Mavericks-Hornets Preview

Last month's meeting between the Dallas Mavericks and New Orleans Hornets marked the first starts of the season for Dirk Nowitzki and Eric Gordon.

Both teams are playing markedly better with them in the lineup, but while Nowitzki has helped get the Mavericks back into the playoff conversation, the Hornets' struggles before Gordon's return appear to be too much to overcome.

Nowitzki looks to help lead Dallas to a fifth win in six games Friday night in New Orleans.

Trying to extend their playoff streak to 13 years, the Mavericks (24-29) have little room for error in the final two months of the season. They sit in 11th place in the Western Conference, 4 1/2 games back of eighth-place Houston.

In its first game after the All-Star break Wednesday, Dallas handled woeful Orlando 111-96 to send the Magic to their 26th loss in 29 games.

"We had to have that one," said Elton Brand, who scored 17 points after averaging 5.3 in his previous eight games.

Shawn Marion also scored 17 and Nowitzki finished with 12 points and a team-high nine rebounds. The Mavericks won for the fourth time in five games and improved to 10-8 with Nowitzki in the starting lineup. They're averaging 106.1 points since he made his first start, up from 98.8.

The Hornets (19-36) have a similar record with Gordon in the starting lineup, going 9-8.

While neither of those marks on their own are particularly striking, Dallas is 14-21 without Nowitzki starting and New Orleans 10-28 with Gordon out of the starting lineup.

After missing time recovering from arthroscopic knee surgery, each made their starting debut Jan. 5 in Dallas. Nowitzki scored 20 while Gordon came up big late, completing a three-point play with 4.7 seconds left in overtime to lift the Hornets to a 99-96 victory.

Gordon, whose name was mentioned in trade rumors, sat out a 105-100 loss in Cleveland on Wednesday as the team prohibits him from playing on successive days. He scored 20 in 30 minutes of a 96-87 loss to Chicago the night before.

"I wish that (policy) was over, but we don't see it ending anytime soon," coach Monty Williams said. "For whatever reason, the doctors feel that's best for Eric. But he's healthy, so it's tough."

Although Gordon is healthy, he has been hit-or-miss in his last eight games, averaging 23.0 points and 50.0 percent shooting in four but 8.0 points and 29.4 percent in the other four.

Ryan Anderson, who leads New Orleans with 16.7 points a contest, has been mostly miss in his last two games. The NBA's 3-point leader with 160 has gone 1 of 8 from beyond the arc in those contests, totaling 17 points and shooting 22.7 percent overall.

The Hornets have won six of nine in New Orleans after starting the season 3-13 there. They're 9-1 in the last 10 against the Mavericks at home.

"They play hard and compete well," said guard O.J. Mayo, Dallas' leader at 17.8 points per game. "We're going to have to match their energy on their home court, and make sure we get that win."

Carter 3 lifts Mavs over Hornets, 104-100

NEW ORLEANS (AP) Dirk Nowitzki knows a vintage Vince Carter performance when he sees it.

So with a subtle nod, Nowitzki gave Carter the green light to take a crucial shot in the final seconds, and could not have been more pleased with the result.

Carter capped a 22-point performance with a 3-pointer that gave Dallas the lead with 6.5 seconds left, and the Mavericks held on for their third straight victory, 104-100 over the New Orleans Hornets on Friday night.

"I looked at him to see what he wanted," Carter said of Nowitzki, who was supposed to get the shot with the Mavericks trailing 100-99. "He gave me the nod to go ahead. Yes sir."

"I've never been afraid to take the big shot," said Carter, now in his 15th season. "I've never been afraid of the consequences, good or bad. I just throw all that stuff out of the window."

Nowitzki, who scored 25 points, said he and Carter noticed New Orleans making a defensive switch in the final few possessions, resulting in 7-foot forward Jason Smith covering Carter. When it happened just inside the final minute, Carter tried to drive on Smith, and found Mike James open in the left corner for a clutch 3 that made it a one-point game.

After New Orleans point guard Greivis Vasquez seemed to lose control of a shot that barely touched the front rim, Dallas started to set a play for Nowitzki and Carter wound up with the ball on the perimeter, again guarded by Smith.

"Since he just drove him the other time, I think Smith backed up a little bit and he just quick-shot him," Nowitzki said. "His 3 has been almost automatic the last couple weeks. He's been shooting it with confidence. He's been shooting it deep and that was a heck of a shot."

As the shot went down and New Orleans called for a timeout, Carter walked purposefully back to the Dallas bench without smiling, though he did exchange intense slaps of hands with Nowitzki and several other teammates.

"We're playing for a lot of marbles, of course, just trying to get ourselves back into the (playoff) race," said Carter, who hit five of his seven 3-point attempts, and also made some contested off-balance, driving floaters, including one as he fell over the baseline while being fouled. "It was a must-win game just like every game we're going to play from here on out. We're trying to approach every game with a playoff mentality. Just glad we were able to find a way."

Elton Brand added 13 points for Dallas (25-29), which is 4 1/2 games out of the last Western Conference playoff spot with 28 games left. Darren Collison scored 11, hitting a pair of free throws with 3 seconds left for the final margin.

Eric Gordon scored 23 for the Hornets, who have lost three straight, but had only three points in the second half and lost the ball out of bounds while being closely guarded by O.J. Mayo with 5.8 seconds left, costing New Orleans a chance to set up a shot to tie or lead.

"Any time you lose a game you feel bad, but any time you lose a game that way because of your mistakes, it's worse," Hornets coach Monty Williams said. "(Dallas) hit some tough shots, but it was a lot of defensive breakdowns."

Anthony Davis added 10 points and 11 rebounds, but left the game in the third quarter with a sprained right knee.

Smith scored a season-high 22 points for New Orleans and Ryan Anderson had 20, including a 3 that gave the Hornets a 100-96 lead with 55.5 seconds left.

"Down the stretch tonight, you are up by four ... and you can't make plays," Williams said. "You can't blame anybody but yourself and that is basketball 101."

New Orleans led 69-63 on Smith's jumper about midway through the third quarter, but Dallas controlled the rest of the period while Gordon was on the bench and Davis was in the locker room with his knee injury.

Brand's 14-footer and Shawn Marion's alley-oop dunk ignited a 16-3 run, capped by Carter's 3, that put the Mavs up 79-72.

Davis eventually returned to the bench with more than eight minutes to go, and Hornets officials said he was available to return. But he did little more than pedal a stationary bike and watch the finish from the bench.

"I was prepared to play if they needed me. It's fine," Davis said, adding that he expected to play Sunday against Sacramento.

The Hornets managed to rally without him, thanks in large part to Smith, who scored six points during an 8-0 run that he started by converting a three-point play off an off-balance floater in the lane.

New Orleans led 97-94 after Smith's jumper, but Nowitzki stopped the surge with 15-footer that set up the thrilling finish.

NOTES: Marion and Mayo each scored 10 points. ... Dallas has scored 100-plus points in 16 of its last 18 games. ... The Mavs made eight of their 20 3-point attempts, while New Orleans went 5 of 17 from deep.

THE FACTS: It took nearly the entirety of the game's 48 minutes, but the Dallas Mavericks found a way to put away the New Orleans Hornets, winning 104-100 on the road Friday night.

Mike James and Vince Carter hit back-to-back 3-pointers with less than a minute to play, and former New Orleans Hornet Darren Collison sank two free throws to give the Mavericks (25-29) their sixth win in the past eight games. Dallas' Dirk Nowitzki led all scorers with 25 points, while Carter scored 22 off the bench. Carter's 3-pointer that gave the Mavericks the lead for good wasn't the called play. Instead, Nowitzki motioned to the veteran to take the shot and he did, quieting the more than 16,000 in attendance. On the ensuing possession, O.J. Mayo trapped New Orleans' Eric Gordon on the sideline near midcourt. Gordon lost the ball out of bounds with 5 seconds to play and Collison hit his two free throws to put the game out of reach with just 3.1 seconds to play.

Gordon led the Hornets (19-37) with 23 points, but scored only three points in the second half on 1-for-9 shooting. Jason Smith set a season high with 22 points and Ryan Anderson added 20 points and 12 rebounds.

QUOTABLE: "The way Vince [Carter] has reinvented himself with us -- as an off-the-bench, instant-offense, playmaker, defender, all-around guy -- I think validates him as a Hall of Fame candidate. He's an eight-time All-Star."

THE STAT: Seventeen. Dallas had 17 blocked shots against New Orleans, including seven by Bernard James. While those certainly made a difference, the play that won't show up in the stat box is when James redirected a shot by Greivis Vasquez with 22 seconds to play. James touched the ball enough to make it fall short of the rim. Carter hit his 3-pointer on the next possession to seal it.

TURNING POINT: Back-to-back 3-pointers by the Mavericks with less than 55 seconds to play put the Hornets on their heels. First, former Hornets player Mike James sank a corner trey. After a bad offensive possession by New Orleans, Carter quieted the crowd with a clutch 3-pointer in front of New Orleans' bench. The 3-pointers put Dallas ahead for good.

HOT: Smith finished Friday's game 9-for-15 for a season-high 22 points for New Orleans. In the past six games, Smith -- a key reserve off the bench - has been on a tear, going 28-for-51 from the floor.

GOOD MOVE: Leaving Mayo in the game at the end in spite of his inability to play consistent offense. Mayo, a long and active guard, harried the Hornets' Gordon in the final 10 seconds, causing him to fumble the ball out of bounds in a play that sealed the game for Dallas.

NOTABLE: Hornets rookie Anthony Davis left the game in the third quarter with a sprained right knee. He returned to the bench and could have returned to the game, but Williams said he didn't want to risk furthering the injury. ... Dallas shot 65.2 percent in the first quarter and 59.1 percent in the third quarter to put the Hornets on their heels. ... With Smith scoring 20 points 22 points and Anderson scoring 20, Friday night marked the first time since May 5, 1999, that two Hornets players scored 20 points off the bench in the same game. ... Dallas forced 10 second-half turnovers by New Orleans.
