Raptors-Pacers Preview

The Indiana Pacers haven't lost at home in two months, which makes it seem even stranger that one of their few home defeats this season came against the Toronto Raptors.

Seeking to atone for their worst offensive performance of the season in Indianapolis, the Pacers aim for their 16th straight home win Friday night versus Toronto.

Indiana (31-19) has won a season-high five straight overall, including three games in as many nights earlier this week. Monday's makeup game against Chicago set up the only back-to-back-to-back scenario in the NBA this season, and the Pacers won all three games by double digits.

They summoned enough energy to smother Philadelphia on Wednesday, holding the 76ers to 34.4 percent shooting in an 88-69 road victory.

"Our tanks were on E, but our team is a very, very mentally tough team. And we proved it tonight," coach Frank Vogel said. "It never felt like it was easy during the game. ... I'm proud of our guys for getting the win."

Vogel also must feel great about his team's play in the Hoosier State since its last home loss Dec. 7 against Denver. The Pacers have won 15 straight at Bankers Life Fieldhouse - their longest home streak since a 25-game run in 1999-2000 - by an average margin of 11.0 points, yielding just 86.2 points per game.

They're 20-3 at home this season, with the first loss a 74-72 defeat to Toronto on Nov. 13. Indiana's point total in that game was its lowest of the season, and its 32.0 percent shooting was its worst mark at home.

The Raptors (17-32) had lost their previous seven trips to Indiana, and they've since dropped 16 of 20 on the road. They also recently traded away Jose Calderon, who had a triple-double in the victory over the Pacers.

Newcomer Rudy Gay has averaged 24.7 points in three games with Toronto, but the Raptors have gone 1-2 while dealing with a tough stretch in their schedule. They routed the Los Angeles Clippers to open a three-game homestand last Friday, but followed with losses to Miami and Boston.

Andrea Bargnani returned from a 26-game absence due to an elbow injury in Wednesday's 99-95 defeat against the Celtics, scoring 13 points in 24 minutes off the bench. The Raptors led by 10 entering the fourth quarter, but quickly squandered the lead and fell to 4-18 when Bargnani is active this season.

"He gave us some good minutes," coach Dwane Casey said of Bargnani. "I thought he wore down a little bit and I didn't want to wear him down too much."

Bargnani has had a tough time against Indiana recently, shooting 27.4 percent - 4 of 21 from 3-point range - in his last five appearances in this series. Gay, too, has struggled to score against the Pacers this season, averaging just 12.5 points on 25.6 percent shooting in two matchups while with Memphis.

That's hardly surprising considering Indiana leads the NBA in holding opponents to 41.9 percent shooting.

The Pacers have been more potent than usual on offense lately, averaging 106.0 points in their last five home games. Paul George and David West continue to lead the way, combining to average 42.8 points on 51.3 percent shooting in that stretch.

The Raptors held George and West to a combined 23 points on 6-of-26 shooting in their November victory in Indiana.

Raptors rally late, surprise Pacers 100-98 in OT

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) Rudy Gay is making a difference in Toronto, and the Raptors couldn't be happier with their newest player.

Gay rediscovered his shooting touch in time to score 17 of his 23 points in the fourth quarter and overtime Friday night. He hit a 17-foot jumper with 1.7 seconds left in the extra period to send the Raptors past the Indiana Pacers 100-98.

"He definitely gives our team a lift. He's a closer, you know?" forward Amir Johnson said. "That's something we've been missing."

A week ago, Gay was in Memphis waiting to find out whether he would be traded.

Since arriving in Toronto, he's scored 20 or more points in all four games.

The win ended the Raptors' three-game losing streak and made them the first team to beat the Pacers on their home court twice this season.

Gay almost single-handedly rally Toronto (18-32) by making big play after big play - even when he wasn't making shots.

During the final sequence of regulation, it was Gay's missed layup that eventually led to Johnson's tip-in to make it 90-88 with 6.2 seconds left. And when it looked as though the Pacers had the game sealed, Gay stole a bad inbounds pass from David West that led to Johnson's buzzer-beating tip-in, which stood up following a replay review and forced the already weary Pacers to play an extra 5 minutes.

It was enough to push the Pacers over the edge.

DeMar DeRozan scored 22 points for Toronto, and Johnson finished with 14 points and 14 rebounds. But it was Gay who made all the right plays late.

"I like to think I make it easy for everybody, a lot more open shots for people," he said. "The Raptors have been playing great since I've been here, and we've been playing well with each other. You know, I just want to be in at the end of games where I can give the team a chance to win."

For the Pacers (31-20), it was a surprising end to a marvelous run.

Coming into the game, Indiana had won five straight, including three in three nights earlier this week. It had won 15 in a row at home, its longest streak since 1999-2000, beating Miami twice, New York, Chicago and Memphis along the way.

Yet coach Frank Vogel was understandably concerned about the fatigue factor as the Pacers played their fourth game in five nights, and eventually Central Division-leading Indiana ran out of steam.

West finished with 30 points, eight rebounds and five turnovers. All-Star forward Paul George had 26 points, 14 rebounds and five assists. The only other player to score in double figures was Lance Stephenson with 11, and it was clear over the final 17 minutes that the Pacers were gassed.

They opened the fourth quarter by missing their first eight shots and going 1 for 11, blowing a 72-64 lead, and they couldn't get Gay stopped or keep Johnson off the glass in the closing seconds.

"We're pretty fatigued. I felt like today was the toughest day of this whole stretch, even through the back-to-back-to-back," George said. "I just think it set in before the game."

Indiana still had chances.

It led 90-86 with 10.7 seconds left in regulation and inexplicably gave up two baskets without even forcing Toronto to foul.

In overtime, George Hill had a chance to give Indiana the lead from the free throw line but missed the second of two shots with 90 seconds left, leaving the game tied at 98. After West rebounded a missed shot with 1:08 to go, he turned it over. With the game still tied at 98, Hill lost the ball out of bounds off his leg with 10.7 seconds left.

That gave Gay a chance to break the tie with his jumper, which he did, and George had a good look at a 15-foot runner that rimmed out as time expired.

"We understood that after winning three in a row in three nights that we weren't out of the clear," Vogel said. "Sometimes, weird things happen at the end of games."

Gay's presence was hardly a surprise, though.

Before the game, Vogel talked about the difference he had noticed in Gay's play since the trade, and then he got to see it firsthand over those final 17 minutes.

"He gives you that. That's a guy that, no disrespect to anyone else we have, that can go one-on-one and finish a play. He's done it throughout his career. He got it for us," Raptors coach Dwane Casey said. "He has struggled, fought through a lot of frustration and again like I told him, we've got to fight through things, nothing's going to be easy."

NOTES: The Raptors lead the season series 2-1, with the road team winning all three games. All three games also have been decided by two points. ... The Pacers played without forward Sam Young, who had the flu. ... Andrea Bargnani came off the bench for the second time this week and finished with 14 points in 29 minutes for Toronto. He had started 245 consecutive games before Wednesday but is trying to work his way back after missing 26 games with a torn ligament in his right elbow and a strained right wrist. ... Indiana hadn't lost at home since Dec. 7 and hadn't given up 100 points at home since Nov. 23.

THE FACTS: In all three meetings this season, the Indiana Pacers' hopes against Toronto came down to one last shot. For the second time in a row, Paul George missed and the Raptors escaped, this time 100-98 in overtime Friday at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. Rudy Gay shook off a cold start to score 17 of his 23 points in the fourth quarter and overtime to rally the Raptors to their second victory in four games since acquiring the shooting guard in a trade with Memphis. Indiana (31-20) blew a four-point lead with 10.7 seconds left in regulation as Amir Johnson scored twice inside, the second a buzzer-beater that sent the game to overtime at 90-all. Indiana led 97-96 with 2:05 left in overtime but would not make another bucket. Gay's jumper with 1.7 seconds remaining put Toronto up 100-98, and George's twisting 17-foot floater bounced in and out at the buzzer. David West scored a game-high 30 to lead Indiana, but committed costly turnovers late in regulation and overtime. George had 26 points, 14 rebounds, and five assists. DeMar DeRozan scored 22 for the Raptors (18-32). The loss snapped winning streaks of five overall and 15 at home for the Pacers. Two of Indiana's four home losses have come to the Raptors.

QUOTABLE: "Rudy went for the layup and I was able to get the rebound and tip it in. Then he got back and got the steal on the inbounds pass and then got it to me. I was looking to get it back to him but he had fallen down. As soon as I missed the first shot I glanced at the game clock and saw that it said point-three so I just threw it back up."

THE STAT: In three games matched up against George, the first two with Memphis, Gay has shot 19 of 64 (.297) overall, missing all six of his 3-point attempts, and totaled 48 points (16.0).

TURNING POINT: Indiana took a 72-64 lead into the fourth quarter but missed its next nine shots as Gay sparked a 10-0 Toronto run with six consecutive points, including a jumper that put the visitors up 74-72. It remained close the rest of the way but Indiana lost a chance to win it in regulation. Up 90-86 with 10.7 seconds left, the Pacers yielded a tip-in to Johnson with 6.2 seconds left. Needing only to get the ball inbounds, West attempted a long lead pass to Lance Stephenson that Gay intercepted, feeding the ball in to Johnson, whose lay-in just beat the buzzer.

HOT: West hit 11 of 20 shots and pulled eight rebounds in his fourth 30-point game of the season but tied his season high with five turnovers. Andrea Bargnani (7 of 10) and Jonas Valanciunas (6 of 10) combined for 28 points as Toronto's bench enjoyed a 37-16 advantage over the Indiana reserves. Johnson made seven of his 12 shots and produced 14 points and 14 rebounds.

NOT: Gay (9 of 25) and DeRozan (7 of 17) both had high volume but low efficiency for the Raptors. George missed 11 of his 19 shots. Indiana missed nine free throws.

QUOTABLE III: "We just didn't make some smart plays. We lost an assignment on the initial basket (and) I was just careless with the ball. We just weren't able to close the game the right way."

NOTABLE: The Raptors had advantages of 22-15 on points off turnovers and 26-17 on second-chance points. ... Playing four games in five nights, George averaged 42.7 minutes. ...
