Though Andrew Bynum's return would surely help the Philadelphia 76ers in their quest to reach the playoffs, they appear to be plenty confident with or without him.

The Minnesota Timberwolves' postseason hopes have all but faded without the injured Kevin Love.

The road-challenged 76ers look to open the season's second half on a strong note Wednesday night against a Timberwolves team that has lost 16 of 19.

Ninth-place Philadelphia (22-29) entered the All-Star break having dropped three of four, including last Wednesday's 94-92 loss at Milwaukee. Evan Turner and Spencer Hawes combined for 39 points and Jrue Holiday added 16 and 12 assists as the 76ers wasted a chance to gain ground on the Bucks for eighth place in the Eastern Conference.

"This win would have felt great. It's very disappointing," guard Nick Young said. "You just try to do your best over the All-Star break to get over it."

While Bynum was at one point planning to return following the break, he's still roughly a week or two away from practicing due to knee troubles that have sidelined him since he was acquired from the Los Angeles Lakers last summer.

"I don't think anyone is more upset than myself," Bynum said. "I have the most to lose by not playing and I want to get back."

The 76ers would love to have him back sooner than later, but they know they can't afford to sit around and wait with a playoff spot at stake.

"I feel like if we're going to make the playoffs, we need to make that push now," said Holiday, Philadelphia's lone representative at last weekend's All-Star festivities. "I know once it gets closer to that time, that pressure kind of hits you, it's harder to buckle down.

"We need to get it done now, even though we still have a couple more injuries, this team that we have here, we're all fighters ... everybody's mentally right."

Philadelphia, which is expected to be without starting forward Thaddeus Young for a fifth straight game due to a pulled hamstring, is looking to avoid a season-worst seventh consecutive road defeat. The 76ers have been outscored by an average of 13.5 points during that skid and are 2-14 over their last 16 games in opposing arenas.

Sitting in 12th place in the West, the Timberwolves (19-31) have compiled a 4-17 record since Love broke his shooting hand for the second time.

While the two-time All-Star isn't likely to return until the middle of next month, Minnesota could get a boost from Andrei Kirilenko, who's expected to play following a five-game absence due to a quad injury.

"We expect to step up, now we've got AK back," center Nikola Pekovic told the team's official website. "I see signs that we can play against anybody. ... We just need to step up and finish games."

The Timberwolves concluded the first half with another close call last Wednesday, falling 97-93 to Utah. Derrick Williams had a season-high 24 points and career-best 16 rebounds as Minnesota shot a season-low 34.1 percent and was outscored 54-30 in the paint.

Ricky Rubio continued his impressive play, posting 18 points, 10 assists and a career-high nine rebounds. He is averaging 15.0 points and 10.0 assists over his last six games.

"We have to try to start winning more games," Rubio said.

Minnesota, which has taken nine of 11 in this series at home, cruised to a 105-88 win at Philadelphia on Dec. 4.

Pekovic powers Wolves over Philly 94-87

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) The Philadelphia 76ers came into Minnesota determined to get physical and muscle out a rare road victory.

They quickly found out that rough and tumble is just how Nikola Pekovic likes it.

Pekovic had 27 points and tied a career high with 18 rebounds to power the Timberwolves to a 94-87 victory over the 76ers on Wednesday night.

""If you play physical with Pek, you're in trouble because he hits the weight room," Wolves point guard Ricky Rubio said. "His arm is as big as my head."

Derrick Williams had 17 points and eight rebounds and Andrei Kirilenko added 15 points and five assists in his return from a thigh injury for the Timberwolves, who finally figured out how to close one out for their fourth win in the last 20 games.

Evan Turner scored 17 points and Jrue Holiday scored 16 after making his All-Star debut on Sunday for the 76ers, who couldn't come up with an answer for Pekovic in the paint in a game that featured 76 combined free throw attempts and 53 fouls. Philadelphia has lost seven straight road games and has won just six times away from home all season, the third fewest wins in the NBA.

"We played terribly," Philadelphia coach Doug Collins said. "I don't know what else to say. It was terrible. No energy, no life at all. It was terrible. I can't candy-coat it any more than that. The only thing we did in the second half was compete. We didn't play well, we just played harder."

The Timberwolves never trailed, thanks in large part to Pekovic bulldozing his way through the Sixers big men. He dominated Spencer Hawes and Lavoy Allen, throwing an array of jump hooks, baseline spins and dunks at a Philadelphia front line that wanted no part of the hulking Montenegrin.

"They were trying to battle me," Pekovic said. "But we got a few shots to go in the first quarter and gained confidence."

The Timberwolves led by as many as 19 points in the first half against a lifeless Sixers team that watched Holiday get into early foul trouble and Turner score just two points in the first 24 minutes. An exasperated Collins tried to send a message to start the second half, sending Kwame Brown and Damien Wilkins out in place of Hawes and Allen.

"He's a beast," Hawes said. "The way they run their system, they do a great job getting their people the ball where they want them to get the ball and if you take away one thing, they know how to exploit it."

Turner got going with 14 points in the third quarter and Philadelphia started to gradually chip away at the lead, pulling to 87-83 with 2:30 to play.

But Kirilenko held Turner to one point in the fourth quarter and Minnesota made its free throws down the stretch, overcoming a dreadful period of shooting in which the Wolves made one field goal. It was enough to beat the offensively inept Sixers, who missed 11 free throws to lose their third straight game.

Both teams have put together incredibly disappointing seasons to this point after starting with playoff aspirations. The Sixers made a trade for Andrew Bynum but have yet to get him in a game this season because of recurring knee issues. He said earlier this week that he still hoped to play this year, but he's still a week or two away from his first practice. By the time he gets back on the floor, the 76ers could be buried. They started the night four games behind Milwaukee for the eighth playoff spot in the muddled Eastern Conference.

The Sixers won't get any sympathy from the Timberwolves, who have played most of the season without Kevin Love (broken hand), Chase Budinger (knee) and Brandon Roy (knee) and have slogged through a multitude of other short-term injuries to fade from contention in the West. They staggered into the All-Star break with 16 losses in 19 games, a season of playing short-handed certainly catching up to them.

"We have a chance," Rubio said. "It's a small, small chance."

NOTES: Only Sacramento and Washington have fewer wins on the road than Philly. ... Wilkins finished with 13 points. ... Pekovic stayed in Minnesota for the All-Star break rather than seek out the sun and the sand as so many of his teammates did. He went ice fishing on a nearby lake, and Collins went up to him before the game and playfully asked him why he wasn't invited. "I went to Arizona instead," Collins said

THE FACTS: Even without Kevin Love, Minnesota's frontcourt was too much for Philadelphia as the Timberwolves defeated the 76ers 94-87 on Wednesday night. Minnesota center Nikola Pekovic led the way for Minnesota (20-31), scoring 27 and grabbing 18 rebounds (including seven offensive boards). Starting in Love's absence and playing much better recently, Derrick Williams had 17 points and eight rebounds. Philadelphia's front court of Spencer Hawes and Lavoy Allen couldn't even match Pekovic's output combined, as the pair went for 17 points and 14 rebounds total for the Sixers (22-30).

Minnesota started fast, scoring in the first six seconds on a half-court alley-oop from Ricky Rubio to Andrei Kirilenko, and they never looked back as they led from wire to wire. Philadelphia's Evan Turner got hot in the third quarter, scoring 14 of his 17 points and Minnesota struggled to make shots in the fourth quarter, making only a single field goal. It was only the second time in franchise history the Wolves have failed to make a pair of field goals in the fourth quarter. But their defensive pressure was sufficient to maintain their lead, as the 76ers never got within four points.

QUOTABLE: "[Nikola Pekovic] crushed us: 27 points and 18 rebounds. They get to the line 44 times. The keys to the game tonight were rebounding, points in the paint and free throws. They made 33 points at the free-throw line, they had 34 points in the paint and they outrebounded us by 12. ... We played terribly, I don't know what else to say. It was terrible. THE STAT: Minnesota crushed Philadelphia on the boards, especially in the first half. At halftime, Minnesota held a 35-15 rebounding edge. And they maintained that margin, outrebounding Philadelphia 62-42 for the game. Minnesota's frontcourt dominance was also on display in the number of times the got to the line. They shot a season high 44 free throws.

TURNING POINT: Philadelphia cut Minnesota's lead to four twice in the final three minutes of the game. But, both times, Minnesota's front court stepped up big. The first time, Pekovic got the ball down low and drew a foul and both free throws. The second time, he got a pair of offensive rebounds and eventually Rubio was able to draw a foul and get to the line. His made free throws gave Minnesota a six point lead with 24.1 seconds to play.

QUOTABLE II: "We played really well in the first half. We got off to a really slow start in the third quarter when it seemed like we couldn't get on track. But Pek[ovic] was terrific. It was a good win to start after the break."

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: With 17 points and eight rebounds tonight, Williams continues to shake his sophomore slump. He has averaged 16.0 points and 8.8 rebounds over his last five contests.

NOTABLE: With his six assists, Rubio passed the 500 assist mark for his career ... This is the third straight for the Wolves over Philadelphia and completes a season sweep for the first time since the 2006-07 season ...
