The New York Knicks need to do something to help build back their shrinking Atlantic Division lead.

Perhaps a home game against the slumping Philadelphia 76ers will help.

These divisional rivals will each try to end four-game losing streaks on Sunday night when they conclude their season series at Madison Square Garden.

After losing 97-80 at Philadelphia (22-31) on Jan. 26, the Knicks (32-20) went on a 6-1 run to build a four-game divisional lead over Brooklyn. That edge is now one game - and Boston is just 4 1/2 back - as New York has dropped five of six. The team has also fallen one game behind Central Division-leading Indiana, which routed the Knicks 125-91 on Wednesday, for second place in the Eastern Conference.

"When you lose games like this it's easy to start thinking too much, overthinking what you should do, what you shouldn't do, rather than just going out there and playing basketball," said Carmelo Anthony, who scored 32 points, but shot 1-of-8 from 3-point range, in Friday's 100-98 loss at Toronto. "I think that's where we're at."

The Knicks aren't getting the job done on either end of the floor during their longest skid of the season, averaging 91.3 points and giving up 104.8 per contest.

The addition of veteran Kenyon Martin, who signed a 10-day contract on Saturday, could help New York on the defensive side as the team is still without injured big men Marcus Camby (left plantar fascia) and Rasheed Wallace (sore left foot).

New York will try to prevent its first five-game skid since a six-game stretch from March 4-12.

"We've got to go home and try to get off this slide," said coach Mike Woodson, whose team will try to avoid a season-worst third straight home loss.

Philadelphia arrives at MSG following Saturday's 114-90 home loss to East-leading Miami.

The 76ers, 3 1/2 behind eighth-place Milwaukee in the East, are winless since a 5-2 run that began Jan. 26.

"In the first half, we did a lot of things well (and trailed by nine)," said All-Star guard Jrue Holiday, who finished with 21 points on Saturday after averaging 14.0 in the previous three. "We have to sustain that for 48 minutes."

Hitting the road might not help Philadelphia get back into the win column. The team has dropped 15 of 17 as the visitor and is on the verge of its first eight-game skid away from home since Nov. 10-Dec. 3, 2010.

The 76ers have lost four of six at New York after a 100-84 defeat in their lone visit this season on Nov. 4. The Knicks won 110-88 the following night in Philadelphia.

Holiday had career highs with 16 field goals and 35 points on Jan. 26 to raise his season average in this series to 26.3. He's also handed out 21 assists.

Anthony, second in the league with 28.4 points per game, leads the Knicks in points (73) in those three contests, and is third in rebounds (21), trailing Tyson Chandler (23) and J.R. Smith (22).

Knicks beat 76ers 99-93 to end 4-game skid

NEW YORK (AP) Even when he wasn't hitting his shots, Carmelo Anthony delivered a shot.

Tired of losing and determined to stop it, the New York Knicks toughened up and fought their way out of their worst slump of the season.

Anthony scored 29 points, Amare Stoudemire had a season-high 22, and the Knicks snapped their four-game losing streak by beating the Philadelphia 76ers 99-93 on Sunday night.

"Losing games, games we think we're supposed to win, you come into a game like this, we want to win," Anthony said. "Definitely want to be a very high-intensity game, a very high-energetic game back here on our home court and we didn't want to lose this game."

Anthony was only 6 of 18 from the field, but made 16 of 18 free throws and also was called for a flagrant foul for the fired-up Knicks, who have fallen behind Indiana into third place in the Eastern Conference and whose Atlantic Division lead over the Brooklyn Nets is down to two games.

They were sharp enough to build a couple of big leads and turn away the runs Philadelphia made, handing the 76ers their eighth straight road loss.

"After losing four straight, it's never a good feeling losing games, so tonight we came out with the intensity from the start that we needed," said Stoudemire, who was 9 of 10 from the field.

All-Star Jrue Holiday had 30 points, five rebounds and five assists for the 76ers, who have lost five straight overall. Evan Turner had 21 points and Thaddeus Young added 11 points and 10 rebounds after missing six games with a strained left hamstring.

Knicks coach Mike Woodson declined to make a lineup change, and it was Stoudemire and the reserves who helped New York take control early in the second quarter, and the starters who reopened a big lead to begin the third.

Philadelphia coach Doug Collins said the difference was the Knicks' fast starts to start the second and third quarters.

"Their bench came in and I told our guys it really hurt us. They went up 13-0, had a 13-0 run with Carmelo on the bench," Collins said. "Can't let that happen."

Raymond Felton finished with 14 points despite bruising his right heel and J.R. Smith also had 14 for the Knicks.

"This was a must-win because we felt things have just not been going our way for whatever reason," Knicks center Tyson Chandler said. "We had to get out of this slump."

Collins said he expected the Knicks to be "testy" and "edgy" and that was the case with about 7 1/2 minutes left in the third quarter and the Knicks leading by 14. Anthony appeared to hit Spencer Hawes behind the head going for a rebound, and when they began to exchange words, Chandler rushed in and shoved Hawes back. Anthony ended up being assessed a flagrant foul, and Chandler and Hawes were whistled for technicals.

Anthony said he wasn't angry and didn't mean to hit Hawes in the head, and was simply reacting after he took an elbow.

"It's part of basketball, part of the game. It gets like that sometimes," Hawes said. "I think it was a physical game. I think they were letting some stuff go early, it usually precludes incidents like that."

The 76ers rallied a bit afterward, getting within 76-67 at the end of three, but then Stoudemire scored the first four of the final quarter and Philadelphia didn't really get close again until the final minutes.

The 76ers have lost 17 of their last 20 road games and haven't won away from home since beating the Lakers on New Year's Day. The eight-game skid is their longest since also dropping eight in a row from Nov. 10 to Dec. 3, 2010.

The Knicks led 24-22 after one, then opened the second with a 17-2 run to build a 41-24 lead on Pablo Prigioni's free throws with 7:15 remaining in the quarter. New York was ahead 52-40 at halftime behind 18 points from Anthony and 11 more from Stoudemire on 5-of-6 shooting.

NOTES: Kenyon Martin didn't play in his first game since signing a 10-day contract Saturday. Though he hasn't played since finishing last season with the Los Angeles Clippers, Martin said he has kept himself in good shape and would find ways to produce until he got back into good basketball condition. "Sometimes it's mind over matter, will over situation," he said. Martin has played with a number of Knicks on other teams and his locker is next to Jason Kidd, his teammate on two NBA Finals teams in New Jersey in 2002-03. A former No. 1 pick in the draft, Martin said it was "humbling" to now be on a 10-day contract, adding he was "mad, sad, upset, confused," when he couldn't get a job after last season. But he downplayed his age on the oldest team in NBA history, saying "35, I'm young around here." The Knicks have five older players. ... The Sixers, who lost to Miami on Saturday, fell to 2-11 on the second night of back-to-back games.

THE FACTS: Carmelo Anthony scored a team-high 29 points, Amar'e Stoudemire added a season-high 22 and the New York Knicks snapped a season-high four-game losing streak by defeating the Philadelphia 76ers, 99-93, at Madison Square Garden on Sunday evening.

Anthony and Stoudemire led four Knicks in double figures as J.R. Smith and Raymond Felton each finished with 14 points. Anthony added seven rebounds, while Smith and Stoudemire each finished with five.

For the Sixers, who are now 1-6 in their last seven games, All-Star point guard Jrue Holiday scored a game-high 30 points to go along with five rebounds and five assists.

The Knicks now lead the Atlantic Division by two games thanks to the win combined with the Brooklyn Nets' loss to the Memphis Grizzlies on Sunday, 76-72.

QUOTABLE: "We got tired of losing, we just had to find a way to come out here and win. I think sometimes when you lose games, consecutive games, you start pressing, you start thinking about too much and tonight we came out and just played."

THE STAT: Led by Stoudemire's 22 points and 9-for-10 shooting from the field, the Knicks' bench outscored the Sixers' bench, 44-21, as the team moved to 27-16 on the year when the bench outscores their opponent.

TURNING POINT: An ugly, poor-shooting first quarter from both sides gave way to the Knicks ripping off a 17-2 run over first 4:45 of the second quarter to take a 41-24 lead. Stoudemire had six points during the run, including an 18-foot jumper from straightaway that made the score 35-24 with 9:40 to play in the quarter. Meanwhile, the Sixers shot 1-for-8 during the run. After shooting just 8-for-24 in the first quarter, the Knicks led at halftime, 52-40, after shooting 9-for-15 in the second.

HOT: Stoudemire has settled in nicely to his role off the bench since making his season debut on New Year's Day following preseason knee surgery. Sunday marked arguably his biggest contribution yet as his 22 points marked a season-high. It was also his biggest output since scoring 20 points against the Detroit Pistons and his fourth game of at least 20 in his 23 games this season. He entered the night averaging 10.2 points over his last five games.

NOT: At the age of 39, past the halfway point of his 18th season, Jason Kidd continues to struggle. The future Hall of Fame point guard scored just three points and shot 1-for-7 from the field to go along with nine rebounds. Coming into the night, Kidd was averaging just 3.2 points in 29 minutes over his last five games, while shooting 26.3 percent from the field at 25 percent from 3-point range.

NOTABLE: With 7:28 to play in the third quarter, tempers flared when Anthony was called for a personal foul following a hard box out with Spencer Hawes. Tyson Chandler took exception to the physicality of the play, shoving Hawes before players and officials got between the two. Double technical fouls were called on Chandler and Hawes, while Anthony's personal foul was upgraded to a Flagrant 1 after the officials took a look at the replay and saw him elbow Hawes in the head. Chandler now has 10 technical fouls on the season, which puts him in a tie for fifth-most in the NBA. At 16 technical fouls, the NBA hands out a one-game suspension.

QUOTABLE II: I don't want to see guys get suspended or fined for throwing punches or anything of that nature. When you lose four in a row, and we haven't done that very often, you are on edge a little bit. It is my job as the coach to relax and let their play dictate what happens on the floor."

NOTABLE II: After signing a 10-day contract on Saturday, 12-year NBA veteran Kenyon Martin did not see the floor for the Knicks. Martin, who last played in the NBA with the Los Angeles Clippers last season, practiced on Saturday afternoon, but Woodson was non-committal during his pregame media availability as to whether or not Martin would play. He was signed as an insurance policy for aging and injured forwards Marcus Camby and Rasheed Wallace.
