Rudy Gay was a big part of the Memphis Grizzlies' limited success over the past six-plus seasons, so it may not be much of a surprise that he's been key to the Toronto Raptors' recent improvement.

Gay will try to lead the Raptors to their longest winning streak in nearly four years Wednesday night when he faces the surging Grizzlies for the first time since being traded away three weeks ago.

Gay was drafted eighth overall by Memphis (34-18) in 2006, and the forward was seen as a possible cornerstone for the franchise. He did his part, averaging at least 18.9 points over the past five seasons while helping the Grizzlies reach the playoffs in each of the last two.

That was a big reason why it was a surprise when they shipped Gay off to Toronto - last in the Atlantic Division - in a six-player, three-team trade that returned Tayshaun Prince and Austin Daye from Detroit and fellow forward Ed Davis from the Raptors.

David and Daye are reserves, while Prince is averaging 9.4 points in seven games since the move.

Gay, meanwhile, has 21.1 points per game in eight games with the Raptors (22-32), winning five straight to match its season high set in December and six overall.

"We can hang out and stuff after the game and stuff like that, but we're all about business on the court," Gay said. "We're working on a streak right now. We're trying to win games. We don't have time for all the emotional stuff."

Gay and the Raptors returned to business Tuesday, emerging from the All-Star break to win 96-88 at Washington behind the star forward's 24 points, eight rebounds and three steals.

The Raptors are now seeking their first six-game winning streak since March 22-April 4, 2009. Having Gay on their side should be a big help since they've dropped seven of the last eight meetings with the Grizzlies, including three in a row at home.

Toronto fell 103-82 at Memphis on Nov. 28, and the Grizzlies - 5-3 since the trade - enter this meeting on a four-game winning streak.

They shook off some rust following the break to beat Detroit 105-91 on Tuesday. Memphis gave up 30 points in the opening quarter before allowing that many over the next two to take control of the game.

"We were a little rusty," swingman Tony Allen said after Memphis' first game in six days due to the break. "Once we got our composure we were able to do what we do best. We played great defense and pounded the ball inside."

It's been the Grizzlies' success offensively that has driven their winning streak, averaging 104.3 points on 52.2 percent from the floor - 41.8 from beyond the arc.

Mike Conley has been a big contributor, averaging 19.0 points on 55.6 percent from the field while going 6 for 11 from long range over the past three games. He hit that average against the Pistons while connecting on 8 of 11 field-goal attempts and sinking both 3s.

Prince will be seeking improvement after going 2 for 7 from the field to finish with four points in his first game in Detroit since the trade.

"I wish I would've played a little better," he said. "You always want to play well against your old team."

He hasn't played well in Toronto, averaging 9.4 points over the past five visits.

Randolph leads Grizzlies past Raptors 88-82

TORONTO (AP) Rudy Gay's reunion with the Memphis Grizzlies was the kind of intense, high-energy basketball game more commonly played in late May, not late February.

Zach Randolph had 17 points and 18 rebounds, Mike Conley scored 17 points and the Grizzlies won their fifth straight game Wednesday, beating Gay and the Toronto Raptors 88-82.

"Exciting basketball game," Grizzlies coach Lionel Hollins said. "There was a lot of emotion, there was a lot of intensity from both sides. It was really like a playoff game.

"It's a long season and there's a lot of games that are just hum-haw, but this here was a barn burner," Hollins added.

Much of that was due to the widely held desire to show who came out ahead in the Jan. 30, three-team trade that had the Grizzlies trade Gay to Toronto.

"There was a lot of emotion in this game," said Ed Davis, one of the two Raptors acquired in the deal. "A lot of people wanted this win on both sides."

In the end, Gay came up short as the Raptors had their five-game winning streak ended. Gay had 13 points and nine rebounds but struggled with his shooting, making just five of 15 attempts. He also had a game-high five turnovers.

"It's obviously a team I'm very familiar with and I know how scrappy they are," Gay said of the Grizzlies. "Tonight they were just a little scrappier than us."

Raptors coach Dwane Casey credited Memphis for keeping Gay in check with solid defense.

"They weren't going to let Rudy get going," Casey said. "They were double-teaming him on pick-and-rolls, sending help quickly. They made it tough on him. I felt for him because I knew he wanted to do well."

Conley said it was "weird" to face Gay as an opponent for the first time, but he found a way to enjoy it.

"We were talking trash back and forth to each other, just making the game fun," Conley said.

Tony Allen scored 12 points and Tayshaun Prince had 11 as the Grizzlies won for the eighth time in nine meetings with the Raptors and posted their fourth straight victory in Toronto.

Gay called Randolph "a monster on the boards," and Allen praised his All-Star teammate for his leadership.

"We'll go as far as he goes," Allen said. "I tell him that he's got to carry us and he knows that."

Alan Anderson scored 15 of his 19 points in the fourth quarter as the Raptors erased a nine-point deficit to tie the game, but couldn't take the lead.

Amir Johnson scored 16 points and Kyle Lowry had 12 for Toronto.

Back-to-back 3-pointers by Anderson brought the Raptors within four at 70-66 with 9:26 left, and he hit another at 8:02 to make it 73-71.

"Alan Anderson got ultra-hot," Hollins said. "He was en fuego. He brought them back into the basketball game."

Memphis responded with consecutive layups by Darrell Arthur and Quincy Pondexter, putting them up 77-71, but Anderson hit another 3 and was fouled by Randolph, converting the four-point play to make it 77-75 with 6:33 left.

No one scored again until 4:09, when Johnson tied it at 77-all on a driving layup.

Just over a minute later, Randolph restored the lead by making a pair of free throws. Conley stole the ball from Gay on the next possession and Randolph was fouled again, making one of two to put Memphis up 80-77 with 2:25 left.

After a missed shot by Gay, Conley made a 3 to increase the lead to six at 83-77.

Lowry gave the Raptors hope, cutting it to 85-82 on a four-point play with 20 seconds left. But Prince rebounded a missed free throw by Conley and Allen sealed it with a pair at the line.

"It was very much like a playoff game with the way the attitudes were and the emotions out there," Conley said. "Both sides played very hard and the crowd was into it. It was a big game."

The Grizzlies missed their first eight field goal attempts of the game, but it was Toronto who struggled most with its shooting in the opening quarter, making just four of 20 shots. Gay missed all four of his attempts in the first against his former team as Memphis led 19-14 after one.

Randolph had six points in the second and Jerryd Bayless and Prince added five each as Memphis took a 43-32 lead after two. The half ended with a frustrated DeMar DeRozan hurling the ball skyward, only to have it get stuck inside the scoreboard hanging over center court.

Johnson had 10 points in the third, including an emphatic dunk over Randolph, and Gay added seven for the Raptors, but Conley scored six points for the Grizzlies and Memphis took a 66-57 lead into the final quarter.

NOTES: Both teams are 6-3 since the Jan. 30 trade. ... Toronto matched a season-low for first-quarter points. The Raptors also had 14 in a Feb. 13 win at New York. ... Casey said he would like to add a third point guard before Thursday's trade deadline.

Notebook: Grizzlies 88, Raptors 82

THE FACTS: The Memphis Grizzlies (35-18) won their fifth game in a row with a tough grind house 88-82 win over the Toronto Raptors (22-33). The win was their first time facing former teammate Rudy Gay since he was traded to Toronto three weeks ago. Memphis was paced by Zach Randolph's 17 points and 17 rebounds. Mike Conley added 16 points, six rebounds and six assists, while Tony Allen chipped in 12 points and eight rebounds.

The first half was a measure of futility and defense, as the Grizzlies led the Raptors 43-32, while the teams were shooting .349 and .257 percent, respectively. The third continued much along the same lines with Memphis extending its lead to a game-high 13 points in the quarter for a 66-57 lead. However, the Raptors went on a 17-7 run in the fourth quarter to tie the game 77-77, behind Alan Anderson's 14 points, shooting 4-for-4 from beyond the arc during that stretch.

The Air Canada Centre had a distinct playoff feel, but the Grizzlies took the air out of Toronto's sails with Conley's 3-point basket with 1:57 left, making it 83-77. Anderson's 19 points off the bench was a game high, while Amir Johnson added 16 points. Gay scored 13 points and nine rebounds and Kyle Lowry chipped in 12. With both teams coming off back-to-back games, it wasn't pretty, while the Raptors' defense is improved; this is the type of game the Grizzlies are built for.

QUOTABLE: "It's an emotional game, he wanted to come out, and wanted to play good, wanted to win. But so do we, we want to find our identity and keep on pushing and getting better."

THE STAT: Second-chance points went in favor of the victor. The Grizzlies didn't quit on possessions and outworking the Raptors 20-9 in that regard was the difference and helped them maintain momentum.

TURNING POINT: Despite the Grizzlies holding a commanding lead for much of the game, it wasn't until less than two minutes left when the game was decided. Conley 's 3-point shot with 1:57 left put Memphis up 83-77 and closed the door on any Raptors comeback, after they rallied to tie the game at 77.

QUOTABLE II: "It's our bread and butter, we're a grinding team and I think we hang our hats on the defensive end. Whenever we do that we're effective."

HOT: Anderson scored 14 points in the fourth quarter to key a 17-7 run, to tie the game at 77-77 in the fourth, including shooting 4-for-4 from the 3-point line. He single-handedly got his team back in the game.

NOT: The first quarter for both teams was an offensive struggle. The Raptors shot 4-for-20 from the field, (.200 percent), while the Grizzlies went 7-for-23 (.304 percent) for a 19-14 score for the quarter.

BAD MOVE: Shortly after Gay arrived in Toronto he professed that DeMar DeRozan was the best shooting guard he ever played with. Allen took offense and used that to motivate him, shutting down DeRozan to just 1-for-9 shooting and seven points in the game.
