Hawks-Bucks Preview

The Milwaukee Bucks were in discussions earlier this week to acquire Josh Smith from the Atlanta Hawks. That deal never materialized, so the Bucks picked up a different player they hope can help them make the playoffs.

J.J. Redick is expected to make his Bucks debut Saturday night when Smith and the Hawks open their longest road trip of the season.

With Atlanta shopping Smith, who becomes an unrestricted free agent at season's end, the Bucks were one of the teams in trade talks to acquire the Hawks' leading scorer and shot blocker.

"There was never a true offer on the table from Atlanta," Milwaukee general manager John Hammond said. "They never said this is exactly what it will take to get a deal done, but we just continued to negotiate, talk and exchange ideas until the very last moment. It was a possibility."

Smith might have been a nice addition to the Bucks' frontcourt, but instead, the team is welcoming one of the top 3-point shooters in the NBA.

Redick was acquired from Orlando on Thursday along with center Gustavo Ayon and point guard Ish Smith in exchange for rookie Doron Lamb, Beno Udrih and Tobias Harris.

Redick, who like Smith is in the final year of his deal, is averaging a career-high 15.1 points with a career-best 117 3s. The former first-round pick sees no problem playing alongside starting guards Monta Ellis and Brandon Jennings, who have accounted for 39.6 percent of the Bucks' field-goal attempts.

"I don't need the ball in my hands a lot," said Redick, whose 45.0 percent shooting from the field is the best of his seven-year career. "I don't need a lot of touches, a lot of dribbles. That's not my game."

While the Bucks (26-27) are hoping Redick's addition can help them at least hang on to their current No. 8 position in the East, the Hawks (30-23) are trying to get closer to the top. They're one game behind Chicago and 1 1/2 back of Brooklyn for fourth place.

This is the first meeting with Milwaukee this season and the opener of a six-game trip for Atlanta, which defeated Sacramento 122-108 on Friday for its third win in four games.

"I'm glad I'm here," said Smith, who had 18 points on 8-of-12 shooting. "We've got to think about moving forward and keep pushing for better playoff position."

The Bucks have similar thoughts but have lost eight of 10, and they'll be making their run without a player who would have added great versatility. Smith is averaging 8.6 boards, and Milwaukee has outrebounded only one of its last 11 opponents.

"I really thought we were going to get Josh Smith," said Jennings, who averaged 23.7 points and 9.0 assists as the Bucks dropped two of three to Atlanta last season. "Just the fact the trade talks said he wanted to play in Milwaukee and things like that. It didn't happen, so we have to see Josh Smith tomorrow."

The Bucks might not be looking forward to that matchup, as Smith is averaging 20.8 points, 15.0 rebounds and 2.8 blocks while posting five consecutive double-doubles against Milwaukee.

Jennings has totaled 65 points in two games since the All-Star break, but the Bucks were swept in a home-and-home set with the Nets.

Horford's late bucket lifts Hawks over Bucks

MILWAUKEE (AP) Al Horford was looking to get the ball to teammate Devin Harris with the clock winding down in the fourth quarter and the Atlanta Hawks trailing by one.

When the Milwaukee Bucks clamped down on Harris, Horford backed down defender Larry Sanders, who leads the league in blocked shots per game, and hit a baby hook shot with 5.9 seconds left as the Hawks rallied late for a 103-102 victory Saturday night.

"I was trying to get Devin a handoff," Horford said. "They played that real good. So I just kind of went ahead and ... I just made a strong play to the basket."

Horford's shot came after a driving layup by Monta Ellis had given the Bucks a 102-101 lead with 10.8 seconds left. Ellis missed a running shot in the lane as time expired.

Horford finished with 23 points and 11 rebounds, Jeff Teague also scored 23 and added nine assists, and Harris contributed 21 points for Atlanta.

"I knew when we got the ball into Al's hands, he was going to make a play and he did what a great player is supposed to do. He finished it off," Teague said.

The tight game featured 18 lead changes and was tied 13 times, but the Bucks led by as much as 10 late in the fourth quarter before the Hawks rallied.

"We were able to maintain our composure, particularly in the second half," Atlanta coach Larry Drew said. "When we went down ten, we didn't panic. We came up with some big plays down the stretch."

Drew praised the play of Horford.

"I thought Al Horford was huge. He came up with some big baskets. Defensively, he also altered some shots."

Ersan Ilyasova had 19 points and newly-acquired J.J. Redick added 16 points and seven assists for Milwaukee. Sanders added 12 points and 19 rebounds, one off of his career high.

After taking a 100-93 lead, the Bucks went more than 3 minutes without a basket.

A 3-pointer by Josh Smith cut Milwaukee's lead to 100-99 and after a shot-clock violation by the Bucks, Horford dunked to put the Hawks up 101-100 with 1:28 remaining.

Ilyasova then had a layup attempt blocked and Kyle Korver missed from 3-point range for the Hawks. After a Bucks turnover, Horford missed a hook shot with 15.2 seconds left.

"I thought our guys played hard. I thought we played well enough to win the game," Bucks coach Jim Boylan said. "Every time we seemed to get some sort of comfortable lead against them, they'd bang a 3.

"The games keep coming, so you don't have a chance to really feel sorry for yourself."

Milwaukee jumped out to a 27-19 lead at the end of a first quarter that featured three technical fouls. The Bucks' Brandon Jennings was whistled for arguing a foul call and officials assessed a double technical on Milwaukee's Samuel Dalembert and Atlanta's Zaza Pachulia after they tangled under the basket.

Pachulia, who set a Hawks franchise record with seven offensive rebounds in the second quarter, also picked up a flagrant foul in the fourth when he fouled John Henson on a drive to the basket. He and Dalembert pointed at each other and exchanged words.

"I told him that I set the franchise record with seven offensive rebounds in a quarter. He was mad," Pachulia said.

Redick made his first appearance in a Bucks uniform midway through the first quarter. Acquired from Orlando in a Feb. 21 trade deadline deal, Redick entered to a standing ovation.

"I feel like I was brought here to help this team win and secure a good playoff position," he said. "I'm a competitor and I certainly didn't want to start off with a loss. We did some good things tonight and I enjoyed playing with this group."

Notes: Milwaukee worked to acquire Josh Smith, Atlanta's leading scorer, right up until the deadline, but he ended up remaining with the Hawks. "Josh has been a super player for us," Atlanta coach Larry Drew said. "I'm glad he's still a Hawk.". Although both teams play in the Eastern Conference, Milwaukee and Atlanta met for the first time this season. "We're almost into March and this is our first meeting. It feels a little weird," Drew said. . Atlanta's DeShawn Stevenson wasn't available Saturday night due to a coach's decision not to play him in the second of back-to-back games in order to minimize wear on his knees. . University of Wisconsin men's basketball coach Bo Ryan was in attendance. Harris played for Ryan at Wisconsin.

THE FACTS: Al Horford banked in a short half-hook from the right block with 5.9 seconds left, giving the Atlanta Hawks a 103-102 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks Saturday night at the BMO Harris Bradley Center.

Horford capped a 23-point, 11-rebound night as the Hawks (31-23) overcame a 10-point deficit in the last 6:43 to win for the fourth time in their last five games.

Jeff Teague also scored 23 points and dished out nine assists, and Josh Smith, the subject of intense trade rumors with the Bucks before the trading deadline, added 15 points, 13 rebounds and five assists.

Ersan Ilyasova led the Bucks with 19 points and nine rebounds and J.J. Redick had 16 points in his Milwaukee debut. But they couldn't stop the reeling Bucks (26-28) from losing for the ninth time in 11 games.

Monta Ellis (14 points, 10 assists) gave the Bucks a 102-101 lead with 10.8 seconds left with a running scoop layup down the right side of the lane, but after a timeout, Horford backed down Milwaukee's Larry Sanders and made his game-winner. Milwaukee had no timeouts left, and Ellis' running 15-footer hit off the back rim at the buzzer.

QUOTABLE: "We were trying to go to Devin [Harris]. I was trying to give Devin a handoff and they played that real well, so my second option was to face and try to go. I know he was conscious of not fouling and I went ahead and made a strong play to the basket."

THE STAT: The Hawks went 14-for-28 on 3-pointers on the night, to just 4-for-12 for the Bucks. Every time Milwaukee built a bit of a lead, the Hawks had an answer from beyond the arc.

TURNING POINT: A Brandon Jennings jumper with 3:30 left gave the Bucks a 100-93 lead, but Harris made his fourth 3-pointer of the night with 2:12 left, and Smith made his second of the night with 1:56 left to make it a one-point game. A lob dunk by Horford with 1:28 left gave the Hawks their first lead of the final quarter and set up the finish.

QUOTABLE II: "Our scouting report said to get in there and kick it. Just keep driving it in and kicking it. [Larry Sanders] is a talented player and he's going to make plays on the ball, so we just wanted to drive and kick it and we made shots tonight."

HOT: Ilyasova made 9 of his 10 shots in the first 42 minutes.

NOT: Ilyasova went 0-for-5 over the final six minutes, with the first two of them being blocked by Horford.

INSIDE THE ARENA: University of Wisconsin basketball coach Bo Ryan was in the stands. Ryan coached Hawks guard Harris, a Milwaukee native, at Wisconsin.

BAD MOVE: The Bucks could not get the ball inbounds after a timeout with 15.2 seconds left and had to burn their final 20-second timeout to prevent a turnover. That turned out to be huge when they couldn't call a timeout after Horford's basket and inbound the ball in the front court.

ROOKIE WATCH: Milwaukee's John Henson had 11 points and six rebounds in 15 minutes. ... Atlanta's John Jenkins made 3 of his 4 3-point attempts to finish with nine points in 19 minutes.

NOTABLE: The game was the first for Redick in a Milwaukee uniform. He finished with 16 points and seven assists in 35 minutes. More notable, he played five more minutes than Jennings. ... The Bucks lead the league at 7.60 blocks per game but had just two. ...The game opened a six-game road trip for the Hawks, who don't get back to Atlanta until March 5. ... This was the first meeting of the season between the teams. They'll meet three more times over the final 28 games. ... Sanders finished with 12 points and 19 rebounds -- one rebound short of his career high established Dec. 21 at Boston. ... Zaza Pachulia had a busy night, setting a franchise record with seven offensive rebounds in a quarter (the second) and also picking up a technical foul and a flagrant foul.
