While the Denver Nuggets have been one of the NBA's highest-scoring teams all season, their offense has peaked during their current tear.

The Cleveland Cavaliers have also stepped up their offensive production while putting together their best stretch.

The pace could be fast and furious in Cleveland on Saturday night when the Nuggets look for their first nine-game winning streak in eight seasons versus a Cavaliers team trying to win four straight for the first time in the post-LeBron James era.

After winning seven of their eight straight at home, Denver (32-18) hopes to carry that success on its four-game road trip. The Nuggets have won 14 of 16 to move into the fourth spot in the Western Conference.

They haven't won nine in a row since claiming 10 straight during the 2004-05 season.

Denver, which ranks near the top of the league in scoring (104.7 ppg), reached its highest point total of the season with a 128-96 win over defensive-minded Chicago on Thursday.

The Nuggets' offense has overwhelmed everyone during their streak, scoring 115.0 points per game while shooting 50.1 percent from the field.

"We're out here trying to do our best and we're out here trying to set records," said forward Kenneth Faried, who had 21 points and 12 rebounds against a Bulls team that ranks near the top of the NBA defensively.

Faried has made a big impact lately, averaging 16.5 points while shooting 66.7 percent from the field in his last four games. He also had 17 points on 6-of-7 shooting and 11 rebounds in a 98-91 win over Cleveland on Jan. 11.

Denver leading scorer Danilo Gallinari had 23 points on 8-of-13 shooting, while center Kosta Koufos had a career-high 21 in that meeting, its fifth win in six games in this series.

While they're the only team to hold Denver under 100 points at home since Jan. 5, the Cavaliers (16-34) have given up an average of 107.6 points in their last five games overall. Cleveland, though, has overcome its defensive shortcomings by averaging 118.7 points - 21.7 above its season average - during their three-game winning streak.

The Cavaliers haven't won four straight since taking eight in a row at the end of James' final season in 2009-10.

Cleveland made a season-high 34 free throws in 41 attempts in a 119-108 victory over Orlando on Friday for its sixth win in eight games.

"We're making steps in the right direction," coach Byron Scott said. "We're playing good basketball right now, but we can play better."

Guards Kyrie Irving and Dion Waiters combined for 39 points on 15-of-27 shooting on Friday and totaled 46 while shooting 17 for 39 from the field in the first meeting with the Nuggets.

Irving has scored 29.1 points per game and hit 21 of 35 from 3-point range in his last eight at home.

Forward Marreese Speights may also be a factor, having averaged 14.7 points and 7.3 rebounds in six games since being acquired from Memphis.

The Cavaliers hope to be far more efficient from beyond the arc after shooting 5 for 24 in the first meeting. They've made 25 of 56 (44.6 percent) from 3-point range in their last three games.

The Nuggets, however, have won six of their last eight trips to Cleveland.

Nuggets win ninth straight, beat Cavaliers 111-103

CLEVELAND (AP) Denver coach George Karl thinks it's about time people started taking notice of his team.

Given the fact the Nuggets are the NBA's longest active winning streak, Karl has good reason to feel that way.

Danilo Gallinari scored 19 points, Kenneth Faried added 17 and Denver won their ninth straight game with a 111-103 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers on Saturday night.

Although the Nuggets have the fourth-best record in the Western Conference, no Denver player was selected for next Sunday's All-Star Game, a fact Karl is quick to point out.

"We're going to try and shock the world and become the first team to win a championship without an All-Star," he said.

The Nuggets, who have won 15 of 17, are on their longest winning streak since posting 10 straight victories from March 30-April 15, 2005. San Antonio had an 11-game streak snapped Friday night.

Kyrie Irving led Cleveland with 26 points, but was plagued by foul trouble. The All-Star guard picked up his fourth foul with 5:20 remaining in the third quarter and went to the bench with the Nuggets leading 72-61. Irving returned to start the fourth quarter with Denver ahead 84-73. He scored 12 points in the period, but Cleveland's rally fell short.

Irving was down on the court briefly after taking a knee to the thigh in the fourth quarter, but said following the game he was OK.

The loss ended Cleveland's three-game winning streak that matched a season high. The Cavaliers haven't won four games in a row since March 17-24, 2010, which was LeBron James' final season with the franchise.

"We ran into a team playing very good basketball," Cleveland coach Byron Scott said. "I'm not disappointed in our effort. Tonight, they were a better team."

Denver, which began a four-game road trip, is scheduled to play in Boston on Sunday. The Nuggets planned to fly into Boston following Saturday's game. The team reserved hotel rooms in Cleveland in case their plans were changed thanks to the massive snowstorm that hit the Northeast this weekend.

Denver showed its depth by placing eight players in double figures.

"There are only about 10 true superstars in the NBA, I think, but I believe Andre Iguodala, Ty Lawson, Andre Miller, and Kenneth Faried are in the next 40 players," Karl said.

Alonzo Gee scored 20 points for Cleveland with 16 coming in the first quarter.

The Nuggets built a 14-point lead in the fourth quarter. The Cavaliers cut the gap to 105-99 with 1:40 remaining, but Gallinari's two free throws and Faried's dunk put the game away.

The Nuggets, who were off Friday while the Cavaliers beat Orlando at home, looked like the fresher team. Denver outscored Cleveland 19-5 in fast-break points. The Nuggets also had 62 points in the paint compared to 32 for the Cavaliers.

"The starters and the bench were lacking a bit of energy," Irving said. "We were a step behind and they outplayed us."

The game featured physical play by both teams, particularly in the second half. Cavaliers center Tyler Zeller was given a technical foul in the third quarter for shoving Nuggets center JaVale McGee while Faried and Cleveland forward Tristan Thompson got tangled up on a couple of occasions.

"It was my kind of game tonight," Faried said.

Karl had to be restrained by his assistants for going after the officials in the third quarter. Karl was angry about a foul call that went against his team.

Denver took a quick 8-0 lead, but Gee, who had scored 14 points his last two games combined, kept Cleveland in the game by scoring 15 of the Cavaliers' first 17 points.

Cleveland led 46-41 late in the second quarter, but Denver finished the half on a 17-6 run. The Nuggets scored the last six points of the half over the final 41.9 seconds to take a 58-52 lead into the locker room. Irving picked up two fouls in a span of 20 seconds late in the quarter, giving him three for the half.

Faried appeared to injure his knee in the first quarter, but still had 13 points and five rebounds in the half.

"I'm a warrior," he said. "I'm going to play tomorrow. Definitely, I'm playing."

Iguodala scored 14 points for the Nuggets, while McGee added 13. Lawson had 11 points while Miller, Kosta Koufos and Corey Brewer scored 10 apiece.

NOTES: Denver, which came in as the worst free-throw shooting team in the league (69.1 percent), made 25 of 34 shots from the line. ... The Nuggets are 11-15 away from home. ... The Cavaliers continue their seven-game homestand Monday against Minnesota. Cleveland, which defeated Orlando on Friday, played home games on back-to-back nights for the only time this season. ... Cleveland is 11-12 since Dec. 22.

THE FACTS: Small forward Danilo Gallinari collected 19 points, nine rebounds and two blocked shots as the Denver Nuggets defeated the Cleveland Cavaliers 111-103. Power forward Kenneth Faried added 17 points and seven boards for the Nuggets, who extended their winning streak to nine games and are 15-2 since Jan. 5. All-Star point guard Kyrie Irving led the Cavaliers across the board with 26 points, six rebounds and seven assists, while small forward Alonzo Gee chipped in 20 points. Denver's win streak is its longest since a 10-gamer from March 30-April 15, 2005.

QUOTABLE: "We ran into a team that's playing pretty good basketball. To be honest with you, I thought we did a pretty good job of hanging in there. We challenged these guys and we played pretty hard for 48 minutes of basketball."

THE STAT: Eight Denver players reached double figures in scoring, including all five starters. Gallinari and Faried were joined by shooting guard Andre Iguodala (14), center JaVale McGee (13), point guard Ty Lawson (11), center Kosta Koufos (10), point guard Andre Miller (10), and shooting guard Corey Brewer (10). "Not only did we have eight players in double figures, all nine guys who played were a plus, which doesn't happen very often," Nuggets coach George Karl said. Small forward Wilson Chandler scored seven points and was a team-high plus-9 for Denver.

TURNING POINT: The Nuggets scored six straight points to end the first half, taking the lead for good at 58-52. Denver's 6-0 run came in the final 42 seconds of the second quarter and was fueled by two poor, quick shots taken by Cavaliers rookie shooting guard Dion Waiters. Lawson had four points and an assist during the spurt; the latter coming on a fast-break dunk by Iguodala with just 0.9 seconds left. "It helped that Cleveland played last night because our energy was at a higher level," Karl said.

QUOTABLE II: "Both of our groups -- the starters and the bench -- were lacking a bit of energy tonight. We were a step behind and they just outplayed us. Going forward, we just have to learn from this game."

HOT: The Nuggets outscored the Cavaliers 62-32 in the paint and had a 19-5 advantage in fast-break points. ... McGee shot 6-for-7 from the floor and had a game-best four blocked shots in 18 minutes off the bench. ... Miller had 10 points, six rebounds and five assists backing up Lawson. ... Ohio native Koufos shared game-high honors with nine rebounds. ... Cleveland has won six of its last nine games at Quicken Loans Arena. ... Gee made all eight of his field goal attempts, including three 3-pointers. He scored 16 points on 6-for-6 shooting in the opening quarter.

NOT: Cavaliers centers Tyler Zeller and Marreese Speights combined to shoot 2-for-13, making them 5-for-26 over the last two games. ... GOOD MOVE: The Nuggets received clearance to fly into Boston after the game, which was in doubt earlier in the day because Logan Airport was closed because of the East Coast blizzard. Denver is scheduled to play a 6 p.m. game Sunday against the Celtics. "Hopefully, the snow isn't too bad tonight, and we can have a relaxing day and sleep in," Karl said. "That would be nice, but we'll see what happens."

BAD MOVE: The Cavaliers played home games on consecutive nights for the first time this season, but Scott only went five players deep on his bench. Reserves Speights and power forward Luke Walton were visibly gassed and missed 12 of their 13 field goal attempts, while starters Zeller and Waiters were 2-for-9 and physically dominated by their Denver counterparts.

NOTABLE: Karl remains peeved that the Nuggets did not have a player selected for the NBA All-Star Game. "We're going to try and shock the world and become the first team to win a championship without an All-Star," he said. "There are only about 10 true superstars in the NBA, I think, but I believe Andre Iguodala, Ty Lawson, Andre Miller, and Kenneth Faried are in the next 40 players." ...
