Knicks-Raptors Preview

Carmelo Anthony and Rudy Gay had plenty of problems getting untracked when the New York Knicks and Toronto Raptors met last week.

These Baltimore natives combined for 36 missed shots, and the Raptors prevailed in an ugly game.

They'll try to hand the visiting Knicks a season-high fourth straight loss Friday night.

Toronto (22-33) won 92-88 at New York last Wednesday, and neither one of these players was on target much. Gay made 4 of 21 shots for 11 points while Anthony was 5 of 24 for 12 points to go with 12 rebounds, although the Knicks forward said afterward that he was plagued by a dead arm.

Alan Anderson scored 26 and DeMar DeRozan added 20 to help make up for Gay's woes while J.R. Smith led New York (32-19) with 26 points in a contest that featured 56 free throws and six technical fouls.

The Knicks are enduring their second three-game slide and their lead atop the Atlantic Division has been cut to one game over Brooklyn.

"We got Toronto who played well at our place a week ago, they beat us and they're playing well," New York coach Mike Woodson said.

Anthony didn't fare much better his next time out, making 7 of 21 shots for 15 points as the Knicks suffered their worst loss, 125-91 at Indiana on Wednesday in their first game since the All-Star break.

"We didn't show up," Woodson said. "They whipped our (expletive) from beginning to end."

The coach admitted he is searching for answers on the perimeter since his current starting backcourt features Raymond Felton, a 40.3 percent shooter, and Jason Kidd, who is at 38.9.

"When 'Melo is struggling a little bit and Raymond and Kidd not making shots, that's tough," Woodson said. "We're going to have to work through it and figure it out."

Gay followed up his poor performance against the Knicks with a 24-point effort as Toronto matched a season high with a fifth straight win, 96-88 Washington on Tuesday. He found things more difficult the next night as he made 5 of 15 shots for 13 points in an 88-82 defeat to Memphis, his former team.

Gay said that he needs to adjust to being the focal point of opponents' defenses.

"There's still ways to find to make things happen," Gay said. "You take it as a sign of respect but I think we still could've gotten this win."

The Raptors, who shot 36.6 percent against the Grizzlies, have held each of their last three opponents to 88 points. That's the type of basketball coach Dwane Casey expects to see down the stretch.

"It's about being tough, being strong with the ball, making the right decisions, not playing into the crowd, and playing with that type of mental fortitude," Casey said.

Casey has restored Amir Johnson to his starting lineup the last two games after he gave Landry Fields the start last week in New York. Fields had four points and 10 rebounds in his first game against his former team.

DeRozan had seven points on 1-of-9 shooting Wednesday - ending a string of three straight 20-point performances - but his 19.3 scoring average against the Knicks is his highest against any team.

TORONTO (AP) Knicks coach Mike Woodson didn't mince words when asked what went wrong for his team in the final minute of Friday night's narrow loss to Toronto.

"I thought our shot selection was awful," Woodson said.

Rudy Gay scored a season-high 32 points, DeMar DeRozan had 18 and the Raptors beat New York 100-98, handing the slumping Knicks their season-worst fourth straight defeat.

Carmelo Anthony and Raymond Felton both missed 3-pointers in the final minute, and Woodson made it clear he would have preferred his players drive the lane instead.

"We didn't play smart coming down the stretch," Woodson said. "We had opportunities to take the ball to the rim and make plays, and they were blowing the whistle. I have to think we would have got some calls, but we didn't. We settled."

Anthony and Felton both agreed the Knicks had executed poorly, with Anthony suggesting the recent skid was weighing on New York's mind.

"When you lose games like this it's easy to start thinking too much, overthinking what you should do, what you shouldn't do, rather than just going out there and playing basketball," Anthony said. "I think that's where we're at."

Kyle Lowry scored 15 points, Amir Johnson 12 and John Lucas 10 as the Raptors won for the sixth time in seven games.

Anthony had 32 points and J.R. Smith added 19 for the Knicks, winless since beating Minnesota on Feb. 8.

"We've got to get over this hump," Anthony said. "We've hit a bad stretch."

Brooklyn's home loss to Houston kept the Knicks one game ahead of the Nets atop the Atlantic Division. Both teams play again at home Sunday night. The Knicks host Philadelphia while the Nets face Memphis.

"We've got to go home and try to get off this slide," Woodson said.

Amare Stoudemire scored 14 points and Felton added 10 for New York, which rallied from a nine-point deficit in the fourth quarter to take the lead with 6:11 left.

Trailing 79-70 to begin the fourth, New York scored nine of the next 11 points. Toronto called a timeout after Stoudemire's dunk cut it to 81-79 with 9:09 left.

New York kept coming, tying it at 86 on Smith's 3-pointer with 6:55 left and then taking the lead 45 seconds later when Smith scored on a driving layup.

Gay made two free throws and added a jumper to put Toronto up 93-89 with 3:35 left, but New York tied it again when Anthony hit a pair from the line and Smith followed with a step-back jumper.

Gay and Anthony traded jumpers, keeping it tied, before Lowry hit a driving hook shot over Chandler to put Toronto up 97-95 with 28 seconds remaining.

"He shot a running floater over a 7-foot-1 guy," Felton said. "That's a tough shot."

Lowry fouled Chandler, who missed his first free throw but made the second, cutting it to 97-96 with 21 seconds left.

Chandler fouled out, sending Gay to the line at the other end, where he drained both to put Toronto up 99-96.

Gay was fouled again after grabbing the rebound on Anthony's missed 3 on the next possession. His first shot rolled out but the second went down, giving the Raptors a 100-96 lead with 6 seconds left.

Anthony made a layup with 3 seconds left, but the Raptors ran out the clock to earn their second win over the Knicks this season. Toronto improved to 3-8 against Atlantic Division opponents.

"That's what it's all about, playing in big games like this against a big team," DeRozan said. "We held our composure."

Anthony had 13 points but Lowry made four 3-pointers and DeRozan converted a three-point play with a second left to tie the score at 32 after one quarter.

Stoudemire scored six points in the second quarter and Chandler had five rebounds to help the Knicks take a 51-48 lead into halftime.

Held in check in the first half, Gay broke loose for 17 points in the third, connecting on seven of nine field goal attempts. One of his two misses was an off-balance jumper in the final second of the quarter.

"I just wanted to be aggressive," Gay said. "Until then I was letting the game come to me. The shots started falling, I started going to the basket and I got some foul shots."

DeRozan added eight points in the third as the Raptors took a nine-point lead into the final quarter.

NOTES: Toronto's Jonas Valanciunas had a game-high 10 rebounds. ... Raptors rookie and newly crowned slam dunk champion Terrence Ross did not dress because of flulike symptoms. ... Ex-Knick Landry Fields started for the Raptors in place of Johnson. ... Toronto F Linas Kleiza denied a report from Lithuania that he is set to retire because of lingering right knee pain. Sidelined since Dec. 28, Kleiza said he hopes to return within a week. ... The game was briefly halted when a fan ran onto the court in the fourth quarter.

THE FACTS: The Toronto Raptors (23-33) handed the New York Knicks (32-20) their fourth loss in a row, defeating them 100-98 at a sold out Air Canada Centre Friday night. This was the Raptors second consecutive win against the Knicks after beating them last Wednesday 92-88 in New York, starting their losing streak. Rudy Gay led all scorers with a season-high 32 points, DeMar DeRozan added 18 points and six assists and Kyle Lowry scored 15 points with a game-high seven assists.

The Raptors rebounded from being down as many as six points in the first half, to go on a 20-8 run in the third quarter, where Rudy Gay scored 17 points in the frame. However, the Knicks went on an 18-7 run of their own, to take their fist lead of the fourth quarter, 88-86 with 6:10 left. However Gay came up big again, scoring nine in the fourth to finish with a season-high 32 points, sinking three free throws down the stretch to close out the game scoring. Kyle Lowry's floater over Tyson Chandler with 28.9 seconds left was the game-winner, putting the Raptors up 97-95 in a game that had a distinct playoff feel.

Carmelo Anthony's 32 points and six rebounds, led the Knicks while J.R.Smith and Amar'e Stoudemire added 19 and 14 points off the bench respectively.

THE STAT: The Knicks turned over the ball 17 times, leading to 18 Raptors points, in a tough defensive game that is only decided by two points, that is too much of a margin for error.

TURNING POINT: Lowry's tough six-foot floater over Chandler's outstretched arm with 28.9 left in the game put Toronto up 97-95. The basket broke a series of seven consecutive ties between both teams and gave the Raptors the lead for good.

QUOTABLE II: "We got the switch and they were switching all night. I just wanted to try to get to the basket instead of taking the jump shot. That's a great defender (Chandler), he was the defensive player of the year so I just tried to get it to my right hand, and get the floater off and get the shot over him."

HOT: Gay erupted in the third, shooting 7-for-9 for the quarter and finishing with 17 points. He was the catalyst to the Raptors 20-8 run that got them back in the game after being down 51-48 at halftime. He finished with the game with a season-high 32, notching 24 of them in the second half.

NOT: A player, a team, either at a point in the game or for the entire game. Can follow with a sentence on how that relates to the player's/team's performance recently (not just in this game).

Gay shot 2-for-8 from the field in the first half and 0-for-3 from the field.

GOOD MOVE: Derozan switched his shoes at halftime, after shooting 3-for-7 from the field with eight points and three turnovers. He finished the game with 18 points and 6 assists on 6-for-13 shooting.

NOTABLE: The Knicks four-game losing streak is their first and longest of the season. The Raptors sellout was the eighth of the season, their most since the 2008-2009 season. A fan ran onto the court during a stoppage in play, but was immediately removed by security.
