Lakers-Thunder Preview

Kobe Bryant hasn't lost any of his competitive fire despite this being his 17th NBA season, which is a big reason the Los Angeles Lakers have been able to climb back to the .500 mark.

If he can will his team into the playoffs, there's a possibility Tuesday night's road matchup with the Oklahoma City Thunder could be a first-round preview.

Bryant scored 34 points, including the go-ahead layup with nine seconds remaining, as the Lakers (30-30) defeated Atlanta 99-98 on Sunday to get back to the break-even mark for the first time since they were 15-15 on Dec. 28.

He scored 11 points in the fourth quarter, helping Los Angeles to its fifth victory in six tries.

"It was more of a message to my team here to kind of have that will, that hunger, to push through it by any means necessary," Bryant said. "It's just a challenge. The fun comes in the challenge, and we're up for it.

"I think we're starting to get a groove a little bit."

Bryant is averaging 34.8 points over his last five as the ninth-place Lakers try to get into the Western Conference playoff picture. They are within striking distance of Golden State, Utah and Houston for one of the last three spots.

Coach Mike D'Antoni knows Bryant will be the catalyst if Los Angeles is to avoid missing the postseason for the first time since 2004-05.

"I don't know where he's getting his young legs from," said D'Antoni, whose Lakers haven't been over .500 since winning his debut against Brooklyn on Nov. 20 to get to 6-5. "His belief in himself is huge. He's been doing it for years."

Bryant scored 21 points and had a season high-tying 14 assists in a 105-96 home win over the Thunder on Jan. 27. He's averaging 33.3 points over his last six versus Oklahoma City, including last season's five-game loss in the West semifinals.

Slowing Kevin Durant has been Los Angeles' biggest challenge, especially this season. He's averaging 37.7 points in the three meetings, including 36 in a 114-108 win Dec. 7 and 42 in a 116-101 victory Jan. 11.

Durant netted 35 points in Sunday's 108-104 win over the Los Angeles Clippers, helping the Thunder (43-16) hold on after leading by as many as 19 points.

That moved Oklahoma City 1 1/2 games ahead of the Clippers for second place in the West, though it remains three games back of San Antonio.

"We've grown up a lot as a team," Durant said. "We've been through situations like this. We just kept saying, 'Weather the storm, it'll get better.'"

Russell Westbrook, who had 17 points and 13 assists in the last meeting with the Lakers, finished with 29 points and 10 assists Sunday while also keeping his teammates calm during a rough stretch.

Coach Scott Brooks said that has become expected from his point guard.

"His leadership is getting better year by year and it should be," Brooks said. "It was a classic example of what he's done. He's an emotional guy, but he keeps everything together."

Oklahoma City is one of the NBA's best home teams at 26-4, and it has won 18 straight there versus West teams. The Lakers have lost five straight at Chesapeake Energy Arena, including last year's playoffs.

"They probably have the best crowd in the league," Bryant said. "It's incredible."

Thunder hold off Lakers' charge, 122-105

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) Desperately trying to fight their way into the playoffs during an injury-marred season, the Los Angeles Lakers watched as Kobe Bryant grimaced, grabbed his right elbow and headed to the locker room.

They got no sympathy from the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Russell Westbrook had 37 points and 10 rebounds, Kevin Durant scored 26, and Oklahoma City held off a second-half charge to beat the improving Lakers 122-105 on Tuesday night.

Bryant was able to score 30 points after returning from the injury, but a late rally fizzled as the Thunder scored the final 12 points of the game.

"Kobe didn't look hurt to me," Durant said. "We're not going to feel sorry for them. If they're out there playing, then they can play. Kobe looked fine. Dwight (Howard) looked fine.

"We know they're a resilient team. They've been fighting hard all year. They made some shots in that second half."

But Oklahoma City was the only one to connect when it counted the most.

The Thunder led from start to finish, letting their 18-point lead get whittled down to five midway through the fourth quarter. Serge Ibaka, who dodged a suspension after delivering a low blow against Blake Griffin in Oklahoma City's previous game, hit a 3-pointer and Westbrook had a two-handed slam in the Thunder's closing run.

"They're a championship-caliber team, so they're never going to give up and they kept fighting and cut it to five," Durant said. "I think we did a really good job of staying composed throughout that little run that they made and we made some big shots."

Steve Nash matched his season's best with 20 points as the Lakers fell back below .500 after reaching the mark for the first time since December. His 3-pointer got Los Angeles as close as 110-105 with 6:14 remaining, but his team didn't score again.

L.A. fell to 1-11 in road games against the teams that currently occupy the eight Western Conference playoff spots and is now 2 1/2 games behind eighth-place Utah.

"You can always try to find positive things with anything," Bryant said. "But for us right now, we've got to get some wins."

Bryant said he took a shot to the "button" on the end of his elbow and had to figure out a way to adjust his shooting mechanics to deal with what the team called an ulnar nerve contusion.

"Every time you try to bend your elbow or extend it, there's a little resistance and there's a lot of pain," Bryant said.

For a team that has already spent parts of this season without Howard, Nash and Pau Gasol - all of them All-Stars - the news wasn't all that bad for the Lakers.

"I'm going to keep playing," Bryant said. "This is the critical part of the season."

Oklahoma City tied an NBA record with two turnovers. Milwaukee set the record in a game against Indiana on April 1, 2006, and Cleveland tied it in an overtime game against Portland on March 19, 2009.

In recent years, the Thunder have been among the worst teams in the league in turnovers, with Westbrook and Durant among the league leaders in most miscues.

"I think we've done a great job of just learning and trying to get better at it each and every game. Not really focusing on it but just making the right decisions," said Westbrook, who traveled to commit one of the two.

After Nash's 3-pointer got the Lakers within five, Nash and Metta World Peace each missed 3s during a string of four straight empty possessions with L.A. down by six. Ibaka then connected on a 3-pointer from the right corner to help the Thunder start pulling away.

World Peace finished with 16 points and Dwight Howard had six points and 16 rebounds before fouling out with 2:24 remaining.

By the time Bryant went out less than 4 minutes into the game, the Thunder had already delivered an opening 7-0 burst while Los Angeles missed its first 10 shots from the field.

Bryant air-balled his first shot from 3-point range and was grabbing at the elbow, even crossing up arms with Durant after the ball had been stolen away by Durant. Bryant was able to return about 4 1/2 minutes later, making his first shot a left-handed hook. He dribbled predominantly with his left hand and even snagged one rebound by cradling it in his left arm.

But he wouldn't join an injured list that includes Gasol, out two to four more weeks with a foot injury, and reserve Jordan Hill, out for the season after hip surgery.

Oklahoma City also closed the first half with seven straight points to go up 71-55 after Durant's step-back jumper. It was the highest scoring first half of the season for Oklahoma City.

Notes: Durant got his 13th technical foul of the season, three shy of an automatic one-game suspension. Durant, who was on the bench at the time, drew the technical after saying something to referee Joe Crawford as Derek Fisher returned to the sideline for a timeout after getting his own technical from referee Kevin Fehr. Fisher was arguing a personal foul called against Kendrick Perkins. ... Oklahoma City has not played a home game decided by less than 10 points since Dec. 28. The Thunder's last 12 wins at Chesapeake Energy Arena have been by at least 16 points - and an average of 24.6 points. Their two losses were by 17 to Brooklyn and 10 to Miami. ... The NBA announced Tuesday that both teams will play preseason games overseas in the fall. Oklahoma City will face Fenerbahce in Istanbul and Philadelphia in Manchester, England. The Lakers will play Golden State twice, in Beijing and Shanghai.

THE FACTS: The Oklahoma City Thunder tied an all-time NBA record with just two turnovers and used lockdown defense to shut out the Los Angeles Lakers over the last six minutes of the game to win 122-105. Thunder point guard Russell Westbrook led all scorers with 37 points on 15-for-29 shooting. Westbrook also led the Thunder in rebounds with 10 and added five assists. Kevin Durant had 26 points, nine rebounds and three blocks. Serge Ibaka added 13 points, six boards and a couple of blocks.

Kobe Bryant led the Lakers with 30 points and was bothered by a bruised elbow for much of the game. Point guard Steve Nash had 20 points (tying his season-high) and Metta World Peace added 16 points. World Peace rolled his right ankle in the last seconds of the game and was being X-rayed in the L.A. locker room. Dwight Howard was bothered by a sore back most of the game and scored just six points on 1-for-7 shooting. Howard pulled down a game-high 16 rebounds.

The Thunder also got big games from their backup point guards. Reggie Jackson hit a couple of big layups to stave off a late Laker rally, finishing with 10 points on 5-for-7 shooting while former Laker Derek Fisher hit a couple of big 3s and also finished with 10 points on 3-for-4 shooting.

The Thunder dominated in the paint (52-22) and on the fast break (22-6) and held the Lakers to just 40.3 percent shooting. OKC was charged with two turnovers but they thought they really only had one. Ronnie Brewer thought his pass to Nick Collison was tipped out of bounds by a Laker but the officials ruled it out on Brewer.

QUOTABLE: "Well, who would have thought we'd only end up with two turnovers when we're averaging 15-16 a game? I like our guys figuring out ways not to turn it over. It was just one of those games. The defense was really key too."

THE STAT: The Lakers scored just 16 points in the fourth quarter and came up empty over the last six minutes. The Thunder held L.A. to 26.3 percent shooting in the fourth quarter and the Lakers missed their last 10 shots. That, coupled with an 0-for-10 start to the game gave the Lakers (courtesy the Thunder defense) about as bad a beginning and ending as you could come up with.

QUOTABLE II: "The slow start didn't help, turnovers (16), we missed foul shots (nine) and wide open shots. We had to battle through some injuries and battle through foul trouble. We had to play a little bit better to beat a good team and we didn't do it."

TURNING POINT: The Thunder never trailed and led by as many as 18 but the Lakers closed the gap to 10 points in the third quarter and on down to just five in the fourth but that's when the Thunder put the clamps on L.A.'s offense and went on a 12-0 run to close the game.

QUOTABLE III: "We don't have the athleticism that they do so if we allow them to play to their strengths we're going to be in trouble. We have to be able to alter that."

HOT: Westbrook was 6-for-10 (13 points) in the first quarter and was 9-for-16 (19 points) at halftime. ... Durant was 7-for-12 (20 points) in the first 24 minutes. ... Bryant was 5-for-9 (18 points) at halftime. ... Nash was 6-for-8 in the second half.

NOT: The Lakers missed their first 10 shots and turned the ball over five times in the first six minutes of the game. ... Nash and Howard were each 1-for-7 at halftime. ... Howard did not take a shot in the second half. ... Durant was 2-for-10 in the last 24 minutes. ... Bryant was 3-for-10 in the second half.

INSIDE THE ARENA: The 97th consecutive sell-out inside Chesapeake Energy Arena went nuts during the break between the third and fourth quarters when a fan swished a half-court shot and won $20,000. Heath Kufahl, who said after the game he's actually a Lakers fan, is a high school teacher whose wife has cancer. The couple has seven children.

GOOD MOVE: Early in the game Ibaka went high and blocked a shot from Howard then blocked a follow shot from Earl Clark to get the home crowd roaring early.

BAD MOVE: Durant keeps creeping closer and closer to a suspension-earning 16th technical foul. He picked up his 13th when he said something to lead official Joey Crawford after teammate Derek Fisher had been given a technical for arguing with official Kevin Fehr over a foul called on Nick Collison. So what were the magic words Durant said to Crawford? "I asked him, hey can I talk to you? And he got me with one," Durant told reporters after the game.

NOTABLE: Before Tuesday the last time Oklahoma City had fewer than five turnovers in a game was in the second round of the 2012 playoffs against ... the Lakers (four). ...The 37 points OKC scored in the first quarter and the 71 the Thunder had at halftime were both season-highs for those points in a game...
