Knicks-Cavaliers Preview

The Atlantic Division-leading New York Knicks haven't managed to beat the Cleveland Cavaliers on the road in over six years, and Carmelo Anthony hasn't been much help, either.

The expected return of Kyrie Irving may keep it that way Monday night when Anthony and the Knicks make their first of two visits this season.

New York (35-21) has won four of the last six meetings with Cleveland (20-39), but all of those victories have come at home. The Knicks have been held to an average of 93.0 points while dropping 10 in a row at Quicken Loans Arena since last winning there Nov. 29, 2006.

Anthony hasn't been much of a factor in three visits with the Knicks, averaging 18.0 points on 38.8 percent shooting there compared to 22.0 while shooting 50.0 percent in playing three of the four home wins. He sat out New York's 103-102 home win on Dec. 15 due to a sprained left ankle and had only 12 points on 5 for 13 shooting in a 98-90 defeat in the most recent game in Cleveland on April 20.

The superstar forward and the Knicks may be in for another tough matchup with Irving expected back from a hyperextended right knee that has sidelined him for three games. The guard has averaged 28.0 points over his last three meetings against them and scored a career-high 41 in that December loss.

Irving made it through a full practice on Sunday and took part in the Cavs' morning shootaround Monday. Barring any setbacks, coach Byron Scott said Irving will start against the Knicks.

Scott's patience with Irving's injury may have been challenged following Friday's 105-89 defeat to the Los Angeles Clippers after Cleveland averaged 102.0 points winning the previous two games without him.

Irving leads the Cavs with 23.3 points per game and 5.6 assists, but he's averaged 17.5 over the last four games despite a 35-point effort in a 105-100 win over New Orleans on Feb. 20.

Dion Waiters is looking to continue his strong stretch, averaging 22.8 points while shooting 56.7 percent in four games. The rookie missed the last meeting with the Knicks due a sore ankle.

New York squandered a 16-point lead while matching its season high with 18 turnovers as a three-game winning streak ended with Sunday's 99-93 home defeat to Miami.

"I think we are disappointed because we had an opportunity to win a ballgame here at home against the champs," said guard Jason Kidd, who had 14 points in his second game off the bench after losing his starting job. "So it's something we can look at and get better at with those mistakes, especially later in the game."

Anthony did his part against the Heat, scoring 32 points, and has averaged 31.6 over the past five games.

Tyson Chandler had 10 points and eight rebounds Sunday, but is looking for another strong performance against the Cavs. The All-Star center scored 23 points while pulling down 10 boards against them Dec. 15, but was held to four and eight, respectively, in the last visit to Cleveland.

Knicks rally without Melo, beat Cavaliers 102-97

CLEVELAND (AP) Carmelo Anthony tripped, stumbled and fell.

The New York Knicks picked themselves up and won without him.

Amare Stoudemire scored 22 points, J.R. Smith added 18 and the Knicks overcame a 22-point deficit and the loss of Anthony, their All-Star forward who went out with a knee injury in the first half, to beat the Cavaliers 102-97 on Monday night and end a 10-game losing streak in Cleveland.

Steve Novak made three of New York's seven 3-pointers in the fourth quarter and added 15 points as the Knicks, sparked by their second unit, shook off a tough home loss on Sunday, when they blew a 16-point lead to Miami.

The Knicks trailed 52-30 in the second quarter when Anthony got twisted up after catching a pass near midcourt and dropped to the floor. Following the game, Anthony said the knee has been bothering him for several weeks.

"It's just sore, not pain, sore and stiffness," Anthony said in a crowded corridor outside New York's locker room. "It's been going on for a while now."

Anthony, who entered the game tied with Oklahoma City's Kevin Durant for the NBA scoring lead, said he underwent an MRI "a couple days ago." He said the test results were negative, and he does not yet know if he'll be able to play Wednesday night when the Knicks visit Detroit.

"Today I just woke up and you know how some days you really don't feel right," he said. "I came out here and I tried to warm up and I thought it was going to loosen up before the game, but some of the things that I was doing I felt like I was dragging it."

Kyrie Irving scored 22 points in his first game back after missing Cleveland's past three with a hyperextended right knee. Irving added six assists and five rebounds in 36 minutes.

After New York's Jason Kidd split a pair of free throws with 6 seconds left, the Cavaliers had a chance to tie it.

Coach Byron Scott put the ball in the hands of Irving, who scored a career-high 41 against the Knicks on Dec. 15. The dazzling point guard couldn't beat Tyson Chandler off the dribble and then had his 3-pointer with 3.5 seconds left blocked cleanly by New York's 7-foot-1 center.

"I knew they were going to him," Chandler said. "I knew if I got switched on him I would force him to drive. He went for the 3-point shot and I kind of baited him into shooting where I could still get to the shot."

Smith was fouled and made two free throws in the final second to close out a win the Knicks needed badly. They are just 18-16 after opening the season 18-5.

New York's bench outscored the Knicks starters 70-32.

Knicks coach Mike Woodson sat Stoudemire for the final eight minutes on Sunday, prompting some serious second-guessing by New York's fans and media. Before facing the Cavs, Woodson said he would use Stoudemire when the matchups were right and the occasion called for the power forward.

With Anthony out, Woodson needed every second he could get out of Stoudemire, who powered inside for a critical putback with 39.5 seconds left to put the Knicks ahead 99-95.

"I've been a competitor my whole career," Stoudemire said. "I've had a lot of success in this league so far. I know how the game is played. Whenever my number's called I'll be ready and tonight I was ready."

Irving responded for the Cavs with a left-handed layup, but on New York's next trip, Chandler did a nice job tapping out a miss by Stoudemire and Cleveland had to foul Kidd, who couldn't close it out at the line and the Knicks had to turn to their defense to complete the comeback.

The Knicks were down by 22 and looking pathetic when Anthony caught a pass from Kidd near midcourt, tripped over his own feet and hit the deck. He stayed on his back for several seconds, got up and without talking to New York's trainers headed directly to the locker room. Anthony didn't appear to be injured and seemed to be more embarrassed than anything.

With Anthony out and icing his knee, the Knicks went on a 17-4 run and closed within 61-49 at halftime - not bad, considering how poorly they had played.

"I was about ready to leave the arena," Woodson said. "We couldn't get any stops. It was awful. I thought maybe we were tired or we were drained."

Woodson started Stoudemire and Smith in the second half and the Knicks opened the third with a 15-3 spurt, catching the Cavs at 64-all.

The Cavs were without rookie starters Dion Waiters and Tyler Zeller, who were both stricken with a nasty stomach virus over the weekend. They were taken to the hospital to get fluids, but were resting at home during the game.

Cleveland's Marreese Speights made his first 10 shots and finished with 23 points. Luke Walton added a career-high 12 assists for the Cavs, who were in control but wound up losing at home to the Knicks for the first time since 2006.

"We're not that good yet to be able to turn that switch on and off," C.J. Miles said. "We've got to play that way all the time. We've got to play hard all the time. There's talent on the team, but there's not enough years to go with the talent. You live and learn, but we should have learned by now."

NOTES: It was New York's first win when trailing by at least 20 since Dec. 18, 2009 vs. the Los Angeles Clippers. ... Anthony had six points and three turnovers before he got hurt. ... Knicks C Marcus Camby played for the first time since Jan. 10. He had been sidelined with plantar fasciitis. ... Former Knicks sartorial star Walt "Clyde" Frazier received a nice ovation when he was shown on the arena's scoreboard. Frazier played 66 games for Cleveland in the 1970s after he was traded by New York. ... According to Forbes, Cavs owner Dan Gilbert is worth $3.5 billion. In the magazine's annual ranking of the world's billionaires, Gilbert is 348th. He has added more than $1.5 billion to his net worth since September - and $2 billion over the last year. Gilbert controls about 40 companies.

THE FACTS: Power forward Amar'e Stoudemire scored 22 points and shooting guard J.R. Smith collected 18 points, seven rebounds, and seven assists as the New York Knicks stormed back to beat the Cleveland Cavaliers 102-97. New York rallied from a 22-point deficit despite losing small forward Carmelo Anthony to a right knee injury in the second quarter. Center Marreese Speights scored a game-high 23 points for Cleveland, while point guard Kyrie Irving had 22 points and six assists. The Knicks snapped their 10-game losing streak at Quicken Loans Arena, dating back to Nov. 29, 2006.

THE STAT: The Knicks' six substitutes combined to outscore their starting lineup 70-32. No New York starter reached double digits in points, but Stoudemire, Smith, small forward Steve Novak (15), and point guard Jason Kidd (12) all did off the bench. "It really showed a lot of heart from everybody the way we came back," said Knicks starting point guard Raymond Felton, who had eight points and 10 assists. "Once we cut (Cleveland's lead) down to 12 by halftime, we were all thinking, 'It's a ballgame or something.' Everybody stepped up tonight, especially those guys."

TURNING POINT: The Cavaliers built a 52-30 lead just 4 1/2 minutes into the second quarter by making 22 of their first 27 shots (81.5 percent). Anthony exited less than one minute later after slipping near midcourt -- and New York's rally was on. Stoudemire made two free throws to start a 10-0 run that helped the Knicks pull within 61-49 at the half. New York eventually went ahead for good at 90-87 on a Kidd 3-pointer with 4:58 left in the fourth. It marked the Knicks' first comeback win from 20 or more points down since Dec. 18, 2009 against the Clippers.

QUOTABLE II: "It's human nature (to ease up with a big lead), but that goes back to this being a learning experience for our team. A couple of guys were getting tired, and you could see it out there. Our lack of intensity kind of cost us."

HOT: Stoudemire scored 12 points in the second half, while Smith and Novak each had 11 as the Knicks outscored the Cavaliers 53-36. ... Novak was 3-for-5 on 3-pointers, raising his season percentage to .440, which ranks sixth in the NBA. ... Atlantic Division leader New York is 36-21 and pulled within 1 1/2 games of Indiana for the second-best record in the Eastern Conference. ... Cleveland power forward Luke Walton dished out a career-high 12 assists in 29 minutes. ... Speights scored 21 points in the first half. He is the first NBA player to shoot 10-for-10 in a half since Chicago point guard Derrick Rose against Oklahoma City on March 18, 2009.

NOT: Knicks small forward James White started, but only played four minutes and scored two points before being benched for the rest of the night. The third-year pro has one basket and two points over his last four contests. ... Anthony was 1-for-5 shooting with three turnovers before being hurt. The six-time NBA All-Star said he has been battling stiffness in his right knee "for a while now." ... Cavaliers shooting guard Wayne Ellington made his first start with the team, but was 2-for-7 from the field with zero assists. ... Cleveland shot 15-for-46 (32.6 percent) over the final 31 1/2 minutes. ... Speights went 0-for-4 from the field in the second half.

GOOD MOVE: Stoudemire has been placed on a strict 30-minute per game limit by the Knicks' medical staff because of his chronic left knee problems. Woodson used him for 32 against the Cavaliers because he was so effective. Stoudemire shot 10-for-15 and grabbed six rebounds. "Amar'e was fantastic, and he stepped up and played tonight," Woodson said. "I went over his limit a little bit, so oops."

BAD MOVE: Cavaliers coach Byron Scott inexplicably used small forward Alonzo Gee to guard Stoudemire one-on-one for four minutes late in the fourth quarter -- not Speights -- with disastrous defensive results. "I've been a competitor my whole career and I've had a lot of success in this league so far," Stoudemire said. "Whenever my number is called, I'll be ready, and tonight I was ready."

NOTABLE: Anthony said an MRI taken late last week showed no structural damage to his right knee. He did not rule out playing Wednesday in Detroit. ... Cavaliers shooting guard Dion Waiters (flu) and center Tyler Zeller (flu) spent time in the hospital Saturday after falling ill and were not in uniform. ... Irving returned to action after missing three games with a hyperextended right knee.
