Pistons-Bobcats Preview

The Detroit Pistons had their longest winning streak of the season snapped by the Charlotte Bobcats last month.

The Pistons are hoping for a better result - and their first set of back-to-back road wins in nearly 11 months - on Wednesday night when they face the league-worst Bobcats in Charlotte.

After winning the previous five games in this series by an average of 14.0 points, Detroit (21-34) lost 108-101 in overtime on Jan. 6. The Pistons were going for their first five-game overall winning streak run since Dec. 4-12, 2009.

Detroit, 6-18 on the road, last won two straight outside Auburn Hills on March 26 and 28.

The Pistons will try to change that after finishing a 1-2 homestand with Tuesday's 105-91 loss to Memphis in its first game out of the All-Star break.

"It was a very, very disappointing effort, other than the initial start (leading 30-22 after 12 minutes)," coach Lawrence Frank said.

The Bobcats (13-40), meanwhile, are looking to build off a 105-92 victory at Orlando on Tuesday in their first game of the second half. Charlotte scored a season-best 63 first-half points and has now won two of three after dropping 15 of 17.

"We're getting traction," said coach Mike Dunlap, whose team last had two consecutive victories on Nov. 19 and 21. "It proves that all the close games that we have played, some won, some lost, (and) we're improving still. And our young guys, you can see how much they're improving."

Charlotte 7-footer Byron Mullens is playing some of the best ball of his career following a 19-game absence with a sprained left ankle. He is averaging 18.1 points and 9.1 rebounds in the last seven contests after totaling 20 and 12 on Tuesday.

"I told the guys earlier today that there are 30 games left and we could still make the playoffs," Mullens said. "We can all put our heads down and just ride it out, or we can just fight for it."

The Bobcats open their three-game homestand with two victories in their last three at Time Warner Cable Arena. Charlotte had dropped its previous 16 as the home team, three shy of tying an NBA mark.

Pistons center Greg Monroe was two games shy of matching the team's longest double-double streak (10) in 17 seasons, but he finished with nine points and six rebounds on Tuesday. Starting a new streak could be a challenge as he'll face Bismack Biyombo, who grabbed a career-best 17 boards last month at Detroit.

Jose Calderon will face the Bobcats for the first time in a Pistons uniform. The Spanish point guard, who totaled 22 points and 10 assists in two games against Charlotte earlier this season while with Toronto, is averaging 14.3 points and 7.0 assists in seven games since being acquired by Detroit.

Bobcats point guard Kemba Walker, the team leader with 17.3 points per game and 5.6 assists, finished with 20 points and seven assists in last month's win and forced overtime with a layup with 7.8 seconds left in regulation. Walker and Tyrus Thomas combined for 10 of the team's 12 overtime points as Charlotte won its first game in this series since Feb. 2, 2011, at Detroit.

The Pistons have won three in a row at Charlotte.

Monroe, Knight lead Pistons over Bobcats 105-99

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) Brandon Knight carried the Detroit Pistons for three quarters, then watched as Greg Monroe and Jose Calderon closed it out.

Knight had 21 points before hyperextending his right knee late in the third quarter with the Pistons up by three.

Monroe stepped up and delivered, scoring 10 of his 19 points in the fourth quarter as the Pistons earned a much-needed 105-99 win over the Charlotte Bobcats on Wednesday night.

"He had his momentum going down the stretch," said Bobcats guard Ramon Sessions. "It's tough to stop a player like him when he's playing the way he did."

Calderon finished with 17 points, including two key free throws to seal the game with 21 seconds left.

Monroe and Calderon accounted for Detroit's final 15 points.

The Bobcats are now 20-100 since the start of the 2011-12 season.

The Pistons led 77-74 with 1:45 left in the third quarter when Knight was tripped up by Bobcats point guard Kemba Walker after Walker lost control of the ball in the lane. Walker was called for a foul and Knight remained on the court for several minutes before getting up and gingerly walking to the bench.

Knight would return briefly in the fourth quarter for one possession before injuring his ankle because he was overcompensating for his injured knee.

At that point, Knight walked to the bench with a noticeable limp and did not return.

Knight said he wanted to continue. He's uncertain if he'll play Friday night at Indiana.

"You've got to listen to your body sometimes, but as a competitor when your team is in a close game, you always want to play, especially when you have an opportunity to put a team away," Knight said. "As long as we won, I'm happy. That's what I'm most happy about."

The Pistons can thank Monroe for that.

The second-year center muscled his way into the lane for some key baskets late in the game against the less physical Bobcats.

"We all stepped and played well tonight," Monroe said. "We got into attack mode tonight. They drew up some plays for me in the post tonight. I just tried to make the right decision and took advantage of some one-on-one action and was able to make some plays at the rim."

Walker led all scorers with 24 points but had five turnovers.

Sessions had 18 points and eight assists off the bench for the Bobcats and Byron Mullens added 15 points.

The Bobcats cut the Pistons' 11-point lead to one late in the fourth quarter before Monroe scored on a spin move inside. Calderon put away the game with a pair of free throws with 21 seconds left after Mullens missed a jumper and Walker turned the ball over at the top of the key.

The Pistons were coming off a 14-point loss to the Memphis Grizzlies on Tuesday night, a defeat that coach Lawrence Frank called "a real stinker."

He felt better about this one, calling it a "gritty win."

"It was a good result," Frank said. "We got off to a good start, which always helps. We executed well down the stretch. Showing our execution down the stretch. Our patience, our poise and playing through a little bit of adversity."

The Bobcats entered the fourth quarter down 78-77 but the Pistons quickly built a double-digit lead after Kyle Singler scored off an offensive rebound with seven minutes left in the game.

The Bobcats clawed back behind a pair of 3-pointers from Mullens and two nasty dunks by rookie Michael Kidd-Gilchrist but couldn't seize the lead.

Charlotte dropped to 7-20 at home and 13-41 overall.

"Our biggest problem was defensively, we weren't able to get stops," Walker said. "We missed a lot of rotations and weren't talking to each other. We weren't in sync tonight. We've got to get that back."

Detroit hasn't looked sharp on the road, carrying a 6-18 record into the game. But the Pistons looked good early, jumping out to an 11-point first-quarter lead behind 11 points from Knight and three 3-pointers from Calderon.

Rodney Stuckey added 12 points and tied a season-high with seven rebounds off the bench for the Pistons.

NOTES: Carolina Panthers wide receiver Steve Smith took in Wednesday night's game. ... Tyrus Thomas, one of Charlotte's highest-paid players, was inactive for the fourth straight game. ... THE FACTS: Greg Monroe scored 10 of his 19 points in the fourth quarter as the Detroit Pistons defeated the Charlotte Bobcats 105-99 Wednesday night at Time Warner Cable Arena. THE STAT: Detroit picked up consecutive road victories for the first time since March 26-28 of last season. The Pistons won at Milwaukee 105-100 on February 9 and tonight in Charlotte. The Bobcats are now 20-100 since the start of the 2011-12 season.

TURNING POINT: Rodney Stuckey had back-to-back three-point play opportunities for the Pistons early in the fourth quarter. Stuckey ended up with five points and took the Pistons from an 81-77 lead to an 86-77 lead. The energy he brought helped lift the Pistons past the loss of Brandon Knight to a knee injury and helped the Pistons never relinquish the lead in the final quarter.

HOT: Charlotte guard Kemba Walker has had back-to-back 24-point outings. Walker had 24 points, seven assists, four rebounds and three steals Tuesday night in Orlando and finished with a 24 point, three assist, four rebound, and two block night Wednesday against Detroit.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Jose Calderon has averaged 14.6 points and 6.4 assists in eight games with the Pistons. Against Charlotte, Calderon had 17 points and was a perfect 4-for-4 from behind the arc and made 5-for-6 from the free-throw line in leading the Pistons to victory.

INSIDE THE ARENA: NBA great and former Charlotte Hornet player Robert Parrish was in attendance. The Bobcats got into the "Harlem Shake" craze with its own version of the dance led by Rufus Lynx and several other local mascots including Chubby Checker of the American Hockey League's Charlotte Checkers and mascots from Queens University and UNC Charlotte.

ROOKIE WATCH: Michel Kidd-Gilchrist finished the night with 11 points, six rebounds, three assists and three blocked shots. Detroit saw two of its five rookies play Wednesday night. Viacheslav Kravtsov had six points and four rebounds in 13 minutes of play while Kyle Singler got the start and contributed eight points and three rebounds before fouling out after 23 minutes on the court.

NOTABLE: Ramon Sessions scored 18 points and was in double figures for the 12th time in the last 13 games. Gerald Henderson scored in double figures for the ninth straight game and had a season-high tying five assists. Byron Mullens scored in double figures for the eighth straight game since returning to the lineup on February 4. Detroit's Brandon Knight scored 21 points for his 15th game of 20-plus points this season. Monroe scored in double figures for the 47th time this season and added a career-high tying three blocks. Stuckey was in double figures for the 29th time this season and had a season-best seven rebounds.
