Heat-Pacers Preview

Not even LeBron James and the prolific Miami Heat offense could overcome the stifling defense of the Indiana Pacers when the teams faced each other in early January.

Indiana seeks a third straight regular-season victory over visiting Miami when the Eastern Conference's top defense meets its highest-scoring offense Friday night.

The only time the Heat were held below 84 points all season came in an 87-77 loss the Pacers on Jan. 8 as James tied a season high with seven turnovers - half of his team's total for the contest. He did have 22 points while Dwyane Wade scored 30 and Chris Bosh added 14, but their teammates combined to shoot 4 for 22 from the field.

Miami (29-13) tops the league in field-goal shooting at 48.9 percent, ranks fourth in turnovers with 13.8 per game and averages an East-leading 102.7 points, though it has struggled against the defense-first philosophy of Indiana in recent matchups.

The Pacers, who lead the NBA in field-goal percentage defense (41.9) and the East in scoring defense (89.9), led last season's second-round playoff series with the Heat 2-1 before dropping three straight. They've held Miami under 78 points each of the last three times they've beaten the Heat, including that series.

Paul George had 29 points and 11 rebounds in the last meeting and played a key role in frustrating James for most of the contest.

"It's a chance for me to see where I'm at, going against one of the best, if not, the best in the league," George said after that game. "Another challenge to myself to go at LeBron."

Since George's 2010-11 rookie season, the Pacers are 4-1 against the Heat when holding James to 25 points or fewer and 1-8 when they don't. George, scoring a career-best 17.4 points per game, averaged only 10.0 and shot 36.5 percent in the playoff series versus the Heat.

"He was a good player last year, but we weren't able to see it because he wasn't a featured player," James said in January.

Indiana has won the last two regular-season matchups after dropping nine of 10, but it will have to contend with a Miami team which has won five of six following a 105-85 victory at Brooklyn on Wednesday.

"When we're playing at a high level, that's what we're capable of doing," said James, who had 24 points, nine rebounds and seven assists. "We showed what we're capable of, both defensively and offensively."

Dwyane Wade scored 21 points and shot 9 for 16 after going 6 for 20 with six turnovers in a 100-98 double-overtime loss at Boston on Sunday.

"We just knew we could play better," said Wade, averaging 32.3 points in his last four versus the Pacers, including playoffs. "We want to get better on the road, so I thought we took a step forward."

The Pacers (27-19) lost the final three of their four-game road trip before returning home to beat Detroit 98-79 on Wednesday despite George hitting only 3 of his 11 shots and committing a season worst-tying six turnovers.

"I'm proud of our guys coming back off a trip and taking care of business," coach Frank Vogel said. "We had an edge, which is important when you have a losing streak."

Vogel also lauded the all-around effort of Lance Stephenson, who had 12 points and a season-high 11 rebounds after scoring a season-best 20 points in Monday's loss at Denver.

"He's a big reason for our success this year on both ends of the basketball," Vogel said of Stephenson, who likely will be guarding Wade. "He's an in-your-face defender. When he's at his best, we're awful tough to beat."

West's big night leads Pacers past Heat 102-89

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) The Indiana Pacers proved one thing Friday night: Beating Miami last month was no fluke.

David West scored 30 points, Paul George added 15, and the Pacers never trailed after the first quarter as they pulled away from the defending NBA champs 102-89 in a game that was even more lopsided than the score.

"We want to be dominant at home, and we're getting there," Pacers coach Frank Vogel said. "David West was spectacular. He has a way of giving us contagious confidence. He has that look that carries over to everyone else where we're not going to lose tonight."

The rest of the Pacers (28-19) had that look, too.

They joined the New York Knicks as the only teams to beat Miami twice this season and have won three straight regular-season games over the Heat. Miami won the last three games in last spring's Eastern Conference semifinals on their way to winning the NBA crown.

And Indiana beat a team that promised to be more focused, more motivated and more physical than the first time around. None of it mattered.

Since ending a three-game losing streak Wednesday night, Indiana has won two straight by double digits and its 13-game home winning streak is the team's longest since it won 14 in a row in 2002-03.

Not enough?

The Pacers still haven't played with former All-Star Danny Granger this season, though Vogel hopes to have him back on the court before the All-Star break and certainly before the next showdown between Indiana and Miami in March.

Perhaps most impressive is that Indiana has now beaten Miami in two different ways.

In January, they used a suffocating defense and a precision offense to limit Miami to a season-low point total in the 87-77 victory.

On Friday, they held Miami under 90 points again, something that hadn't happened since Jan. 8, but the Pacers won this one with an efficient offense.

Indiana shot a season-high 55.7 percent from the field, a number that included 11 straight baskets from West after he missed his first shot of the game. Five players reached double figures and the Pacers came within three points of matching their highest non-overtime point total of the season (105).

"We have to get better and play better at both ends of the court," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. "Hopefully, we will. They just outplayed us on both ends of the court."

For Miami (29-14), it was a frustrating night.

James finished with his customary 28 points and had six rebounds and three assists. Wade added 17 points, six rebounds and five assists. Bosh had 13 points and only two rebounds, partly because of foul trouble. But the rest of the team combined for 31 points, 11 from Shane Battier, and 15 rebounds.

They still got outrebounded, and the loss prevented Miami from clinching the best record in the East before the All-Star break, which would have given Spoelstra a ticket to Houston to coach the Eastern Conference All-Stars.

How tough was it? Three players -- Bosh, Battier and Udonis Haslem -- and Spoelstra all drew technical fouls.

It was enough to make Miami scratch their heads.

"I think they (Pacers) are playing some really good basketball right now. They're kind of like us, they play great basketball at home, they kind struggle on the road. It's like two different teams sometimes," James said. "But they have improved and I think the biggest improvement is Paul George. He's improving, that's why he's an All-Star."

It looked easy.

Indiana took control of the game with a 13-0 run that turned a 23-20 deficit into a 33-23 lead early in the second quarter, and the Heat never tied the score or took the lead again.

The Pacers, meanwhile, methodically extended the margin. They closed the first half on an 8-4 mini-run to make it 53-45, then opened the second half by scoring the first six points to take a 59-45 lead.

When Miami closed to 64-54 on two free throws by Mario Chalmers with 7:13 to go in the third quarter, Indiana came right back with a 12-3 run that ended with two free throws from West. That gave Indiana a 76-57 lead with 3:16 left in the quarter, and Miami never got closer than 12 again.

"It's good to beat them, but we can't overreact to this," West said after missing only three of his 15 shots. "We match up with them. I think we've got some familiarity with them because of the playoff series. But they're a tough team. They're going to adjust the next time we see them."

Notes: The Heat are 0-2 against the Knicks and Pacers, 0-1 against the Bulls and 3-0 against Brooklyn -- the teams currently seeded two through five in the Eastern Conference. ... THE FACTS: David West won't be going to the All-Star Game, a fact that does not sit well with the Indiana Pacers. Heat coach Erik Spoelstra may not be, either, thanks in no small part to Indiana's veteran power forward. West put on his own personal showcase Friday, racking up 30 points on 12-for-15 shooting to lead the Pacers to their second straight victory over Miami, 102-89, Friday night at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. West scored 22 of his points in the second and third quarters, when the Pacers seized control of the game, building a 15-point lead heading into the fourth quarter and keeping Miami at arm's length down the stretch. While Indiana (28-19) won its 13th in a row at home, Miami (29-14) saw its Eastern Conference lead over the Knicks slip to one-half game, jeopardizing Spoelstra's opportunity to serve as the East's coach. If Miami loses to Toronto and the Knicks beat Sacramento Sunday, New York's Mike Woodson would make the trip to Houston. LeBron James scored 28 with six rebounds and three assists to lead the Heat.

QUOTABLE: "They're one of the best teams in the NBA, so it's good to beat them, but we can't overreact to this. We match up with them and I think we have some familiarity with them from the playoff series. It's just one game and they're a tough time and they're going to adjust the next time we see them."

THE STAT: Until his last two games against the Pacers, Miami's Ray Allen had not been held scoreless since 1997 -- which had been the only such occasion of his career. But he has failed to score in both games in Indiana, missing all nine of his shots.

TURNING POINT: The Pacers' second unit provided a much-needed cushion with a 13-0 run bridging the first and second periods, with Tyler Hansbrough scoring seven of the points as Indiana took a 33-23 lead. West then put it out of reach in the third quarter, scoring 16 points, the last of which came on a fast-break dunk that pushed Indiana's lead to 78-59.

HOT: West wasn't Indiana's only hot hand. Lance Stephenson continued his recent surge with 15 points on 6-for-11 shooting. Paul George had 15 points, six rebounds, six assists and two steals, and Hansbrough scored 11 off the bench. Miami reserve Chris Andersen made all four of his shots.

NOT: Dwyane Wade was once again a relative non-factor, scoring a quiet 17 points on 7-for-16 shooting. Roy Hibbert was scoreless without a rebound in the first half but finished with seven points and six boards.

QUOTABLE III: "They're a good basketball team, especially at home. They are not as good on the road. They're kind of like us in that regard, a great team at home, struggling a little on the road. Have they improved? Yes, they've improved. The biggest improvement is with Paul George. That's why he's an All-Star."
