Lakers-Mavericks Preview

Kobe Bryant is pushing Los Angeles to strive for a lofty goal, but the Lakers also have a more modest one of getting to the .500 mark.

They can move a step closer Sunday by continuing their recent success over the surging Dallas Mavericks, whose owner Mark Cuban might have added a little spice to the rivalry.

While giving a eulogy for late owner Jerry Buss on Thursday, Bryant challenged his teammates to honor his memory by continuing to improve, saying the Lakers were "playing for something bigger than ourselves, bigger than a single season."

Los Angeles (27-29) is below .500 this late in the season for the first time since 1993-94, one of five times the franchise didn't reach the playoffs since its founding in Minneapolis in 1948-49. The Lakers are just outside of position for another postseason berth in the Western Conference but have helped their chances by winning 10 of 14.

Bryant, who recently guaranteed that his team would make the playoffs, scored 11 of his 40 points in the final 5 1/2 minutes Friday to help the Lakers pull away in a 111-107 victory over visiting Portland.

"Kobe said what he had to say. But as a team, we understand how important the second half of the season is for us and what we want to accomplish," said center Dwight Howard, who had 19 points and 16 rebounds. "We've had a lot of ups and downs this year, and we want to do whatever we can to get this right.

"Kobe and myself understand that. It starts with me and him, as far as being on the same page. And on defense, it starts with me."

The Lakers will try to keep rolling by earning their eighth win in the last nine regular-season matchups with the Mavericks (25-29). Los Angeles cruised to its fourth straight win in Dallas on Nov. 24, as Antawn Jamison had 19 points and a season-high 15 rebounds in a 115-89 rout.

Dallas, one spot behind Los Angeles in the West, defeated New Orleans 104-100 on Friday for its fifth win in six games. Vince Carter made a go-ahead 3-pointer with 6.5 seconds left and finished with 22 points while Dirk Nowitzki had a team-best 25, one shy of matching his best performance since returning from knee surgery.

"We're playing for a lot of marbles, of course, just trying to get ourselves back into the (playoff) race," Carter said. "It was a must-win game just like every game we're going to play from here on out. We're trying to approach every game with a playoff mentality."

Having a playoff mentality might not be difficult with the Lakers visiting, and Cuban could have helped stoke the intensity by suggesting recently on a Dallas radio show that Los Angeles should use the amnesty clause on Bryant's contract, which has one year and $30.5 million remaining.

"We're aware of Mark Cuban's comments and fell they are inappropriate," team spokesman John Black said in a statement.

Having Nowitzki available might help the Mavericks beat the Lakers for only the second time since sweeping them out of the 2011 playoffs en route to their only NBA title. He's averaging 24.9 points in his last 10 games against Los Angeles, including the postseason.

Bryant is shooting 65.1 percent (28 of 43) in his last three games against the Mavericks, and Pau Gasol is averaging 21.3 points while shooting 68.3 percent (28 of 41) in his past three visits to Dallas.

Howard had his streak of eight consecutive double-doubles against the Mavericks snapped in November and will next try to prevent Dallas from matching its season-high four-game win streak from Jan. 10-16.

Bryant outscores Nowitzki as Lakers top Mavs

DALLAS (AP) Kobe Bryant was just a little better than Dirk Nowitzki in a spirited game befitting Western Conference leaders - not teams battling for ninth place.

Bryant had 38 points to win a scoring duel with Nowitzki, and Steve Nash helped beat his former team by getting 20 points for the first time with the Los Angeles Lakers in a 103-99 victory against the Dallas Mavericks on Sunday.

Nowitzki finished with a season-high 30 in a game that had a playoff feel from the start, even though both teams still have plenty of ground to make up to even qualify for the postseason. They trail eighth-place Houston by several games, but they are the franchises that have the last three NBA titles won by teams from the West.

Bryant and Nowitzki had 16 points apiece in the first half and were still even at 24 after the third quarter before Bryant scored 14 in the fourth, including seven in the last 3 minutes. They were a combined 8 of 9 from 3-point range and hit 24 shots and 12 free throws between them.

"It's fun," said Bryant, who also had 12 rebounds and seven assists. "He's one of my all-time favorites. He's a throwback type of player. He doesn't mind the physicality. He made some incredible plays down the stretch."

Bryant, who went past the 31,000-point mark, was playing in Mark Cuban's building two days after the outspoken Dallas owner suggested in a radio interview that the Lakers might have to consider dumping the five-time NBA champion through the amnesty clause.

The Lakers responded by calling the comment inappropriate, and Cuban defended himself before the game.

"Amnesty THAT," Bryant tweeted after the game.

"I'm sure if he wants to amnesty Dirk, that's something we'll be willing to entertain," Bryant told reporters.

The Mavericks were so frustrated trying to guard Bryant, O.J. Mayo got called for a foul and a technical when he jumped around wildly after the whistle blew on a drive to the basket by Bryant. Nash made the technical shot, and Bryant hit his pair of free throws for a 94-90 lead.

"He's been the best player in my decade," said Nowitzki, who also had his season high with 13 rebounds after missing the first 27 games following knee surgery. "I've been in the NBA a long time and he's the one player I love to watch. It was a big game on the national TV stage. It was a fun one. We just came up a little bit short."

Nowitzki was called for a technical earlier in the fourth quarter after a display similar to Mayo's when he missed a shot during a physical sequence with Metta World Peace.

"It was very intense," said Mavericks rookie Jae Crowder, who spent his share of time trying to guard Bryant. "From the crowd standpoint, from the player standpoint, from the officiating. You could tell."

Three times in the final 3 minutes, Bryant put the Lakers up four after the Mavericks had pulled within two. The last gave Los Angeles a 101-97 lead with 46.9 seconds left.

Nowitzki scored to make it a two-point game, and World Peace missed a free throw to give Dallas a chance to tie. Mayo missed a 3-pointer with about 5 seconds left, and Bryant clinched it with a free throw that made it a two-possession game.

"That's why he's Kobe Bryant," Lakers coach Mike D'Antoni said. "He's not John Smith. No disrespect to John Smith, whoever he is. That's what does. That's what he loves. That's what he trains for."

Nash had 13 of his 20 points and three of his four 3-pointers in the second half, including one that answered Mayo's only bucket from long range and put the Lakers up 99-95.

"He came on in the second half and really gave us a big boost," Bryant said. "He was very aggressive and it forced them to make changes defensively. He's extremely clutch."

Dwight Howard had three big free throws in the fourth, including one that put Los Angeles ahead for good at 91-90, and finished with nine points and 13 rebounds.

The Lakers had the biggest lead at six - several times - and the Mavericks erased each one through three quarters. Nowitzki's 3-pointer from the top of the key late in the third made him 4 of 4 from long range and capped a 7-0 run for a 71-70 Dallas lead, but Bryant scored twice on drives after a timeout to put the Lakers in front again.

In the first half, Nowitzki was 5 of 8 from the floor, made both 3-pointers and all four free throws and led everyone with eight rebounds. Bryant, meanwhile, was 3 of 4 from long range, including a pair from well behind the arc, but just 1 of 6 inside the line. He had a game-high six assists before halftime.

NOTES: Bryant got a technical in the first quarter when he gestured at referee Ken Mauer after Darren Collison stole ball. It was his league-leading 13th technical - one ahead of DeMarcus Cousins of Sacramento. A one-game suspension is in order when a player reaches 16 technicals. ... Mavericks C Chris Kaman entered the game in the second quarter after missing 10 straight games with a concussion. ... The Mavericks scored at least 30 points in the first quarter for the fifth time in six games.

THE FACTS: With their teams fighting to get into the playoff picture, superstars Kobe Bryant and Dirk Nowitzki staged a classic duel Sunday afternoon at the American Airlines Center. Bryant scored 14 of his 38 points in the fourth quarter to carry his Los Angeles Lakers to a 103-99 victory against the Dallas Mavericks, who were led by Nowitzki's season-high 30 points.

Bryant was 5-for-5 in the fourth and 13-for-21 for the game. He scored his 31,000th career point and added 12 rebounds and seven assists. Steve Nash scored a season-high 20 points for the Lakers (28-29), who have won five straight in Dallas and eight of the last nine regular-season meetings against the Mavericks.

Nowitzki was 11-for-19 and grabbed 13 rebounds for his first double-double of the season, but he was the only Dallas starter to score in double figures. Vince Carter had 15 points and Elton Brand added 14 off the bench for the Mavericks (25-30), who had their three-game winning streak snapped in a tight battle that featured 10 ties and 20 lead changes. Neither team led by more than six points throughout.

QUOTABLE: "All he needs is the ball. Just throw it over to him and that's how he likes to operate."

THE STAT: With a 3-pointer at the 4:50 mark of the second quarter, Bryant became the youngest member of the 31,000-point club at the age of 34 years and 185 days. He surpassed Wilt Chamberlain (36-164), Karl Malone (36-267), Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (36-323) and Michael Jordan (39-296). He finished with 31,027 points.

TURNING POINT: After a fast-break dunk by Nowitzki gave Dallas a 90-87 lead with 6:41 to play, the Mavericks didn't score again until Carter's 10-footer with 2:50 left. Aided by technical fouls called against both Nowitzki and O.J. Mayo, the Lakers took the lead for good during that span with seven unanswered points at the free-throw line.

QUOTABLE II: "It's difficult. It's obviously difficult. He hit some very difficult shots. We ran at him a few times. One time we ran at him and [Steve] Nash hit a 3. It's tough when he has it going like that."

HOT: After going 2-for-37 from 3-point range in his previous 16 games, Bryant broke out of his slump with a 4-for-5 effort from downtown. The Lakers shot 52 percent (13-for-25) from deep.

NOT: The Mavs' starting backcourt of Mayo and Darren Collison were held to a combined 15 points on 5-for-20 shooting. Down by three with 4.9 seconds left, Mayo's 3-point attempt from the corner bounced off the rim. ... Metta World Peace managed just two rebounds, one assist and one point in nearly 37 minutes, missing all six of his field-goal attempts.

BAD MOVE: Bryant was whistled for his 13th technical foul at the 9:16 mark of the first quarter for arguing a non-call. If he reaches 16 technicals, he would have to serve a one-game suspension.

NOTABLE: Mavericks guard Rodrigue Beaubois celebrated his 25th birthday Sunday... Mavericks center Chris Kaman returned to action after missing 10 games due to a concussion. ... The Lakers are 21-3 when leading after three quarters. ... Los Angeles came in with an 0-6 record on the front end of back-to-backs. ... The Mavericks had a 44-24 scoring edge in the paint and a 16-1 advantage in second-chance points. ... Dallas had 19 assists, snapping a streak of 21 consecutive games with 20 or more. ... After blocking a franchise-record 17 shots in Friday's win at New Orleans, the Mavericks only had one block against the Lakers.
