Rockets-Clippers Preview

Seemingly healthy, Chris Paul is again making a major impact for the Los Angeles Clippers, but they didn't seem to miss him against the Houston Rockets last month.

This time, it's the Rockets that could be without their top guard.

Paul looks to stay hot Wednesday night and lift the Pacific Division leaders to a fifth straight victory over a Houston team that might be without James Harden.

Paul missed 12 of 14 games with a bruised right kneecap, and Los Angeles (37-17) split those contests. The Clippers withstood his absence in impressive fashion at Houston on Jan. 15, shooting 53.8 percent from the floor - and 11 of 19 from beyond the arc - in a 117-109 victory.

It's been three games since Paul's return, and he was tremendous in engineering wins at New York and Philadelphia in the past two contests. He totaled 46 points, 18 assists and nine steals while hitting 19 of 28 attempts from the field in that back-to-back stretch, which concluded with Monday's 107-90 win over the 76ers.

"I think CP is one of the best players in the world," said guard Jamal Crawford, who has totaled 47 points in the past two games. "He does everything to set us up and get us going."

The Rockets (29-25) may feel the same way about Harden, who is among the league leaders with 26.1 points per game. He's been even better over the past four games, averaging 32.0 points on 54.1 percent shooting - 12 for 27 from long range.

Harden had 27 in Tuesday's 116-107 victory at Golden State, but stepped on David Lee's left shoe going for a fast-break layup and his right ankle twisted violently. He returned, but his reaction after the win hardly sounded like someone who'd be ready to go in less than 24 hours.

"Very tough. I can barely walk. Still limping," said Harden, who's already dealing with a nagging left knee injury. "I kind of felt the momentum going our way in the third quarter ... so I didn't want to shut it down."

Still, while Harden could rest up and head back home to Houston, where he'll be teammates with Paul and Blake Griffin in Sunday's All-Star game, he wasn't ready to rule himself out against the Clippers.

"Why not? I'm tough," he said, smiling.

The Rockets would likely have trouble in their final game before the break even if Harden was 100 percent. The Clippers have won all four meetings since Paul's arrival in LA, averaging 108.5 points.

Los Angeles has also taken three straight in the series at Staples Center, including a 95-91 victory behind Paul's 23 points and five steals in the most recent meeting there March 17.

Paul has averaged 24.8 points over his past four games against Houston, but Crawford did much of the damage with Paul out last month. He scored a game-high 30 points, including 12 straight to start the fourth quarter.

This time, Los Angeles may be without guard Chauncey Billups and forward Caron Butler, who are hampered by sore lower backs that kept them out of the win over the 76ers.

If Harden is out, Houston may need another big effort from Chandler Parsons, who had 21 points, nine assists and eight rebounds Tuesday. The second-year forward is second on the team with 14.5 points per game, and will participate in the NBA's Rising Stars Challenge during All-Star weekend.

While the Rockets are off until next Wednesday after this meeting, that's not the case for the Clippers. They'll be the road team against the Los Angeles Lakers on Thursday night.

Clippers beat Rockets 106-96 for 3rd straight win

LOS ANGELES (AP) The Clippers shot 77 percent and scored 46 points in the first quarter, then lost their killer instinct the rest of the game.

But they still led all the way in earning their third straight victory, 106-96 over the Houston Rockets on Wednesday night.

Caron Butler scored 17 of his 19 points in the opening quarter for Los Angeles. Blake Griffin had 20 points and 11 rebounds, Chauncey Billups had 19 points, Jamal Crawford scored 13 points and Chris Paul had 10 points and 11 assists as the Clippers started all their regulars again after the lineup had been hit by injuries during their recent Grammy road trip.

"We played great and got a little complacent with the lead," Billups said. "We've shown to lose our discipline sometimes."

Chandler Parsons scored 17 points, Jeremy Lin added 14 points and James Anderson had a season-high 14 for the Rockets, who have lost five straight to the Clippers and three of five overall.

"They came out on fire and we didn't do a good job of making it difficult for them," Lin said. "Once they got in a rhythm, it just kind of snowballed at least in the first quarter."

Lin was set to have an X-ray on his right wrist after a fall in the second quarter.

"I think it's fine. It just hurts," he said.

James Harden missed the game with a sprained right ankle and sore left knee after stepping on David Lee's left shoe in the fourth quarter against Golden State. Harden is the Rockets' lone All-Star selection.

"He's our best player," Parsons said. "Anytime your best player goes down it hurts your team, but we had to play without him. We still just need to compete without him because sometimes he's not going to be there."

With the Clippers' powerful starters reunited and shooting their highest percentage in a quarter this season, it wasn't enough that the Rockets shot 50 percent in the first. They still trailed 46-28 as the Clippers scored their most points in a period since 1986.

"It was like they were playing H-O-R-S-E," Rockets coach Kevin McHale said. "We had no presence defensively."

Los Angeles cooled off in the second but still led 69-49 at the break.

Both teams were sloppy, with the Rockets committing 21 turnovers to the Clippers' 19.

"It all starts from the defensive end," Parsons said. "It was a miserable performance. We're better than that. We're in a good spot right now, but we've got to win more games and we have to compete better with the elite teams."

Crawford's 3-pointer pushed the lead to 23 early in the second before the Rockets cut it to 11 on a basket by Lin. Then Los Angeles closed on a 10-2 run to end the half, punctuated by DeAndre Jordan's one-handed dunk off Paul's alley-oop pass.

Griffin's hook put the Clippers ahead by 22 points early in the third and the Rockets trailed 88-72 heading into the fourth.

The Rockets got within 11 points on two free throws by Anderson early in the fourth before the Clippers' starters returned and stretched their lead.

"We got to make sure we really put teams away," Griffin said.

Butler and Billups were game-time decisions after both had sore lower backs. Paul recently returned after missing 12 games with a bruised right knee cap, while Griffin came back after missing a couple games with a strained left hamstring.

"I'm waking muscles up that haven't worked in a long time," said Billups, who plans to play Thursday night against the Lakers. "I feel pretty good. They're trying to keep my minutes to 20 right now, but if we're going for the win, I might take a couple extra minutes."

NOTES: The Clippers went 4-4 on their recent Grammy road trip, third-best in 13 seasons of making the annual February trek. Their best record of 4-2 came last year and in 2006. ... THE FACTS: Turned out, Caron Butler and Chauncey Billups were just fine. The two most veteran starters for L.A. took turns punching holes in the short-handed Rockets on Wednesday night. Butler and Billups, who missed Monday's victory in Philadelphia with sore lower backs and were questionable leading up to the Houston game, had something else in common, scoring 19 points apiece to lead the Clippers to their third straight win 106-96 at Staples Center.

THE STAT: The Clippers scored 46 points in the opening quarter, the most by any NBA team in any quarter this season. The point total also represented the most by the Clippers in a quarter since they scored a franchise-record 47 against the Spurs on March 7, 1986. The Clippers shot 77.3 percent in the opening 12 minutes, which was also a season high.

QUOTABLE: "Chauncey hit some great shots. He was hot early. Caron really got us off to a good start and did a good job defensively, which was good to see."

TURNING POINT: The hot start for the Clippers allowed them to take their foot off the gas in the second and Houston took advantage by cutting a 23-point deficit at the start of the quarter to 11 on a driving dunk by Chandler Parsons with 2:40 remaining in the half. The Clippers got back on their horse, however, and outscored the Rockets 11-2 down the stretch to push their lead back to 20. Houston didn't get back within 11 until its final basket of the game.

HOT: Playing in just his sixth game this season after two long stints on the injury list, Billups finished in double figures for the first time since he ruptured his Achilles tendon last February in Orlando. Blake Griffin and Chris Paul also turned in double-doubles for the Clippers. Griffin finished with 20 points and 11 rebounds for his 22nd double-double of the season. Paul, in his fourth game back after missing the previous nine with a bruised right kneecap, had 10 points and 11 assists. The Rockets played without leading scorer James Harden, who tweaked his right ankle in Tuesday's victory at Golden State, so James Anderson took advantage of the extra minutes and scored a season-high 14 for Houston.

NOT: The player who started in place of Harden wasn't nearly as effective as Anderson. Carlos Delfino made his second start of the season but shot 1-for-6 from the floor with three points, his lowest-scoring game since shooting 1-for-6 and scoring two points Jan. 2 against New Orleans. L.A's bench had an unusually quiet night. Second in the league in bench scoring coming in, the Clippers were outscored by Houston's reserves 42-32. It marked just the 15th time L.A.'s bench has been outscored this season.

QUOTABLE II: "I just wasn't pleased with our second unit's energy. I don't think they had any sense of urgency guarding. We relied a lot on the starters and their energy."

GOOD MOVE: The Clippers were able to rest their most senior member of the team, 18-year veteran Grant Hill, leaving him fresh for Thursday's clash against the Lakers. Hill has yet to score in double figures since making his season debut Jan. 12.

BAD MOVE: The Clippers made 19 of their first 24 field-goal attempts for a blistering 79.2 percent success rate, but shot just 18-for-51 the rest of the way (35.3). That allowed the Rockets to cut into the deficit just enough for L.A. to play its key starters during the fourth quarter. The Lakers, meanwhile, have been off their feet since Tuesday night.

NOTABLE: Houston rookie Donatas Motiejunas, a 7-foot center from Lithuania, scored 12 of his season-high 13 points in the fourth quarter. ... Houston's loss allowed the Lakers to creep within 2 ½ games of the eighth and final playoff spot, which is currently occupied by the Rockets. ... Houston has lost five straight against the Clippers. ... L.A. won its 25th game by 10 points or more this season, second only to the Thunder (27). ... The Rockets ended a 10-game streak with at least 100 points.
