The Minnesota Timberwolves got the best of the Cleveland Cavaliers in the last meeting, though each team had a much different look.

Minnesota looks to avoid a ninth consecutive road loss as Cleveland continues its seven-game homestand Monday night.

Kevin Love scored a season-high 36 points and grabbed 13 rebounds Dec. 7 in the Timberwolves' 91-73 home win over the Cavaliers, who were playing their 10th of an 11-game stretch without Kyrie Irving as he recovered from a broken finger.

Monday's meeting should have a different feel.

Love once again broke his right hand, and Minnesota (18-30) has gone 3-16 since he went down Jan. 3. It also has played the last three games without Andrei Kirilenko (strained right quad), including Sunday's 105-88 loss at Memphis.

J.J. Barea also sat out with a sprained left foot.

Luke Ridnour and Ricky Rubio each scored 17 points for the Wolves, who have lost by an average of 13.3 points during an eight-game road skid.

They committed 20 turnovers Sunday and rank in the bottom third of the league averaging 15.3 per game.

"We've got to take care of the ball," said Dante Cunningham, the only player who logged minutes for Minnesota who did not commit a turnover. "They took advantage of it, and it was hard for us to get back in the game."

Minnesota, which ranks among the league's worst-shooting teams at 43.7 percent, was outscored 16-0 in fast-break points.

"We like to play in the fast break, but (the Grizzlies) get back on the defense pretty good," Rubio said. "They didn't let us get any easy baskets."

While Cleveland is last in the NBA in field-goal percentage defense (47.6) and ranks 28th shooting 42.8 percent from the field, it has committed an average of only 9.3 turnovers over its last three games.

It has played much better since the return of Irving, who will partake in this coming weekend's All-Star festivities in Houston.

The Cavs (16-35) have won six of nine despite Saturday's 111-103 loss to Denver, with Irving averaging 26.9 points and shooting 52.4 percent in that stretch.

Alonzo Gee hit all eight of his field goal attempts and finished with 20 points Saturday, equaling his total from his previous three games combined. Irving scored a game-high 26 points and added seven assists for Cleveland, which had its three-game winning streak snapped.

"I feel like we're still making steps in the right direction," Irving said. "Both groups, the starters and the bench were lacking a bit of energy. We were a step behind.

"Partly, that stems from me just not being aware. Going forward, we just have to learn from this game and get ready for Monday."

Cleveland has lost three of the last four meetings with Minnesota, including a 98-97 defeat Dec. 26, 2010, that ended a four-game home winning streak in the series.

The Cavaliers dropped 12 of their first 15 games at Quicken Loans Arena but have since won six of eight there despite Saturday's defeat.

"In my mind, we didn't take a step back at all," coach Byron Scott said. "I'm not disappointed in our effort."

Ridnour, Timberwolves end road skid, beat Cavs

CLEVELAND (AP) All the losses and injuries had been piling up for weeks on the Timberwolves. They were shaken, unsure, almost helpless to stop them.

They were desperate for a break. And finally, they got one.

Luke Ridnour scored 21 points, Ricky Rubio added 13 and 10 assists and Minnesota snapped an eight-game road losing streak, beating the Cleveland Cavaliers 100-92 on Monday night.

"We needed that bad, man," Ridnour said.

He made a critical 3-pointer with 1:43 left and scored 13 points in the fourth quarter for the banged-up Timberwolves, who hadn't won on the road since Jan. 3 - star center Kevin Love's last game before he was lost indefinitely with a broken hand.

Nikola Pekovic added 16 points and 10 rebounds as Minnesota ended a four-game losing streak and improved to just 4-16 since losing Love.

"It's been a long month for us," Ridnour said. "It's always tough. We're competitors. You want to win games. Losing, as much as you don't want to say it, takes a toll on you. This is a good one for us."

Kyrie Irving scored 20 points and Tristan Thompson had 16 for the Cavs, who were within 82-81 in the fourth before Ridnour sparked a 10-2 run by the Timberwolves. Minnesota shot 75 percent (12 of 16) in the fourth quarter, leaving Cleveland swingman C.J. Miles to call out his teammates.

"We basically did it to ourselves," he said. "They made some tough shots - don't take anything away from them - but for the most part, we gave the game to them. We just don't get it. It was just a poor effort from the start. It just didn't look like we were interested."

Cavs coach Byron Scott was at a loss to explain perhaps his team's worst loss this season.

"I'm baffled," Scott said. "We had a little adversity and we scattered. We didn't come together."

Before the game, Minnesota coach Rick Adelman said the losing and mounting injuries had taken a toll on his players.

"When you go through the things we've had to go through the last two or three weeks, it wears on you mentally," said Adelman, who recently took an extended absence to be with his wife, Mary Kay, as she recovers from seizures. "They're human. You get out there and bust your tails and lose a close game in the last minute it starts to wear on you big time."

At one point in the second half, a frustrated Rubio slapped the padded basket support after picking up a foul on a charge.

Afterward, Adelman praised his players for persevering.

"In this league you've got to be mentally tough enough to get through it," he said. "You've got to find a way to win. I hope it's a big boost for us."

Irving, whose late-game heroics have led Cleveland to some recent wins, tried to rally the Cavs but couldn't. He had two bad misses and a turnover in a three-minute stretch.

Still, the Cavs were within striking distance when Thompson made two free throws to pulled Cleveland within 92-89 with 1:56 remaining. But Ridnour, who always seems to play well against Cleveland, buried his key 3-pointer from the right side and hit another short jumper with 9 seconds left to cap just Minnesota's second win in 12 games.

Derrick Williams had 13 points and Mickael Gelabale and Alexey Shved added 11 apiece for the Timberwolves.

Irving rolled his left ankle late in the first half when he landed on Shved's foot after making a 3-pointer. Irving hopped around in obvious pain but stayed in the game for a few more seconds. He was then replaced and limped to the locker room for treatment.

Irving played his usual minutes in the second half. He was not available following the game, and was seen getting treatment in the trainer's room.

Notes: Irving said he hasn't given much thought to he and LeBron James some day playing together. James can opt out of his contract after the 2014 season and there has been speculation he might return to Cleveland. "The potential is endless if it ever did happen," Irving said. "Obviously, I would be 22 and still a young guy." Irving said he and James "talk often." ... Wolves G J.J. Barea played 15 minutes after missing Sunday's game with a sprained left foot. Minnesota was also without Andrei Kirilenko (strained quad), F Chase Budinger (knee surgery), G Brandon Roy (knee) and G Malcolm Lee (knee, hip surgery).

THE FACTS: Shooting guard Luke Ridnour scored 13 of his game-high 21 points in the fourth quarter as the short-handed Minnesota Timberwolves beat the Cleveland Cavaliers 100-92. Center Nikola Pekovic added 16 points and 10 rebounds for the Timberwolves, while point guard Ricky Rubio collected 13 points, 10 assists and five steals. All-Star point guard Kyrie Irving had 20 points and seven assists for the Cavaliers, who also received 16 points and nine boards from power forward Tristan Thompson. Minnesota only dressed 10 players in snapping its eight-game road losing streak dating back to Jan. 9.

QUOTABLE: "We needed that win bad. It's been a long month for us. As much as you don't want to admit it, losing does take a toll on you. It's been a while since we've won on the road, so this was a good one for us to finally win."

THE STAT: The five injured Timberwolves who sat out the game are averaging a combined 54.1 points, which is more than half of their team average of 95.2 per game. Small forwards Andrei Kirilenko (right quadriceps) and Chase Budinger (left knee), power forward Kevin Love (right hand), shooting guard Brandon Roy (right knee), and point guard Malcolm Lee comprise the ailing quintet. "With all the players we have injured, everyone has to step up for us," Rubio said. "Today, everyone did that. We fight all the way through and win the game together."

TURNING POINT: Ridnour began his fourth-quarter barrage by hitting a mid-range jumper with 8:32 left that put Minnesota ahead for good at 78-76. The nine-year veteran added four field goals, including a 3-pointer, and two free throws in the final 6:09 as the Timberwolves won for the third time in their last 18 games. "Luke has been amazing all year long," Rubio said. "You have to give him credit for making big shots and helping the team in a lot of different ways." Ridnour finished the game 9-for-14 from the field, 1-of-2 beyond the arc, and 2-for-2 from the foul line.

QUOTABLE II: "It was just a (very)-poor effort by us from the start. It didn't look like we were interested. Minnesota made some tough shots -- don't take anything away from their guys -- but for the most part, we gave this game to them."

HOT: The Timberwolves only dressed four guards -- Ridnour, Rubio, Alexey Shved and J.J. Barea -- but they combined to shoot 21-for-36 from the field (58.3 percent) and score 50 points. ... Minnesota small forward Mickael Gelabale netted 11 points and six rebounds in 28 minutes. The sharpshooter from Guadeloupe had been out of the NBA for 4 1/2 years until signing with the Timberwolves on Jan. 19. ... Rubio's five steals tied his season high. ... Cavaliers rookie shooting guard Dion Waiters made all six of his field goal attempts. ... Thompson had a career-high four steals and is averaging 14.6 points and 10.6 rebounds over his last 26 games.

NOT: Irving suffered a left ankle injury in the second when he landed on Shved's foot after making a 3-pointer. The reigning NBA Rookie of the Year returned to the court at the start of the third -- ringing up 11 points and four assists in the second half -- before receiving medical treatment after the game. ... Waiters made six turnovers in 21 minutes. ... Cavaliers center Tyler Zeller did not score and is 1-for-5 shooting over 82 minutes in the last three games. ... The Timberwolves committed 22 turnovers, including a season-high seven by Rubio. ... Minnesota power forward Derrick Williams was limited to 16 minutes because of foul trouble.

QUOTABLE III: "I don't know if it was our worst loss of the year, but it wasn't pretty. It was terrible in the second half. I thought we were careless. The spacing was bad. We went back to some old, bad habits. We can't play that way."

GOOD MOVE: Timberwolves coach Rick Adelman told Ridnour that he would get him more involved in the offense against the Cavaliers. He did, as Ridnour attempted a team-high tying 14 shots, nearly all of which were wide open. "Rick said he would try and run some stuff and get me more looks tonight," Ridnour said. "He did a great job coaching, like he always does, because he was able to make that happen."

BAD MOVE: Barea missed Minnesota's last game with a left mid-foot sprain that he suffered on Feb. 8 at New York. The Puerto Rico native declared himself ready to play just before tipoff, but was visibly hampered by the injury as the game wore on. Barea had five points, three assists and three turnovers in 15 minutes. "I didn't think he was moving well at all, especially in the second half," Adelman said.

NOTABLE: Miles openly criticized his Cavaliers teammates following the loss, saying, "You look out on the floor and see five guys with their shoulders down. Then at the end, guys get so focused on, 'What can I do to get mine (statistics) if we're going to lose the game.' I don't buy into the youth thing. We've got to get better at playing the right way." ... Cleveland is 3-2 on its seven-game homestand, which runs through Feb. 20. ... The Timberwolves had not won on the road since Jan. 3 at Denver, which was the last game that Love played in. ... Minnesota is 7-21 since Dec. 15, when it moved a season-high three games above .500.
