Tony Parker carried his hot streak into the second half and has the San Antonio Spurs playing at a high level, but that hasn't been the case when he's faced Chris Paul and the Los Angeles Clippers.

Paul will try to build on his All-Star MVP performance for the Pacific Division leaders when two of the NBA's top point guards meet Thursday night in Los Angeles.

Parker, the Spurs' leading scorer with 21.0 points per game, is having one of his best stretches of the season, averaging 29.0 points and 9.0 assists in his last five games.

Aside from finishing with a season high-tying seven turnovers, Parker showed no signs of rust following the break with 30 points and 11 assists in a 108-102 victory at Sacramento on Tuesday.

"He picked up where he left off before the All-Star break," coach Gregg Popovich said. "He's having an unbelievable year. He just keeps doing it."

Parker, however, hasn't fared as well against the Clippers. He had a season-low four points on 2-of-7 shooting in a 106-84 loss at Staples Center on Nov. 7, and scored 11 in a 92-87 home defeat Nov. 19.

Parker also shot just 36.1 percent while averaging 17.3 points in the four-game sweep of the Clippers in the second round of last season's playoffs.

Paul scored 12.8 per game on 36.8 percent shooting in that series, but he's been playing well recently after missing nine straight games with a bruised right kneecap. He averaged 20.0 points while shooting 60.0 percent in his last four games before the break, and finished with 20 and 15 assists to win the All-Star MVP honors Sunday in Houston.

"It's something that I've never done," Paul told the team's official website following the Western Conference's 143-138 win. "It's something that I definitely didn't come into the game trying to achieve or think would even be possible."

Paul will try to bring that momentum into the second half, starting with this meeting between clubs with title aspirations. He led the way with 19 points and eight assists Nov. 19 to give the Clippers three straight regular-season wins in this series.

Los Angeles (39-17) rolled into the break with four consecutive victories by an average of 16.2 points, and it sits third in the West behind San Antonio (43-12) and Oklahoma City.

Blake Griffin has done most of his damage at home against the Spurs. The All-Star forward has averaged 24.8 points and 12.8 rebounds in the past five meetings in Los Angeles, including last postseason.

The Clippers are averaging 110.0 points while hitting 52.7 percent from the field during their four-game win streak. They'll also look to gain an advantage on the glass after outrebounding San Antonio 98-71 in the first two meetings.

With eight wins in their last nine away from home, the Spurs have the NBA's best road mark at 21-10. They've also won four straight and 15 of 16 overall en route to the league's top record.

Kawhi Leonard has given the Spurs a spark lately, averaging 15.8 points in his last eight games - 5.2 more than his season mark.

Spurs beat Clippers 116-90 for 5th straight win

LOS ANGELES (AP) The aging San Antonio Spurs came out of the All-Star break rested and raring to go.

They notched their second win since the break ended and fifth in a row, beating the Los Angeles Clippers 116-90 on Thursday night behind 31 points from Tony Parker.

"Tony's been a huge part of us playing that well. He's been the one who is most consistent," said Tim Duncan, who had nine points. "Everything kind of clicked together. We made a lot of shots. They just couldn't get their footing."

The Spurs led all the way in beating the Clippers for the first time this season and improving to an NBA-best 22-10 on the road, where they've also won five in a row.

"It was a complete butt-kicking from the start in every way you can count," Clippers coach and former Spurs player Vinny Del Negro said.

Parker had seven assists and no turnovers in 28 minutes and Danny Green added 15 points. The West-leading Spurs tied their season-best with 59-percent shooting, hit eight 3-pointers and made 22 of 28 free throws. They had lost both previous meetings with the Clippers in November.

"We're not that good and they're not that bad," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. "I think it's because we already played one. Too long of a layoff (for the Clippers)."

Matt Barnes scored 18 points, Blake Griffin had 17 and Jamal Crawford 15 as the Clippers' four-game winning streak ended in their first game after the break. Chris Paul, MVP in Houston last weekend with 20 points and 15 assists, was held to four points on 1-of-6 shooting and three assists.

"It's very humbling, but it happens," Griffin said. "There's going to be games where you feel like nothing's going your way, so we need to get back to what made us successful against San Antonio. We've got to have a good practice tomorrow, go over our mistakes and bounce back against Utah on Saturday."

The Clippers have lost their first game coming out of the break in nine of the last 10 years, including five in a row. They came in trailing the Spurs by 4 1/2 games for the best record in the NBA, but they never got a run going and their defense didn't do much. The biggest excitement during the game was generated by a fan who made a half-court shot during a timeout to win a new car.

"They just beat us, beat us bad," Paul said. "Luckily it wasn't a Game 7 or our last game of the season. They came out and executed. Tony was in a rocking chair all night. We just let him go wherever he wanted to, and we never really could get going offensively. It's a very humbling loss."

The Spurs led by 28 points to start the fourth quarter, when Parker and most of the other Spurs starters rested while fans hit the exits in droves. The Clippers equaled their worst loss of the season.

"It's only one game. It doesn't mean anything," Parker said. "You have to look at the big picture. We want to win a championship."

San Antonio put on a free-throw shooting clinic in the third quarter, making 16 of 20, including 12 during a 14-4 run that extended its lead to 81-53.

Popovich said he tried to call a couple plays, but Parker overrode him.

"He's really matured as a player," Popovich said. "He just used to be a scoring point guard. Now there's a whole new world out there. He's a complete player."

Parker said, "He's always trusting me and letting me grow as a point guard and calling plays. Before in my career I was always looking at him. Now I don't look at him."

The Spurs shot 63 percent to lead 58-43 at halftime. Parker scored 17 points in the half, while Griffin was the only Clipper in double figures with 13 points. Paul didn't make his first basket until the final 3 minutes of the second quarter.

San Antonio made its first six shots to start the game and used a 17-4 run, including seven by Manu Ginobili, to close out the first quarter leading 34-21.

NOTES: San Antonio improved to 6-1 on its nine-game rodeo trip. ... The Clippers dropped to 21-6 at home. ... Spurs F-G Stephen Jackson played for the first time since his wife had a miscarriage. He had left the team in Chicago on Feb. 11. ... THE FACTS: In a matchup of All-Star point guards, Tony Parker of the Spurs was a one-man show. Parker carved up the Clippers in front of their home crowd Thursday night, continuing a recent run that many consider the best of his 12-year career. He scored 31 points in a little under three quarters of work, dished out seven assists and did not turn the ball over in the 116-90 victory at Staples Center, showing L.A. that the Spurs should still be considered the team to beat in the Western Conference.

THE STAT: The Spurs matched their season high shooting percentage of 58.9 while improving to 6-1 on their current season-long nine-game road trip. They're 22-10 on the road overall this season for a league-best .687 winning percentage. The Spurs are guaranteed to have a winning road record for the 16th consecutive season, four seasons longer than the previous NBA record set by the Lakers from 1979-91.

TURNING POINT: The Spurs showed they meant business right from the start, making their first six field-goal attempts to surge to a 13-7 lead. The Clippers regrouped to tie the score but Manu Ginobili checked in for the Spurs and scored four straight points to spark a 12-0 run that put L.A. in a double-digit hole it never emerged from.

HOT: Few players look better than Parker these days. He came in averaging 26.6 points, 9.4 assists and shooting 59.4 from the field over the previous 10 games. Parker then went out and severely out-played fellow Western Conference All Star point guard Chris Paul. In the first half alone, Parker had 17 points and five assists while shooting 8-for-12 from the floor. Paul, on the other hand, had two points and three assists in the opening half. It was the 10th time this season Parker has scored at least 30 points. Only one other season has he produced more 30-point games (13 in 2008-09). He finished 12-for-16 from the floor for the game and drew three of the five fouls on Paul.

NOT: The starting backcourt for the Clippers combined to make one basket against the Spurs, hardly a method for success when up against a guard as hot as Parker. Paul shot 1-for-6 and scored four points in 27 minutes, the third time in his last seven games he has made just one field goal. He did mix in three games of 21 points or more, so he's been streakier with his shooting lately than erratic. Chauncey Billups, who combined for 40 points the previous two games while shooting 9-for-14 from 3-point range, missed his only two field-goal attempts and scored six points.

GOOD MOVE: The Clippers started strong in their two games prior to the All Star break. They scored 46 points in the opening quarter of a 106-96 victory against the visiting Rockets last week -- the highest-scoring quarter in the NBA this season -- then came back a day later and scored the game's first 15 points in a 125-101 win against the Lakers. The Spurs didn't let the Clippers get any momentum Thursday, blitzing the hosts almost from the opening tip.

BAD MOVE: The Clippers started the game by trying to apply pressure to Parker on the perimeter. He made them pay immediately, scoring or assisting on the first four baskets for the Spurs. L.A. had the ball to start the second half, but was promptly called for a 24-second violation. It all continued downhill from there.

NOTABLE: Spurs starting small forward Kawhi Leonard was held out because of lingering soreness in his left knee, an ailment that sidelined him for 18 games earlier this season. Popovich said the decision to sit Leonard was precautionary and he may play Friday in Golden State. ... Spurs backup swingman Stephen Jackson returned to the lineup after missing the last three games following the miscarriage of his 6 1/2-month old child, the San Antonio Express reported. Jackson finished with five points and matched his season high with three steals. ... The worst shooting game of the season for the Spurs (35.4) came against the Clippers in their last meeting Nov. 19 in San Antonio. ... A fan made a half-court shot during a third-quarter timeout, winning a new Dodge Dart.
