Hornets-Timberwolves Preview

While the New Orleans Hornets haven't won much lately, their woes pale in comparison to those of their next opponent.

The Hornets, losers in five of six, will try to get heading back in the right direction by earning another road win over the sputtering Minnesota Timberwolves on Saturday night.

New Orleans (15-32) had won six of seven at one point last month, but its inability to contain opponents has hurt the team over the past three weeks. The Hornets have given up an average of 104.8 points while dropping six of eight.

They let Denver shoot 52.4 percent in a 113-98 defeat Friday, their third in a row, and that virtually negated a 52.8-percent performance at the other end of the floor. Ryan Anderson had 21 points off the bench but no other teammate scored more than 13.

Eric Gordon had nine points on 3-of-8 shooting after sitting out Wednesday's 104-99 defeat to Utah. It was a scheduled day off for Gordon, who missed New Orleans' first 29 games with right knee soreness and is currently not permitted to play in the second game of back-to-backs.

The Hornets also gave up 32 points on 22 turnovers Friday, their most in one game since a season-high 24 in a loss to Philadelphia on Nov. 7.

"The goal for is ... to get our minds right to play (Saturday) night," coach Monty Williams said. "We can't sweep this under the rug by any stretch. We have to understand that you can't turn the ball over against any team in the league that many times."

Gordon was one of six players in double figures with 16 points in a 104-92 victory over Minnesota on Jan. 11, and Greivis Vasquez had a team-best 18 points and 13 assists. Vasquez has 11 or more assists in six of his last eight games but just missed extending a three-game streak of double-digit performance Friday as he finished with nine.

The Hornets could use Vasquez's help to continue their recent success in Minnesota. They're 9-2 in their last 11 visits and have won the past two.

New Orleans has also prevailed in four of the last six overall matchups but lost 113-102 at home to the Timberwolves on Dec. 14. Nikola Pekovic had a career-high 31 points on 14-of-18 shooting and Andrei Kirilenko scored 21.

Minnesota, though, enters this game having lost 11 of 12 and a season-worst six in a row. The Timberwolves (17-26) have also matched another season high with three consecutive home defeats.

They cut a 29-point deficit to four with 5:55 remaining on Friday against the visiting Los Angeles Lakers, but would get no closer in a 111-100 defeat. In his second game back from a sprained ankle, Alexey Shved had a team-best 18 points and was one of five players in double figures.

"It's hard," point guard Ricky Rubio said. "We've been losing a lot. Even if we make the effort, sometimes it's not enough."

The Hornets are 1-3 on their five-game trip entering Saturday's finale, while the Timberwolves are 0-2 on their season-long six-game homestand.

Cunningham scores 18 as Timberwolves beat Hornets

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) The Minnesota Timberwolves were in unfamiliar territory.

They were in control at halftime with a big lead.

"I was really nervous," said coach Rick Adelman, drawing some laughter after the Timberwolves routed the New Orleans Hornets 115-86 on Saturday.

The veteran coach wasn't smiling, though. A night earlier, he watched his team nearly rally from 29 points down at halftime before losing to the L.A. Lakers at home.

"I've seen it happen too many times. The Lakers were up 29 on us, it just takes a spurt," Adelman said.

This time though, the Wolves - who've lost eight times this season when leading or being tied after three quarters - finished off the victory.

Dante Cunningham scored a season-high 18 points, Nikola Pekovic added 14 and the Timberwolves stopped their six-game losing streak.

Cunningham hit all nine of his shots to set a franchise record for most consecutive field goals without a miss.

"To have a blowout win is something that our team needed at this point," Luke Ridnour said. "Hopefully we can build on it."

Anthony Davis scored 18 points for the Hornets, who played without Eric Gordon and finished their five-game road trip with four straight losses. Team doctors still haven't cleared Gordon to play in back-to-back games while recovering from knee surgery.

Gordon played 25 minutes at Denver on Friday, and the Hornets badly missed their star shooting guard's energy. A night after committing 22 turnovers, New Orleans turned it over 23 times against the Wolves, who earned their largest victory margin this season.

"It's not the end of the world," Greivis Vasquez said. "But we've got to regroup, better ourselves and get back home and get a win and try to get out of this slump."

One of the worst-shooting teams in the NBA, the Timeberwolves shot 58 percent (45 for 77) using a simple plan: Get to the paint. Minnesota went hard to the basket - 15 of its scoring possessions in the first quarter were either drives or free throws. The Timberwolves led 33-14 after one, and their lead was never seriously threatened.

Ricky Rubio, who took the blame for Minnesota's lackluster start in the 111-100 loss to the Lakers, set an aggressive tone early by driving to the basket and finding open teammates.

"It's easier to do it when you're up by 20 you know," Rubio said. "But I felt pretty good today and like I said, I started finding my rhythm and my shot and being aggressive."

The biggest highlight came late in the third quarter, when Rubio lobbed an alley-oop to Cunningham for a two-handed jam that stretched the Wolves' lead to 74-46 and brought the crowd to its feet.

"It's great for the crowd sometimes, some of the plays he makes," Adelman said. "But he just has to make good plays, not great plays all the time. I think that's one thing we have to learn to do."

Rubio had nine points and seven assists, and Minnesota outscored the Hornets 58-32 in the paint.

"Anytime you come out and allow a team to play the game that easily, you look right at the coach, and for whatever reason, I wasn't sharp tonight," Hornets coach Monty Williams said. "I didn't have the guys ready to play and we got embarrassed tonight. That's something that is unacceptable."

NOTES: New Orleans is 8-7 when Gordon plays and 7-26 in games he's missed. "It's tough when you have a guy who can put up 20 points and you've got to sit him," Williams said before the game. Much like Williams has done with Gordon this season, Adelman has had to limit Rubio since returning from knee surgery. "I understand the deal with Rubio," Williams said. "He's such a great young player that you don't want to damage him for the future." Adelman, though, joked that he didn't believe early reports that Gordon wouldn't play. "I'm just very pessimistic at this point," he said. "He'll probably play 40 minutes." ... The Hornets are 9-4 in their past 13 against Minnesota. ... The Hornets matched their season low of 14 first-quarter points, which previously came against the Wolves on Jan. 11.

THE FACTS: Dante Cunningham didn't miss a shot Saturday night, setting a Minnesota Timberwolves record by going 9-for-9 from the field, and his 18 points helped lead the Timberwolves to their most lopsided victory of the season -- 115-86 over the slumping New Orleans Hornets.

Minnesota (18-26) opened a 19-point lead in the first quarter alone, eventually widened it to 34 and never allowed the Hornets (15-33) to get closer than 23 points after that, snapping a six-game losing streak with a convincing 29-point victory. New Orleans, which lost its fourth straight game to close out a five-game road trip, was led by Anthony Davis with 18 points.

One night after committing 22 turnovers in an ugly loss in Denver, the Hornets, playing without still-recuperating guard Eric Gordon, committed 23 more. They also dropped to 1-19 on the season when allowing 100 or more points.

THE STAT: 7-26 -- New Orleans' record when Gordon doesn't play; the Hornets are 8-7 when Gordon, who has missed most of the season with a knee injury, is in uniform.

TURNING POINT: The Wolves all but wrapped up this victory the day the NBA schedules were announced. New Orleans' visit to Minneapolis was the final game of a five-games-in-seven-days road trip that took them to the West Coast, and was their fourth game in five nights. The Wolves, though on a six-game losing streak, have been home since last Saturday. The difference in road-weariness was evident from the opening tip.

QUOTABLE II: "I didn't have the guys ready to ball. That falls square on my shoulders, and right in my face. ... We got embarrassed, and that is unacceptable."

HOT: Cunningham had been in a shooting slump for a month -- he had made only 39.4 percent of his shots in 2013 -- but he almost made up for it in one night. The fourth-year forward went 9forf-9 from the field, setting a franchise record for most shots made without a miss and making him the Wolves' high scorer for the first time this season. Cunningham had 18 points off the bench, to go with four rebounds and two steals.

NOT: New Orleans' defense was virtually non-existent against the Wolves. Minnesota made 58.4 percent of its field-goal tries, topping its previous best this season by four percentage points, and the worst performance by a Hornets defense this year. It's also the third straight game that the Hornets' opponent made at least half of its shots.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Hornets center Robin Lopez isn't as accomplished as his All-Star-bound brother, Brook Lopez, but he's on a roll lately. Lopez was 7-for-10 against Minnesota, and has made 65.8 percent of his shots (25-for-38) over the past four games, albeit all losses. Not coincidentally, he's also reached double figures in all four games, matching his longest such stretch of the season.

INSIDE THE ARENA: Former NBA guard Bobby Hansen, who won an NBA championship in 1992 with the Bulls, was in attendance. Hansen is an analyst on radio broadcasts of Iowa basketball.

GOOD MOVE: Rubio kept the Target Center crowd interested during a lopsided game with a handful of dazzling plays, including three alley-oop lobs. The most dramatic came late in the third quarter when, after an Andrei Kirilenko 3-pointer gave Minnesota a 26-point lead, Rubio stepped in front of Greivis Vasquez to steal the inbounds pass. He then arced a high pass that Cunningham grabbed far above the rim and slammed home.

BAD MOVE: New Orleans forward Ryan Anderson had made 16 3-pointers in the Hornets' previous four games, so when the Hornets fell behind quickly, he started launching shots. It didn't work; Anderson, whose 144 3-pointers made this season are the most in the league, was only 1-for-5 on Saturday, breaking his streak of four straight games with at least three.

ROOKIE WATCH: Wolves guard Alexey Shved has come back strong after sitting out five games with a sprained ankle; his 12 points on Saturday give him a 14.0-point average in the three games since his return. He also added a team-high eight assists against the Hornets.

NOTABLE: For the second time this week, the Hornets' Gordon sat out the second night of a back-to-back. But Gordon's right knee, which kept him out of 29 games this season due to soreness in his patella, wasn't the entire reason for this night off. Gordon said he played Friday night in Denver with a sore back, a new injury that has affected his shooting accuracy. ... With the Timberwolves holding a 30-point lead in the fourth quarter, their largest of the season, reserve Lou Amundson played the final eight minutes and matched his season-high with eight points. That's one-third of his season total of 24 points coming in. ... All 24 players who appeared in the game scored. ... Minnesota outscored New Orleans 58-32 in the paint, and Wolves reserves outscored the Hornets' bench, 68-40.
