Wizards-Raptors Preview

Both the Toronto Raptors and Washington Wizards remain in the bottom half of the Eastern Conference standings, but neither team is playing like it lately.

Continuing to surge after the acquisition of Rudy Gay, Toronto will go for its seventh win in eight games Monday night when it hosts Washington, which has won six of eight on the strength of an improving offense. The Wizards are looking to snap a five-game losing streak in Toronto and avenge Tuesday's 96-88 home loss to the Raptors.

The Raptors (23-33) are still four games out of the East's eighth spot, but they're 7-3 since Gay arrived from Memphis. Not only has Gay elevated Toronto's play, but he's been more productive with his new team, averaging 21.4 points after putting up 17.2 through 42 games for the Grizzlies.

He scored a season-high 32 in a 100-98 win over New York on Friday, taking over in the third quarter with 17 points on 7-of-9 shooting.

"You can give him the ball, he's a guy who can get that big bucket for you, he's a guy who can shoot over the defense and make plays, he has the ability to make those shots," point guard Kyle Lowry told the Raptors' official website. "He doesn't worry about making or taking those shots, he thinks he's going to make them all."

The Wizards (17-37) remain the NBA's worst road team with a 4-22 mark, but they've won two in a row and 13 of 22 overall. They're 11-4 when facing opponents that are at or above .500 in that stretch, though they're 2-5 against foes with losing records.

Washington still ranks last in the league with 92.0 ppg, but the offense has made strides recently, averaging 99.0 points over the last eight contests. The Wizards used a 54-34 edge on points in the paint to overcome 19 3-pointers from Houston in a 105-103 home win Saturday.

Emeka Okafor had 17 points and 11 rebounds for his third double-double in five games. He's averaging 15.6 points on 57.1 percent shooting along with 10.4 rebounds over that span.

"I thought Emeka played outstanding for us, again," coach Randy Wittman said. "He was doing the job down there when he was getting the ball."

While Gay has been getting the job done and quickly becoming popular with fans in Toronto, support for Andrea Bargnani is waning. Bargnani, who remains with the team despite rumors he could be traded before last week's deadline, was booed by the home crowd Friday.

Bargnani has gone scoreless over 34 minutes in his last two games and is averaging 6.0 points in seven contests since returning from an elbow injury that sidelined him for nearly two months.

"I don't think it's fair just because a guy's been hurt, he's been out," coach Dwane Casey said. "Let's pull for him. If you're a fan, let's be fans for our guys, not for the opposing team's guys."

Bargnani had nine points on 4-of-7 shooting last week in Washington while Gay and DeMar DeRozan each scored 24. Bradley Beal finished with 25 points for the Wizards but John Wall struggled, going 1 of 12 from the field and matching a season high with seven turnovers.

Wizards beat Raptors 90-84 for 3rd straight win

TORONTO (AP) Bradley Beal is making a strong case to earn top rookie honors in the Eastern Conference for the third straight month.

Beal scored 20 points, Nene had 11 points and nine rebounds, and the Washington Wizards beat the Toronto Raptors 90-84 on Monday night for their third straight victory.

The third overall pick in last June's draft, and the East rookie of the month in December and January, Beal scored 20 or more for the 11th time.

"I feel a lot more comfortable and I have a lot more confidence as well," Beal said. "It's a learning process for me and it's been like that the whole year. Now the game is slowing down for me, so I'm making easier reads. I'm starting to learn how teams are playing me and I'm just playing off of that."

A.J. Price and Martell Webster each added 12 points for the Wizards, who won for just the fifth time in 27 road games this season. Washington's road record is the worst in the NBA.

Beal missed five games between Jan. 30 and Feb. 6 with a sore right wrist but has topped 20 points in four of seven games since returning.

"He's been playing great basketball over the last two weeks," Webster said. "The kid is balling. He has a great rhythm, let's hope he keeps riding it."

John Wall had 10 points and seven assists, and Emeka Okafor had eight points and 13 rebounds as the Wizards won for the 14th time in 23 games.

Okafor said Beal has made a vital contribution to Washington's offense during its recent surge.

"He's been that spark," Okafor said. "When things are a little bit slow or there's a lull, he gets it picked up."

DeMar DeRozan scored 25 points and Kyle Lowry had 18 for the Raptors, who had won six of their previous seven.

Raptors coach Dwane Casey called the loss "a stinker."

"They whipped us, they outworked us," Casey said. "Washington is an athletic team and they are playing hard. That should have gotten our attention."

It was a rough night for Toronto's Rudy Gay, who missed his first six field goal attempts before scoring on a driving dunk one minute into the fourth quarter. Gay shot 1 for 11 and finished with seven points, one more than his season low, set Dec 22 at Houston when he played for Memphis.

"To crowd him was the most important thing tonight," Webster said. "Our minds were set on making every possession for him tough."

A three-point play by DeRozan cut Toronto's deficit to 79-72 with 3:38 left. Thirty seconds later, Gay was fouled with a chance to cut it to five but he missed the second free throw.

Nene answered with a dunk and, after a basket by Lowry, Trevor Ariza made a layup to make it 83-75 with 2:13 remaining.

Nine of Nene's 11 points came in the final quarter.

"I thought he was huge for us in the fourth, scoring some big baskets and anchoring our defense," Wizards coach Randy Wittman said.

DeRozan made a pair of free throws with 1:57 left, but could only make one of two when he went back to the line with 1:04 remaining, leaving Toronto down 83-78.

Wall nearly lost the ball at midcourt on the next possession but kept the play alive by calling timeout. After the stoppage he streaked in to score a layup, giving the Wizards an 85-78 edge with 45 seconds left.

Back-to-back 3 pointers by Lowry cut it to 89-84 with 7 seconds to go, but Garrett Temple sealed it by making one of two at the line.

Okafor led all scorers with six points in the first, including a fast-break slam dunk in the final second that gave the Wizards a 17-16 lead.

Beal scored seven points in the second and Price had five to give the Wizards a 40-32 lead at the half.

Toronto's 32 points at the break matched its season low. The Raptors also had 32 first-half points in an 88-82 loss to Memphis on Feb. 20.

Lowry's 3-pointer with 4:14 left in the third tied it at 49-all, but Washington scored the next seven points and closed the quarter on a 14-5 run. Beal scored nine in the third as the Wizards took a 63-54 lead into the fourth

THE FACTS: The Washington Wizards (18-37) earned their seventh win in nine games, defeating the Toronto Raptors (23-34) 90-84, in a gritty contest at Air Canada Centre Monday night. Despite turning over the ball 20 times, the Wizards looked very much in control, behind rookie Bradley Beal's 20 points and A.J. Price's 12 off the bench. Nene scored 11 points and nine rebounds, while John Wall added 10 points and seven assists, including the go ahead basket to put the game away.

After futile shooting, where neither team shot above 36 percent from the field, the Wizards took a 40-32 lead into halftime The Raptors finally figured out a way to get the ball in the basket in the third quarter, going on an 11-2 run with 4:16 left, tying the game at 49-49. But Beal broke the tie with a 3-pointer and keyed a 15-5 Wizards run to end the quarter, 63-43 scoring seven points of his own during that stretch.

The fourth quarter saw the Wizards extend to their longest lead of the game at 12, with Nene scoring nine of his 11 points in the quarter. The Raptors could only claw as close as five points with 1:03 left at 83-78. However, Wall's driving lay-up at 45.9 seconds sealed the game and led to a series of free throws before the final buzzer.

Despite a poor shooting and an off-game from their leading scorer Rudy Gay, DeMar DeRozan scored a game-high 24 points, while Kyle Lowry added 18. Raptors scoring leader Gay was held to 1-for-11 shooting from the field and added six rebounds and five turnovers as a team, the Raptors shot only 36.7 percent from the floor.

QUOTABLE: "The one constant all year for us has been Bradley Beal. He had a first tough couple of weeks, but that's expected. But he's been so consistent for us over the past two months on bringing it every night on both ends of the floor."

THE STAT: It's incredible to think that a team could turn over the ball 20 times, leading to 25 points for their opponent and win, but that's exactly what the Wizards did.

TURNING POINT: The Wizards never trailed in the second half, however the Raptors continued to hang around. Not until Wall's drive down the lane and easy finish with 45.9 seconds left put the Wizards up 85-78 and sealed the win.

QUOTABLE II: "It was a stinker. They whipped us. They outworked us. We tried to turn it on, but they got us. They kicked our butt in the paint. They forced us into 12 turnovers in the first half. That was the ball game."

HOT: Price came off the bench for Washington providing key scoring, shooting 5-for-7 from the field, including 2-for-2 from the 3-point line.

NOT: Gay came off a season-high 32-point game against the Knicks and didn't make his first field goal until the fourth quarter. He shot 1-for-11 from the field and finished with six points, six rebounds, four assists and five turnovers. The team wins with him and loses with him.

NOTABLE: Washington is 13-9 with Wall in the line up, this was their fifth road win of the season, (5-22). Beal has now scored 20+ in eleven games this season. Actress Rachel McAdams was in attendance. Sebastian Telfair, who was recently traded to Toronto for Hamed Hadaddi, was active, but did not play. Mickael Pietrus was inactive for the Raptors.
