Celtics-Suns Preview

There was talk that Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett could have been dealt earlier this week. But with the trade deadline passed, the two future Hall of Famers will still be wearing Boston Celtics green.

Third-year guard Jordan Crawford will soon get his first chance to do that.

Crawford could make his Celtics debut on Friday night in Phoenix, where the Western Conference-worst Suns could have a few of their newest players in uniform.

Pierce said after Wednesday's 113-99 road loss to the Los Angeles Lakers that he hadn't talked to general manager Danny Ainge about any trade rumors involving him.

"I can't worry about that," said Pierce, who finished with a team-high 26 points. "I've got a job to do and they've got to do what's best for the franchise. I've always understood that this is just a business."

Ainge didn't move Pierce or Garnett, who would have had to waive his no-trade clause, before Thursday's deadline. Instead, Ainge pulled the trigger on a deal that sent center Jason Collins and recently injured guard Leandro Barbosa (ACL) to Washington for Crawford, who had fallen out of favor with the Wizards.

Crawford, though, is a big-time offensive threat with 12 20-point games this season. He averaged 19.1 points in 13 December games when John Wall was sidelined with an injury. Crawford will be able to play at either guard spot for coach Doc Rivers.

"Jordan's a scorer and he will provide versatility that will add great depth to our roster," Ainge said Thursday in an official press release.

The Celtics (28-26) need all the help they can get on the road, where they are 8-17. The Celtics, 0-2 on a season-high five-game trip, have lost all seven games visiting West opponents this season by an average of 16.7 points.

That could change on Friday against the lowly Suns, who are looking to bounce back from their ninth setback in 12 games, Wednesday's 108-98 loss at Golden State.

News broke earlier that Phoenix sent a second-round draft pick to Houston for forward Marcus Morris, who joins his older twin brother, Markieff, on the Suns' roster.

The two former Kansas teammates will be the second set of twins to play together in the NBA, joining Dick and Tom Van Arsdale, who were on the Suns in 1976-77.

"I think it will help both of those guys," coach Lindsey Hunter told the Suns' official website. "Any time you have your sibling it's a comfort level you have with that person. Hopefully they can push each other and keep one another going when things are going well."

Still, the Suns (18-37) aren't expecting this move - or any other one - to immediately fix what has been one of the worst seasons in team history.

"We just have to show some of the new guys what to do. It takes time," swingman Jared Dudley said. "We've already made one trade and through free agency and the draft you'll start to see our new identity forming soon."

The Suns also sent backup point guard Sebastien Telfair, who had fallen behind rookie Kendall Marshall in Hunter's rotation, to Toronto on Thursday for a 2014 second-round pick and 7-2 center Hamed Haddadi.

Despite Garnett being the only Celtics starter in double-figure scoring (10 points), the host Celtics defeated the Suns 87-79 on Jan. 9.

Phoenix has won two straight and five of six at home in this series.

Green scores 31 points as Celtics rout Suns 113-88

PHOENIX (AP) Jeff Green gave Boston a sensational performance in his first start in nearly two years.

Green scored a season-high 31 points on 11-of-14 shooting and the short-handed Celtics routed the Phoenix Suns 113-88 on Friday night.

"I didn't have a different mindset," said Green, who missed last season following heart surgery to correct an aortic aneurysm. "It was the same as me coming off the bench. I just tried to make a statement early and that's what I did by attacking the rim and getting to the free throw line."

Green started in place of 36-year-old Kevin Garnett, given a rest with Boston playing its third game in four nights.

"Jeff was phenomenal," Celtics coach Doc Rivers said. "We started the game running a set we had never run in our lives. We literally drew it up right before the game. They just had the basketball IQ to keep working and they actually showed us options we didn't know we had."

Chris Wilcox had 13 points off the bench, and Avery Bradley and Jason Terry scored 13 each for the Celtics, who moved two games ahead of Milwaukee for seventh place in the Eastern Conference.

"It's just a feel-good win," Rivers said.

Paul Pierce scored only eight on 3-of-5 shooting for his fourth single-digit game of the season. But that mattered little to the Celtics, who were dominant from the opening tip in snapping a two-game skid.

Jordan Crawford, acquired from Washington on Thursday, made his Celtics debut and scored 10 points off the bench as Boston improved to 9-3 without injured guard Rajon Rondo.

"I didn't get to sleep until around 4 and had to get up at 6:30, but it's all good," Crawford said. "They did a good job of welcoming me. They made it normal for me, just telling me to come out and play my game."

Goran Dragic had 18 points and 10 assists, Markieff Morris scored 11 and Marcin Gortat added 10 points and six rebounds for the Suns, who have lost two straight and six of seven.

"We're just playing bad, bad basketball," Gortat said. "We need training camp for a week at least. There was no defense, no rotations. They're just walking by us and taking the ball out of our hands."

Boston wasted no time grabbing control, taking advantage of Phoenix's 0-for-5 start from the floor and a pair of Suns turnovers to open a 13-0 lead less than 4 minutes into the game.

Suns coach Lindsey Hunter waited only 60 seconds before calling his first timeout. In the fourth quarter he had three point guards on the floor.

"Two dead layups? Yeah, I saw (the problems) real early," Hunter said. "A situation like tonight burns at my very being. That is totally unacceptable, coaching-wise and player-wise. That way we performed tonight? That cannot happen. People say you can't coach effort. I disagree because I am responsible and I feel like if I've got to coach effort then that's what I have to do.

"I guarantee you we're going to change or we're going to practice until they kick us out of the gym, because that puts a bad taste in my mouth. ... One of their Hall of Fame players didn't play and they still come in here and smack you around like a punching bag. You're at home and there is no resistance. That is just not who I am and that is not who this team will be. Whatever we have to do, whatever method, it will be done."

Phoenix slowly cut into the lead, but every time the Suns came close the Celtics ran their lead back to double digits.

The Suns' last run came in the first 2 minutes of the second half, a 7-0 streak capped by a 3-pointer from Dragic that cut Boston's 12-point halftime lead to 53-48. But the Celtics pulled away for good, opening a 74-59 lead on Terrence Williams' layup with 3:03 left in the third quarter.

Boston, which swept the season series against Phoenix for the first time since 2008-09, led by as many as 30 in the fourth quarter.

"This is one you just want to put behind you as fast as possible," Suns forward P.J. Tucker said.

NOTES: Boston won for the first time in eight road games against Western Conference teams. ... Suns C Hamed Haddadi, who came to Phoenix from Toronto with a second-round pick for Sebastian Telfair on Thursday, arrived midway through the first quarter but did not dress. ... Markieff and Marcus Morris became the second twin teammates in NBA history. The other set, Dick and Tom Van Arsdale, also played for the Suns and celebrated their 70th birthday on Friday. Marcus, traded from Houston on Thursday for a second-round pick, made his debut with 6:32 to play, joining Markieff on the floor for the first time since March 26, 2011, when they played for Kansas.

THE FACTS: The Phoenix Suns, with their disappointing season winding down, are experimenting with lineups and seldom-used players.

The Boston Celtics, their season taking a surprising turn after the season-ending injury to Rajon Rondo, are bearing down on a playoff spot.

So maybe Friday night's visit by the Celtics (29-26) to Arizona was predictable. They played with purpose in rolling to an easy 113-88 win over the disjointed Suns. The Celtics, 9-3 since the Rondo injury, burst out of the gate with a 16-3 lead and really never were challenged in the wire-to-wire win. The Suns got only as close as 53-48 early in the third quarter. The Celtics are two games ahead of the Milwaukee Bucks for the No. 8 and final playoff spot.

"It was a feel-good win," Celtics coach Doc Rivers said. He praised new players Jordan Crawford (10 points) and Terrence Williams (nine points), saying, "They played great."

Jeff Green led the Celtics with a season-high 31 points. "Jeff was phenomenal," Rivers said.

Goran Dragic led the Suns (18-38) with 19 points and 10 assists. The disappointed Suns coach Lindsey Hunter said of the lopsided loss, "A situation like tonight burns at my very being, That is totally unacceptable."

Green started in place of Kevin Garnett, who sat out to rest -- his first missed game this season. Garnett has appeared tired since the Celtics' 118-114 triple-overtime win over the Nuggets on Feb. 10, Rivers said. "He didn't put up a fight at all," Rivers said. "That shows you we probably were a game or two too late."

With Green starting, the Celtics used a small lineup that the firepower-challenged Suns couldn't match.

"We like to take advantage of mismatches," Green said. "With the small lineup and their starters, we were able to take advantage."

With a small lineup, there was no reason not to space the floor, so Rivers said he told his players, "'Stay away from each other.' Even in transition, you could see five guys running away from each other."

IN THE ARENA: The game had the feel of a neutral-court game early, then -- as the rout was on -- a Celtics' home game. All the Celtics' fans pushed the announced attendance to a sellout (18,422).

This was the Suns' first announced sellout since April 1, 2011 vs. the Clippers.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Wesley Johnson is being given a shot to play over Shannon Brown, the Suns' sixth man much of the past two seasons. Johnson had averaged 10.5 points the previous two games. But against the Celtics, he shot 1-for-4 for three points.

ROOKIE WATCH: Kendall Marshall would seem to have the Suns' backup point guard role alone now that Sebastian Telfair has been traded to Toronto. But coach Hunter said he has told the first round draft pick that he won't hesitate to play Diante Garrett if Marshall fails to do the job. Marshall generally has been viewed as a disappointment so far,

The Suns had both Marshall and Garrett on the floor in a three-guard lineup late in the game.

Marshall shot 1-for-7 for two points. Garrett was 0-for-3 for one point.

NOTABLE: Midway through the fourth quarter, Marcus Morris -- acquired from the Rockets for a second-rounder. joined his twin brother Markieff on the floor. This occurred while the Celtics were running up their lead to 30 points. Marcus, though, managed to hit a 3-pointer. The Suns now can claim the only two sets of twin teammates in the NBA. The first: Dick and Tom Van Arsdale, who played their final NBA season together for the Suns in 1976-77. They turned 70 years old Friday.

The Morris twins, though, don't have identical games. Hunter said he views Marcus as a "three" while Markieff will continue to be used as a big forward.
