Raptors-Bucks Preview

The Milwaukee Bucks are starting to find ways to win close games.

Lately, they've always figured out how to beat the Toronto Raptors.

Milwaukee goes for a ninth straight win over the Raptors - and seventh in a row at home in this series - on Saturday night.

After losing three straight by a total of six points, the Bucks (28-28) moved back to .500 with Tuesday's 95-90 road win over Dallas and a 110-107 victory at Houston the following night.

Monta Ellis, whose 27-footer before the buzzer was the difference against the Rockets, had team highs with 49 points and 22 assists during the two-game Texas sweep. He also finished with six steals in each contest to raise his season average to an Eastern Conference-best 2.0.

"He's all over the floor," said coach Jim Boylan, whose team has played six consecutive games decided by five points or fewer - winning half of those. "... He's doing everything for us right now. I look at the guy, and I don't know if anyone in the league is playing as hard as he is right now."

The Raptors (23-36) need someone to step up as they begin their four-game trip following Friday's 93-81 loss to Central Division-leading Indiana. Toronto, losers of three straight and four of five since a season high-tying 5-0 run, trails the eighth-place Bucks by 6 1/2 games.

"We have no choice but to come out tomorrow and play our best basketball," said swingman DeMar DeRozan, who finished with nine points on 2-of-10 shooting on Friday after scoring 59 in the previous two. "We've had three tough games and we've been struggling, so we have to come out and bounce back."

The Raptors, though, don't have history on their side against the Bucks, dropping 12 of the last 14 after a 107-96 home loss Jan. 13.

Toronto's last win in Milwaukee was 91-87 on Nov. 1, 2008.

Raptors newcomer Rudy Gay would like to change that, even if that means playing through minor back spasms for a second straight game.

"I tried to play through it because it's not the time to sit out," said Gay, who is averaging 20.5 points and 6.7 rebounds in 13 games since being acquired from Memphis.

Gay totaled 30 points and 13 boards in two games versus Milwaukee this season while with the Grizzlies.

Veteran guard J.J. Redick will get his first look at the Raptors in a Bucks uniform after facing them three times this season with Orlando.

Redick has hit half of his 28 shots and is averaging 14.7 points with his new team.

Bucks point guard Brandon Jennings has just 27 points since Redick arrived, but he seems more concerned about the Bucks climbing back to the break-even point than his 10-for-30 shooting over the last three games.

"We're just getting stops and we're just countering on the offensive end," said Jennings, who had 19 points and 10 assists on Jan. 13. "We're just getting easier buckets and we're taking our time more."

Milwaukee has dropped five of seven at home.

Toronto's season-best three-game road winning streak ended with Wednesday's 103-92 loss to Cleveland.

Bucks beat Raptors 122-114 in overtime

MILWAUKEE (AP) Monta Ellis did it - again.

Ellis scored six of his 23 points in overtime and Ersan Ilyasova and Brandon Jennings added five apiece in the extra period to spark the Milwaukee Bucks to a 122-114 victory over the Toronto Raptors on Saturday night.

Ellis was the star of the Bucks' 110-107 victory over the Houston Rockets on Wednesday night. He scored 27 points, but it was his last shot, a 3-pointer at the buzzer, that sealed the win.

Against Toronto, Ellis was 9 of 18 from the floor and had five assists and rebounds and three steals.

"We played hard and found a way to finish the game," Ellis said. "These last few games, I'm just taking what the defense is giving me."

Ellis likes the impact that newly acquired J.J. Redick has had.

"Adding J.J. to the team stretches the defense and opens up a lot of things for Brandon and me," Ellis said. Redick was acquired Feb. 21 in a trade with Orlando.

Ilyasova finished with 29 points and 11 rebounds, while Jennings had a career-high 19 assists, including one in overtime for Milwaukee.

"They executed their plays in that overtime very well," Kyle Lowry said after finishing with his first triple-double this season. "They jumped out to a 6-0 lead in overtime and we kind of had to play catch up from there."

Lowry had 10 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists, Alan Anderson scored 21 points off the bench and Amir Johnson added 19 for Toronto, which lost for the fourth consecutive time and fifth in six games since tying a season best with a five-game winning streak.

Toronto was without Rudy Gay, the team's leading scorer at 18 points per game, who was a game-time decision due to back spasms.

"I loved our fight with Rudy being out," Toronto's head coach Dwane Casey said. "Our guys are pulling together, pulling for each other."

Tied at 104 at the end of regulation, Larry Sanders dunked in Ellis' missed shot to put the Bucks ahead 106-104 for good. Then, Ellis drove the lane, passed to Ilyasova who made the layup. He followed that with a 3-point play and the Bucks had a 111-104 lead. Lowry hit a wide-open 3 for Toronto, but Ellis scored on a layup. DeMar DeRozan answered with a layup.

Ellis hit an open 21-foot jumpshot to push the lead to 115-109.

On Toronto's next possession, DeRozan made a driving layup. Jennings buried a 3 from the corner baseline with 39.3 seconds left. After a timeout, DeRozan fouled out after getting tangled up with Jennings with 29.9 seconds left. Toronto fouled Jennings who sank two free throws. Another 3 by Lowry pulled the Raptors to 120-114.

Ellis made two free throws for the final points. Toronto worked the ball to Anderson who fired up a shot and missed. Jennings grabbed the rebound as time expired.

Ellis scored eight points in the fourth quarter, but it wasn't enough as John Lucas hit three 3s and Johnson and Anderson each added six. Anderson tied the game at 104 when he took a pass from Landry Fields, faked Sanders to the floor and slammed in the ball. Fields scored 15 points for Toronto.

NOTES: Toronto's last win in Milwaukee was 91-87 on Nov. 1, 2008. ... The Bucks' eight-game winning stretch over Toronto is their longest active streak against any opponent. ... The Bucks came in with a 6 1/2-game lead over Toronto in the eighth playoff spot. ... John Lucas III finished with 16 points for his 12th double-double this season. THE FACTS: Ersan Ilyasova scored five of his 29 points in overtime, and Brandon Jennings had a career-high 19 assists to go with 11 points, as the Milwaukee Bucks earned a 122-114 victory over the Toronto Raptors Saturday night at the BMO Harris Bradley Center.

The Bucks solidified their hold on the eighth and final playoff spot in the East, maintaining a six-game lead over Philadelphia and improving to a 7 1/2-game margin over the Raptors.

Monta Ellis had 23 points and five assists, J.J. Redick added 16 points and Larry Sanders had 13 points, 12 rebounds and five blocks as the Bucks (29-28) won their third straight. Alan Anderson led Toronto (23-37) with 21 points, including a baseline drive for a dunk with 1.6 seconds left to send the game to overtime. Milwaukee scored the first seven points of overtime, and led by at least four the rest of the way as the Raptors lost their fourth straight.

QUOTABLE: "That's how you grow as a team. It just shows our character and how we continue to play hard and come up with wins."

THE STAT: That the Bucks shot 50 percent (46-for-92) and had 32 assists on their 46 field goals was one thing, but what stands out more is that Milwaukee ran its offense so efficiently that Toronto was only able to score seven fast-break points in the 53 minutes.

TURNING POINT: Sanders, the third-year center who hardly made a peep in his first two seasons, grabbed an Ellis miss in traffic and slammed it down for the first points of overtime. Sixteen seconds later at the other end Sanders blocked Landry Fields' shot, and the Bucks were off and running.

QUOTABLE II: "I'm just trying to be consistent -- trying to stay in the game, keep growing, keep getting better, and it's working."

HOT: With Ilyasova going 12-for-21 and Sanders going 6-for-8, the Bucks' two big men combined to go 18-for-29 (62.1 percent).

NOT: DeMar DeRozan had 18 points for Toronto but went just 6-for-21 to get them.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Along with his 29 points -- three short of his career-high -- Ilyasova also added 11 rebounds.

GOOD MOVE: Sanders picked up two fouls in the first 7:04 of the first quarter and had to go to the bench. Foul trouble is the one thing that has kept Sanders off the floor, but he did not pick up another foul the rest of the night.

ROOKIE WATCH: Bucks forward John Henson went 4-for-5 and scored eight points in just 8:47 of playing time -- all in the first half.

NOTABLE: Raptors forward Rudy Gay tried in pre-game to get loose but couldn't overcome back spasms that bothered him Friday night against Indiana and did not play. Gay is averaging 20.5 points in the 13 games he's played for Toronto since being acquired on Jan. 30. ... The Bucks have won nine straight games against Toronto. ... Sanders extended his streak of games with at least one block to 39 straight. ... The Bucks had 32 assists and are 15-2 in games where they have at least 30 assists. ... Toronto point guard Kyle Lowry had a triple-double, getting exactly 10 points, assists and rebounds each. He made two 3-pointers in the overtime.
