In a short period, the Denver Nuggets have gone from one of the league's hottest teams to suffering through their toughest stretch of the season.

The dismal play of the Charlotte Bobcats in their last game proves it could always be worse, though.

Denver looks to avoid a fifth consecutive road loss by defeating lowly Charlotte for the fourth straight time Saturday night.

The Nuggets surged to a nine-game winning streak from Jan. 20-Feb. 9, looking dominant at times while winning by an average of 12.5 points per contest. That momentum quickly faded, though, as they lost their last three games prior to the All-Star break - all on the road.

Following a 97-90 home win over Boston on Tuesday, Denver (34-22) fell 119-113 visiting a Washington team that entered with only 15 victories. It now will be looking to avoid its first five-game road skid since dropping six in a row from Dec. 8-28, 2009.

Ty Lawson, averaging 27.4 points over his last five, finished with 27 points and 12 assists while Wilson Chandler added 22 points off the bench for Denver, which has allowed an average of 116.3 points during the current road losing streak. It was giving up 102.1 points per game away from home prior to this stretch.

"I'm a little concerned that we don't respect the opponent on the road enough to think defense first and then worry about offense - because offense usually happens when we play defense," coach George Karl said.

The Nuggets haven't met much resistance, though, when facing the Bobcats recently, winning the last three meetings by an average of 21.0 points. Denver won the last matchup 110-88 on Dec. 22 despite Lawson going scoreless.

That contest accounted for one of 10 defeats by at least 20 points for league-worst Charlotte (13-42), which is coming off a 105-75 loss to Chicago on Friday.

The Bobcats, who have dropped 19 of their last 21 home games, shot 33.3 percent from the field, dropping them to an NBA-worst 42.0 percent on the season.

Kemba Walker scored 27 points, including half of the team's 38 in the second half. He's averaging 25.0 over his last three.

"We started off too late," Walker said. "We have to kick it off from the jump. I blame myself. I had to set the tempo."

Walker may have a tough time keeping his hot stretch rolling, though, as he has scored only 19 points combined while shooting 32.0 percent in two career games versus Denver.

Byron Mullens entered Friday's contest averaging 19.8 points and 9.8 rebounds over his last four, but he hit only 1 of 12 from the field and finished with two points and four boards.

It seems unlikely the Bobcats can expect much of a contribution from Ben Gordon going forward after he didn't play for the first time since Dec. 26 despite being active.

Gordon had expressed his desire to be traded by Thursday's deadline, and it appears his role will continue to diminish through the second half of the season despite being Charlotte's highest-paid player.

"You're trying to develop a core, so you want to get those young guys minutes," coach Mike Dunlap said.

These teams have split eight all-time meetings in Charlotte.

Nuggets end road woes with 113-99 win over Bobcats

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) Ty Lawson has set a goal for the Denver Nuggets as they close the regular season: eighteen wins.

Denver took a step in the right direction Saturday night, pulling away from the Charlotte Bobcats in the fourth quarter for a 113-99 win that snapped a four-game road losing streak.

Lawson had a team-high 20 points, marking the 13th time in 19 games he's reached the 20-point plateau, and JaVale McGee had 17 points, including seven of his team's 14 dunks.

"If we get to 53 or 54 (wins) I think that we'll get that fourth seed" in the playoffs, Lawson said. "But we know it's going to be a grind for the next couple weeks, couple months."

Perhaps not - if Lawson keeps playing the way he has.

Nuggets coach George Karl said Lawson has developed a better understanding of the rhythm of the game and is becoming more assertive in running the offense. He also said Lawson is gaining confidence with his jumper - something he didn't have earlier this season.

The rest, Karl said, might be out of his hands.

"If he got a fair whistle, he would probably score a lot more points," Karl said.

At several points during the game Karl argued for a foul to be called against the Bobcats. He was slapped with a technical foul when he offered a sarcastic response to the referees after a call finally went his way.

"Ty sometimes is so strong and so quick, I think he gets hit but he doesn't get knocked off balance," Karl said. "As we are aware, a foul is a foul. I have always felt that skinny guys get more calls than strong fullback type guys. Ty has that body that, you know, he is as fast as anyone in the game but he doesn't ever get knocked off balance and because of that I don't think he gets as many calls as he deserves."

Lawson said the big difference in recent weeks has been being more aggressive and attacking the basket.

"I figure when I start being aggressive and getting to the lane, things happen for me whether it's scoring or getting assists," Lawson said.

The Nuggets hadn't won on the road since Jan. 23 but scored 66 points in the paint behind 14 dunks to snap the skid.

Lawson had nine of his 20 points in the final quarter and handed out five assists as the Nuggets broke open a close game early in the fourth with a flurry of fast-break points.

Kenneth Faried finished with 15 points on 7-of-9 shooting, Corey Brewer had 14 and Andre Iguodala chipped in with 13 points and 10 assists.

"We just played Nuggets basketball," Faried said. "We ran and were able to get those turnovers, so it helped out on the break."

The Nuggets (35-22), who came in having lost four of their last five overall, led 83-74 entering the fourth quarter.

That's when Lawson took over, repeatedly driving to the hole for easy baskets. Forced to defend Lawson, the Nuggets moved the ball well, resulting in some easy alley-oop dunks for McGee and Faried.

Lawson finally sealed it with about five minutes to play when he put the ball between his legs, freezing Walker, and drove to the basket to score and draw the foul to push the lead to 15.

The Nuggets came in third in the league in scoring and got their high-flying act in gear with nine dunks in the first half to build a 60-54 lead at the break.

Denver shot 53 percent for the game.

Kemba Walker recorded his fourth straight 20-point game for the Bobcats, finishing with 24 on 9-of-14 shooting. Gerald Henderson added 19 points and rookie Jeffery Taylor had 18 for the Bobcats, who have lost 11 of their last 13 - including three straight at home.

Denver forced 18 Charlotte turnovers, leading to 23 points.

"We had a lot of turnovers that led to a lot of fast break points for them," Taylor said. "We usually keep our turnover count down, so that was a little uncharacteristic for us."

Things won't get much easier for the NBA-worst Bobcats (13-43) as they depart on the four-game trip beginning Tuesday night against the Los Angeles Clippers.

Bobcats coach Mike Dunlap was pleased with his team's energy, but agreed that turnovers were the difference.

"We'd turn it over and they'd get an easy basket," Dunlap said.

NOTES: Byron Mullens, who had been on fire in recent weeks, was sluggish for the second straight night. Over the past two games, Mullens is 2 of 21 from the field for six points. ... Josh McRoberts, acquired in a trade with Orlando earlier in the week, saw his first action for the Bobcats and had three rebounds but didn't score. ... Faried scored in double figures for the 36th time this season.

THE FACTS: Ty Lawson scored a team-best 20 points and led six Denver Nuggets in double figures for a 113-99 win over the Charlotte Bobcats Saturday night at Time Warner Cable Arena. Kemba Walker led all scorers with 24 for the Bobcats, who are 2-9 in February.

QUOTABLE: "It's a good win for us. It feels great to be back playing in the Carolinas. We're trying to get 18 more wins to get that number four seed. We need to focus. We can be a good team when we focus and are on the same game plan. It's going to be a grind."

THE STAT: The Nuggets used their deep bench to their advantage Saturday night. Denver's reserves outscored Charlotte's 45-28 and were led by JaVale McGee's 17 points and six rebounds. McGee had seven dunks and helped the Nuggets to 66 points in the paint.

TURNING POINT: The game changed at the 4:41 mark of the second quarter when Kemba Walker picked up his third foul and was sent to the bench with the game tied 47-46. The Nuggets went on a 13-8 run to close the half and never looked back.

QUOTABLE II: "In the second half our defense got more solid. We had a solid game from a big group of guys that really got us going in a big way. The guys were out there playing hard on both ends and it really showed in how we played tonight."

HOT: Kenneth Faried set the tone in the interior for Denver Saturday. The forward had 15 points on 7-of-9 shooting and added five rebounds. It was his first time in double figures since February 12 and the 36th time this season he reached double figures. Denver's forwards and centers were dominant against the Bobcats and combined to shoot 25-of-38 from the floor and score 57 points.

NOT: Byron Mullens had been on a tear for the Bobcats since returning to the lineup on February 4, but that came to a screaming halt this weekend. Saturday against Denver he scored four points and was 1-of-9 from the floor and missed all three of his 3-point attempts. For the weekend, Mullens was 2-of-21 from the floor and missed all seven of his 3-point attempts and finished with only six points.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Kemba Walker has been the lone bright spot for the Bobcats of late. He finished the game with 24 points and five assists with a shooting night which saw him make 9-of-14 from the floor and 5-of-6 from the charity stripe. Walker is averaging 24.8 points in his last four games. This is Walker's longest stretch in his career in which he has scored 20 or more points in a game.

GOOD MOVE: Sitting Gallinari. Denver coach George Karl chose to play Danilo Gallinari just 15 minutes and rest the team's leading scorer who has a left thigh bruise. Gallinari had six points on 2-of-3 shooting from behind the arc.

ROOKIE WATCH: Charlotte rookie Jeffery Taylor had a career-high 18 points off the bench and played 33 minutes. He added three rebounds, two assists, two steals and two blocks to his stat line. Michael Kidd-Gilchrist was again in double figures with 12 points and four rebounds.

NOTABLE: The Bobcats have been swept by eight teams this season including seven teams from the Western Conference. Gerald Henderson scored in double figures for the 10th time in 11 games and the 31st time this season. Walker is the sixth player in franchise history to post a streak of at least four straight games with 20-plus points. Josh McRoberts saw his first action as a member of the Bobcats. He played six minutes and grabbed three rebounds in that time. Nuggets guard Andre Iguodala handed out a season-high 10 assists, recording his first points-assists double-double of the season and his sixth overall. The Nuggets are 7-2 when shooting 80 percent or better from the charity stripe. Denver is now 18-6 when recording 10 or more steals after collecting 11 against Charlotte. The Nuggets are 22-3 when holding opponents under 100 points.
