Trail Blazers-Hornets Preview

The Portland Trail Blazers haven't been able to stop anybody lately, something they'll need to fix quickly if they hope to stay in the Western Conference playoff picture.

Stopping their current losing streak may not be easy against a New Orleans Hornets team that hopes to build on its recent success.

The Blazers will try to get back on track with their sixth straight win over the Hornets on Wednesday night when they wrap up a long road swing.

Following a season-worst six-game losing streak, Portland (25-27) appeared to be headed in the right direction with five wins in its next seven contests.

The Blazers, however, have followed that up with four straight road losses, the latest a 117-104 defeat in Miami on Tuesday as the Heat closed on a 16-2 run. As a result, Portland has fallen further behind eighth-place Houston in the West standings.

"I thought it was a good effort by our team," Blazers coach Terry Stotts said. "Miami's one of the best if not the best team in the league right now and they are playing at a high level. We matched it for about 44 minutes."

Damian Lillard bounced back from his worst performance as a pro - a 1-of-16 shooting, four-point effort in Orlando on Sunday - with 33 points, but Portland continues to have defensive problems. The Blazers have allowed an average of 112.5 points on 53.6 percent shooting - including 43.8 percent from 3-point range - during their skid.

The Blazers also allow an NBA-worst 45.7 points in the paint per game. That's likely to be an area of concern against a New Orleans team that's averaging 45.0 points in the lane this month.

The Hornets held a 46-36 advantage inside on Dec. 16, but Portland escaped with a 95-94 home win on Lillard's game-winning 3-pointer with 0.3 seconds left.

After playing eight of nine on the road, Monty Williams' club hopes to take advantage of a stretch with nine of its next 12 in New Orleans. The Hornets have bounced back from a four-game losing streak to win three of four after beating Detroit 105-86 on Monday.

"We wanted to finish this road trip well, and I think we showed some growth in our team," forward Al-Farouq Aminu said.

Robin Lopez has played a key role, averaging 19.7 points on 63.2 percent shooting in his last three games. Ryan Anderson had 31 points against the Pistons, and has made 30 of 65 (46.2 percent) from 3-point range in his last nine.

Anderson was 7 of 10 from long distance on the way to 26 points in the first meeting, while Greivis Vasquez had 23 points, 11 assists and eight rebounds.

J.J. Hickson had 24 points and 16 rebounds for Portland in that contest, but has averaged 10.0 points over his last five games. LaMarcus Aldridge, though, has scored 27.4 per game on 60.2 percent shooting in that stretch.

Portland has averaged 102.5 points in its last five games and should be able to find open looks against New Orleans, which has allowed 101.9 points per game over its last 13.

The Hornets have won five of seven at home, while the Blazers have lost eight of nine on the road.

Hornets roll past Trail Blazers, 99-63

NEW ORLEANS (AP) Anthony Davis stormed down the lane, soared over a cluster of players under the basket, snagged a missed layup as it bounced off the front rim and slammed it down.

With that, the worst scoring slump the Hornets' celebrated rookie could ever recall at any level of basketball ended.

Davis had 21 points and 11 rebounds, and the New Orleans Hornets handed the Portland Trail Blazers their fifth straight loss, 99-63 on Wednesday night.

"When you see the ball go through - a free throw, jump shot, layup, dunk, whatever it is - the confidence just builds back up," Davis said. "When I got that first dunk, the confidence was rising and I just tried to keep feeding on it."

Davis, whose 0-for-7 shooting night on Monday in Detroit made him 1 of 13 in his previous two games, was 10 of 17 against Portland. He scored on an array of dunks, tip-shots and even jumpers from as deep as 20 feet.

For Davis, it seemed like a just result after he went to the practice gym on Tuesday - while the rest of the team was given the day off - and worked on his shooting.

"I was trying to keep my mind right," said Davis, who's been selected to play in an exhibition game involving top young players during this weekend's NBA All-Star festivities in Houston. "I wasn't going to take the day off."

Ryan Anderson added 14 points and Jason Smith 13, both in reserve roles. Greivis Vasquez had 10 points and eight assists.

Damian Lillard had 12 points and Victor Claver 11 for Portland, which lost starting guard Wesley Matthews to a sprained right ankle early in the game and played poorly throughout, shooting 32.4 percent (24 of 74) and turning the ball over 18 times.

"It is embarrassing - one of the most embarrassing nights of the year," Portland forward Nicolas Batum said. "It's a rough way to go into the All-Star break, losing five games in a row with a big loss, so we just need to get back on track" next week.

New Orleans, whose record was once as bad as 5-22, heads into the All-Star break having won four of five and 14 of its last 26 games.

"I've seen a lot of growth from a lot of our guys," Hornets coach Monty Williams said.

But while the Hornets (19-34) would have to win 22 of their last 29 games just to finish at .500, the Trail Blazers (25-28), are still in contention to snag one of the last playoff spots in the Western Conference, if they can quickly figure out what's wrong.

"We are still not out of it by any means" Matthews said. "To be injured in the first minute-and-a-half and not be able to fight with my team was tough."

The Hornets led by 12 at halftime and took total control in the second half, when they outshot Portland 56.8 percent (25 of 44) to 34.2 percent (13 of 38) and outscored the Blazers 61-37.

The Hornets also outrebounded Portland 26-14 during the final two periods on their way to a lead as large as 39 points.

By the fourth quarter, the only drama concerned whether New Orleans would reach 100, a mark at which fans could get free french fries. But reserve Lance Thomas missed a free throw with 11.6 seconds left and was roundly booed. The Hornets regained possession once more in the final seconds and Brian Roberts ran out the clock in the back court with a bemused expression on his face as more boos rained down.

Afterward, Thomas wrote on his Twitter page that he would be at a downtown fast-food restaurant for an hour on Thursday night to buy fries for anyone with a ticket stub.

"I was wondering why everybody was so hyped with me shooting free throws when we're up by 30, but when I choked, I looked up (at the scoreboard) and I went, `Aw, free french fries,"' Thomas said.

Portland's hopes of ending its recent skid took an early hit when Matthews, who averages 15.2 points per game, collided with Austin Rivers, hurting his ankle as he fell awkwardly.

The way the Blazers were shooting, they could ill afford to lose him.

Portland shot 30.6 percent (11 of 36) in the opening half and turned the ball over 11 times.

That allowed the Hornets to build a double-digit lead even as they shot only 37.2 percent (16 of 43).

New Orleans opened the second quarter with an 11-2 run that included a pair of jumpers by Smith and Darius Miller's 3. Davis closed the run with a dunk and a tip-in, putting the Hornets up 30-16 and the lead was 38-26 at halftime.

Notes: Aldridge, who came in averaging a team-leading 21.2 points, was 2 of 11 shooting and finished with 6 points. ... Anderson hit a 3-pointer for the 10th straight game, which also gave him at least one from long range in 50 of 53 games this season. ... Hornets G Eric Gordon, the team's second-leading scorer, was ruled out shortly before tipoff after spraining his right hand earlier in the day during shoot around, according to a team official. Gordon has missed 35 of 53 games this season, mostly because of a right knee injury. ... Portland had won five straight against the Hornets coming in.

THE FACTS: New Orleans Hornets rookie Anthony Davis scored 21 points and pulled down 11 rebounds to pace the home team to a 99-63 win over the Portland Trail Blazers. The 36-point win was the largest of the season for the Hornets, who improved to 19-34 but won four of five before the All Star break.

Portland (25-28), meanwhile, hits the midseason break losing five of six, all on the road.

The Hornets were buoyed by their bench, which outscored Portland's 45-32, including 14 points from sixth man Ryan Anderson and another 13 from Jason Smith.

For all intents and purposes, the game was in New Orleans' control from the outset and was all but finished in the first four minutes of the second quarter. The Hornets trailed for only 1:07 before Greivis Vasquez tied it at 2-2 with a driving layup. The game was tied again at 4-4 and then New Orleans took over, slowly building a five-point lead by the end of the first quarter and a 12-point lead by halftime. Once Darius Miller drained a 3-pointer with 8:06 to go in the first half, the Hornets never led by fewer than 10 points the rest of the game.

New Orleans held Portland to just 32.4 percent shooting and outscored the Trail Blazers by 26 in the paint. Portland's Damian Lillard, in the running for rookie of the year, was held to only 12 points on 4-for-15 shooting.

THE STAT: 18 -- Portland's focus appeared off Wednesday night and it showed the most in how it handled the ball. The Trail Blazers turned the ball over 18 times, which the Hornets turned into 20 points. What didn't help Portland was that it also couldn't force any turnovers, coaxing the Hornets into just seven giveaways.

TURNING POINT: Less than two minutes into the first quarter, Portland's Wesley Matthews went down with a left ankle sprain. He didn't return and as such, the Trail Blazers missed out on his average of 15.2 points, 2.9 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game.

QUOTABLE II: "I didn't realize what I was shooting for until I missed it. And then I realized, oh, that's why. I was like, what are they booing me for? And then I realized French fries. We only had 98 points."
-- Hornets forward Lance Thomas, who was booed after missing the first of two free throws with the team sitting on 98 points. McDonald's runs a deal where if the Hornets get 100 points, those attending the game get a free small fries.

HOT: New Orleans' Davis was just 5-for-24 in the three games prior to Wednesday night. Against Portland, he broke out of his slump in a big way. The rookie big man went 10-for-17, scoring 21 points, his most since scoring 18 on Feb. 2. He also added 11 rebounds giving him his ninth double-double of the season.

NOT: Portland's outside game was nearly non-existent and that played into the big loss. The Trail Blazers were just 2-for-17, or 11.8 percent, from beyond the arc, way below their 34 percent season average.

NOTABLE: The Hornets held the Trail Blazers to a season-low 63 points, 14 below the previous mark for a New Orleans opponent. ... Portland's LaMarcus Aldridge scored only six points, far below his 21.2 per game average prior to Wednesday night. ... Portland's 26 first-half points were a season-low for a Hornets opponent. ... The Trail Blazers shot just 30.6 percent in the first half.
