Suns-Trail Blazers Preview

Few teams may have been looking forward to the All-Star Break more than the Portland Trail Blazers and Phoenix Suns. Both will try to break out of losing streaks Tuesday night as Portland hosts Phoenix.

The Suns are trying to thwart their fourth losing streak of four or more games, while the Trail Blazers look to avoid matching a season-high six-game skid. Each team won at home in two earlier meetings this season, and Portland has won the past seven matchups at the Rose Garden - its longest active home streak against any franchise.

The Blazers (25-28) lost five in a row to end a six-game road trip prior to the break and the finale was particularly bad, falling 99-63 at New Orleans on Wednesday. The point total and field-goal percentage (32.8) were easily the worst of the season for a Portland team which had been operating efficiently, averaging 102.5 points and shooting 49.9 percent in the previous six games.

An already bottom-third defense, though, continues to be exploited. The Blazers are allowing 109.8 points on 52.3 percent shooting - including 43.5 percent from 3-point range - over the last five games.

"It's a rough way to go into the All-Star break, losing five games in a row with a big loss, so we just need to get back on track," Nicolas Batum said.

Batum is averaging 15.3 points but has been mired in a slump, scoring nine or fewer in four of the last six games. Having Batum right himself could be especially crucial if Wesley Matthews is out for an extended period after spraining his right ankle in the first quarter Wednesday. Matthews, averaging 14.8 points and a team-high 1.4 steals, didn't return and is listed as questionable for Tuesday's game.

The Suns (17-36) have the worst record in the Western Conference and their 5-23 mark on the road is tied for the league's worst. While Portland's defense has struggled of late, Phoenix's offense has slowed to a crawl, averaging 83.5 points during the current four-game slide - down from 94.7 on the season.

Sloppy play has plagued the Suns, who have averaged 19.0 turnovers over the last four games. Goran Dragic has 15 turnovers in that span while shooting 37.8 percent.

Finishing games well is another area that continues to hurt the Suns. In their most recent game, they outscored the Lakers 24-9 in the third quarter last Tuesday but fell apart in the fourth to lose 91-85. Phoenix averages 21.9 points on 41.1 percent shooting in the fourth, with both being its lowest for any period.

"It's just the story of our team this season," swingman P.J. Tucker said. "Just not being able to close the game out and being able to be in a position to win the game. It's just something we have to keep trying to get better at."

Phoenix may look to Marcin Gortat after solid performances in the first two meetings when he averaged 20.0 points on 76.9 percent shooting.

Perhaps the Blazers can harness some positive vibes from Damian Lillard after the rookie's Skills Competition victory Saturday - or at least another good game from him against the Suns. Lillard averaged 24.5 points while shooting 53.8 percent in the two previous matchups.

Suns hold off Blazers 102-98

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) Goran Dragic got right to the point after dishing a career-high 18 assists against Portland.

"It was really fun," said a smiling Dragic, who also had 16 points in the Suns' 102-98 victory over the Trail Blazers Tuesday night. "I would like to thank all my teammates - they were hitting shots."

The win snapped a four-game losing streak for the Suns.

"I think he was aggressive as he always is, and he made plays," Suns coach Lindsey Hunter said of Dragic's career night. "It was amazing but it was fun to watch because everybody was getting involved."

Wesley Johnson came off the bench to score a season-high 14 points for the Suns, who opened the game with a 12-0 run and led by as many as 19 points before holding off a late Portland rally.

J.J. Hickson had 25 points and 16 rebounds for his 28th double-double of the season for the Blazers, who lost their sixth straight to match their season-high.

The Blazers pulled to within 96-92 on rookie Damian Lillard's 3-pointer with 3:57 left in the game. Marcin Gortat's dunk and Luis Scola's layup slowed the rally, but Nicolas Batum made a 3-pointer to close the Blazers within 100-95 with 2:35 to go.

Nolan Smith made a free throw and LaMarcus Aldridge added two more with 20.5 seconds left to make it 100-98. After Dragic made a pair of free throws for the Suns, Lillard's 3-point attempt fell short as time wound down.

"Like we always do, we made it a game down the stretch," said Lillard, the reigning rookie of the month who finished with 24 points. "We just couldn't catch them."

Portland was without starting shooting guard Wesley Matthews because of a sprained left ankle and elbow that he hurt in the first quarter of Portland's 99-63 loss to New Orleans just before the All-Star break. That loss capped a six-game Portland road trip, which started with a victory at Minnesota but concluded with five-straight losses. The Blazers hadn't played at home since Feb. 2.

Blazers coach Terry Stotts said he didn't want to use Matthews' absence as an excuse.

"Obviously, Wes is a very important part of the team, but I think we showed that we can still compete without him," Stotts said. "If he's not in there, everybody has to step up a bit."

The Suns (18-36) lost to the Lakers at Staples Center 91-85 last Wednesday. Phoenix is a league-worst 6-23 on the road this season.

It was the first of a back-to-back for Phoenix, which visits the Golden State Warriors on Wednesday as trade rumors continue to swirl around the team. Coach Lindsey Hunter said before the game that his focus is on the Suns, which has the worst record in the Western Conference.

"I'm sure if something gets serious, I'll know about it," he said. The trade deadline is Thursday.

Last season at the deadline the Blazers fired coach Nate McMillan and traded away both Gerald Wallace and Marcus Camby. This season most trade talk is about Hickson, who must agree to any deal.

The Suns jumped out to a 12-0 lead to start the game, led by Scola with six points. Portland did not score until Hickson's jumper with 7:17 left in the first quarter. The Blazers were playing catch-up the rest of the way, and trailed 36-23 at the end of the quarter.

The Suns extended the lead to 40-25 on Johnson's 16-foot-jumper and led 63-47 at the half.

Phoenix went up 71-56 on Jared Dudley's long jumper, but the Blazers pulled within 71-63 on Aldridge's bank shot. Portland couldn't get closer than eight points and trailed 84-73 to open the fourth quarter.

Portland pulled to with 96-89 on Aldridge's layup and freer throw before Lillard's 3-pointer.

"We played well, especially the first two quarters and then they played better defense," Dragic said. "We were struggling a bit, especially in the fourth quarter. In the last three or four minutes we couldn't get a clean shot, but we fought until the end. It was a great win for us."

Notes: Portland had won the last seven games against the Suns at the Rose Garden.... Hickson's 28 double-doubles match his career high for a season. ... Baltimore Ravens tight end and former Oregon Duck Ed Dickson was at the game and even threw T-shirts into the crowd during a timeout. ... Dragic has six games this season with double-digit assists. ... Blazers owner Paul Allen, on the passing of Lakers owner Jerry Buss, said: "At a time when professional basketball needed an infusion of new thinking and vision, Dr. Buss stepped forward in ways that truly redefined our game on and off the court." Buss died on Monday.

THE FACTS: Goran Dragic scored 16 points ? including a pair of free throws with 13.5 seconds remaining ? and dished out a career-high 18 assists as Phoenix held off a late Portland rally to win 102-98 Tuesday night at the Rose Garden.

The Suns (18-36) jumped in front 12-0, shot 60 percent from the field in the first half and never trailed in snapping a four-game losing streak.

Luis Scola added 18 points and Jermaine O'Neal came off the bench for nine points and 13 rebounds for the Suns, who possess the worst record in the Western Conference.

J.J. Hickson had 25 points and 16 rebounds and Damian Lillard contributed 24 points and seven assists for Portland (25-29), which extended its losing streak to six games.

QUOTABLE: "A great team effort tonight. Guys played the right way and shared the ball, and that's the side effects we want to have from all the work we've put in."

THE STAT: Phoenix used its interior advantage to win the boards 51-37 and points in the paint 40-34.

TURNING POINT: The first 4:43 of the game. It took that long for Portland to get its first basket. By that time, Phoenix was in front 12-0, and the Suns never trailed.

QUOTABLE II: "We've been doing this to ourselves all season. Now there's a stretch coming up where we have to figure it out how to put full games together. When a team is playing as well as [the Suns] were tonight, we don't have room to spot them 12 points. We have to get something going fast, because we're running out of time."

HOT: The Suns were scorching the nets early, making 16-for-22 from the field in racing to a 36-23 advantage after one quarter.

NOT: Portland started 0-for-8 from the field and never really caught fire, finishing at .413 from the field and .300 from 3-point range.

GOOD MOVE: The Suns had the ball in the hands of Dragic "99.9 percent of the time," as Hunter overstated. The result was a career night.

BAD MOVE: With starting shooting guard Wesley Matthews [ankle] missing, Portland coach Terry Stotts used reserve Nolan Smith the entire fourth quarter. Smith had four rebounds and played some good defense in his 17 minutes, but was 0 for 4 from the field and scored only one point.

NOTABLE: Phoenix's scored the most points in the first quarter and in the first half of any Portland opponent all season. ... Dragic had 16 assists through three quarters. His previous career high for a game was 14 ... Phoenix centers Marcin Gortat and O'Neil are a combined 41 for 58 shooting in three games against Portland this season ... the Suns snapped a seven-game losing streak in Portland. It was their first win there since March 2008. ... Hickson is fourth in the NBA in double-doubles with 28. The Portland center was 10 for 14 from the field and has shot 50 percent or better in a franchise-record 17 straight games.
