For all the heartbreak and feelings of betrayal Cleveland fans have experienced since LeBron James left, the MVP's defection to South Beach and the Cavaliers' subsequent losing season contributed to Kyrie Irving becoming the new face of the franchise.

Though James' high praise for the second-year point guard has rumors swirling the two could eventually join forces in Cleveland, both players simply are focused on the stellar competition each currently provides for the other.

James looks to improve to 8-1 against his former team while guiding the Miami Heat to an 11th consecutive victory as they host Irving and the Cavaliers on Sunday night.

The Cavaliers finished an Eastern Conference-worst 19-63 the season after James' departure while the Heat made it to the NBA finals, but winning the draft lottery allowed Cleveland to select Irving with the No. 1 overall pick.

While James has won another MVP and his only championship since joining Miami, Irving's potential has Cleveland fans believing in a bright future - one that has the possibility of including both.

Irving, despite missing 11 games with a broken finger, has averaged 23.5 points, made his first All-Star appearance and won the 3-point contest at All-Star weekend after winning rookie of the year in 2011-12.

James, who can opt out of his current contract in 2014, has taken notice of Irving's talent, leading to rumors he would consider a return to his former team.

"I said it earlier this year or last year that in a couple years, he'd be (one of the) top two or top three best point guards in the league. He's headed there already," James said over All-Star weekend. "His ability to shoot the ball, his ability to drive the ball and finish - I think he's one of the best finishers we have in our game.

"He's doing some great things right now and they should be excited about having him in Cleveland."

Whether James joins Irving is a possibility neither is focusing on at this point. For now, Irving simply realizes facing James always will provide a challenge.

"He's taken everything everybody said about him that he didn't do well (when he first left Cleveland) and is proving it all the time now," Irving said. "That's as simply put as you can say it. He's doing everything people said he couldn't do. It's fun to watch."

Irving averaged 16.7 points in three meetings with James and the Heat last season, but his broken finger forced him to miss Miami's 110-108 win Nov. 24.

James, averaging 26.3 points against his former team, hit 10 of 16 shots and scored 30 points in that contest, also assisting on Ray Allen's go-ahead 3-pointer with 18 seconds remaining as the Heat rallied from a seven-point deficit with less than two minutes to play.

James recorded his 43rd career triple-double, including the postseason, as Miami (39-14) extended its winning streak with a 114-90 victory at Philadelphia on Saturday.

"I was going to stay out there until I got it," said James, who finished with 16 points, 10 rebounds and 11 assists. "I wasn't going to let this one slip away. I've had too many games where I was one assist, one rebound away. I wasn't coming out."

James' lone triple-double against Cleveland, coincidentally, came on the road in his only loss to the Cavaliers.

Irving finished with 12 points and nine assists in Saturday's 118-94 win over Orlando as Cleveland (18-37) made its first stop on a three-game trip that concludes Tuesday in Chicago.

"We're just trying to win as many games as possible," Irving said. "In order to do that, we just have to find consistency on this team and it starts with this road trip. It is a challenge for us as a team and we are looking forward to it."

The Heat, kicking off a three-game stretch at AmericanAirlines Arena, are an East-best 23-3 at home.

Heat blow huge lead then beat Cavs for 11th in row

MIAMI (AP) Dwyane Wade got hot down the stretch, and LeBron James missed a layup in the final minute.

Both were huge breaks for the Miami Heat.

James scored 28 points, Wade scored 11 of his 24 in the final five minutes - when Miami needed him most - and the Heat extended the NBA's longest current winning streak to 11 games, beating the Cleveland Cavaliers 109-105 in a back-and-forth matchup Sunday night.

The Heat blew a 22-point second-half lead then rallied from eight down with 5:16 left.

"We're a veteran ballclub and we've been in every situation that an NBA game can offer us," James said. "We don't get too high, we don't get too low, we just play the 48 minutes out and see where it takes us."

Dion Waiters scored 26 points, C.J. Miles added 19 and Kyrie Irving scored 17 for Cleveland, which outscored Miami by a stunning 30 points over a 17-minute stretch of the second half, yet still came up empty.

The Cavaliers are now 1-8 against the Heat since James signed with Miami in July 2010.

"We had a very good chance against a very good basketball team, the world champions, and we lost the game because of mental mistakes," Cavaliers coach Byron Scott said. "That's just something that we can't have happen again."

In fairness, it wasn't just mental mistakes that doomed Cleveland late. There was a bit of luck involved for the Heat.

Miami was up by two and held possession with 1:03 remaining. The shot clock was running down and Chris Bosh was open to try a 16-footer from the right wing. As Bosh was about to release, James got inexplicably free under the basket, thrusting both his arms skyward. Bosh threw him the pass - and James, enjoying the best shooting season of his career, did the unthinkable: He missed the easy one.

This is where the luck comes into play.

The rebound found its way back to Bosh, the Heat ran down another shot clock, and Wade got loose for a two-handed dunk that pushed Miami's lead to 105-101 with 24.4 seconds left.

It was a double-whammy for Cleveland. Miami scored and took nearly 40 seconds off a dwindling clock in the process.

"Hey, I'm a smart player. That's what basketball IQ is all about," James said afterward, unable to hold back a sly grin. "I have no idea how I blew that layup. But it did work out for us. Got an extra possession, D-Wade was able to turn the corner and get a slam."

Said Heat coach Erik Spoelstra: "I liked that play."

Wade started what turned into a 16-4 run with a fadeaway with just under 5 minutes to go, then added a three-point play on the next Miami possession to cut the Cavs' lead to 97-94.

And after Irving missed a layup with 1:35 left, Wade got the rebound and set up Battier for a 3-pointer that put Miami on top again - and for good.

"I thought that we had the game," Cavaliers forward Alonzo Gee said.

Sure looked like that was the case, after a ridiculously good third quarter.

Down 68-46 early in the third, the Cavaliers looked finished - last-place team, on the road, against the reigning NBA champions who just happened to have the league's longest current winning streak.

Midway through the third, Miami's lead was still 17.

With two minutes left in the period, the cushion was 10.

By the start of the fourth, it was nonexistent.

The C.J. Miles Show lasted for all of 63 seconds. And they were a scintillating 63 seconds.

It starts with 1:35 left, a 3-pointer from Miles getting the Miami lead down to seven. Then he got a rebound, came downcourt and connected on another 3-pointer. Lead down to four. Another stop by the Cavs on one end, then another 3-pointer for Miles on the other - that one coming both with him drawing a foul from Chalmers, and with Spoelstra getting hit with a technical from referee Ed Malloy for arguing.

Miles made the technical free throw to tie the game, the free throw for the Chalmers hit to put the Cavs ahead, and they carried that 82-81 lead into the fourth, having closed the quarter on a 36-13 run.

"Guys just finally decided to start playing," Miles said.

Miami used a 23-4 run in the first half to take what looked like a commanding 42-22 lead - with more than 9 minutes left until the break. And after Cleveland got within seven, Miami answered with another burst.

James didn't miss in the final 4:29 of the half, scoring 10 points on a 4-for-4 run from the floor and fueling what became 16-5 spurt that gave Miami a 64-46 lead going into the locker room. And for good measure, Miami got the first two baskets of the second half, pushing the lead to 22, the biggest of the night.

Over, right?

Not even remotely close. Not until the final frantic seconds, as the Heat not only extended their win streak but won for the fourth time in five nights.

"We found a way," Wade said. "I felt like in the first three quarters, I couldn't move. But in the fourth, you just find it. ... We just turned that other switch on."

NOTES: Miami's two wins over Cleveland this season, both at home, have come by a combined six points. ... The Cavs were without Daniel Gibson (personal) and Omri Casspi, who remained hospitalized in Orlando after surgery to remove his appendix. ... Heat F Mike Miller (ear infection) was back with the team Sunday, though did not play. "He can't hear anything we're saying," Spoelstra quipped before the game. ... The Heat held a moment of silence pregame for Los Angeles Lakers owner Dr. Jerry Buss, the moment ending with warm applause from the crowd.

THE FACTS: The Miami Heat defeated the Cleveland Cavaliers 109-105 Sunday at AmericanAirlines Arena.

A strong fourth quarter by Dwyane Wade kept the Heat from blowing a 22-point, first-half lead to capture their 11th straight victory. Wade scored 15 of his 24 points in the fourth to help the Heat rally from an eight-point deficit in the quarter.

The Heat regained the good when forward Shane Battier hit a 3-pointer from the wing to make it 103-101 with 1:27 left. Guard Mario Chalmers then sealed with a pair of free throws with 18.2 seconds remaining.

Forward LeBron James led all scorers with 28 points and eight assists. The Heat had five players in double figures, including Chalmers (16), Battier (14) and Ray Allen (11).

The Cavs were led by Dion Waiters' 26 points.

QUOTABLE: "Our team was a little slow, four games in a five nights. A young team came in and put it on us, but we're a veteran team. We found a way and we got ourselves an opportunity to get back in the game. We smelled it and we took it from there."

THE STAT: The Heat shot 12 of 19 (62 percent) from the 3-point line.

TURNING POINT: The Heat went on an 11-2 run late in the fourth quarter, keyed by nine points from Wade. Miami trailed 97-89 with 5:16 left.

HOT: Wade got hot at the right the time. After starting 3-of-8 from the field, he closed with a strong fourth quarter. His play late kept the Heat afloat.

NOT: It was perhaps the first time forward Chris Andersen didn't appear a good fit with the Heat. At times, he looked lost and not on the same page with teammates. It showed he's not there yet conditioning-wise.

GOOD MOVE: After James carried the load for three quarters, the Heat turned things over to Wade in the fourth. James became somewhat passive, almost deferring to the hotter Wade.

BAD MOVE: The Cavs showed their youth in the closing moments. They took several bad shots after playing with poise for most of the game. In the end, this loss could be blamed on their lack of experience.

NOTABLE: The Heat improved to 24-3 at home ... Heat swingman Mike Miller, who missed three games with an ear and sinus infection, was active ... The Cavs were without role player Omri Casspi, who remains hospitalized after having his appendix removed. Also inactive was Daniel Gibson. He didn't play for personal reasons.
