Lakers-Nuggets Preview

After another big game from Kobe Bryant helped them continue their surge, the Los Angeles Lakers prepare for one of their toughest road tests since it began.

The Denver Nuggets, however, could be without their leading scorer on Monday night when they try to slow down the streaking Lakers and win their ninth straight home game.

Following a stretch of 10 losses in 12 games to open 2013, the Lakers (28-29) fell to a season-worst eight games under .500 on Jan. 23.

Los Angeles, though, has stormed back into the Western Conference playoff picture with 11 wins in 15 games, the latest a 103-99 victory at Dallas on Sunday. The win moved the Lakers within 2 1/2 games of idle Houston for the eighth spot in the West.

Bryant enters this contest in a serious groove with 78 points on 28-of-44 (63.6 percent) shooting in his last two games. He had 38 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists against the Mavericks while passing the 31,000-point mark for his career.

"He's been the best player in my decade," said Dallas forward Dirk Nowitzki. "I've been in the NBA a long time and he's the one player I love to watch."

Bryant finished with 40 points in Denver on Dec. 26, but the Nuggets scored 69 in the second half en route to a 126-114 victory that began a stretch of eight straight road losses for Los Angeles.

This time, the Lakers hope to prove they're a different team and capture their sixth win in eight road games following the season-worst skid. That doesn't figure to be an easy task against a Denver team that has won 23 of 26 at the Pepsi Center, including eight straight by an average of 12.7 points.

The Nuggets (35-22) had lost four of five - with each loss coming on the road - before bouncing back with a 113-99 victory at league-worst Charlotte on Saturday.

Now they're focused on catching Memphis for the No. 4 seed and earning home-court advantage for the first round of the playoffs.

"If we get to 53 or 54 (wins) I think that we'll get that fourth seed in the playoffs," guard Ty Lawson said. "But we know it's going to be a grind for the next couple weeks, couple months."

Lawson, who had a team-high 20 points against the Bobcats, has averaged 26.2 while shooting 54.5 percent from the field in his last six games. He had 21 points and 10 assists to lead Denver to a 112-105 win in Los Angeles on Jan. 6.

Danilo Gallinari, however, finished with just six points for the second consecutive game on Saturday while playing through a thigh bruise. The team's leading scorer (16.9 ppg) is considered questionable for Monday.

Gallinari has scored at least 19 in each of the three meetings with Los Angeles this season.

The Nuggets rank near the top of the league in home scoring (108.7), and have averaged 113.7 against the Lakers while allowing that same amount.

Reserve Antawn Jamison led Los Angeles with a season-high 33 points and 12 rebounds in a 122-103 home win over the Nuggets on Nov. 30.

Dwight Howard has totaled 42 points and 46 rebounds in the two home meetings, but finished with just 12 and seven, respectively, in the last meeting in Denver.

The Nuggets have won seven of 10 at home against the Lakers, including the first round of the 2012 playoffs.

Chandler leads Nuggets past Lakers, 119-108

DENVER (AP) It's a good thing Danilo Gallinari was a late scratch for the Denver Nuggets. With a bruised left thigh, he couldn't have kept up with his hustling teammates as they sped past the aged and aching Los Angeles Lakers.

Wilson Chandler scored 23 points in place of Gallinari, and Ty Lawson added 22 in the Nuggets' 119-108 win Monday night in which Denver outscored the Lakers 33-3 on the fast break and 78-50 in the paint.

"The fast-break points, that's a killer," Kobe Bryant said. "That team is like a track team over there."

And the Lakers were like a bunch of shuffle-boarders, trailing on the scoreboard and the hardwood all night long as they trudged through the second game of a difficult back-to-back.

"First, we know that they played last night," Lawson said. "Coming into the altitude, also they're a little slow getting back. So, once they miss a shot, it seemed like a jailbreak. Everybody was trying to run downcourt and get the layup."

Or the arena-shaking slam dunk.

Or the rim-rattling alley-oop jam.

Corey Brewer also got extended minutes with Gallinari out and he scored 16, many in transition. Even seldom-used reserves Anthony Randolph and Jordan Hamilton joined in the fast-break fun.

"Our running game was sensational," Nuggets coach George Karl said. "And we put enough defense in the game."

Gallinari, the Nuggets' leading scorer, wasn't needed as the Nuggets won their ninth straight game at home, snapped the Lakers' three-game winning streak and took the season series from their long-time nemesis 3-1.

Coming off a down-to-the-wire win at Dallas the day before, the Lakers wanted to slow down the Nuggets but just couldn't keep up with their younger, more athletic and, yes, better-rested opponents.

"They just ran out of the starter's blocks and beat us down the floor," Lakers coach Mike D'Antoni said. "... We couldn't catch them. We just couldn't catch them. For whatever reason, they just took off. Even on just a missed shot, we couldn't get back quick enough."'

Bryant led the Lakers with 29 points, and his fadeaway jumper with five minutes left cut Denver's lead to 106-99, but the Lakers got no closer.

The Nuggets scored 22 points off the Lakers' 15 turnovers.

"It's tough to neutralize speed, especially when they're very good at what they do," Bryant said. "Yeah, their speed. Their speed got us. They got out on transition, got easy buckets. Kept the pressure on us. We had to labor for opportunities, think we might have had two fast-break points. Contrast that with 33. It's crazy."

Anything and everything the Lakers tried to do to flip the size-speed disadvantage only backfired on them.

"You have to almost over-exaggerate getting back on defense," Bryant said. "Literally, nobody can go to the offensive boards."

Sure enough, the Lakers had zero rebounds off the offensive glass in the first half and just eight all night.

"I think it was their speed," Bryant said. "Their speed was something that was tough for us to adjust to all night long. They continually pushed the ball down our throats. Shots go up and those guys are already leaking out, to go along with the speed. They got a lot of easy buckets because of it."

Bryant needed 23 shots to score his 29 points and he often found those shots getting swatted away by JaVale McGee, including one that led to a basket by Lawson as the Nuggets took a 67-54 halftime lead. A flustered Bryant picked up a technical foul on his way to the locker room.

Bryant said his NBA-leading 14th technical of the season was a misunderstanding and he's confident the league will rescind it. A one-game suspension is in order when a player reaches 16 technical fouls.

"I'm not concerned," Bryant said.

Andre Iguodala (14 points, 12 assists) and Kenneth Faried (12 points, 10 rebounds) posted double-doubles for Denver.

Dwight Howard added 15 points and 14 boards for L.A. but missed 11 of his last 12 free throws after sinking his first two.

"That was the highlight," D'Antoni cracked. "It happens. I'm not going to dwell on it much, just because nobody steps up there and wants to miss it. We just need to clean up the other stuff.

"I was more disappointed in the turnovers in the first quarter and not having that little extra burst to try to get back. We couldn't even get three guys back. It was like 5-on-2. They had all five guys down and we had one back or two back. To me, we just weren't quite ready for their speed."

Notes: The Nuggets are 24-3 at the Pepsi Center, including a 126-114 win over the Lakers on Dec. 26. ... The Lakers had won 11 of 14. ... THE FACTS: Wilson Chandler scored 23 points in a rare start, Ty Lawson chipped in with 22 and nine assists and the Denver Nuggets used a fast-paced style to run past the Los Angeles Lakers 119-108 on Monday night.

Kobe Bryant scored 29 points and had nine assists and Dwight Howard had 15 points and 14 rebounds for the Lakers, who had their three-game winning streak snapped.

The Nuggets (36-22) took the lead for good in the first quarter and led 67-54 at half thanks to an uptempo style against L.A. (28-30). They outscored the Lakers 22-3 in fast-break points at intermission and 33-3 for the game.

Kenneth Faried added 12 points and 10 rebounds for his 24th double-double of the season for Denver.

THE STAT: The Lakers shot 60 percent in the first half, and 55 percent for the game, but still lost by double digits. One reason was Denver's 44-36 edge in rebounding and a 78-50 advantage in points in the paint.

TURNING POINT: After the Lakers trimmed an 18-point deficit to seven on two baskets by Bryant, the Nuggets put it away. Chandler hit a jumper and a 3-pointer to spark Denver's 13-4 run that iced the game.

QUOTABLE II: "Once they missed a shot it was like a jailbreak. Everybody was trying to get down the court and get a layup."

HOT: Denver's defense. Although the Lakers scored 108 points and shot better than 50 percent, the Nuggets were active on defense -- which led to 33 fast-break points. The defense tightened when needed, especially after the Lakers cut it to 106-99 with 5:17 left.

NOT: Howard has never been known for his free-throw shooting, but Monday he was downright foul. He made his first two from the line and then went 1-for-12 the rest of the game. Overall, the Lakers shot 14-for-31 from the line..

QUOTABLE IV: "We missed 17 free throws and you get beat by 11, you can do the math. And it doesn't add up. You can't go 14-for-31 from the line and turn it over on the road and expect to win."

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Lawson has been dominating in February. He had his seventh straight game of 20 or more points and he is averaging 25.6 points and 8.3 assists in that span.

GOOD MOVE: Putting Chandler in the starting lineup. He missed most of the first half of the season as he recovered from offseason hip surgery but he has started to find his rhythm. He hit 10 of his 18 shots and was 3-for-5 from 3-point range. He also plays versatile defense, guarding everywhere from the point to power forward.

BAD MOVE: Bryant picked up a technical at the end of the first half. It was his league-leading 14th of the season. Two more and he will be suspended for a game.

NOTABLE: Nuggets leading scorer Danilo Gallinari did not play due to a bruised left thigh suffered Friday at Washington. ... Denver's 67 points in the first half was two less than the most given up by the Lakers in a half this season. Denver scored 69 in the second half against them on Dec. 26. ... Bryant has scored 29 or more points 450 times in his career. ... Denver is now 24-3 at home, tied with Miami for the second-best mark in the NBA.
