Thunder-Clippers Preview

There's little argument the Los Angeles Clippers are serious championship contenders, and their recent surge - especially the dominance during it - shows their potential to accomplish that goal.

The Oklahoma City Thunder may need to improve their game on the road if they plan to make another run to the NBA Finals.

Los Angeles seeks a fifth consecutive victory while dealing Oklahoma City a fourth straight road loss in Sunday's matchup of division leaders.

The Clippers have been on a roll since Chris Paul returned from a bruised right kneecap and have won eight of their last nine games, with the victories coming by an average of 15.5 points.

Paul finished with 15 assists and Jamal Crawford scored a game-high 24 points as Los Angeles (43-18) turned it on late in a 105-89 win at Cleveland on Friday. Despite their recent success - the only loss during the run was to West-leading San Antonio on Feb. 21 - coach Vinny Del Negro knows it will only get tougher moving forward for the Pacific Division leaders.

"There are no easy games. I don't care who you're playing," Del Negro said.

Crawford led the surge off the bench Friday, as the reserves scored at least 50 points for the 10th time. The Clippers are averaging an NBA-best 40.6 points off the bench.

"When the second unit plays like that, we take the game of this basketball team to another level," reserve Ronny Turiaf told the team's official website. "We have so many finishers that can finish at the basket and so many guys who can shoot 3s or score from the mid-range. I think we can do things at a very high level."

Oklahoma City, though, hasn't seemed too threatened.

Kevin Durant scored 35 points and Russell Westbrook added 23 as the Northwest Division-leading Thunder (42-16) beat the Clippers 117-111 in overtime Nov. 21, as Paul shot only 2 of 14 and finished with nine points.

Durant then had 32 points to help overcome 31 and 11 rebounds from Blake Griffin in a 109-97 road win over the Paul-less Clippers on Jan. 22. Since that victory, though, Oklahoma City has dropped six of eight away from home, including Friday's 105-103 loss at Denver as Ty Lawson scored with less than one second remaining.

Coach Scott Brooks still was pleased with the effort after his team's three-game winning streak was snapped.

"We always seem to somehow, someway, fight back and give ourselves a chance to win," Brooks said. "They made one more play than us. That's just the way it is. We have to figure it out going into the next game and play a little bit better."

Westbrook finished with a season-high 38 points and is averaging 30.2 while hitting 52.9 percent from 3-point range over his last six.

"He's a passionate player," Brooks said. "Russell never leaves the game saying, 'I wish I would have played harder'. When you have a team full of guys like that like we do, and they do too, you live with the results."

The Thunder are just 16-12 on the road and 5-8 versus teams with a record currently above .500, though Durant leads the NBA at 30.5 points per game away from home.

Oklahoma City leads the league in scoring, averaging 106.7 points, but the Clippers rank fourth in defense, allowing only 93.8 per game.

Thunder holds off Clippers to win 108-104

LOS ANGELES (AP) With Oklahoma City trying to hold off another marquee team, Russell Westbrook took charge - in the huddle. He urged his Thunder teammates to keep their composure, set screens and play defense.

They listened and turned away a late rally by the Los Angeles Clippers to win 108-104 on Sunday in a matchup of Western Conference contenders.

"It was a good road win for us in a playoff-type atmosphere," said Westbrook, who had 29 points and 10 assists. "We did a good job of keeping their crowd out of the game."

Kevin Durant poured in 35 points and Serge Ibaka had 16 as Oklahoma City ended a three-game road skid, bouncing back less than 48 hours after losing at Denver. They also completed a season sweep of the Clippers, who are chasing the Thunder and NBA-best San Antonio in the West.

"We weren't in a panic mode," Westbrook said. "We just wanted to win."

Chris Paul scored 26 points and Blake Griffin and Jamal Crawford added 20 points apiece for the Clippers, whose four-game winning streak ended in their third loss to the Thunder this season. Paul made all nine of his free throws to help his team go 19 for 22 from the line.

"We came up short, and it seemed like every time something happened, we just couldn't get over the hump," Paul said. "They got the timely calls when they needed them, but they played a pretty good game."

The referees were busy for much of the day, with the Clippers called for 26 fouls to the Thunder's 22 in a physical game that featured double technicals on Caron Butler and Kendrick Perkins for their verbal exchange and Ibaka's flagrant-1 foul on Griffin.

"It's always going to be a tough, chippy game any time we play them because we're both pretty physical teams with physical bigs, so there's a lot of pushing and all that down low," Griffin said. "I guess it's tough to officiate and know what to call and what not to, but they seemed to know today what to call."

The Clippers had four players in foul trouble in the second half: Griffin, Butler, Lamar Odom and Matt Barnes. Griffin fouled out with 59 seconds left. They went 9 for 24 from 3-point range and had 21 turnovers, including 16 in the first half - their most in a half this season.

"That's embarrassing. That's crazy. That's not like us," Paul said. "In the first half, they just did a good job of mucking the lane up. Every time I came down court, I saw a wall. They basically trapped me into ball screens. In the second half, we brought L.O. in and we went small, which opened the court up. And once we opened the court up, we could get into the lane and make plays and fire up shots."

Los Angeles came in trailing the Thunder by a half-game for second in the West, but played from behind nearly the entire game. The Clippers trimmed a 19-point deficit to 82-73 at the end of the third. Odom hit a 3-pointer and Paul completed a three-point play to give them the momentum and get the crowd back into the game.

"There's no such thing as moral victories to us," Griffin said. "We've been in this situation before, but we don't want to put ourselves in that situation. We've got to be better from start to finish to beat a team like this."

The Clippers outscored the Thunder 12-5 to open the fourth. Paul had six points, including a driving layup and a floater in the lane over Durant. Griffin then fed Crawford in the right corner for a 3-pointer that left the Clippers trailing 91-90.

The Thunder responded with six straight points, but Los Angeles rallied again. Barnes hit back-to-back 3-pointers on offensive rebounds to get the Clippers within three. Ibaka chopped Griffin in the right hip before Barnes' second 3 went in, with Griffin collapsing to the court and Ibaka receiving the flagrant.

"It's basketball, man," Griffin said. "Sometimes you take things a little too far, but I wasn't provoking (Ibaka) or anything like that."

Said Thunder coach Scott Brooks: "It was a scrum and both were battling for position."

A video review confirmed the call and Griffin went to the line, missing the first and making the second. The Clippers retained possession and Crawford hit a 3-pointer to give them their first lead of the game at 100-99 with 1:30 to play.

"He told us to keep playing," Durant said of Westbrook. "Everyone in the huddle was calm. We had a tough stretch but it was about how we bounced back."

The Thunder scored nine of the final 13 points.

Brooks credited Westbrook for instilling calm in the late going.

"His leadership is getting better year by year and it should be," he said. "Tonight was a classic example of what he's done. He's an emotional guy, but he keeps everything together."

The Thunder reached its first double-digit lead in the second during a 12-2 run that made it 53-37. Durant and Thabo Sefolosha hit back-to-back 3-pointers en route to a 54-41 lead at the break.

"We were moving the ball and doing a good job of closing the paint up," Durant said. "We eliminated some of these big-time plays."

Besides the turnovers, the Clippers were just 2 of 11 from 3-point range, missing four straight to close the second quarter.

NOTES: The Thunder improved to 13-3 in games played after a loss. ... The Clippers fell to 23-7 at home. ... Griffin has 10 straight games with 16-plus points, seven-plus rebounds and two-plus assists, the longest such streak in the league this season.

THE FACTS: Thunder point guard Russell Westbrook finished the game the way he started it Sunday afternoon, with unwavering confidence and execution. Westbrook scored 10 of his 29 points in the final five minutes to lift Oklahoma City past the Clippers, 108-104, at Staples Center. With the victory, the Thunder held on to second place in the Western Conference and set the tone for a potential second-round playoff matchup with the third-place Clippers.

THE STAT: Both teams combined for 48 fouls, 56 free throw attempts, two technical fouls and a flagrant 1 that will be remembered should these teams meet again in the spring.

QUOTABLE: "It was a good win, a good road win for us. It was definitely a physical game in a playoff-type atmosphere."

TURNING POINT: The Thunder led by 19 points with about four minutes remaining in the third quarter and appeared well on their way to a 3-0 season sweep of the Clippers. But the hosts didn't throw in the towel, instead cutting the deficit to nine on a three-point play by Chris Paul at the end of the third. A 10-0 run put L.A. within two points midway through the final quarter, and the Clippers eventually moved ahead, 100-99, on a 3-point basket by Jamal Crawford with 1:30 left. After a Thunder timeout, Westbrook drove straight down the lane and laid the ball in to regain the lead. Clippers forward Blake Griffin was called for an offensive foul on the other end while tipping in a miss by Paul, then fouled out on Serge Ibaka's three-point play off a Westbrook assist with 59 seconds on the clock. The play extended Oklahoma City's lead to 104-100. The Clippers cut the deficit back to two with 47 seconds remaining, but Westbrook hit a baseline jumper with 26 seconds left for the final dagger.

HOT: Westbrook, who came in shooting 35.2 percent from the floor in his career against the Clippers, the lowest mark of any NBA opponent, showed he was ready to buck that trend by scoring 14 points in the first quarter on 6-for-9 shooting. He finished 11-for-20 from the field and also dished out 10 assists. Kevin Durant dented the Clippers with a team-high 35 points and nine rebounds. He had 20 points in the first half, just the second time this season he has hit the mark in the opening 24 minutes. Griffin and Crawford had the hot hand for the Clippers, scoring 20 points apiece and combining to shoot 15-for-27.

NOT: The Clippers committed 10 turnovers in the opening quarter and were credited with 16 at the half, the most of any half this season. They finished with 21, resulting in 24 points for the Thunder. Griffin picked up two fouls in the first 4:09 of the game, taking a seat until the 8:54 mark of the second. His replacement, Lamar Odom, had three points, three fouls and three turnovers in five minutes of action, leaving seldom-used forward Ryan Hollins to come off the bench and play alongside Ronny Turiaf for the final 2:24 of the opening quarter. Hollins and Turiaf were hardly a front line that could cause Oklahoma City problems.

QUOTABLE II: "The turnovers in the first half really put us back on our heels and gave them a nice cushion. We could never get any rhythm because of our turnovers."

GOOD MOVE: After the Clippers had taken their first lead of the game with 90 seconds remaining, Oklahoma City coach Scott Brooks didn't get fancy during the timeout, instead instructing Westbrook to drive right through the teeth of L.A.'s defense. Westbrook was hardly challenged as he tore through the lane and flipped the ball over the rim, sending a hush over the sold-out crowd.

BAD MOVE: Ibaka may have lost some respect around the league after he appeared to hit Griffin in the groin as the jockeyed under the basket during a made 3-pointer by Clippers forward Matt Barnes with 1:52 left. The basket cut the deficit to 99-96. The officials reviewed the play and called a flagrant 1 foul on Ibaka. After Griffin made one of two free throws, the Clippers secured two offensive rebounds on the ensuing possession before Crawford hit the 3-pointer that briefly gave L.A. the lead. Thanks to Ibaka, the trip down the floor resulted in seven points for the Clippers and nearly led to an unforgettable loss by the Thunder.

QUOTABLE III: "It's not anything [where] I want to try to hurt him. I'm not that kind of person. I just try to play. [Griffin] grabbed my jersey first. I wanted to try to defend myself."

NOTABLE: The Clippers fell to 0-4 against the league's top three teams in the last six weeks. They lost by 12 to visiting Oklahoma City on Jan. 22, by 21 at Miami on Feb. 8 and by 26 against visiting San Antonio on Feb. 21. ... Thunder starting center Kendrick Perkins scored on a dunk midway through the third quarter, his only basket in three games against the Clippers this season. ... Oklahoma City entered the game No. 1 in the league in free-throw percentage and the Clippers No. 27, but it was L.A. that shot 86.4 percent (19-22) compared to 73.5 percent (25-34) for the Thunder. ...
