 3-pointer with 3:41 remaining, but Mayo answered with a 3 and another jumper to put Dallas up for good at 107-104. Mayo's last assist came on a bucket by Nowitzki that pushed the lead to 109-104.

The Rockets got within one after Harden twice was fouled driving for a layup and hit all four free throws. The Mavericks had to settle for a two-point lead when Marion missed one of two free throws, but their defensive stopper made up for it at the other end.

Officials had to use replay to confirm possession on an out-of-bounds call after both misses by Harden, who was 5 of 17 from the field. The first call in favor of the Rockets was confirmed, giving Harden a second chance. But the second ruling went Dallas' way with 6.4 seconds left, and Darren Collison hit two free throws for the final margin.

"I'm just trying to make it hard for him," Marion said. "Crowd him and don't let him get comfortable. He's a very aggressive player. At the same time, you take a lot of free throws out of the game and he had a rough night."

Chandler Parsons had 23 points for Houston after scoring a career-high 32 on Sunday, while Jeremy Lin scored 12 but sat the entire fourth quarter in favor of backup Patrick Beverley.

"We were prepared for a dogfight and we knew they were going to play extremely hard given the circumstances of what just happened," Parsons said. "I thought we put ourselves in a position to win. It's one that we let slip away."

Nowitzki was called for his fifth foul and a technical midway through the fourth quarter after a rough sequence that ended with the 7-footer getting his shot blocked by the 6-foot-1 Beverley. Nowitzki knocked Carlos Delfino to the floor as he was trying to start a fast break.

Rockets coach Kevin McHale looked primed for a technical a few minutes earlier when Beverley was called for an offensive foul after he ran into Vince Carter while Carter was pursuing Thomas Robinson, whose dunk was waved off.

"There was a lot going on out there," Dallas coach Rick Carlisle said. "We weathered everything tonight, and it is a sign of character."

After getting outscored by Houston 44-17 in the third quarter Sunday, the Mavericks pushed a four-point halftime lead to 13 before letting the Rockets get within 84-83 on a 15-3 spurt late in the third. Carter restored Dallas' four-point lead with a 3-pointer with 14 seconds left.

Lin hit a 3-pointer at the first-half buzzer, but officials overturned a ruling that the basket was good after a lengthy video review. The change gave Dallas a 60-56 halftime lead.

Lin's shot came at the end of a sequence that illustrated the brisk pace of the first half. After a Houston miss, Carter rushed up the floor with 7 seconds left, but Marion's layup was blocked by Parsons. The Rockets managed to get Lin an open shot at the 3-point line in less than 4 seconds.

The Mavericks were shooting nearly 70 percent in the middle of the second quarter, but only led by four because the Rockets made six straight shots, four of them coming in a stretch of six combined baskets between the teams in just 1:23.

Houston's hot streak included three quick 3-pointers that erased most of a 41-31 Dallas lead, the biggest of the first half for the Mavericks. Delfino had two of them.

Nowitzki had eight points in the first quarter after finishing Sunday's blowout loss with that total. Marion had 12 in the first for Dallas, and the pair combined to go 9 of 12 from the field. Mayo had five assists in the first six minutes, and four of them led to layups and one dunk for Marion.

NOTES: G Mike James made his first start for Dallas. He was picked up as a free agent and played on a pair of 10-day contracts before getting a guaranteed deal for the rest of the season. It was James' first start since March 25, 2009, with Washington. ... Harden became the third Rockets player with at least 500 free throws in a season. He's on pace to break Moses Malone's franchise record of 630 from 1981-82. ... Mavericks C Elton Brand had a first-quarter block to pass McHale on the career list. They were tied for 24th at 1,690 blocks when the game started. ... Parsons has the longest 20-point streak of his career at five straight games.

THE FACTS: Finishing with a 10-4 run, the Dallas Mavericks salvaged a 112-108 victory against the Houston Rockets on Wednesday at the American Airlines Center. They also salvaged some of their pride, with the win coming on the heels of an embarrassing 33-point loss in Houston on Sunday.

Shawn Marion and Dirk Nowitzki each scored 23 points and O.J. Mayo tallied 13 points and a career-high 12 assists for the Mavericks (27-33). Marion also played outstanding defense late against James Harden, who led the Rockets (33-29) with 28 points but missed two shots in the final 30 seconds. Chandler Parsons added 23 points and Omer Asik registered 12 points and 15 rebounds.

THE STAT: Houston stayed in the game by going 26-for-33 at the free-throw line, paced by Harden's 16-for-16 effort. Dallas finished 11-for-14 at the stripe.

TURNING POINT: With Dallas leading 110-108, Harden fired an airball from behind the arc with 29.9 seconds left. The Rockets maintained possession, but Harden came up empty again. With Marion shadowing every move, his layup attempt with 6.9 seconds left bounced off the rim. Darren Collison converted two free throws to ice the game.

QUOTABLE II: "Shawn [Marion] had a great all-around game. We needed his points early and throughout the whole game he did a tremendous job on Harden. Harden had a lot of points, but at the end of the game Shawn was the guy who got the key stops."

HOT: Parsons was 5-for-8 from 3-point range on Wednesday and a combined 11-for-15 in the home-and-home set against the Mavericks. ... Dallas shot 71.4 percent (15-for-21) in the first quarter.

NOT: Asik was 4-for-11 at the free-throw line, 1-for-7 in the third quarter. ... Harden was 5-for-17 from the field.

GOOD MOVE: The Mavericks used their 19th starting lineup, with veteran journeyman Mike James making his first start since March 25, 2009 with the Wizards. James replaced Collison in the starting five and finished with eight points, six assists, three rebounds and one turnover. Brandan Wright also joined the starting lineup, replacing Chris Kaman, and chipped in 12 points on 6-for-7 shooting.

BAD MOVE: Nowitzki briefly lost his cool after getting his shot blocked by rookie Patrick Beverley with Dallas leading 100-96 with about five minutes to play. On the way up the court, Nowitzki appeared to push Carlos Delfino from behind and Delfino hit the deck. Nowitzki was whistled for his fifth foul and added insult to injury with a technical foul. Harden made the technical free throw and then knocked down two more from the stripe to pull Houston within 100-99.

ROOKIE WATCH: Houston coach Kevin McHale showed a lot of confidence in rookies Beverley and the recently acquired Thomas Robinson, who were both on the court for the entire fourth quarter. Beverley finished with seven assists and three rebounds and Robinson had eight points, four boards and two blocks.

NOTABLE: The Mavericks won the season series, 3-1. ... Dallas has won the last six meetings against Houston at the American Airlines Center. ... Mayo, whose previous career high was 10 assists vs. Golden State on March 30, 2009, did not turn have a turnover. ... With 35 assists, the Mavericks improved to 4-1 when they have 30 or more. ... Marion (1,618) broke a tie with Rod Strickland for 25th place on the NBA's all-time steals list. ... Vince Carter had 16 points, seven rebounds and two steals off the Dallas bench, including his 1,200th career theft. ... It was Asik's 28th double-double.
