Nets-Pacers Preview

After a couple of much-needed days off, the Indiana Pacers will look to begin another home winning streak against a team that's had trouble beating them at Bankers Life Fieldhouse.

The Pacers attempt to get back on track by winning a sixth straight home meeting with the Brooklyn Nets on Monday night.

Central Division-leading Indiana (31-20) had won five straight games before Friday's 100-98 overtime loss to Toronto that seemed like a cruel joke being played on a fatigued team fighting through its fourth game in five nights - including a back-to-back-to-back stretch.

"We understood that after winning three in a row in three nights that we weren't out of the clear," coach Frank Vogel said.

The Pacers had tired legs and their 15-game home winning streak ended as they dropped to 20-4 in Indianapolis.

"We're pretty fatigued. I felt like (Friday) was the toughest day of this whole stretch, even through the back-to-back-to-back," said Paul George who finished with 26 points and 14 rebounds Friday.

Vogel still didn't take it easy on his team in Sunday's practice, trying to get his players back into a routine.

"It wasn't light," Vogel told the team's official website. "It was more like let's get them back running up and down, playing, feeling together and hopefully settle into more of a normal week this week."

He also said the Pacers aren't taking Friday's defeat lightly despite being in a good position with the All-Star break approaching.

"The bigger picture for us is we felt like we let one slip away the other night," Vogel said. "Every game matters, it doesn't matter who our opponent is. Every game is huge right now. We're a half-game ahead of Chicago right now in our division."

Indiana, though, has dropped its last two meetings with Brooklyn - both on the road - including a 97-86 loss Jan. 13. David West, who scored 30 points Friday, netted 27 in that contest.

The Nets, though, have struggled of late. They've dropped six of nine after falling 111-86 to San Antonio on Sunday, and each of the losses have come by an average of 17.7 points.

Brooklyn (29-22) led by six at halftime but was outscored 30-14 in the third quarter.

"I don't know what it is, but you know, it just seems when a team makes a run on us, man, it just takes the air out of us," said Joe Johnson, who scored a team-high 19 points. "It shouldn't be that way. We should be able to respond, but it hasn't been the case."

Deron Williams, who scored 22 points and added nine assists in the first meeting with the Pacers, said the boos the Nets received from the home crowd weren't unwarranted.

"I mean, (we) deserve it," said Williams, who will miss this game and Wednesday's contest at home against Denver after getting treatment on his ankles. "These people pay money to come see us play and play better than that. You can't ever be mad at that."

P.J. Carlesimo won 12 of his first 14 games as interim coach, but he's finding things to be more difficult during this stretch, during which the Nets are shooting 43.0 percent.

"A lot of the things that we did well, we stopped doing," Carlesimo said.

Indiana has won eight of the last nine meetings between these teams at home.

Nets rally late, beat Pacers 89-84 in OT

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) Brooklyn figured out how to win without its most versatile offensive player Monday night.

Feed Brook Lopez early and often, keep Reggie Evans active on the glass and put the ball in Joe Johnson's hands with the game on the line.

It may need to keep that formula a while longer.

Lopez scored 25 points, Evans grabbed 22 rebounds and Johnson tied the score with a 10-foot bank shot to force overtime before closing it out with four straight free throws to give the Nets an 89-84 victory - their first in six tries at Bankers Life Fieldhouse.

For the Nets, this was vindication.

"We wanted to come out tonight and make a statement," Johnson said after finishing with 17 points. "We were just being very resilient. Guys were coming up big and making plays."

Brooklyn (30-22) needed every one of those plays to turn things around.

They came into Monday night with three losses in four games, including a 111-86 shellacking at home Sunday. They had lost five straight in Indianapolis, one of the best home teams in the league this season, and had been struggling badly to score, too. Plus, they were missing guard Deron Williams, who was diagnosed with synovitis, an inflammation of the ankle joint linings. He received platelet rich plasma treatment on both ankles and isn't expected to return to the floor until after the All-Star break.

But without Williams, the Nets stayed focused.

They had only 11 turnovers, forced the normally proficient Pacers to shoot just 34.4 percent, limited All-Star forward Paul George to five points on 1-of-10 shooting, and rallied late in regulation in a game that looked all but lost. Then, in overtime, the Nets refused to let this one slip away.

"We played, we got down, we hustled, we got to the free-throw line and we battled them on the boards," interim coach P.J. Carelsimo said. "The only good thing about getting killed by San Antonio was the next day we beat one of the better teams in the league."

It was a miserable night for the Pacers (31-21).

George was out of sync all night and eventually fouled out with 1:03 left in regulation.

David West, Indiana's other big scorer, got poked in the eye by Lopez 60 seconds into the game. When he returned to start the second half, he didn't look like himself. He was just 2 of 11 from the field with seven points and six rebounds and missed three straight midrange shots at the end of regulation, the last a 14-footer that bounced off the front of the rim as time expired.

Instead, the Pacers have now followed their longest winning streak of the season (five) with two straight losses and their longest home winning streak (15) in more than a decade with back-to-back overtime losses. And Chicago's loss at San Antonio on Monday was the only thing that allowed them to retain the Central Division lead.

George Hill led the Pacers with 22 points and six assists while Lance Stephenson and Jeff Pendergraph each had 14. It was a season-high for Pendergraph, whose previous best was six.

Whether it was fatigue from this recent stretch, five games in eight days, or just an off-night, the Pacers were most frustrated by letting another one get away.

"If we make half the shots we missed we're in the 90s and our defense held them in the 70s for the most part," George lamented. "Credit them. They came in and played a hard game."

Brooklyn also dominated the game when it mattered most.

Indiana used a late 7-0 run to turn a 72-69 deficit into a 76-72 lead with 1:38 to go. But when George fouled out, the complexion of the game changed.

Evans, who scored just eight points, made 1 of 2 free throws to make it a one-possession game. West missed a 16-foot step-back jumper, and when D.J. Augustin was called for a foul, Gerald Wallace made 1 of 2 free throws to cut the lead to two. West followed that by missing a 17-footer and Johnson answered with a 10-foot bank shot to tie it.

West's next miss, at the buzzer, sent the game into overtime.

"Tough shooting night, one of those nights where we couldn't put the ball in the basket," Pacers coach Frank Vogel said.

Brooklyn made the Pacers pay for it.

After Roy Hibbert opened the overtime with a free throw, the Nets went on a 9-2 run to make it 85-79 with 45.2 seconds to go, and Johnson closed out the win by making four straight free throws.

"It was great. It was a complete team game from top to bottom," Lopez said. "It was a good win tonight as we responded to their runs."

Notes: Former Brooklyn Dodgers pitcher Carl Erskine, who lives in nearby Anderson, Ind., played the national anthem on a harmonica for Brooklyn's inaugural trip to Bankers Life Fieldhouse. ... The Pacers may have played their final game without All-Star forward Danny Granger, who returned to full practice Sunday and could be back in uniform Wednesday against Charlotte. ... Brooklyn has failed to score 100 points in eight straight games. ... Indiana lost only three home games from Nov. 13 through Feb. 7, but has now lost twice at home in four days.

THE FACTS: The Brooklyn Nets beat the Indiana Pacers 89-84 in overtime on Monday at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. Indiana led 76-72 with 1:38 left, but missed its final four shots of regulation as the Nets rallied to force overtime thanks to Joe Johnson's tough driving floater with 13 seconds remaining. New Jersey (30-22) then dominated the extra session to win going away. It was the Nets' ninth consecutive overtime win, and fourth this season. Brook Lopez was dominant for the Nets, who played without injured point guard Deron Williams, racking up 25 points and eight rebounds. Johnson scored 17 while Reggie Evans yanked 22 rebounds. George Hill led Indiana (31-21) with 22 points.

QUOTABLE: "We played, we got down, we hustled, we got to the free-throw line and we battled them on the boards. They had us. The big deficit was early but we kind of worked our way back in. THE STAT: Indiana has lost consecutive home games for the first time since Feb. 11 and 14, 2012 -- almost a full calendar year.

TURNING POINT: Indiana trailed 70-64 with 6:15 remaining, but Hill sparked a 12-2 run with three buckets, including a steal and layup that put the Pacers ahead 76-72 with 1:38 remaining. But the Pacers shot 2-for-14 thereafter to let the game slip away. Tyshawn Taylor hit two difficult buckets late in the shot clock to put the Nets ahead to stay in overtime.

QUOTABLE II: "We were definitely desperate after dropping our last two games. We wanted to come out tonight and make a statement."

GOOD MOVE: With David West bothered by a scratched left eye sustained early in the first quarter, Indiana coach Frank Vogel went with little-used reserve power forward Jeff Pendergraph for extended minutes in the second quarter. He responded with 10 points and seven rebounds in the period as the Pacers wiped out a 10-point deficit to take a five-point lead at halftime. Pendergraph finished with a season-high 14 points and 10 rebounds.

BAD MOVE: The Pacers had the opportunity for the last shot in regulation, but Hill dribbled it away. With 13 seconds remaining, the Nets had a foul to give, but Hill let nine seconds elapse before starting his move to the bucket and was fouled immediately. That left the Pacers just 3.2 seconds to get the final shot, a forced left-handed runner that West missed at the buzzer.

HOT: Two players whose roles were expanded in the absence of Williams came through for the Nets, as Taylor scored a career-high 12 points on 5-for-9 shooting and Marshon Brooks had nine points on 4-for-8 shooting in 15 minutes. Pendergraph was 7-for-11 in his biggest game of the year. ... Hill ( 9 -for-18) and Lance Stephenson (6-for-12) were the only Indiana starters to hit at least half their shots.

NOT: Indiana's three current and former All-Stars combined to shoot 8-for-39 (.205) as Paul George shot 1-for-10, West 2-for-11 and Roy Hibbert 5-for-18. ... The Nets' two leading scorers, Lopez and Johnson, combined to shoot 14-for-36 (.389), which was torrid in comparison.

NOTABLE: The Nets expect to regain the services of Williams after the All-Star break. Williams had Platement Rich Plasma injections in both ankles Monday in an effort to alleviate chronic pain. Nets general manager Billy King said the decision was made to have Williams receive the treatment because it would allow a full week for the start point guard to recover. He also said Williams should be good to go after the break. ... The Pacers hope to regain the services of their injured star, Danny Granger, for either Wednesday's game against Charlotte or immediately after the All-Star break. Granger, out all season with left knee tendinosis, participated in a full practice Sunday. Whenever Granger returns, he will come off the bench until he rebuilds his conditioning and rhythm before returning to the lineup, with Stephenson ticketed for the second unit ... Indiana shot just 34.4 percent and was 5-for-22 (.227) from the 3-point line. ... Three of the Pacers' last four losses have come in overtime. ... Despite his poor shooting night, Hibbert had his 12th double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
