Suns-Grizzlies Preview

Their first game with some new faces went well for the Memphis Grizzlies, and now they've had a few days to really get on the same page.

Newcomer Tayshaun Prince and the Grizzlies look to take care of another inferior opponent and win the season series with the visiting Phoenix Suns on Tuesday night.

Prince, Ed Davis and Austin Daye were with Memphis (30-16) for one day before making their debuts Friday after being acquired in a three-team deal that sent leading scorer Rudy Gay to Toronto. The Grizzlies lost 106-89 to Oklahoma City on Wednesday in their first game following the trade, but with their new players available two days later, they defeated East-worst Washington 85-76.

"I was worried," coach Lionel Hollins said. "You never know. We had new players on the bench, so we had more people to work with. But you never know how it is going to work out when you have new guys for the first game."

Hollins now has had time to get those new players more accustomed to his style and their teammates with three days off since the Washington game.

"Marc Gasol was pretty much directing me every time Mike (Conley) called a play," said Prince, who shot 7 of 11 and had 14 points in 32 minutes off the bench. "There were times in the first half and the third quarter where we ran plays and I was kind of going here and going there not knowing what the situation was."

Prince, who started 672 consecutive games for Detroit before the trade, eventually could replace Jerryd Bayless in the starting lineup. Bayless has mostly come off the bench but started the last three contests, averaging 22.0 points in the first two before scoring 11 on 4-of-13 shooting Friday.

Daye and Davis only played five minutes apiece.

It appears they won't be major contributors, but Conley expects to step up. He's averaged 17.5 points and 17.0 field-goal attempts in two games since Gay's departure, well above his season averages.

"I'm a role player. I'll do whatever I have to do to win the game," Conley said. "Now, my role is to be more offensive-minded and try to make plays, be aggressive at all times and get up as many shots as I can."

Memphis also expects Zach Randolph (15.5 ppg) to get back on track. He's totaled 20 points over the past three games while shooting 9 of 34, but has grabbed 42 rebounds.

Randolph's season highs of 38 points and 22 rebounds came in the Suns' first visit to Memphis, a 108-98 Grizzlies overtime victory Dec. 4.

The teams have since split two meetings in Phoenix, with the Suns (16-32) averaging 81.5 points. Another low-scoring affair should be expected considering the Grizzlies are allowing a West-low 89.5 points per game, and the Suns are averaging 91.1 in their last 15.

Phoenix has lost four of five since winning Lindsey Hunter's first two games as coach following Alvin Gentry's firing. However, Golden State coach Mark Jackson had high praise for Hunter after his team defeated Phoenix 113-93 on Saturday.

"When you see a team like that, still battling, it's a reflection of the job the coach is doing," Jackson said. "He's done a very good job of trying to change their culture and they are on their way."

Michael Beasley scored at least 24 points for the third time in five contests, but the Suns fell to a West-worst 4-20 on the road.

Dragic helps Suns rally past Grizzlies

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) Goran Dragic was slowed by illnees during the first three quarters against Memphis. He managed to put together a strong fourth quarter and helped Phoenix get a win.

Dragic scored 15 of his 17 points in the final period to lead the Suns to a 96-90 victory over the Grizzlies on Tuesday night.

After scoring just two points on 1-for-6 shooting through three quarters, Dragic was 5 for 6 in the fourth - including three three-point plays to help the Suns snap a two-game losing streak.

"I was trying to stay in the game, then got a couple of steals and (three-point plays) that gave me the momentum," Dragic said. "My confidence went up. I always try to help my team and play as hard as possible."

After the score was tied at 88, Dragic scored six straight points to put the game away. The fourth-quarter performance was even more impressive when he said he had "some kind of virus," that weakened him. He said it affected his game through the first three periods, and afterwards, he said: "Right now, I feel awful."

While Dragic struggled early, Marcin Gortat carried the offense and finished with 20 points on 8-for-10 shooting from the field to lead the Suns. Jermaine O'Neal had 14 points, while Kendall Marshall added 11 points and Luis Scola finished with 10.

"(Gortat) played a good game," Scola said. "In the second half, Goran took over. .Jermaine came in and was big the whole game. I think we had a good game overall."

Jerryd Bayless scored a season-high 29 points on 11-for-15 shooting, including 3 of 4 on 3-pointers, to lead the Grizzlies. Zach Randolph had 21 points and 13 rebounds, and Tayshaun Prince scored 11 points.

But down the stretch, Memphis was out of synch. They, like the Suns committed seven turnovers in the fourth period, but three of Memphis' came in the final 3 minutes after Phoenix had taken the lead it would not surrender.

"That's what we focus on," said Suns interim coach Lindsey Hunter, who is now 4-4 since taking over for Alvin Gentry on Jan. 20. "That is what we are going to hang our hats on night in and night out. We don't always shoot the ball well, but one thing we can control is how we defend, and that is something we really, really stress."

Phoenix, which outscored Memphis 31-19 in the fourth, was able to hang on despite committing a season-high 22 turnovers, partly offset by shooting 51 percent. In addition to Gortat, O'Neal was 5 of 7 from the field, and Dragic finished 6 for 12.

"The disappointing part is they outscored us in the paint 52-40, and they got 11 offensive rebounds for 16 second-chance points," Memphis coach Lionel Hollins said. "Then we made some sloppy turnovers coming down the stretch for no reason."

The start of the second half was full of poor shooting. The Suns started 1 of 8, and Memphis was 2 of 17 during one stretch - with many of those rebound tips that rolled off the rim.

The shooting percentages, which were so good in the first half, decreased to a more normal number.

Neither team was able to get much of a buffer, but Memphis did make a push behind Bayless late in the third period, and a tip-in by Prince at the horn provided Memphis with a 71-65 lead entering the fourth.

"I just tried to get through the first three quarters," said Dragic, who was dealing with foul issues in addition to the virus. "In the fourth quarter, I got my confidence up."

Memphis' lead didn't hold up as Dragic converted consecutive three-point plays near the midpoint of the fourth, putting Phoenix up 80-79.

Dragic converted another three-point play when he was fouled on a 10-footer in the lane for an 86-82 lead. Bayless, meanwhile, was still connecting from the top of the key, and despite Dragic's production, the Suns' lead never reached more than six.

But Memphis' turnovers stymied any chance the Grizzlies had of another run. There was a backcourt violation, a bad pass by guard Mike Conley and then Prince and Bayless failed to connect on the inbounds pass with about 50 seconds left.

"We had a chance to win the game, but we had too many turnovers in the fourth and didn't get any opportunities," said Conley, who finished with nine points on 3 of 11 shooting and handed out five assists.

Conley's drive with 3 seconds remaining gave the Grizzlies a 52-50 lead at halftime.

Gortat hit his first seven shots, part of Phoenix hitting 60 percent until the latter stages of the half. They ended the half at 53 percent, Gortat going 8 of 10 from the field.

NOTES: Suns F Jermaine O'Neal returned to the lineup after missing the last seven games due to personal medical reasons. ... Officials reviewed a last-second tip-in by Prince at the end of the third before finally ruling that it came before the buzzer. The review was so close that all three officials looked at the shot on replay all the way through the break between the third and the fourth periods. ... Jared Dudley, who averages 12.2 points, third-best on the Suns, was scoreless in 17 minutes, missing all five of his shots. ... Bayless' previous season high was 23 at Oklahoma City on Jan. 31. ...Prince obtained last week in a three-team trade that sent Rudy Gay to Toronto, was in the Grizzlies' starting lineup after coming off the bench for his first game with Memphis. ... Phoenix is now 5-20 on the road this season. . The Suns' 22 turnovers were the most by a Grizzlies opponent since Dec. 21 when Dallas committed 24.

THE FACTS: Phoenix guard Goran Dragic was sick with a virus and through three quarters, it was quite apparent that he wasn't himself with just two points on 1-for-6 shooting. Dragic, however, shook off the bug long enough in the fourth quarter to score 15 points on 5-for-6 shooting to help the Suns pick up a road win at Memphis 96-90. Dragic's layup with 1:24 remaining broke an 88-88 tie, putting the Suns on top for good.

QUOTABLE: "I was struggling the first three quarters. I got two and-ones and got some momentum. I was feeling pretty OK. ... I feel awful, but it feels good when you win."

THE STAT: It was definitely a tale of two halves offensively for the Grizzlies. They shot 53.5 percent (23-for-43) in the first half as they took a 52-50 lead into the locker room. However, in the second half, the Grizzlies shot just 33.3 percent (13-for-39)

TURNING POINT: After leading for most the games, the Suns found themselves trailing 77-72 in the fourth quarter. After two free throws by Jermaine O'Neal, Dragic drove to the basket, scored and was fouled. After completing the 3-point play, Dragic did the same thing on the Suns next possession which regained the lead 80-79, but more importantly, got him in a groove for his big fourth quarter.

HOT: The Suns starting center Marcin Gortat and his backup O'Neal had their way in the post. Gortat made his first seven shots and finished with 20 points on 8-for-10 shooting. O'Neal was just as effective, making 5-for-7 shots for 14 points.

NOT: While the Suns big men were dominant, Grizzlies center Marc Gasol and backup forward Darrell Arthur struggled. Plagued with foul trouble trying to guard Gortat, Gasol had just six points as he missed six of his eight shots. Playing behind Gasol, Arthur was 1-for-10 from the floor, scoring four points.

NOTABLE: Memphis backup guard Jerryd Bayless continued his hot shooting, scoring a season-high 29 points while making 11 of his 15 shots, including all three of the Grizzlies' 3-pointers. Bayless has now scored 20 or more points in three of the last four games. His 29 points are the most by a Memphis reserve since Chucky Atkins had 29 Jan. 24, 2007 at Utah. ... Grizzlies guard Mike Conley struggled on both ends of the floor. Conley scored just nine points on 3-for-11 shooting, including 0-for-5 in the fourth quarter. He also had a hard time slowing down Dragic in the fourth quarter. ... The Grizzlies committed 10 turnovers in the second half, including four in the final three minutes. ... The Suns are now 4-4 under interim coach Lindsey Hunter. ... The Grizzlies are now 4-4 in their last eight games at FedExForum, where they are now 18-8 this season. They started the season 13-2 at home. ... Making his first start since being traded to Memphis from Detroit last week, forward Tayshaun Prince scored 11 points with six rebounds, four assists and three steals. ... The Suns have seven wins against 20-win Western Conference teams. ... All-Star forward Zach Randolph had 21 points and 13 rebounds for his 29th double-double of the season. In four games against Phoenix this season, Randolph averaged 24.5 points and 13.3 rebounds.
