Timberwolves-Trail Blazers Preview

With a little over six weeks remaining in the regular season, the slumping Portland Trail Blazers know they need to pick up the pace.

A visit from the last-place Minnesota Timberwolves could help them do just that.

Portland tries to continue its recent domination of Minnesota as these Northwest Division rivals conclude their season series Saturday night.

While the 10th-place Trail Blazers (26-31) are hoping to climb into the Western Conference playoff picture, a 1-8 funk has instead set them back. Portland sits two games behind the ninth-place Los Angeles Lakers and a handful in back of the eighth and final postseason spot.

"I think we still have got a chance," said Damian Lillard, who leads all rookies with 18.4 points, 6.4 assists and 2.2 3-pointers per game. "Until it says we can't catch any team for eighth, then that's when we'll be out. We can string wins together at any point. As long as there's a window open, we've got a chance."

After snapping a season-worst seven-game losing streak with Sunday's 92-86 win over Boston, Portland's struggles resumed Wednesday in a 111-109 loss to Denver. Lillard scored 26 points, LaMarcus Aldridge added 22 and J.J. Hickson posted 18 and 14 rebounds, but the Blazers were outscored 72-42 in the paint and allowed 26 points off 19 turnovers.

"It's tough to come up short at the end of a game that we really needed to win," Lillard said. "We know what time it is. ... Guys putting everything out there at this time of the season because we know we've got a chance, and when you come up short on your home floor when you play hard like that, this is the type of feeling you have."

Portland figures to be in higher spirits with Minnesota (20-35) coming to town. The Blazers have taken 13 of 14 meetings at home and 20 of 22 overall, including all three this season. Wesley Matthews has gone 14 for 21 from 3-point range and averaged 26.0 points - 10.9 more than his season mark - in the three games while Lillard's averaged 23.0.

Minnesota is coming off its fourth consecutive loss and 20th in 24 games, 116-94 at the Lakers on Thursday. Continuing to play without Kevin Love and just two days after losing Andrei Kirilenko to a calf injury, the Timberwolves saw Nikola Pekovic go down with an abdominal strain. Pekovic, averaging 15.9 points and 8.8 rebounds, is uncertain to suit up Saturday.

"It's been horrendous. I've never seen anything like this," coach Rick Adelman said. "And it's not just getting injuries, but when the guys do start trickling back, they haven't played together, so we've got no rhythm as a team.

"We're just trying to fit people in. It's been really frustrating, but I give our guys credit. They're still trying to fight through it. After a while, it gets really old, but the schedule doesn't stop. You've got to keep playing."

J.J. Barea scored 20 points off the bench Thursday and Ricky Rubio added 13, 13 assists and eight rebounds. Minnesota has dropped 15 of 17 on the road while surrendering an average of 104.4 points.

"Man, it's tough. I don't think anybody in here has ever lost like this before," said Derrick Williams, averaging 16.5 points and 9.0 boards over the last 10 games. "I mean, we've had only nine or 10 players all season, and it takes a toll on you every single night."

Lillard's 24 points lead Blazers past Timberwolves

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) The best way to win, Terry Stotts told his Portland Trail Blazers, was to not let their opponents hang around in games.

The Minnesota Timberwolves found out the hard way.

Damian Lillard scored 24 points, J.J. Hickson added 18 points and 16 rebounds and the Trail Blazers took an early lead and never looked back in a 109-94 win over the Timberwolves on Saturday night.

LaMarcus Aldridge had 17 points and eight rebounds for Portland, which had six players score in double-figures. The Blazers were up by 10 points in the first quarter and led by as many as 18, while the Timberwolves never challenged.

That's been a rarity for the Blazers, who have had problems sustaining leads this season.

"Even at shootaround, we were talking about how we can't play down to the level of this team even though they're hurt," Hickson said. "We just wanted to come out and play our game and we did that tonight."

Derrick Williams had 23 points and eight rebounds to lead the short-handed Wolves, who have dropped their last five games and 21 of 25. Luke Ridnour added 18 points and six assists, and former Blazer Dante Cunningham had 16 points and eight rebounds off the bench.

The Blazers entered the game having lost eight of their last nine to fall back in the playoff hunt. Portland is in 10th place in the Western Conference, behind the L.A. Lakers and Houston. The Blazers' only win since Feb. 4 was last Sunday over Boston.

"I really like the demeanor we came out with in this game," Stotts said. "We addressed that, and guys really took it to heart."

Injured Timberwolves guard Brandon Roy returned to the Rose Garden for the first time since coming out of retirement to join Minnesota last summer. Roy was a three-time All-Star and NBA rookie of the year in Portland before deteriorating knees forced him to quit after the 2010-11 season. He is still beloved in Portland, where he was the biggest star since Clyde Drexler.

Sitting on the bench in a dress shirt and tie, Roy received a standing ovation from the crowd when he was shown on the big screen during a second quarter timeout. Roy hasn't played since undergoing his seventh knee surgery on Nov. 19, "but I'm still excited to be here and see the fans," he said before the game.

Roy's injury is far from Minnesota's only problem. The Wolves were missing three starters - leading scorer and rebounder Kevin Love (broken hand), forward Andrei Kirilenko (calf) and center Nikola Pekovic (abdominal strain).

"It's hard when you're missing players, especially scorers like Kevin, Pek and Kirilenko," said Minnesota guard Ricky Rubio, who had 12 points and nine assists. "It's something we have to face every night - play the players we have and fight until the end."

The Wolves shot just 39 percent from the field and made just one of 12 3-point attempts.

NOTES: Portland has dominated the series, having taken 14 of the last 15 meetings between the two teams at the Rose Garden and 21 of 23 in the series overall. ... Reserve guard Eric Maynor, picked up recently from Oklahoma City, had a career-high 12 assists for Portland. ... Roy said his knee troubles haven't caused him to rethink his return. "I am still young and if I was to stop playing basketball, I don't know what I would do," he said. Nonetheless, he said he is at peace. "If I never play another game, I am completely satisfied with my career."

THE FACTS: Damian Lillard scored 24 points as the Portland Trail Blazers rolled past the injury-ravaged Minnesota Timberwolves 109-94 Saturday night for only their second win in 10 games.

J.J. Hickson collected 18 points and 16 rebounds as the Trail Blazers (27-31) completed a four-game season series sweep. Derrick Williams collected 23 points and eight rebounds for Minnesota (20-36), which has lost five in a row and 10 of its last 12 outings.

The Blazers got major contributions off the bench from rookies Meyers Leonard (12 points, eight rebounds) and Victor Claver (10 points), and from Eric Maynor (seven points and a career-high 12 assists).

QUOTABLE: "Tonight it started from [the first] jump ball. We didn't let up, except for a couple of possessions in the fourth quarter. Coach [Terry Stotts] called timeout, we regrouped and finished the job."

THE STAT: Portland shot much better than Minnesota -- .487 to .391 from the field, including 7-for-20 from 3-point range to the Timberwolves' 1-for-12.

TURNING POINT: With Portland ahead 53-46 early in the third quarter, LaMarcus Aldridge keyed a 11-2 surge that produced a 64-48 lead. Minnesota never got the lead into single digits the rest of the way.

QUOTABLE II: "We're just so thin because of all the injuries. You go at it with the right attitude and keep busting your tail, eventually it's going to pay off. [The Timberwolves] competed the whole game, but [the Blazers] were just bigger and stronger. We need to get people back; we need some support."

GOOD MOVE: Portland's Stotts used point guards Lillard and Maynor often together in the backcourt. It worked well against the Timberwolves, who have four true point guards who are consistently paired together.

BAD MOVE: Leonard was 6-for-7 from the field. His only miss came when he tried to dunk and missed, then hung on the rim as the ball bounced high in the air and through the hoop. The score was negated due to basket interference.

NOTABLE: The Timberwolves were without their entire starting front line ? Nikola Pekovic, Kevin Love and Andrei Kirilenko ? due to injuries. ...Hickson notched his 32nd double-double of the season. ... Maynor's 12 assists are second-most by an NBA reserve this season, behind only San Antonio's Manu Ginobili (15). Maynor also tied Lillard and Nicolas Batum for a Portland game high this season. ... Minnesota's Ricky Rubio flirted with his first career triple-double, finishing with 12 points, nine rebounds and nine assists. ... Minnesota's Brandon Roy received a rousing standing ovation from the Rose Garden crowd during the first timeout. Roy, who spent his first five NBA seasons in Portland, underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right knee Nov. 19 and has missed the last 50 games. He said before the game he hopes to return to practice soon and "be ready to play again in a week or two." ... The Blazers held a large advantage in rebounds (55-47), points in the paint (56-40) and assists (32-19).

QUOTABLE III: "It's fun to have somebody else who sees everything that's going on on the floor. Eric [Maynor] sees what I see. He's thinking what point guards think when they're bringing it up the floor. He's looking for guys in their spots. He probably should have had 15, 16 assists. He did a really good job of making plays for us."
